TELLTALES BY JOHN SCHAFFNER
Take a look at the calendar, folks! Our season is going to be just a bit longer! Memorial Day is early (May 24) and Labor Day is late, September 7. May and October are my favorite months around here. In May, everything turns green and the flowers all bloom at the same time. October is also truly nice, with the leaves turning to gold and orange, and the weather stays nice here longer. So, let’s think about our season as being from midApril to the end of October. So much to enjoy! ––––––– We had 100 entries in our Find Wylie contest this week. Our winner is Paula Christensen of Fremont who found Wylie in the Otterbein North Shore ad on page 8A last week. Paula wins a $20 gift certificate to Mango Mamas. Our “Win it on the Web” Contest winner this week is Steve Tusen of Port Clinton chosen from 70 entries. Tom wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. We’ll hide Wylie again this week and when you find him, fill out the Find Wylie Ad and drop it at our office (Beacon Place Shopping Center, next to Goodwill) or … click on Wylie on our website homepage, www.thebeacon.net or … click on the “Win it on the Web” icon. You could be our next winner. ––––––– We have a wonderful human interest story this week on Greg Perry, a local son, who has done some remarkable things as a DECA teacher, following in the footsteps of his mentor, Tom Maher. His acceptance speech for his Local Hero Award is available to be viewed online at www.thebeacon.net. It is worth a watch. ––––––– The Conestoga Neighborhood Group, Port Clinton’s east side resident’s group, is at it again this Saturday, May 16 with another clean-up project. The dumpster will be located on the corner of Walnut and Third and will be available to everyone within the Conestoga neighborhood. The dumpster will be available all day, however volunteers will be there to assist folks only from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. So, if you need assistance carrying heavier items, call Sue Jonke at 419-734-9300. ––––––– A plant and bake sale will be held this Saturday, May 16 at the Shelter House at John Braun Park on Catawba starting at 9 a.m. They will have an assortment of plants and bulbs for sale from members of the Catawba Garden Club. ––––––– The Ottawa County Genealogical Society will meet this Tuesday, May 19 at 7 p.m. in the Ida Rupp Public Library in Port Clinton. The speaker will be Marge Waterfield, a fulltime researcher and instructor for more than 20 years. Her seven generation cookbook was featured in Better Homes and Gardens magazine. She has also been interviewed by the “Today” Show. Her topic will be “Are your ancestors hiding in federal records?” ––––––– The Graytown/Rocky Ridge Baseball Association is having its annual Chicken Barbecue on Saturday, May 16 from 11 a.m. until sold out at the Graytown School. Dinners are $8 for a half-chicken dinner and $6 for a quarter-chicken dinner. ––––––– The Navy Sea Cadet Corps is looking for new recruits. They have provided youth with an anti-drug and anti-gang environment to foster their leadership abilities, broaden their horizons through hands-on training. They have a facility located in the Lake Erie Business Park. For more information contact Brian Mullins at 419-960-7021. Their website is www. firelandsnscc.org. ––––––– Gerald Bauer will present a program “Encountering God in Nature” at the Rosemary Schramm Gallery, 113 W. Sixth Street, Port Clinton this Tuesday, May 19 at 7 p.m. Bauer is a Lutheran Pastor who lives in Huron and is the author of the book, “Invited to Serve”. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. ––––––– The Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce is looking to honor veterans for Memorial Day. They want to display photos honoring them at Flat Iron Park May 22-29. They will blow up the photos on an 11x17 poster with a red, white and blue ribbon for only $8.50. If you would like your service man or woman’s photo featured, call the Chamber at 419-8980479 or stop by the chamber office at 178 W. Water Street. Deadline is May 20.

National Award for PC Native BY CHRIS MCBAIN-BERRY ASSISTANT EDITOR Greg Perry was not your ordinary student. Not when he was in Port Clinton High School and graduated in 1989 or when he graduated from The Ohio State University in 1993. Greg is now an extraordinary high school teacher who teaches a marketing class, DECA, at Beachwood High School near Cleveland. He inspires not only his students but also everyone else he meets. Because of that, and because he and his students staged the Greg Perry Green Dream, the largest green products and services expo in Ohio, he is the recipient of this year’s Heart of Green Award - Local Hero, a national honor bestowed on him by “The Daily Green” newspaper. The class project raised $150,000 in 2008 and exceeded that mark in 2009—all to create the Ultimate Green Classroom, a model classroom completely refurbished with sustainable, nontoxic materials, powered by the sun and open to the school and to the community. “My DECA class in Port Clinton was the most pivotal class I have ever taken,” Greg said. Remembering his school days he described himself as very academic and used to the daily schedule and expectations. Then came the DECA class taught by Tom Maher. “There was no formal structure, and Tom put students in charge of what was going to happen! Never before did I have a teacher who empowered the class. It threw me! We learned to be responsible. We were forced into business situations with the Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce, to have lunch with employees and to get involved with civil projects. It was networking with adults. It exposed us to things in life like travel and good restaurants…and it prepared us to be successful," he said. His methods for his own teaching may have had roots in Port Clinton. He doesn’t teach out of a textbook. Instead he teaches from what is really happening in the world. From that came the “green idea”. “You can’t escape hearing about the green way of life.” After studying, students wanted to create a showcase to show others how to become more “green” in their thinking. For instance, buy re-useable shopping bags. That idea expanded and became the Green Dream. In addition to his teaching position, Greg operates re-Design, his own interior decorating business, which serves clients across the country. Perseverance is also part of his character. As he and his students began working on their 2009 Green Dream event, Greg was diagnosed with cancer. He started intense chemotherapy treatment at the beginning of this year. He is no stranger to a hard fight. At age 6, he was paralyzed from the neck down in an accident and was told he would never walk again, but he defied those odds. Now he continues to teach his class and for awhile did it remotely using Skype. He is making the Green Dream live on. “I love Port Clinton. There are such amazing natural resources. I appreciate all Port Clinton has to offer,” he said of his hometown. Greg is the son of Bill and Renee Perry of Catawba.

Local Agencies Hit Hard by State Budget Shortfalls BY JOHN SCHAFFNER
It’s another conundrum…local community service, jobs and health agencies are searching for money. The State of Ohio is slashing funding all over the place, and agencies like the Ottawa County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, Jobs and Family Services and Transitional Housing are on a hunt for resources. Last week, United Way in Ottawa County convened a group of these organizations to talk about the availability of federal funds being made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act passed by Congress earlier this year. Some agencies, like the Ottawa County Transportation Agency, have done well finding the “Stimulus” dollars. Others have not. Most are finding that going after federal money is only covering for the loss of funding from the State of Ohio. The demands for services are increasing as economic forces continue to trend downward. Those same forces are cutting revenues coming in to Ohio state government. Many of the programs being slashed are for mandated entitlement benefits. There are programs moving forward in Ottawa County. Summer Youth programming and job training, contracted through WSOS Community Action Commission, has received funding, but most of the dollars must be spent by the end of September. Applications for training can be picked up at the Job Store located in the Ottawa County Resource Building on State Route 163 between Oak Harbor and Port Clinton. There are also expanded programs for adult and dislocated workers there as well. WSOS has roughly $300,000 in funds to operate a youth employment program for individuals age 14-24. In addition, the agency received a boost to their Community Block Grant funds that Ottawa County commissioners describe as “very flexible”. More federal dollars are expected soon. Ottawa County MRDD continues to experience massive cuts in state funding and is currently reviewing all of their services, particularly those not mandated. Early intervention specialists are most at risk, as that program is being transferred to the Ohio Department of Education. They are looking for volunteers to help provide support services to their population, long since mainstreamed into the community. They are particularly interested in getting younger volunteers (ages 21-35) who can provide “peer support”. The local Health Department is suffering from state budget cuts affecting their immunization and family planning. There will also be a reduction in staff to provide sanitary inspection for restaurants and marinas this summer. Local Agencies … continued on page 2A

SoundOff Dear Editor, I just returned from a week in Chicago attending the 2009 Wind Power Conference and Expo. Among the many speakers I met, T. B Pickens was the most interesting. His take on where this country is headed energy-wise was a sobering knock out. As you might know, to date he has spent $60 million dollars of his money on media, trying to wake up the American public and all officials. Suggest your review his organization and consider joining. See pickensplan.com for further details if interested. If the Republicans have any brains left, they would not have allowed the Obama administration to steal this critical subject from our 2010 platform! Joe Scarborough was also a speaker and was very disappointed with our leaderless political behavior! I had a chance to again meet and talk with Governor Strickland and Lt. Governor Lee Fisher during the Ohio Manufacturers reception. They sounded and are acting very much like the old GOP! I met them in Houston at last year’s Wind Conference, and now in Chicago. Ohio had a very impressive show booth trying to lure new business into Ohio, and until now, the Republicans never bothered! FYI, these guys and the State of Ohio are VERY pro-active in the business/energy field, and job creation. (Thought we were the ones to do that)? Once again, we let the Democrats steal the limelight on issues we conservative Republicans should be leading! As Joe Scarborough said, if Republicans are going to run the same tired bunch, we will get killed again, and I agree. I hope the rumor that McCain (a good man) was going to be on the ticket again is just that. A rumor. And we don’t need any more local, state or federal job seekers and caretaker career politicians, etc. We need leaders with some vision. We had eight years to demonstrate conservative values and we (fill in the blank )‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌.? I was smitten with Mr. Pickens and his 81-year-old wisdom. If Republicans are not for domestic renewable energy, nuclear, clean coal, solar, etc., then we must be for importing 75% foreign oil during the next three years, and as Pickens says, much of it comes from our enemies. (Excluding Canada). If you have future party influence, get some folks out in front who are not on auto-pilot. My comments are given in the spirit of my closest friend, John Blatt. Schaffner has sponsored four new members so far this year. Dear Editor, We are writing today to introduce readers to a new group that is forming. For awhile there has been no outlet for young Republicans looking for other people who share their views. That is why we are announcing the formation of The Ottawa County Young Republicans. If you are between the ages of 18-40 and are interested in joining others with similar political beliefs, please feel free to contact us. You can contact Jennifer Widmer at 419-855-8258 or jentoes81@aol.com or Joel Mann at mann@manntechnologies.com. We are in the beginning stages of this process and would love to have your input as well as your support. Jennifer Widmer Joel Mann Genoa

Local Agencies Hit By State Budget Shortfalls Continued from front page One area that will increase significantly (from $1.6 million to $6 million) is in the Home Weatherization Assistance Program (HEAP) administered by WSOS. Eligibility standards have been expanded, and landlords are now eligible to apply for assistance in upgrading their rentals. This is a particularly good time for seniors and retirees living on fixed incomes to upgrade their dwellings to make them
more energy efficient and less costly to heat next winter. One positive note came out of the meeting. Joyful Connections, the local effort to safely accommodate child visitation and transfers, has received three years of funding from the Ottawa County Department of Job and Family Services through a federal Child Support Grant. However, Commissioner Arndt noted that changes are possible for the County Extension
Service, as the service run through Ohio State University is in the process of reorganization. The group plans on meeting again in the near future. As United Way in Ottawa County Director Chris Galvin noted, “Collaboration is what we do well. At this juncture, collaboration is critical with so many agencies scrambling for dollars. As is usually the case in a recession, as the needs rise, the dollars fall.

Continued from front page to play during that day of memories, including the Travelin’ Lounge Lizards and Phil Dirt and the Dozers. “It will be a full day of bands, beer food and fun say organizers, including Ottawa County Campaign Chairmen, Megan and Steve Lovitt.
The Beacon kind of let the cat out of the bag last week when they announced the golf cart raffle. They have also secured a second prize in the raffle, a scooter sponsored by Jimmy Catawba. The gates will open at 11 a.m. and the bands will begin to play at 12 Noon. An estimated 4,000 people made the pilgrimage to Gem Beach last year for the event that raised nearly $70,000 for the United Way in Ottawa County campaign. The experience was so successful, in fact, that the local marketing folks at United Way Campaign Headquarters have come up with a new event ‌ “Rock the Dockâ€? to be held from 3-7 p.m. on Saturday, June 20 at Lagoon Saloon in Nugent’s Canal, just south and west of Port Clinton off State Route 53. The featured band will be “Crooked Sundaysâ€?. They will have Lagoon Saloon’s fabulous pizza, and lots of raffles. United Way in Ottawa County will be regularly featured on the pages of The Beacon in the coming weeks, showcasing volunteers, spotlighting fundraising events, and examining the positive work they provide in Ottawa County for the community good. So, keep an eye out for more information in the coming weeks. Also, look for the Gem Beach Golf Cart popping up at a variety of locations.

YOU CAN’T CONTROL ,
THE MARKET
BUT YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR DECISIONS. Sometimes the market reacts poorly to changes in the economy. But just because the market reacts doesn’t mean you should. Still, if current events are making you feel uncertain about your finances, you should schedule a complimentary portfolio review. That way, you can help make sure you’re in control of where you want to go and how you’ll potentially get there.
Three things I noticed on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10: - The Davis Besse Nuclear Power Plant (and not just the steam cloud rising – the actual tower) was visible from just east of Clyde, Ohio, on Route 20. - It must have been a really good day for farming because there were LOTS of farmers working in their fields. - It’s definitely “fish-catchingâ€? time on the Sandusky River as it runs through downtown Fremont. In the early afternoon there were fisherman on the river banks, out in boats, and standing on ladders leaned against the retaining walls, all trying their luck. I hope they were catching the big ones. Let’s see now. What’s been happening lately? Oh. Yes. Did you know that the Community Market in Port Clinton now has a nice array of fresh sugar-free desserts? I asked for them when I was in the store a couple of weeks ago and was told the only thing like that they had available was prepackaged cookies. I bought some (and found two I liked – the chocolate chip and peanut butter kinds). But the store manager promised a bigger selection, and when I went in at noon last Friday I saw sugar-free apple and cherry pies as well as some fresh cookies on a table near the dairy case. I bought a cherry pie, ate a small piece at home that night, and found it was quite good. So that is a store that is really responsive to a customer’s request and I certainly appreciated seeing my request so quickly honored. Very good tasting so far this spring have been asparagus and strawberries. And I’ve found something new that is a real treat. You may not believe this‌ but roasted red beets are good! The flavor is quite different from the canned version. To roast beets, cut off the tops and the root end, wash them thoroughly, coat them with a little oil (or even a vinaigrette salad dressing), place them on a baking pan and roast at 350 degrees. Roasting time will depend on the size of the beets. Start testing for done-ness in about forty minutes. When fork-tender, pull the skin off them and cut beets into chunks. Eat them hot or let them cool, then refrigerate them to eat later. They are a real treat! Try some and see if you, too, don’t think they are quite good. -------I borrowed a book at the library about hosting fabulous parties because it featured a “Jane Austen Picnicâ€?. I really love the novels of Jane Austen so this idea appealed to me. (I am planning to entertain friends at a “Jane Austen Teaâ€? sometime this summer). But I’m not going to try to make the invitation suggested in the book. Called “A Novel Invitationâ€?, each person invited would receive a Jane Austen book with an invitation glued
into the center pages! It seemed a little “over the top to me – not to mention that it would totally ruin a nice book. Wouldn’t a fancy note card serve the same purpose and be far less expensive? Then we could concentrate, instead, on featuring a pretty table with some English style foods. Jane Austen herself would have been sure to like that better. -------I’ve been reading a biography of Patsy Cline, famed country and western singer of half a century ago. Patsy’s songs have endured and still are selling today. She is most famous for the song “Crazy but got her “start (after years of trying) with “Walkin’ After Midnight on the Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts Show. According to the book, “Honky Tonk Angel, Patsy detested the “Walkin song but Janette Davis, the show’s talent coordinator who staged the acts on the Godfrey Show, insisted that Patsy sing it. The studio audience went wild, and for a few weeks Cline sang on another Godfrey weekly show. I remember Arthur Godfrey, and I imagine many of you readers recall him, too. My mother listened to his daily radio show often. When I “encountered him in the Patsy Cline book, I looked on the internet for information about Godfrey. It said that Godfrey was born in 1903. By the early thirties be had become popular on (local) Washington D.C. radio with a folksy, down-home style. By the forties he had moved to New York City. He became nationally known when he took the microphone to describe Franklin Roosevelt’s funeral procession. He affected a neighborly, sympathetic attitude and broke down on air when describing President Harry S. Truman’s car in the procession. The nation was moved by his broadcast. Soon Godfrey had a morning show where he talked, sang, hosted and interviewed guests. He also had a show called “Talent Scouts where he introduced new young talented performers to the emerging television audience. His morning radio show soon was simultaneously televised, making Arthur Godfrey one of the first stars to make the switch successfully from radio to television. Eventually he surrounded himself with talented young people who appeared regularly on that show, too. Godfrey was a supreme salesman, often ignoring or spoofing the scripted commercials. His viewers loved his seeming honesty and bought the products he pitched. He appeared on the air almost daily and became fabulously wealthy. Behind the scenes Godfrey was a very controlling individual who wanted things done only his way. One of his regular singers, Julius LaRosa, was gaining a lot of attention and
getting more fan mail than Godfrey. Nobody knows for BY VIRGINIA PARK sure exactly why, but LaRosa was fired by Godfrey during a live broadcast. A public outcry ensued because viewers genuinely liked LaRosa. It was the beginning of the end to Godfrey’s popularity. His immense ego began to take over and his shows were not as heavily watched. Soon he fired other performers, too, and had problems with other big stars such as Ed Sullivan. Patsy Cline and Pat Boone made appearances on the Godfrey Show after other entertainers had been fired. (Patsy was only on the show a few times. But it did get her national recognition at a time she badly needed it.) In later life Arthur Godfrey appeared in four movies and briefly co-hosted “Candid Camera, on television with Allen Funt. Their relationship did not endure as they could not work together. Over the next ten years Godfrey lost the rest of his following and never regained his immense popularity. He died in 1983, age 80, of emphysema. -------This Friday, Saturday and Sunday there will be a big family event at Westfield Franklin Park in Toledo. Safety ideas for children and other family members will be featured. Law enforcement, bike and water safety, Block Watch programs and a blood donor drive will be on the agenda. There will be lots of child-oriented fun events. This Baby and Child “Expo is free and will be held near the food court at Franklin Park Mall. The public is cordially invited to attend. It sounds like a very worthwhile way for a family to spend some time. -------I almost forgot --- I was writing about Patsy Cline! Patsy is one of my favorite singers and I still enjoy listening to her songs. Among the favorites are “Sweet Dreams, “She’s Got You, “I Fall to Pieces, “Strange, “You’re Stronger Than Me, “Why Can’t He Be You?, “Leaving on Your Mind, “Faded Love and of course, everybody’s favorite, “Crazy. (“Crazy was written by Willie Nelson). Her music still sells, more than forty years after her death. The book “Honky Tonk Angel cites many interviews with people who knew Patsy. She was a great performer but had a lot of problems in her personal and professional life. She could be vulgar and indiscreet but she was brave and fearless in pursuit of her career. She was on the road a lot and was killed in a plane crash just when her career had really taken off. Patsy died in 1963 at age 30, leaving behind a husband and their two young children.

Peace Lutheran Kids “Joining Hands for Hunger May 2nd was officially “Join Hands Day in America, when organizations across the country reached out to help neighbors in need. Swearing-in Ceremony for CASA The Ottawa County CASA Program held a swearing-in ceremony for five new Court Appointed Special Advocates in April. Ottawa County Probate and Juvenile Court Judge Kathleen L. Giesler administered the oath to Connie Drummond, Cyndi Childress, ShirLee Eberle, Jennifer Hensley and Sara Hanselman as volunteer Guardians Ad Litem in Ottawa County. Executive Director Kami Sayre and Board Treasurer Connie Fabian hosted a reception to welcome the new volunteers following the ceremony. A CASA volunteer is a trained volunteer
who advocates for an abused, neglected, or dependent child in court. In order to become a CASA Volunteer, one must complete thirty hours of training. This training includes information concerning child abuse, neglect, communication skills, court procedures, culture awareness, and child development, domestic violence, and substance abuse. For anyone interested in becoming a CASA volunteer, call the CASA office at 419-734-7705, and you will receive a packet of information for further review. The next training is scheduled to begin in July.

Local Woman Translates Lessons into Braille
Rene Wilson, resident of The Vineyard on Catawba, has been translating Sunday school lessons and books into Braille since 1985. This outreach started very simply, while talking to a friend on the golf course. A Methodist church in Phoenix, Arizona, had need of more people to learn Braille and translate Sunday School lessons into Braille. This church, near Fountain Hills, Arizona, had a large outreach to blind persons in the Arizona area and from there to the USA and then to missions around the world. Rene studied the Braille alphabet for nearly two years and then took a thirty-page test she had to send in to the Library of Congress. She passed and has been translating lessons ever since. Richard and Rene (Irene) Wilson met as teens in a church choir in Zanesville, OH. “Doc” went on to become a family doctor in Fremont. The Wilson’s have four children and retired to Arizona. In 2003, they moved back to Ohio to be near their daughter and son-in-law in Fremont. The Wilson’s villa at The Vineyard reflects a Southwest influence and provides a casual background where Rene continues to translate monthly lessons into Braille. Dr. Richard Wilson passed on after 69 years of marriage. But Rene “keeps on, keeping on.”
Grant Awarded to Help Supply Food to Seniors and Their Pets It’s a great time to be a senior citizen in Ottawa County. Or the furry companion of one, for that matter. Thanks to a new partnership with Ottawa County Senior Resources and a grant obtained from the Banfield Charitable Trust and in conjunction with the Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) Humane Society volunteers will soon be hitting the highways of Ottawa County with Ottawa County Senior Resources staff delivering pet food to the dogs and cats of homebound seniors. Of course, the seniors themselves will be receiving fresh meals prepared and delivered by Ottawa County Senior Resources. “This is truly an exciting program,” stated Lisa Ramirez, president of the HSOC upon receiving news of the grant. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to assist Ottawa County Senior Resources in helping the senior citizens of Ottawa County provide nutritious food for their pets.” While the date for the kick off of the program has not yet been announced, volunteers from the Humane Society will ride along with Home Delivered Meal drivers to the homes of senior citizens who are unable to leave their residences. While the Home Delivered Meal drivers will provide meals for the seniors, Humane Society staff will deliver food to their pets. “This is a very practical idea,” Humane Society board member Chris Marcinko stated. “In these tough economic times, many folks in the community are unable to afford quality food for their pets. This can lead to animals being left at the Humane Society’s shelter, which is already at capacity. We hope that by bringing free pet food to the homes of folks who need it, more pets can remain happily with their owners where they belong. It’s a win-win situation.” In addition to the foods being obtained through the MOWAA grant, the two organizations plan to initiate a pet food drive to ensure that enough pet
food can be stockpiled to create a lasting program for the furry friends of Ottawa County’s seniors. “Donations are always welcome,” Ramirez stated, noting that donors are welcome to bring cat or dog food for usage in the program to the Humane Society’s shelter located at 2424 East Sand Road in Port Clinton. The Humane Society of Ottawa County is a 501c(3) no-kill animal shelter that was established in 1976. Since that time it has grown to be an important service to the community, not only for animals, but for adults and children as well. The organization prides itself in caring for the animals of Ottawa County and endeavoring to help as many animals as possible by correcting abuse and neglect, spaying/neutering each animal, providing medical care to those in need, and adopting abandoned, surrendered and abused animals to new loving homes. Their goal is to turn unwanted, uncared for and abused animals into loving members of new families. Ottawa County Home Delivered Meal Program is one of many programs that Ottawa County Senior Resources provides to the county’s senior citizens and their caregivers. The Home Delivered meal programs offer both hot and frozen meals to residents of Ottawa County who meet the following criteria: 60 years of age or older, homebound, unable to participate in the senior dining site program, unable to obtain food or prepare meals and there is no adult living Heart Institute in the same building or 419-557-6508 area, able and willing to prepare meals.

Put-in-Bay High School Places Ninth at Area I Envirothon Put-in-Bay High School sent two teams to the 20th Area I Envirothon sponsored and conducted by the Soil and Water Conservation Districts in NW Ohio. This year’s event took place on Wednesday, April 29 at the YMCA Camp Clay in Van Wert,OH. Out of 72 teams, Put-in-Bay’s Team #1 finished ninth overall with a score of 295. Over approximately 450 students competed in the five areas of soils, wildlife, forestry, aquatic ecology and current environmental issues. Teams consisting of three to five students answered 20 to 30 questions at each testing site. According to Carol Benner, Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District, “This is a competition for teams, not for individual students. The cooperative decision making process gives the Envirothon much of its unique appeal.” Approximately 25% of questions are site-specific and require site examination, resource material interpretation or the manipulation of environmental-testing equipment. Resource specialists created the tests and will staff the testing sites. Filling this important role for the 2009 event were Frank Gibbs, NRCS Resource Soil Scientist; John Mueller, ODNR Service Forester; Dennis Clement, Environmental Public Information Officer, Ohio EPA; Mark Mohr, Naturalist, Johnny Appleseed Park District and Anne CoburnGriffis, Director of Educational Services, Lima News. Top four teams were: Holgate FFA; Fort Jennings High School; Wynford High School and Delta High School. They will participate in the State Envirothon which will be held at Kenyon College in Knox County June 7-9.
Bill Derivan recently returned from Anaheim, California where he represented the Port Clinton High School DECA Chapter at the National Competition. Bill was also the captain of the Cross Country team, and a member of Leadership Council, French Club, National Honor Society, Pep Band, Jazz Band and is the Band Leader for the percussion section. As a junior he was a Buckeye Boys State Representative and is an “8-Play Senior” for the PCHS Drama Club. Bill is the son of Stephanie Duncan and Charles Derivan. Next year he will major in Telecommunications at Bowling Green State University.

Business May is Ohio Tourism Month As officially declared by Governor Ted Strickland and Lt. Governor Lee Fisher, May is Ohio Tourism Month. While National Tourism Week runs May 9-17, 2009, the Ohio Tourism Division is encouraging Ohio’s convention and visitors bureaus, attractions, restaurants and lodging facilities to take the entire month of May to showcase Ohio’s outstanding tourism experiences that as an industry contributed $38 billion and 454,000 jobs to Ohio’s economy in 2007. “This is peak travel planning time for visitors,” said State Tourism Director Amir Eylon. “We have assembled a number of partnerships for Ohio’s travel industry to combine our dollars and push our messages of affordable, high-value getaway opportunities out to consumers in Ohio and adjoining states.” To help get the word out about Ohio’s tourism opportunities, the Ohio Tourism Division developed partnerships with Ohio’s 20 Barnes & Noble Bookstores and Ohio Magazine. For the month of May, Ohio Barnes & Noble Bookstores are featuring Ohio Tourism Month with signage and book displays including Ohio travel/guidebooks, authors, photography, history, books about Ohioans and more. Additionally, each bookstore is holding a series of events that range from book author signings to events created in collaboration with Ohio travel entities to offer bookstore customers a taste of some of Ohio’s tourism attractions and experiences. The Ohio Magazine May issue includes a 10-page section on Ohio tourism opportunities, and 11,000 copies of Ohio’s official 2009 Travel Planner have been polybagged with Ohio Magazine for sale on newsstands in nearly 800 stores.
Ohio’s tourism advertising program also kicks into high gear this month. The 2009 campaign builds on last year’s “Too Much Fun for Just One Day” theme by promoting nearby, affordable, overnight getaways to enjoy uniquely Ohio experiences. The campaign utilizes both traditional (television, radio and print) and new (online and social) media appearing in Ohio and in out-of-state feeder markets. “A majority of Ohio’s visitors come from about 300 miles of Ohio, so our advertising program will market heavily to potential travelers in adjoining states and in Ohio,” Eylon said. “Ohio is well positioned geographically (within about 600 miles of roughly 60 percent of the U.S. population), from a value perspective and in terms of the variety of first-class, unique experiences the state offers to hold our own this year if travelers stay closer to home and seek affordable travel options.” Launched in 2008, the Ohio Tourism Division’s “Too Much Fun for Just One Day” campaign produced a 12-to1 return on investment and $473 million in visitor spending last year within about five months, according to research conducted by Longwoods International on behalf of the Ohio Tourism Division. About the Ohio Tourism Division The Ohio Tourism Division is the premier source of information for travelers and media about Ohio’s vibrant tourism experiences, attractions, and economy. Division marketing programs contributed to an estimated $38 billion in visitor sales in 2007 and 454,000 jobs sustained by visitors to the state. A part of the Ohio Department of Development, the Division’s mission is to promote and celebrate Ohio’s unique travel opportunities and market the state’s outstanding quality of life.

Financial Focus Are You Neglecting Your 403(b) Plan? Are you a teacher? Or are you employed by a non-profit organization? In either case, you may have GARY COON, a 403(b) retireEDWARD ment plan availJONES able to you. Your INVESTMENTS 403(b) is similar to 401(k) plans offered by companies, yet some evidence suggests that participation in 403(b) plans is lower than that found in 401(k)s. If you’re not taking advantage of your 403(b), you may want to reconsider — because your plan can provide a big boost to your retirement savings. If you’re not familiar with a 403(b), you’ll want to understand the key benefits: * Tax-deferred earnings — Your money grows on a tax-deferred basis, which means it can accumulate faster than if it were placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. * Pre-tax contributions — Typically, you fund your 403(b) with pre-tax dollars, so the more you put in, the lower
your annual taxable income. (Some 403(b) plans may allow a Roth option, which allows your earnings to grow tax-free, provided you meet certain conditions. However, your contributions are made with after-tax dollars.) * Variety of investment options — You should have a variety of investment choices with which to fund your 403(b), so you can build a portfolio that is appropriate for your risk tolerance and time horizon. Given these features, why aren’t more people participating in their 403(b) plans? One key reason seems to be that many eligible employees, especially teachers, also are covered by a pension plan — and they think a pension, combined with Social Security, may be enough to meet
your 403(b), you may find some extra challenges in 2009, because the rules governing 403(b) plans have changed. Previously, your plan may have allowed you to invest with several 403(b) providers, or “vendors,” and you could make tax-free transfers between them. Under new IRS rules, however, you can now move assets from one vendor to another only if both vendors are on your plan’s “approved” list. Consequently, many employers will likely reduce the number of 403(b) vendors and investment options, so you’ll have to evaluate the new “approved vendor” list to see which vendors would be most fitting for your financial goals. In any case, if you aren’t already contributing to your 403(b), start now. And if you already are participating in your plan, make sure you’re getting the most out of it — someday, you’ll be glad you did. This article was provided by Edward Jones.

their retirement income goals. But that’s probably not true. You’ll likely need at least 80 percent of your working income during retirement — and that figure could easily rise, depending on your retirement lifestyle. Consequently, you will need to exploit every single avenue of retirement savings — including your 403(b) plan. In 2009, you can defer up to $16,500 of your salary to a 403(b), plus an additional $5,500 if you’re 50 or older. You can put in another $3,000 if you have 15 or more years of service with a qualified organization and you contributed, on average, less than $5,000 a year to your 403(b) plan. Of course, you may not be able to put in the maximum annual amount to your 403(b) plan. But if your employer matches part of your contributions, you should at least consider contributing enough to earn the match — otherwise, you’re walking away from “free money.” While it’s often a good idea to contribute to

Golf – To a Six-Year-Old
Golf is a very tough sport to learn to play. The swing is intricate, and each shot presents a different challenge. It can be extremely frustrating as a tiny malfunction in one’s swing can cause a large mistake in the result. It can take a whole lot of swings with an odd bunch of sticks to EXP. 5-29-09 get a small ball into a tiny hole. Personally, I don’t think it’s an accident that “golf â€? spelled backwards is “flog.â€? So‌how can you teach golf, (or any other sport), to a young child? The popular scenario is to put them into the activity at an early age expecting the child to prosper and attain a high skill level. It can get to be an intense training program. The reality is that many kids who begin early also quit early. The most important thing we can do to encourage kids to take up a sport and stick with it is to make it fun for them. It should be play. The focus should be on getting them involved in a low key way. How talented they are at a young age is not the major issue. You can teach almost any skill and make a game out of it. Often, the kids will make up their own game if you let them. Take the delightful six-year old Sophie, for example. (I confess she is our granddaughter.) She has owned a small pink golf bag and clubs for two years, compliments of Grandpa. During that time, playing golf has meant riding in a golf cart, putting (pushing a ball into the hole), swinging (imitating a hockey slap shot), and getting lemonade from the pro shop. The lemonade was the best part. Getting to wear a pink hat was a bonus. Grandpa was generally the one who initiated the visit to the course and they had a great time together. This year, she is the one asking to play golf and is determined to hit the ball better. She doesn’t have the 1PG VKOG V[RGUGVVKPI EJCTIG YKNN CRRN[ KH TGSWKTGF patience, or desire, to take a lot of instruction, but she will try if the teaching tip is short and sweet. I was conned into playing golf with her in the front yard a couple weeks ago. She knows an easy mark when she sees one! We began by trying to hit the trashcan lid which we placed several yards away. That got boring in a hurry for Sophie and it became far more exciting to see how far she could hit it. After a tip from Grandpa about not making a 360 degree twirl with each swing, she began to make contact more frequently and that was even more fun. There was a lot of celebrating if she hit it across the driveway. She soon invented a game which she liked much better than my trashcan lid event. It became a race to see who could hit their ball to every tree in the yard and complete the circuit first. It was a stitch. She would get set, swing until she hit the ball, run to it and repeat the process. It slowed her down to look over her shoulder to make sure I wasn’t gaining on her, but she still focused on hitting the ball. The terrific part, for me as a coach, was that she was getting better and better. She made solid contact more often and her aim improved. Darkness forced us to quit and we played every day after that. She had a blast. So did I. Who knows if Sophie will get serious about golf? The chances of her sticking to it are much better if her first experiences are enjoyable and devoid of pressure. She will be the one nagging her parents to play; not the other way around. What’s golf to a six-year-old? It’s playing with someone you love. It’s a race. It’s lemonade. It’s fun!

Scott Doty recently received the 2008 Ohio State Parks Leadership Award. Doty has over 29 years with Ohio State Parks with 10 ½ years as regional manager of the Lake Erie Islands, which includes Catawba, Kelleys Island, South Bass Island, Middle Bass Island and North Bass Island state parks. The well-respected park official was nominated by his peers for his professionalism and exemplary management skills. “Scott Doty consistently demonstrates the values, qualities and attitude that are expected of a successful manager,” said Ohio State Parks Chief Dan West. “His communication capabilities, community relations skills and coopera-
tive attitude have been instrumental in many projects and he makes customer service a top priority.” Doty’s staff appreciate how he listens to their contributions and encourages their growth as employees and leaders. He acts as a mentor, encouraging each to expand their knowledge and stressing work ethics and values that will benefit them throughout their careers. He is organized, efficient and willing to do whatever is necessary to accomplish objectives. He stays on course and conveys his passion to protect and enhance the natural resources en-

Birders
Kathy Clark, Judy Szabo-Stull and Diane Roten on their first birding adventure to Point Pelee National Park. It is reported that the birding this past weekend was some of the best ever with the weather bringing in the birds for the Events out at Magee Marsh. The guides were friendly, and 1000s of people attended. Bird banning was done on Saturday to help keep track of flight patterns and species. Black Swamp volunteers helped throughout the weekend.
Thousands of “Birders” invaded our area over the weekend to spend a little time with nature and our feathered residents. Thursday, the Jet Express took a large group of them to Point Pelee National Park across the Lake in Ontario, while still more filed through Magee Marsh and the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge.
