TELLTALES BY JOHN SCHAFFNER

Last week, I attended the ceremony where eight new fire fighters were sworn in at the Port Clinton Fire Department. It was also an occasion to recognize Tom Krupp for his 41 years of dedicated service to the PCVFD and the citizens of Port Clinton. Tom, who is on the road to recovery from a triple bypass operations a few weeks back, was highly visible as he and Fire Chief Kent Johnson rode around in the City’s 1922 Stutz 350 triple combination baby K pumper, the first engine powered fire truck the city ever had. In the photo here, that’s Tom sitting on the front bumper of the Stutz awaiting Chief Johnson to stop saying nice things about him. There were only 23 baby K pumpers built and there are only two left still running. –––––––– We had just 76 entries in our Find Wylie contest this week. Our winner is Gary Luman of Oak Harbor who found Wylie hiding in the Catawba Interiors ad on page 5B last week. Gary wins a $20 gift certificate to The Island House Inn. Our “Win it on the Web” Contest winner is Phyllis Howell of Port Clinton chosen from 64 entries. Emmy wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. We’ll hide Wylie again this week and when you find him, fill out the Find Wylie Ad and drop it at our office (Beacon Place Shopping Center, next to Goodwill) or … click on Wylie on our website homepage, www.thebeacon.net or … click on the “Win it on the Web” icon. You could be our next winner. –––––––– I confirmed today that The Beacon is now an “Official” News Partner of WTOL, Channel 11 in Toledo. They want three news stories a week, so, if you see news happen, get it to us pronto. –––––––– I ran into Lock Zeis on Monday, and he reminded me that this July will be the 40th Anniversary of the great 4th of July storm of 1969. Lock was Mayor of Port Clinton then and I was a rookie announcer at WRWR. Lock told me that he has gobs of records from that event and wants to share them with us. He doesn’t think he has any photos, so, I will ask you, our loyal audience. If anyone out there has pictures from that event, please drop them off, or e-mail them, or send them to us. Thanks! –––––––– It was a spectacular weekend weather-wise over the Memorial Day Weekend. It was very nice to see Bob Underwood (pictured on the right) preside as the Grand Marshall of the Walleye Festival Parade. They could not have chosen a better ambassador for Port Clinton. –––––––– The annual Ottawa County Republican Fish Fry will be held on Friday, June 12 at the Port Clinton Elks Lodge. Gathering time is 5 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6. Tickets are $25 per person. For reservations, send your check to the OCRP, C/O Karen McTague, Treasurer, 11537 Bloom Rd., Oak Harbor, OH 43449. For more information you can call Karen at 419-460-2429. –––––––– The Kenny House at 226 Adams Street in Port Clinton has a new massage therapist. She is Cindy Rayford, a 1999 graduate of EHOVE, who also attended Wright State University in Dayton. –––––––– Attention All Golfers!!! There are three big tournaments coming up. First is the annual Chick Schaffner Memorial Charity event sponsored by Brush Wellman and Magruder Hospital on Monday, June 22 at Catawba Island Club. Call me or e-mail me if you are interested in playing…just $125 per person ($500 per team). Brush Wellman is also sponsoring the Habitat for Humanity Tournament at Oak Harbor Golf Club on Saturday, June 20. The $240/team fee gets you 18-holes and a steak dinner afterward. Call 419-734-7074 to enter or log onto www.golf4habitat.homestead.com. Finally, the Dick Bassett Memorial Golf Outing is set for Sunday, June 14 at Oak Harbor Golf course. The fee for this one is $300 per team with proceeds going to the St. Boniface Renovation and Beautification Committee. Call Barry Hall at 419-898-0289 or Anne Mulligan at 419-517-6739 to get in.

Tradition of Honor BY CHRIS MCBAIN-BERRY ASSISTANT EDITOR For MSgt. John Madison of Oak Harbor, service to his country is a family tradition. “My father was in the Army Air Corp during WWII,” he said and that may have had something to do with him wanting to serve his country. John is a service member of the 180th Fighter Wing (FW), Ohio Air National Guard Base, which is located at the Toledo Express Airport. The 180th FW has two

The Airman of the 180th Fighter Wing decorate the walls around their compound as WWII Pilots decorated their planes. missions: to provide combat ready F16s capable of deploying world-wide in minimum response time and to support the Homeland Defense Air Sovereignty Alert (ASA) mission His most recent deployment was to the Joint Base Balad, Iraq in mid-October of 2008 for 90 days and returning in February of 2009. Two years ago, he was also deployed with the 180th at the same location for 45 days. “It seems like we got there, unpacked, got situated and were ready to come back. That deployment went so fast!” While there, the living conditions consisted of a room with bunk beds in pods but still with the comforts of home as far as technology… the internet, TV and computers which were available on base. “But the days were pretty much the same…work, eat, shower and sleep," he stated. The first time he was deployed to Joint Base Balad was different from his most recent deployment. “At that time, bombs were being dropped from the F16s. The second time, the missions focused on surveillance in support of the ground troops-relaying information to them of any possible attacks (i.e: road-side bombs or ground attacks). John stated that life within Joint Base Balad had changed in those two years, too. "Two years ago, we had alerts once a week which meant we had to take shelter

multiple times a week from snipers. This past deployment, we only had one alert in 90 days. Life has really improved!” John, who came from a family of four boys and two girls, has been in the service for 23 years working in the Supply career field. Fifteen of those years were with the 200th Red Horse Squadron Civil Engineering Unit of the Ohio Air National Guard in Port Clinton. John then transferred to the 180th FW, joining the Civil Engineering Squadron for five years and is currently a member of the Logistics Readiness Squadron whose responsibility includes the mobility/readiness section which involved making sure each member has the proper gear for deployment (i.e.: back packs, helmets, canteens and ammo pouches and gas masks.). John originally began his career through a WSOS summer work program in high school and was assigned to the Red Horse Squadron for this program. John stated, “Besides my father being a service member, I believe it was the family atmosphere of the Air National Guard – specifically the Red Horse- which made me join originally.” “The Air National Guard feels like family,” he said of his co-workers. On behalf of Port Clinton Area Business and Professional Women, we would like to thank our donors and attendees for the success of our 14th annual Scholarship Auction/ Brunch. Your donations helped us to raise $6,600.00 for high school girls from Port Clinton, Danbury and Oak Harbor and adult women who live here in your community. They will receive a scholarship or grant because of your generosity. A special thanks to Bob Kaspar for his auctioneer services, Bill Beck for his generous donation of the 50/50 winnings and Dupps Printing for donating the tickets. The success of our event would have been impossible without you. The Port Clinton Area BPW Auction Committee Scholarship Committee Dear Editor, My name is Kelly Snyder. I have been a United Way volunteer for just over two years. I volunteer my time at the Ottawa County office in Port Clinton, two mornings a week. I take the majority of the phone calls and refer callers to the appropriate entity. I also perform standard clerical duties such as copying, faxing and data entry as needed. Since an internship in 2003 at The Walt Disney World Re-

sort in Orlando, Florida, I have returned annually to provide Guest Orientation for families visiting the park. I am also an advocate for Ronald McDonald House, and I have been a member of Immaculate Conception Church choir for about three years. It is extremely rewarding to know that I am helping others who may need a little extra, whether it is food, utility assistance or just a listening ear. This is my community contribution, and I hope to continue this in the future. Even though this is a small piece of the local good United Way does, I am honored to be a part of such a wonderful organization. My name is Kelly Snyder, and I LIVE UNITED by advocating and volunteering. If you would like to know how you can get involved in Ottawa County, contact the United Way Volunteer Center at 419-244-3063 or toll free at 1-800-650-HELP.

City May Purchase True Property Continued from front page Hartlaub also had praise for the Trust for Public Lands. “They are conservationists who believe in development,” she stated Monday. “We believe that having this plan in our pockets will enhance the chances of securing a developer for Waterworks Park no matter what that development might turn out to be.” Planners will face a difficult task of bringing back the marsh area to natural grasses and vegetation. They must find a way to kill off the invasive fragmite that has taken hold there. Plans

also include beach re-nourishment to extend Port Clinton’s city beach westward from in front of Lakeview Park. Mayor Debbie Hymore-Tester pointed out that the recent drainage improvements made along Perry Street are linked with both this project and the resurfacing of Perry Street which should get underway in the fall. “We feel this area will be a showcase for people coming into Port Clinton.” Both Hartlaub and Hymore-Tester agree that this will be a major improvement to Port Clinton for its residents as well as for visitors. HymoreTester also stated, “I am so pleased

that ALL of the Perry Street residents went along with the project.” There were nearly as many leaseholder issues to be resolved as there were Perry Street residents. The ordinance introduced on Tuesday is merely the first step and may take some time to complete. After three years of negotiations, the agreement struck may now allow the project to be put on a fast track. As a wise man once said … “The journey of a thousand miles always begins with the first step.”

Tradition of Honor Continued from front page They are good people, and people make my work what it is. It’s the best part of what I do.” He said he didn’t feel much fear being in Iraq during either tours because his co-workers were there, too. “We all worked together, and it was our job. It was also an all-volunteer deployment.” While in Balad, Iraq, John – being a Knights of Columbus (K of C) member and presently a Grand Knight of the Oak Harbor Council #1944 and President of the Lake Erie Chapter of the K of C- organized the first Round Table meeting of

the Knights of Columbus and he is proud to say that the membership is growing in number there. Recently, John made a presentation to the Oak Harbor Village Council with a flag and which was flown over Iraq. John stated, “the flag represented couple of things, first – a Thank you to the community of Oak Harbor for there support during my deployments for all of the cards and care packages which I received especially during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season and secondly, a Thank You to ALL of the service members of Oak Harbor whom have served – Past and Present.”

The Beacon I

Thursday, May 28, 2009

BeaconBits Fran Allen sent me a note in response to a column in this paper in which I’d quoted some funny lines from church newsletters and worBY VIRGINIA PARK ship bulletins. She had seen some outdoor church signs on a recent drive from Columbus with these messages: Prayer is the original wireless Prayer – conditioners serviced here Wal-Mart isn’t the only savings place Fran also sent me a copy of a sign she saw at the corner of a small rural cemetery. It says, “Please…Don’t dig holes in the grass.” Under that it says, “Lot owners meeting” with a day and time. Gosh. It makes a person wonder how they bury anybody if holes can’t be dug through the grass! And it also conjures up visions of ghostly spirits sitting around a table conducting a business meeting. Fran wrote that her 35th great-grandbaby arrived in Ingleside, Texas on April 16. The baby is also the first grandchild of Mary and Noel Patrick, also of Port Clinton. --------There will be a good opportunity to get rid of your old computers and television sets this Saturday, May 30. Take them to the Ottawa County Fairgrounds, State Route 163, Oak Harbor any time between 9 a.m. and Noon. This is not open to businesses; only residential products will be accepted. You may take CPU’s, monitors, keyboards, scanners, and terminals – but no software or packaging materials. There is a charge to recycle television sets – from $2 to $10 depending on size – and very large console sets and projection screen TVs will cost $15. Other recycling dates coming up are August 29 for appliances and September 12 for household hazardous wastes. --------A “Celebration of Life” event for the American Cancer Society will be held on June 27 from 4-9 p.m. at Lakeview Park, Port Clinton. This is similar to the “Relay for Life” which has been held in years past. This year it will be only five hours long. If you want to help raise money for cancer research, you can join any team. Call the American Cancer Society, find some people who will pay you to walk and

polish up your walking shoes for the event. --------Have you ever heard of the “America in Bloom” program? There’s an article about it in the May/June “Our Ohio” magazine, written by Amy Beth Graves. She says this is a national program with “friendly competition” in eight categories using plants and flowers to beautify communities. Logan, Ohio is one of the communities featured in the article but many villages and towns participate. “America in Bloom” was founded in 2001. To organize, a community must form a committee and get the political subdivision involved. Registration with the parent organization involves paying a fee, the amount of which is commensurate with the community’s size. Prepare a beautification plan utilizing plants and then implement it. Judges will come to assess the results. The city of Logan and other Ohio communities won several awards in the competitions. Plantings may be in parks, along streets and near waterways. A nice pay-off is that residents get interested in the contest and tend to tidy up and beautify their personal property, too. --------A recent edition of “Twineline”, the magazine of the Ohio Seagrant program, has an article about Zebra Mussels. This invasive species, a small hard-shelled, striped mussel, had invaded the lake twenty years ago and was first seen in Lake Erie when a dock at Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory on Gibralter Island was taken out of the water for winter storage. This was in October of 1988. It turned out that Lake Erie was a great place for the Zebra Mussel population, and there was a huge explosion of numbers of them in a very short time. National funding helped to find solutions to the ever-growing problem. Better yet, there is now continuing funding to cover the problems of aquatic invasive species throughout the country. More than 180 different invasive species are now found in the Great Lakes making it very important that these species be monitored so that they do not negatively impact these huge inland water systems. And here is a bit of trivia: the article said that the Great Lakes hold six quadrillion gallons of water. --------The first Verandah Concert at Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont is on June 10. Members of the Fremont Community Theatre will perform musical excerpts from its spring offering “Cinderella”. The evening begins at 6:45 p.m. with an ice cream social; the music starts at seven o’clock and lasts an hour. Be sure to take blanks or lawn chairs for seating on the spacious lawn in front of the home of R. B. Hayes, our nation’s 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. 19th President. --------Computer equipment will be accepted at NO CHARGE, Also at the Hayes Presiincluding CPU’s and monitors, keyboards, mice dential Center is a fine library and Museum. have a good look and a leisurely walk around the extensive grounds. President Hayes loved gardening, kept notes on what was planted, and made other comments about the lawns, trees, and gardens in a book he called “Our Home”. He acquired willow trees from George Washington’s estate and seedlings from the famous “Charter Oak” in Connecticut. White House gardeners also sent him cuttings for Spiegel Grove, the Fremont estate of Hayes and his family. If you’re going to visit the museum and if you’re a grandparent, go on Mondays June 1 – August 25. Take your grandchildren and you’ll get 50% off the regular adult price of admission. And don’t forget, access to the grounds is free. --------Martha Dykes wanted me to let everyone know there will be an Open House at Back To The Wild, Wildlife Rehabilitation and Nature Education Center at Castalia on Sunday, May 31, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stop in and tour the center to see how the folks there are helping Ohio’s native wildlife. This is a good opportunity to see some “behind the scenes” activities at a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. View more than 50 native hawks, owls, peregrines, bald eagles, great blue herons, egrets, bitterns, songbirds, bobcats, foxes, flying squirrels, reptiles, amphibians and more. There is no admission for the Open House on Sunday, although donations are greatly appreciated to help care for injured wildlife at the center. Back To The Wild is located at 4504 Bardshar Road, Castalia. From the Route 2 bypass, take Route 101 southwest approximately one mile and turn left onto Bardshar Road. Travel approximately two miles and the center will be located on your left. If you need help with directions, call 419-684-9539. --------An article entitled “What’s So Funny?” in the May-June issue of the Ohio State Alumni Magazine reminds us laughter is the best medicine. Jep Hostetler, a former director of medical humanities at Ohio State, said laughter promotes the secretion of endorphins, the natural “feel-good opioids” in our system. He is quoted in the article as saying “serious science is being carried out to relate one’s sense of well-being to how much one has a positive attitude.” Hostetler, who is now retired from the university, has traveled the world to encourage people to live joyous lives. He has even written a self-help book, The Joy Factor. I researched his book on the internet and found this description: well-known speaker, magician, and author, Jep Hostetler offers his unique approach on the importance of humor in health and faith. His compelling challenge to reassess our humor index helps us to accept what is, celebrate what we can, and find joy once again. What makes you laugh? Improving your health is a good reason to think about that. Until next week…. --------Leah Tusen sent word that the public is cordially invited to a two-day Bonsai Show on May 30 and 31. This will take place at the Sandusky Cultural Center immediately behind the Sandusky High School 12-4 both days. There will be more than 100 Bonsai plants on display. Bonsai is the art of keeping plants in containers and pruned into lovely small shapes. There is no admission charge for the show. Free refreshments and demonstrations on pruning and planting will be featured. I hope that all of you who enjoy gardening will be able to attend.

Esther Petersen, Volunteer at Magruder Hospital, participated in the hospital’s Nurse’s Week Celebration by bringing in some of her nursing memorabilia from the 1940s. Esther started nursing school at Flower Hospital Nursing School in 1942 and graduated in 1945. In March 1945 she volunteered to go to Nichols General Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky to work with injured World War II veterans through the Cadet Nurse Corps. She was there until August 1945 when she returned to Port Clinton and started working at Magruder Hospital where she worked until 1950. She said she was working at the hospital the day her mother called her from home to tell her that she had passed her Registered Nursing Boards.

PCHS Girls Chosen for Buckeye Girls State American Legion Post 113 Auxiliary has announced the selection of three outstanding high school junior girls to attend Buckeye Girls State this year. From Danbury High School, Marisa Moody of Marblehead will attend, and from Port Clinton High School, Kelsey Lindsley and Erika Bailey of Port Clinton will attend. These girls were selected because of their high academic achievements and their leadership in their schools and communities.

The Ohio American Legion Auxiliary has been a proud sponsor of Buckeye Girls State for sixty-one years. This year’s area girls are co-sponsored by the Port Clinton Area Business and Professional Women and the Republican Party Women. Each of the cosponsors funded one girl to attend Girls State. Buckeye Girls State will be held at Ashland College from June 14 to the 20th. This program is designed to educate Ohio’s young women in the

AroundOttawaCounty Murals Dedicated at Wolcott Keeper’s House Windy weather drove the ceremony inside, but the May 9 dedication of the colorful “Kid’s Cabin Murals’ at the Wolcott Keeper’s House proceeded as planned. Visitors to the site at 9999 E. Bayshore Road near Marblehead took pictures of the new murals and inserted their faces into photo silhouettes of first lighthouse keepers Benajah and Rachel Wolcott. The project was designed by Jodie McCallum of Jodie & Company Gallery in Marblehead, and underwritten by the Port Clinton Rotary Foundation. The design was transferred by Dennis Kennedy, then the colors mixed and applied by Danbury Public School art students under the direction of art teachers Sande Measimer and Lea Mark with assistance from Grant McCallum. Jerry Davenport did the lettering and applied the Rotary logo. Rotarian John Madison noted that the Rotary was involved with the Keeper’s House since its purchase in 1989 when the Jodie and Grant McCallum by the mural she designed for the Wolcott late Earl Wiseman, also a member of RoKeeper’s House. PHOTOS BY SHARON CODER tary, was president of the Ottawa County

Historical Society. Rotarian Ro Chapman, along with Karin Messmer, brought the Wolcotts’ stories to life with their reenactments as Benajah and Rachel. The late Bob Armbruster and Harry Holzapfel were key participants in the docent program that keeps the history alive for visitors to the House. Nearly two dozen Rotarians have been active with the Keeper’s House over the years. The Daisy Day festivities at the House included music by John Wilkie, children’s entertainer and Lakeside summer resident, and free balloons were available for young visitors. The summer season for the Keeper’s House starts on Monday, June 1, and it will be open for tours from 1-5 p. m. Monday through Friday until August 28. Visitors are welcomed to visit the outdoor murals anytime. The Keeper’s House is a project of the Ottawa County Historical Society, and is supported by donations, fund raising and grants.

eryone enjoyed side dishes of baked beans, corn-on-the-cob, potato salad, a vegetable tray with dip, and a watermelon/ cantaloupe mixture. Fred Barringer started the morning off by singing and playing his guitar before lunch. He entertained the crowd with folk music and jokes. Laughter and smiles filled the room as all who attended enjoyed their time together. Throughout the rest of the week various other joint activities were planned. On Tuesday everyone at Edgewood enjoyed hot cheesy pizza while listening to jazzy tunes played by the Singin’ Swingin’ Saxophones. The next day a 50s sock hop, complete with live music and root beer floats, had the facility jumpin’ with fun! Memories rushed back as the halls of Edgewood echoed with lively 50s and 60s music sung by the Two Bow Ties with Two D’s. Nor’easter Cove Joins the United Way Program of “Caring, Giving Communities” About five years ago Catawba Bay originated and became the first community to become a United Way “Caring – Giving – Community”. Since the original implementation of the program, Catawba Bay has raised and contributed to United Way of Ottawa County in excess of $48,600. The program is a combination of a lump sum donated by Catawba Bay for each parcel sold, either lot, home, or both, as well as an annual sum pledged by the lot or home owner and collected by the subdivision association. The purpose of the program is to recognize responsibilities as business and as individuals to the community we live in and to help provide for those who need support and assistance. A new development on Catawba Island, Nor’easter Cove, has joined the Caring – Giving – Community Program, and as Catawba Bay has done, will donate a set sum to

be donated to the United Way of Ottawa County, and will also put in place the deed requirements for each purchaser and owner of Nor’easter Cove to make annual contributions to the United Way. The hope, both Catawba Bay and Nor’easter Cove, is that all developments on Catawba Island, both new and existing, will follow a similar path. It is a way to say “thank you” for good fortune and to United Way for all of the good work they do for the community. Catawba Bay and Nor’easter Cove are independent developments. Catawba Bay is owned by Bob Snyder, Bill Van Der Giessen, and Pete Weimer. Nor’easter Cove is owned by Bill Van Der Giessen. For information on the “Caring – Giving – Community” Program contact any of the parties mentioned or Chris Galvin at United Way.

Firelands Receives ACR Accreditation in CT Firelands Regional Medical Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in Computed Tomography (CT) services as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR). “This was a lengthy process and we are proud of the entire team that worked very hard to achieve this accreditation,” said Mike Vickery, Director, Radiology & Laboratory Services at Firelands Regional Medical Center. “This recognition further validates Firelands continued commitment to provide the highest quality of care to our patients.” Often called a CAT scan, computer tomography (CT) uses special x-ray equipment to image different angles of the body. A computer then processes the information to show a cross-section of tissues and organs. CT imaging shows lung, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels with great clarity, allowing radiologists to more effectively diagnose cancers, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, trauma, stroke and musculoskeletal disorders. It is also commonly

used to guide a physician when performing biopsy procedures. The ACR, headquartered in Reston, VA., awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to the ACR’s Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report. The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic-interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists and nuclear medicine and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services.

Richmond Paints the Cuyahoga In “The Watch Room” you have an opportunity to see what Ben Richmond sees from inside his Marblehead studio, near the coast guard station. This “L6-S-A1” type (more commonly known as “Maritimer” class) steel bulk freighter was built in 1943 at an approximate cost of $1.97 million by the American Ship Building Co., Lorain, (hull 828) as the Mesabi for the United States Maritime Commission. She was the 10th of 16 such vessels built in a two-year period during World War II to carry much needed iron ore to the steel mills which were mass producing tanks, artillery, aircraft, and other supplies for the war effort. Of the 16 “Maritimer” class bulkers built, six were of the “A1” type built by the American Ship Building Co. in either Lorain or Toledo. The A1’s were the first boats on the Great Lakes to be built with a new cruiser stern design and the only lakers to be powered by a 2,500 i.h.p. four crank, double compound steam engine built by Lentz Standard Marine Engine with two coal-fired water-tube boilers made by Combustion Engineering Co. This power plant was a German-designed engine (ironic during World War II) which was basically two separate engines placed end-to-end sending power to a common shaft. The B1’s, by contrast, had different sterns, larger stacks and more traditional 2,500 i.h.p. triple expansion engines. The other five A1’s included the Thomas Wilson, Sewell Avery, Champlain, John T. Hutchinson, and the E.G. Grace (listed in order of entering service). The J. Burton Ayers was the fifth of the six A1’s to enter service. The vessel’s namesake, Joseph Burton Ayers, was born at Dayton, on Oct. 8, 1881. He began working for the Brown Fleet (Capt. W.W. Brown) in 1901. This fleet merged with other fleets in 1911 becoming the Great Lakes Steamship Co. On Aug. 1, 1995, the J. Burton Ayers was sold to Canadian Lower Lakes Towing Ltd. (Black Creek Shipping Co.) Port Dover, Ontario, who had her towed from Toledo to Sarnia, Ontario, for repainting and refit. The self-unloader was the first laker of the newly formed company. She was renamed Cuyahoga (her first renaming in 52 years) in November of 1995 and was formally registered Canadian on Nov. 7, 1995. The proud laker’s new name honors Ohio’s Cuyahoga River, an Indian word meaning “crooked river” a winding river where some of her new owner’s customers are located. The Cuyahoga is the second oldest Canadian registered lake boat still in active service on the Great Lakes; preceded only by her fleet mate Mississagi. The Mississagi, also a “Maritimer” class vessel but a “B1” type entered service only about a month ahead of the Cuyahoga. The Cuyahoga however, is the sole survivor of the “A1” class of Maritimers. Now available in a very limited edition print and canvas giclee “The Watch Room” is on display exclusively at the Richmond Gallery, 417 W. Main St., Marblehead. Richmond Gallery is open everyday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Call locally 419-798-5631 or 1-800-441-5631 and online at www.richmondgallery.com.

THE

CIRCULATION AUDIT

The first record of European rudd in Ohio waters was recorded last week. It was caught by licensed Ohio commercial fisherman Jim Swartz, who netted the fish near the Lakeside Pier in Marblehead and brought it to state fisheries biologists in Sandusky for identification, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. European rudd, Scardinius erythrophthalmus, is a medium-sized fish native to Europe and Western Asia, where it is a popular food and game species. It was introduced to the United States in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century and may be found in as many as 20 other states. Rudd were first recorded in the Great Lakes drainage in 1950, found in Canadian waters of Lake Erie in 1997, and more recently in Pennsylvania waters of Lake Erie in 2004. Rudd are benthic cyprinid fish (minnow family) with omnivorous feeding habits and a lifespan of up to 15 years. Adult size is about 18-20 inches. The fish is very similar to the golden shiner in appearance. They are abundant in the upper Niagara River and in Buffalo Harbor, New York. Rudd may compete for invertebrate food sources with native fishes. Because rudd are fairly hardy, they are likely to fare better than many native fishes in waters that are low in oxygen or polluted. Bait bucket release seems to be the primary mechanism by which rudd have spread. Lake Erie anglers are encouraged to drain all live wells and use only Ohio approved bait fish. Ohio law prohibits the introduction of any fish species into public waters without written permission from the ODNR Division of Wildlife.

Financial Focus Financial Focus Investment Ideas for Newlyweds June is a popular month for weddings. If you’re getting married this month, you have a lot to think about, but after the wedding — well, you’ll have even more to think about. And one of those topics should be your investment strategy. In these days of economic uncertainty, it’s imporGARY COON, EDWARD JONES tant that you and your spouse make INVESTMENTS investment decisions today that will help you reach your long-term goals. Of course, the investment process can seem confusing to just one person, so you might think it will be twice as difficult for the two of you. But that’s not necessarily so. You can launch an investment strategy that can serve you well throughout your lives together by following these few basic steps: * Identify your goals. When you start out, you may have short-term goals, such as saving enough for a down payment on a house. As you move through the years, your goals will become longer-term in na-

ture. For example, if you have children, you might set a goal of helping them pay for college. And you will need to establish a goal of saving for retirement. Your first step toward achieving all these goals is identifying them. * Commit to regular investing. When you begin your careers, you and your spouse may not have a lot of disposable income, but you still need to commit yourselves to putting aside some money each month — even if it’s only a small amount — for investment purposes. If you each have an employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k) plan, contribute as much as you can afford. * Reconcile your investment styles. You and your spouse may have different orientations toward investing. By nature, you might be an aggressive investor, while your spouse could be more conservative, or vice versa. This divergence does not have to be a problem, but you should communicate your preferences clearly to each other when choosing investments together. If you and your spouse each compromise a bit, you can come up with a joint portfolio that

works for both of you. At the same time, when you each have an account, such as a 401(k), you may not want them to look alike by containing duplicate investments. Instead, consider building portfolios that complement each other and that can help fill in any gaps that exist in your joint investment strategy. * Be co-managers. You probably know many married couples in which one spouse handles all the finances and investments. This isn’t necessarily a good model to follow. You and your spouse will benefit if you both are familiar with your investment situation and capable of making decisions. Nobody knows what the future will hold, and if one spouse suddenly finds himself or herself in charge of the family finances, with no preparation, it can lead to troubles. By following these suggestions, you can make long-term investing a rewarding part of your marriage. And the sooner you get started, the greater those rewards can be. This article was provided by Edward Jones.

“Cheaper By The Dozen” Casting Call

Lakeside Summer Stage has announced that “Cheaper By The Dozen” will be the choice for the July 28th and 30th production directed by Brenda Bou Sliman. This story was written by Frank Gibreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey and adapted by Christopher Sergel. The story takes place in the 1920s with Mr. Gilbreth, one of the great pioneers of industrial efficiency, applying his unorthodox methods to raising his large family. The results are terribly embarrassing, funny and extremely effective. Auditions will be held on Saturday, June 27 at 3 p.m. in the Upper Room on Second St., Lakeside. There are many adult roles including the father and mother, the doctor, the teacher and the housekeeper. There are several young adult roles of the eldest daughter and two male friends. And, of course, there are many children’s roles ranging in age from six years old to teenagers. Children should be at least six years old and able to read. Please bring a photo with contact information written on the back. No gate fees are charged to audition. Please park at the main gate on Rt. 163 and take the shuttle to Second Street. For more information contact Sandy Ramicone at 937-620-7381.

Experience Baseball’s History by Watching the Squires Play Ball The Spiegel Grove Squires are devoted to playing base ball the way it was played when the sport was created (and its name was two words). Sponsored by the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, the Squires host their first home match of the 2009 season at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 30 on the Center grounds. Their worthy opponents are the Great Black Swamp Frogs from Sylvania. Admission to the family event is free. Members of the Spiegel Grove Squires are volunteers. Their interest in base ball and history inspires them to demonstrate the sport as it existed in the 1860s. The “ballists” (19th-century word for players) wear reproduction uniforms and use period-style equipment. You won’t see gloves in use. Fielded balls are caught bare-handed, with an out being called even if the ball is caught after a bounce. Not only are the bats and balls very different from today’s equipment, so are the rules of play. A player who swears, argues with the umpire or leaves his shirt tail untucked faces a fine. Respect for other ballists and polite behavior are the rule. The Squires’ home games are played in the open field behind the Hayes Museum. The club also plays a vigorous schedule of away games. Check the Hayes Presidential Center website www.rbhayes.org for a complete list of year-round special events.

Kelleys Island Residents Complete The Big Read Challenge Kelleys Island residents were joined by David Kipen, Director, National Reading Initiatives, National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) on April 30 to celebrate all 128 residents completing The Big Read challenge. The celebration was held at the Kelleys Island Library, a branch of the Sandusky Library. Currently, 400 communities are encouraging literary reading through The Big Read programming from September 2008 through June 2009. Kelleys Island residents read “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Harper Lee’s classic tale of racial prejudice. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. The Big Read answers a big need. Reading at Risk: A Survey of Literary Reading in America, a 2004 report by the National Endowment for the Arts, found that not only is literary reading in America

declining rapidly among all groups, but that the rate of decline has accelerated, especially among the young. The concerned citizen in search of good news about American literary culture would study the pages of this report in vain. The Big Read aims to address this crisis squarely and effectively. It provides citizens with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their communities. The initiative includes innovative reading programs in selected cities and towns, comprehensive resources for discussing classic literature, an ambitious national publicity campaign, and an extensive Web site providing comprehensive information on authors and their works. The NEA inaugurated The Big Read as a pilot project in 2006 with ten communities featuring four books. The Big Read continues to expand to include more communities and additional books. By 2009, approximately 400 communities in the U.S. will have hosted a Big Read since the program’s 2007 national launch. David Kipen, had vowed to eat a copy of “To Kill a Mockingbird” if any one of the 128 residents of Kelleys Island, the four square mile island in Lake

Erie, failed to read the book. Kipen said he had long wanted to find a town “small enough and brave enough to accept the challenge of dragooning every last literate resident, without exception, into tackling its chosen book.”

This summer, the Aquatic Visitors Center will again open its doors to the public, thanks to a partnership between the Ohio Department of Natural Resources-Division of Wildlife and Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory. The center joins Stone Lab and the South Bass Island Lighthouse as landmarks operated by Ohio State in the Put-in-Bay area, giving visitors a variety of ways to explore history while learning more about Lake Erie science and research. The Aquatic Visitors Center on South Bass Island, formerly a State Fish Hatchery, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, June 18-August 23. Admission is free, with youth programs planned each Saturday from 4 to 5 p.m. The public is invited to fish for free from the center’s docks; children under age 16 can fish without a license. “The Aquatic Visitors Center gives you a unique opportunity to get face-to-face with live Lake Erie creatures as well as historical hatchery artifacts, hands-on displays, and access to the fishing pier,” says Tory Gabriel, Ohio Sea Grant Fisheries Program Coordinator. “Rods and reels will be available on loan and bait will be provided. It’s great for families and anyone who loves the lake and wants to learn more about it.” In addition, Science and History Tours of Gibraltar Island and Stone Laboratory will be held each Wednesday, June 17-August 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A $10 tour fee supports Stone Lab student scholarships. To get to Gibraltar, meet at the Boardwalk Restaurant Harbor Taxi Landing on South Bass Island by 10:45 a.m. to catch a water taxi at a cost of $6 round-trip. For an additional $10,

participants can order a boxed lunch to enjoy after the tour. Orders must be placed when arriving on the island. Visitors can also check out the view from the South Bass Island Lighthouse tower and learn about Lake Erie issues and the area’s historical shipwrecks every Thursday through Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. starting June 18. The final tours for the summer will be held Friday, August 21. Tickets are $2 per person to climb to the top of the lighthouse, free for children younger than six. For more information about any tour, contact the Stone Lab Bayview Office at 419.285.1800 or visit http://stonelab.osu.edu/tripsandtours/islandtours/. Gibraltar Island, the South Bass Island Lighthouse, and the Aquatic Visitors Center are owned and managed by Ohio State University. The Ohio State University’s Ohio Sea Grant program is part of NOAA Sea Grant, a network of 30 Sea Grant programs dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of marine and Great Lakes resources. Birders Clubs -- Beyond the Binoculars Bird watching is one of the fastestgrowing hobbies in the country. It’s easy, inexpensive and relaxing. Best of all, wild birds are beautiful and fascinating to watch. They’re also wonderful to listen to, and with more than 800 species in North America alone, there is something for everyone. Bird watching (or birding, for short) has been popular for hundreds of years, sparking the curiosity of everyone from scientists to conservationists to bird enthusiasts. No matter what their motivation, a birder is simply someone who enjoys watching wild birds. Whether you watch them while hiking in the woods or sitting in your backyard, practically anyone can consider themselves a birder -- and more people do every day. In fact, birding clubs are set up all around the world. From historic clubs like the National Audubon Society to up-and-coming ones like the Wild Delight Birders Club, thousands of bird lovers continually come together to celebrate their outdoor pets. The National Audubon Society is considered by many as the nation’s premier birders club. Established in 1905, this organization is made up of more than 500 local chapters. Today, the National Audubon Society engages millions of people of all ages and backgrounds in positive conservation experiences.

The Wild Delight Birders Club is a great example of another national birders club, one that emphasizes fun and aims to make bird watching and bird feeding as enjoyable as possible. This club allows members to enter photo contests, learn about wild birds through interesting videos and articles and provides an avenue for birders to share information through an easyto-use online message board. Throughout the U.S. the number of birders -- and clubs -- continues to grow every year. For birders, there are many things a club enables you to do -- access valuable resources, stay updated on trends, develop birding skills, be a part of conservation movements and have fun. However, one of the biggest benefits of joining a birders club is networking. Birding is an excellent way to meet people who share a common interest and, in many cases, develop lasting friendships. However, unlike clubs established solely for entertainment, birders clubs are unique because of the scientific data they often provide. Ornithology (the scientific study of wild birds) is a science with a relatively short history, and many of the observations made and shared in birders clubs are very helpful to the research conducted by scientists. Everyone from amateurs to professionals has the ability to contribute their knowledge.
