NUMBER 10

TELLTALES BY JOHN SCHAFFNER The Beacon is making some extra efforts to be “green” in its delivery so, starting this week, you can expect to see The Beacon delivered in “green” plastic bags. We are also seeking additional walk carriers in Port Clinton, Oak Harbor and on Catawba, which would facilitate our ability to place the papers on porches rather than in driveways. If you are interested in making some extra money and could use some weekly exercise, please contact our Circulation Manager, Bruce Dinse at 419-732-2154, or send him an e-mail at bruce@thebeacon.net. We are also thinking up novel ways for you to recycle your green delivery bag, like using them to hold used paint brushes, or using them to be used as packaging materials. Also, anyone who does NOT want The Beacon delivered to their residence should also call us at that same number. We will be happy to place you on our “do not deliver” list. –––––––– We had 118 entries in our Find Wylie contest this week. Our winner is Dave Vargo who found Wylie in the Golden i Jewelry ad on page 9A last week. Our “Win it on the Web” Contest winner this week is Carol Fetterman of Oak Harbor chosen from 73 entries. Both Dave and Carol win $20 gift cards from Friendship Food Stores. We’ll hide Wylie again this week and when you find him, fill out the Find Wylie Ad and drop it at our office (Beacon Place Shopping Center, next to Goodwill) or … click on Wylie on our website homepage, www.thebeacon.net or … click on the “Win it on the Web” icon. You could be our next winner. –––––––– Port Clinton Knights of Columbus Council 1750 will extend their weekly Lenten Fish Fry one more week while the big Fishing Tournament is going on. They will also be holding monthly Fish Fries starting May 8 at Bergeman Hall. –––––––– The Ballet School, under the direction of Mary Ann Snider, presents “Tights, Tutus and Tap Shoe…the Road to Ballet, Broadway and Beyond” on May 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the PCHS Performing Arts Center. I am sad to report that he and his wife Dawn have a young child, 13 year old Caitlyn, who has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on her upper jaw. She will be receiving treatment at the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center for quite some time. Walleye Is King…Again The 2009 Walmart FLW Walleye Tour, which began in Port Clinton on Wednesday, will bring in an estimated $2,681,920 for the area as a result of the estimated six-day stay of those participating in this first qualifying tournament of the season on Lake Erie. The Tournament is hosted by the City of Port Clinton and the Ottawa County Visitors Bureau. Records show that there will be a total of 532 people spending money for hotel rooms for a total of $255,360. That includes the 150 professional anglers, 150 co-anglers, 200 family members/press/special guests, 12 factory service personnel/sponsor reps., 10 television crew and 10 outdoors FLW staff. For the average of six days on site the food bill will reach about $127,680, and expenditures for gas and oil amount to $122,400. Miscellaneous items such as ramp fees, parking, shopping and tackle add up to another $319,200. Estimated advertising exposure equivalent for the newspapers and television is figured at a value of $208,000. Figures are provided by the FLW organization.

Put-in-Bay to Receive $2.2 Million Grant for Dock Facility Renovations Recreational boaters on the western basin of Lake Erie who are looking for short-term stays at the village-owned boat docks of Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island one day soon will enjoy improved amenities that better promote safety and access, thanks to the awarding of a $2,246,000 Boating Infrastructure Grant Program award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft, which will administer the grant and provide project oversight, the planned dock improvements will better serve the needs of thousands of boaters who visit the Lake Erie islands each summer. The grant money is not federal stimulus money, but instead comes from the Boating Infrastructure Grant Program that was authorized by Con- "Red Sky At Morning, Sailors Take spectacular gress in 1998 and is intended Warning"…another to provide funding for con- sunrise photo by Billy Market. struction and renovation of docking facilities that enhance boating for nontrailerable recreational boats measuring 26 feet or more in length. Restoration and Boating Trust Fund (www.wsfrprograms.fw.gov), which is comprised of excise taxes paid on fishing equipment, marine fuel, import duties and interest earnings on the fund. Funding for this program does require a minimum 25 percent contribution toward all project costs from the local grant applicant. In addition to the federal grant funding through the Boating Infrastructure Grant Program, the village of Put-in-Bay is contributing more than $1.2 million toward project costs. The overall scope of the $3.5 million project is to reconstruct the transient boat docks in Put-in-Bay that will include full water and electrical service, improved handicap-accessible areas, new security lighting and installation of an approved fire suppression system ODNR says the current village dock system, constructed during the 1950s and 1960s, is a major component to tourism in the Islands region of Lake Erie’s western basin and is a main source of revenue for Put-in-Bay. The Put-in-Bay transient docking facility serves as the largest marina on South Bass Island. For more information, contact Carl Miller, ODNR Division of Watercraft at (614) 265-6446 or John Wisse, ODNR Division of Watercraft at (614) 265-6695.

City Beach Cleanup Set for Saturday The Port Clinton City Beach and Park Cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 18th beginning at 9 a.m. Volunteers are needed and are asked to report to the Lakeview Park Shelter House with gloves, rakes and lots of energy! Please dress appropriately for the weather. The event, sponsored by the OSS Solid Waste District and the Port Clinton Recreation Department, began in the early 1990s when it was a part of the Lake Erie Shoreline Sweep, which was an annual spring effort to clean all of the beaches along the Lake Erie Shoreline. Those beaches included the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge / Crane Creek Beach, East

Harbor State Park Beach and the Port Clinton City Beach. On average, close to 100 volunteers have collected approximately three tons of debris at the Erie Shoreline Sweep event. Areas that have been cleaned during the event include the beach, Lakeview Park and Water Works Park area, an approximate one mile strip of valued shoreline. Past volunteers have included scout groups, high school science classes, service organizations, members of the Friends of Lakeview Park committee and concerned citizens who simply wanted to make a difference. A pizza lunch is being planned for volunteers after the event. Gloves

and bags will be provided. For more information on the event, call Brad Schwan at the OSS Solid Waste District 419-734-6783 or Tracy Colston of the PC Recreation Department 419-734-5522, ext. 6. The Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca Joint Solid Waste Management District also sponsors waste reduction, recycling, and reuse programs designed to increase recycling to meet state waste reduction goals. For more information call the District toll-free at 1-888-850-7224 or check out the District website at www.recycleoss. org.

Neighborhood Cleanup The Conestoga Neighborhood Group has announced its collaboration with City Park for the annual April 18 spring clean up. It’s a chance for everyone to de-clutter their property, meet neighbors and make the community shine. Dumpsters will be available at City Beach from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., so bring garbage and unwanted household items and enter for a chance to win a free gas card. For assistance with heavy items, contact Dave at United Way at 419-734-6645 no later than Friday, April 17. For help removing old stoves, refrigerators or air conditioners, call C&A Used Appliances at 419-734-5899 for pick up. Lunch, trash bags and gloves will be distributed.

SoundOff Dear Editor, As part of the planning committee of the Relay For Life of Oak Harbor, we would like to extend a big Thank You to many who helped make a very fun and exciting fundraiser possible. On Saturday, April 4 we held a Murder Mystery Dinner Theater at the Community Markets VFW Hall in Oak Harbor complete with a murder mystery show, spaghetti dinner, silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. We had a wonderful turnout and raised more that $2,000 to help find a cure for cancer. A big Thanks to the following without whom this event would not have been the success that it was: Short Attention Theatre, Community Markets, Heinz, Walmart, O’Hairons, Tanks Meats, Landmark Hair Studio, Village Chiropractic, Kroger, Mary’s Blossom Shop, Dollar General, Oak Harbor High School, Curves, GFS Marketplace, Oak Harbor Athletic Boosters, Grandma’s Backyard BBQ, Otto & Urban, Coffee Express, Relay For Life Teams, Jack and Sally Favro, Mr. and Mrs. Amon Hayes, Craig and Heather Newman, Bill and Lisa Reedy, Dorsie Peterson, Matt and Tammy Myers, Ray Myers, Michelle Sprott and especially all who attended the event. The Relay For Life of Oak Harbor Dear Editor, Now that the weather is getting nicer, more residents will be out and about on the peninsula. The MLHS would be pleased if you would patronize the businesses that have become members of the Lighthouse Society. Their support of the MLHS is vital in our endeavors to keep the history of the Marblehead area alive, through the museum and the future Life Saving Station / Education Center. Please support these businesses; Avery’s Café, Bassett’s Market, Bass Haven Marina, Bay Point, Bergman’s Orchards, Big Bopper’s Restaurant, Brown’s Dairy Dock, Dan Buckey’s Bed & Breakfast, Camp Runenmuck, Cleat’s Club, Collins LMT, Confectionary Candy, Crow’s Nest Restaurant, Danbury Pizza, Dianna’s Deli, Don’s Auto Body Shop, Dziak Art Gallery, George Danchisen’s Marathon Svc., Gordon Lumber, Holmes Auto Body Garage, Howard’s Garage, HyWay Bait, Jamestown Tavern, John Tracy’s Market, LaFarge North America, Lake Breeze Cottages, Lake Point Motel, Lakeside Association, Lighthouse Antiques, Lighthouse Resort, Marblehead Bank, Marblehead Galley Restaurant, Majestic Motel, Martha & Molly’s Gift Shop, Mary Pat’s Crafts, Mary’s Blossom Shop, Mike’s

Mary Hartman Marblehead Dear Editor, The Port Clinton Cheerleaders would like to give a big shout out “Thank You” to everyone who came out and made the Patty Albertson Benefit a huge success! It’s times like this when we are so lucky to live in a small community, where people still care about one another. A heartfelt thank you to all at the Second Street Diner. Thanks for letting us take over you restaurant. (For someone you didn’t even know.) Again a small community- how wonderful you all were. Your Port Clinton 2008/2009 Cheerleaders Dear Editor, Ayn Rand, in her 1957 book “Atlas Shrugged”, one of the best books ever written, had this to say: “When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion-When you see that in order to produce, you need permission from men who produce nothing- when you see money flowing to those who deal not in goods, but in favors- when you see that men get richer by graft and pull, than by work and your laws don’t protect you against them; but protect them against you- when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self sacrifice- then you may know your society is doomed.” Richard Mayberry in his recent Early Warning report said the supporters of the “stimulus” plan remind him of the Roman slave being marched down a pier toward a waiting galley and saying “Wow what a cool ship! I wonder what makes it go?” Unfortunately the Keynesian economics coming from the Obama camp is dead from the neck up and will simply create a tsunami of debt for our children. Will America ever again wake up to what our founders knew; that government is the problem, not the solution? Jim Boehm Port Clinton

BeaconBits First, before anything else, I want to apologize about any typos in last week’s Beacon Bits. I had written it and then forgot to edit and correct it before it was sent via email to The BY VIRGINIA PARK Beacon for printing. It did not get the final approval that it should have had before going to print. Sorry about that! I’ll try to do better today (and in the future). ~~~~~~ As I begin writing my column for this week, I’m sitting in my car aboard the “Shirley Irene” of the Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line. I’m on my way back from Kelleys Island to Marblehead on a wonderfully sunny Easter Sunday afternoon.

ten by Sarah Harder of Oak Harbor. Sarah’s essay won first place in the Joseph Fichter Scholarship state competition. Here is a paraphrase of some of the ideas she suggested in her essay: • use energy-efficient light bulbs • wash clothes in cold water and wash only full loads of laundry • carpool to work • keep your home thermostat set at a constant temperature – (70 degrees was what Sarah suggested) • use a dishwasher rather than hand washing dishes (but do only full loads, rather than partial loads) Congratulations to Sarah Harder, daughter of Raymond and Nancy Harder, on these good ideas. To help with solving the energy problems we all face, I decided to pass the gist of them along to readers of this column. Sarah’s picture was in the state newsletter. In that same newsletter were a couple of pictures of Phyllis Garn, also of Ottawa County. Phyllis was among the voting members of the National Farmers Union convention in Washington D.C., and she is shown attending the convention. ~~~~~~ I subscribe to the Put-In-Bay Gazette and there is a big picture on the front page. It depicts a huge cruise ship purportedly in the Put-In-Bay harbor. I have a sneaking suspicion that this is an April Fools joke since this is the April 2009 edition of the paper. I love the Gazette and I read it faithfully - but I hate being “fooled” like this. When I see something in a newspaper, I generally believe the story or a photo is factual. But I think this photo image might have been rigged up on someone’s computer! But here is something I read in the Gazette that is more believable – and I also read about it in an earlier newsletter from the Perry Group. The U.S. brig “Niagara” will be at South Bass Island twice this summer. Dates are June 26-29 and August 22- 24. So if you want to see it, be watching for more information about this event. Also in the “Gazette” this month are a number of ads for summer employment at the island… and there is some employment on Kelleys Island as well. ~~~~~~ For the fifth year The Marblehead Bank again is sponsoring a Lakeside Daisy Day run/walk. The race begins and ends on Alexander Pike. Date is May 9 and cost is $15 if you preregister and $18 if you register the day of the race. Each participant is also asked to bring a non-perishable food item or a home paper product to be donated to the Danbury Food Sharing program. That program will also be the recipient of this year’s proceeds from the race. Awards will be given and t-shirts will be handed out, while they last, to participants. This will be a fun thing to do and will also help families in need of food. And even if you are not going to walk or run, you could still donate to the food pantry and it would be appreciated not only by the sponsor but certainly by the recipients of the food. For further information, call 419-7332-6283 or 419-798-4471. ~~~~~~ Barbara Radebaugh, writing in the North Shore Retirement Community newsletter, states that apples are a great food. It’s beautiful out here on Lake Erie today. From the island the water’s surface looked almost as smooth as glass and now the ride is close to perfection - smooth and easy. As we approach the mainland, I can see faint traces of green appearing in what (from a distance) appear to be bare trees. One of these days we will be seeing green foliage breaking forth, a sure sign that warm weather is just around the corner. And I have noticed a lot of that chartreuse-y, yellow-green color in the foliage of the willow trees that border the water’s edges in many places in our county. Daffodils and crocus are in bloom. (What’s the correct plural of the word “crocus”? I don’t know. “Croci”, maybe, but my computer’s spellcheck likes “crocuses” better! I have not yet seen forsythia in bloom in our neck of the woods but surely it will be coming along soon, as will tulips and maybe some of the early lilacs. It is so good to see these glories of nature after that drastic winter we had around here. And, of course, we may yet see more winter weather. April often brings winter storms. But I am definitely ready to see the spring! ~~~~~~ The Ohio State University is again offering classes at its Lake It’s the virtually invisible Erie campus (on Gibraltar Island in the harbor of South Bass way to straighten your Island). Have you visited the Marblehead Lighthouse State Park lately? There have been many changes in the past years. The conical shaped lighthouse was built in 1821 with native limestone. The lighthouse has served many purposes throughout the years, guiding ships through the area and keeping watch during wartime. Today thousands of people visit the park in all seasons. Public and private tours of the lighthouse are available starting May through October and are conducted by staff and volunteers of the state park. The grounds also have a picnic area with a beautiful view. One project that has been underway since the summer of 2008 is the Marblehead Lighthouse State Park Brick Pathway. By purchasing commemorative bricks, funds raised

will help make even more improvements. The lighthouse keeper and family lived in the two-story Victorian house which is now a museum. The museum is staffed by the Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society and contains many donated items detailing the history of this area. One such display is the first fernal 3 1/2 order lens which is located in the front room of the museum. The museum gift shop offers nautical items for all ages. The Historical Society is currently conducting fundraisers to build a duplicate of the 1876 lifesaving station that was previously located a few hundred feet from the Coast Guard Station. The new lifesaving station will be located near the museum and will conduct educational programs detailing Lake Erie History. The Historical Society Docents invite you to tour the museum in conjunction with your lighthouse tour. Please visit the Marblehead Lighthouse State Park and enjoy the serene atmosphere.

Aspirin Use for Older Adults Should be Doctor-Directed BY CEINWEN PRICE HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE PORT CLINTON

The Task Force could not find clear evidence that the benefits of using aspirin outweigh the risks in people 80 years or older. These recommendations, published in a recent issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, do not apply to people who have already had a heart attack or stroke. So it would be best for your dad to discuss whether continued aspirin usage would be good for his health. If your dad is having trouble remembering to take medications, two suggestions may help. First, ask his doctor about a pill organizer. These are tools that can hold pills and are organized by days so that seniors can easily remember if they have taken their medications. Also, why not ask your father if he would consider companionship assistance. Home Instead Senior Care, for instance, hires CAREGivers to assist senior with various non-medical home care and companionship tasks such as medication reminders. The companionship of a CAREGiver and help with meal preparation and light housekeeping also may keep seniors healthier longer. For more information about Home Instead Senior Care, contact Ceinwen Price at 419-734-5050 or visit www.homeinstead. com. For more about aspirin usage, log on to: http://www.ahrq.gov/clinic/uspstf/uspasasmi.htm.

OFFICE,

Q. I’ve heard a lot through the years about the benefits of aspirin. What’s the latest? My 85-year-old father used to be good at taking all his medications and other non-prescription aids such as aspirin, but I fear he’s forgetting more and more. A. Please encourage your father to make an appointment with his doctor. Accompany him on the visit. If you can’t be there, ask a trusted friend, family member or professional caregiver to go with him. His doctor can determine if he’s taking his medications properly and regularly. Updated recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force say aspirin should be used by older men to prevent heart attacks and older women to prevent strokes, but once senior citizens reach age 80 it may become too risky to continue aspirin therapy due to the increased threat of a gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Patients and clinicians should consider risk factors - including age, gender, diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, smoking and risk of gastrointestinal bleeding - before deciding whether to use aspirin to prevent heart attacks or strokes, according to these new recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

The practicum consists of the participant interacting with a customer to determine if the customer is a prospect. This year the students were acting as if they were representatives of the Tractor Supply Company. Their goal was to develop a partnership with a local Agriculture Instructor in order to secure business with them before the next school year. Each team member competed separately in these three events, and then each individual score was totaled for an overall team score. This was the first time in the Oak Harbor FFA Chapter’s history that an Agriculture Sales team has ever competed at the state level.

Sports Annual “Chick” Schaffner Golf Classic Scheduled The 20th annual “Chick” Schaffner Memorial Charity Golf Classic will be held Monday, June 22 at Catawba Island Club’s new Arthur Hills designed 18-hole golf course. Proceeds from the classic will benefit Stein Hospice, a community based not-for-profit hospice serving five counties and the American Heart Association’s Ottawa County Heart Fund. The four-man scramble features shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. The entry fee includes 18-holes of golf, a cart, continental breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fee is $500 for a foursome, $125 per player. John Schaffner, publisher of The Beacon newspaper, started the classic in honor of his father, an avid golfer and

Catawba Island Club member. Henry “Chick” Schaffner, a retired vice president from Brush Beryllium Co. (now Brush Wellman), died in 1989 of a heart attack. His death was sudden, and he was not a patient of Stein Hospice, but John selected Stein Hospice as a beneficiary because of his affection for the agency. Over the past 19 years the “Chick” Schaffner Memorial Charity Golf Classic has raised more than $200,000 for charities. The event is sponsored by Brush Wellman Engineered Materials, Schaffner Publications, Inc., Catawba Island Club and Magruder Hospital. For more information, contact Molly Kavanaugh at 419625-5269.

A Coaching Dilemma ways play hard. You need to build positive stats and records. Send an intimidating message to other opponents. The object of competition is to win. Winning big is better. Develop confidence and a winning attitude. CON: You prove nothing by routing a non-competitive team. There is no incentive to improve if you can win easily. Your players won’t learn how to handle pressure if they don’t experience it. Padding the schedule with easy wins is false success. Your record is meaningless. It’s bad sportsmanship. Perspective: Coaches constantly face this decision. What do we really want to teach our athletes? Sportsmanship and behaving with honor are two of the tenets of sports which may be unwritten, but they are of critical importance. If we encourage punishing and embarrassing weak opponents, are we not teaching kids to be bullies? We need to value playing a worthy opponent. The best, and most exciting, contests are between closely matched players. We need good opponents to have great competition. Learning respect for rules, officials, coaches and opponents should be a by-product Saturday of playing sports. To actually accomplish this, coaches must th teach respect, every day to every player. They must make it important, talk about it and model it with their own behavior. The kids are watching. Parents also must understand Ottawa County Fairgrounds that having respect for others is important and support W. Is it OK for coaches to run up the score in a blowout game? In today’s climate of “win at all costs,” coaches are under pressure to win and win big. Having great stats has taken over as the main criteria for athletic success. Just watch any sport broadcast on TV and notice all the times a statistic is used to provide commentary. This emphasis puts heavy pressure on coaches (especially at the high school level) to win every game and to enable athletes to build a shiny resume for college recruiters. The fans are pleased, the community is excited, the parents are happy, and the coach enjoys a winning reputation. What’s so bad about that? Plenty, if you think learning respect should be a by-product of playing sports. This issue has recently raised a heated

debate due to a H.S. girls’ basketball game in Texas. The final score was 100 – 0. The winning team played hard, urged on by fans and coaches, until they scored the 100th point. After that, they played strictly to prohibit the other team from scoring. The story hit the national news, and opinions were strong about whether the coach was justified in his strategy or way out of line for sportsmanship reasons. The winning school decided to forfeit the game and fired the coach. According to the Superintendent, the decisions were based on the belief that the score was “shameful and an embarrassment …victory without honor is a great loss”. Should a coach run up the score? Fishermen gathered for three days of Walleye fishing on Lake Erie during the 2008 Walmart FLW Walleye tournament.

Walmart FLW Walleye Tour In Progress The 2009 Walmart FLW Walleye Tour will hold its first qualifying tournament of the season on Lake Erie in Port Clinton April 15-18. The tournament is hosted by the City of Port Clinton and the Ottawa County Visitors Bureau and will feature 300 anglers from 25 states and national television coverage on VERSUS. Pros are competing for a top award of $100,000 and coanglers will compete for as much as $20,000. “I am hoping for warmer water and clear water conditions,” said pro John Swanstrom of Superior, Wis., who won the 2008 Walleye Tour event on Lake Erie with a fourday total of 143 pounds, 7 ounces. “I have a few new tricks up my sleeve, and I don’t think anyone else will have their hands on yet.” Swanstrom said that with the recent cooling trend the water might not be as warm and therefore thinks that this tournament will be a crankbait bite. “I think we can expect

weights similar to last year if not bigger. The predominant weight class in Lake Erie is 2003 and those should be pushing seven pounds. I believe those fish will make up the majority of the anglers bag. The only reason we wouldn’t have another record breaking year would be if we couldn’t get out due to weather.” Water clarity and water temperature are the two main factors that Swanstrom will look at when he decides what areas to fish. “I am going to be targeting fish that are prespawn or postspawn females that are moving through transitional areas,” he said. “It’s not specific structure that I am looking for as much as the water clarity and temperature.” For more information about FLW Outdoors and its tournaments, visit FLWOutdoors.com or call (270) 2521000. Volunteers Needed for Fishing Tournament Extra hands are needed to assist professional anglers when the FLW Outdoors Walleye Tour rolls into Port Clinton April 15-18. Organizers of the tournament are seeking approximately 20 volunteers to fill several different shifts during the tournament. FLW Outdoors, named after Forrest L. Wood, the legendary founder of Ranger Boats, is the largest fishing tournament organization in the world. Eight volunteers are needed to assist with the morning launching of boats on Wednesday through Friday, April 15-17, from 5 till 7 a.m. These volunteers will assist professionals with launching boats and with parking at the

West Harbor Boat Launch. On Saturday, the field will be reduced to the 10 top participants, so volunteer help will not be needed at the boat launch. Ten to twelve volunteers are needed for the afternoon events each day from 2:30 till approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday as well. These volunteers will be located at Waterworks Park in downtown Port Clinton to assist with weighing the days’ catches. If interested in being a volunteer for the FLW Outdoors Walleye Tour and for more specific information, call the Ottawa County Visitors Bureau at (419) 734-4386 or 1-800-441-1271.

2009 Lake Erie Sport Fishing Outlook is Promising Lake Erie anglers should experience another year of quality fishing during 2009, according to biologists with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. “Over the years, Lake Erie has consistently provided some of the best fishing in the country,” said Roger Knight, Lake Erie fisheries program manager at ODNR, “We expect 2009 to be no different.” Excellent fishing opportunities await walleye and yellow perch anglers, as well as those who prefer other species like smallmouth bass, white bass, and steelhead, said Knight. Anglers are reminded that walleye and yellow perch fisheries are managed through an interagency quota system that involves Ontario, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio jurisdictions. Each jurisdiction regulates its catches to comply with quotas and minimize the risk of over-fishing the species. Quotas for the upcoming fishing season are determined through consensus agreement by the jurisdictions through the Lake Erie Committee of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission and are announced publicly in late March of each year. Walleye - Ohio walleye anglers will catch fish mostly from the 2003 hatch, with contributions from the 2001 and 2005 hatches, as well as some fish from the 1999 and 2007 hatches. Walleye from the 2003 hatch will be 18 to 26 inches long, while fish from the earlier hatches will range from 23 to 28 inches over the course of the fishing season. Fish from the 2005 hatch should be in the 17 to 20 inch range. Large walleye from strong hatches in the 1980s and mid-1990s still persist in the population, providing “Fish Ohio” trophy (more than 28 inches) opportunities. “Walleye abundance and the sport catch have been declining over recent years in Lake Erie due to below-average hatches since 2003,” said Knight. “However, the average size of fish caught in the 2009 fishery should be exceptional.” Anglers will also catch walleyes from the moderate 2007 hatch; however, most of these fish will be under the legal size of 15 inches until fall. The daily bag limit remains four fish per person during March and April 2009, and six fish from May 2009 through February 2010. A 15-inch minimum size limit is in effect during the entire season. Yellow Perch - Perch anglers should encounter fish ranging from 7 to 13 inches from the 2007, 2005 and 2003 hatches in this year’s fishery. Perch numbers should be similar to levels observed in 2008 in the Western Basin, but down slightly in the Central Basin. A moderate hatch from 2008 should boost the fishery beginning late next year. “Overall, we expect to have good perch fishing in 2009, with the largest fish coming from the Central Basin,” said Knight.

Smallmouth Bass - Smallmouth bass fishing in 2009 is expected to be fair.
