BY CAROL BENNER, PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR OTTAWA SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT The Ottawa County Agricultural Agencies hosted an Ag Breakfast for producers and businesses on “National Ag Day”, March 20th. OSU Extension Ottawa County, Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Farm Service Agency (FSA) staff prepared and served the meal for the 165 attendees. The event “kicked off ” with Kevin Fox auctioning off a dozen eggs – to be the first eaten. Money raised through this event goes to various scholarships which the SWCD provides to high school students. After breakfast, Dr. Bobby Moser of The Ohio State University, shared an update of where agriculture is headed in

Real Estate Activity Picking Up Locally BY JOHN SCHAFFNER Despite horrible economic numbers, both locally and across the country, local bankers and real estate agents are reporting sharply increased activity levels in recent weeks. Then, last Friday, the Federal Reserve announced an increased level of cash into the mortgage loan system and another reduction of interest rates designed to stimulate home sales. “Ohio home sales activity continued to slide in February,” according to a report from the Ohio Association of Realtors, as anxious buyers appeared to be remaining on the sideline due to the economic downturn. The Firelands Association of Realtors sales statistics for January and February

show a 20% decrease in the number of units sold and average price in the area, along with a 36.5% reduction in dollar volume during the period. However, the action of the Federal Reserve Bank of last Friday, along with the stimulus dollars taking hold, and suddenly local realtors, bankers and real estate appraisers are seeing a marked increase in activity. “The phones are ringing,” says Cindy Bolte, president of Bolte Real Estate and Insurance in Port Clinton. Several of the area’s top realtors have also reported increased levels of activity in recent days. The Port Clinton/Catawba Island/ Marblehead real estate market has long been a bellwether of future trends, as resort properties tend to begin selling in advance of the over-

all market. Even developers of such properties as Catawba Bay, Fairway Villas and Bay Point Resort report increased activity. Another factor is that a significant portion of the eastern Ottawa County population is retired and living on pensions. The “baby boomers” account for a large percentage of both the current homeowners and property owners. The U.S. Census from 2000 points out the fact that Ottawa County stands out not only in senior population but in other important demographic criteria as well. So, while the news on the national TV networks may not be so great, the most current trends in the local real estate market may be pointing to an early recovery here.

Outdoor Digital Sign for Oak Harbor High School In just a few months, residents will quickly notice a new eye-catching digital sign on the front lawn of the Oak Harbor High School. The National Bank of Oak Harbor is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year. In honor of this event, the bank is donating $20,000 to the Benton-Carroll-Salem Local schools to assist in the purchase of a new state-of-theart outdoor digital sign. The main source of funding for the purchase of the sign is a collaborative effort between the bank and the members of the Oak Harbor Athletic Boosters, who have also agreed to match the bank’s donation of $20,000. In return for their contributions, these two organizations will have their names placed on the sign. To round out the additional funds needed to make this project a reality, contributions of $2,000 each were made by the Oak Harbor Music Boosters and the Oak Harbor High School Student Council. Mulligan replaces outgoing Chair Jodi Regal who also currently serves as Ottawa County’s Auditor. Outgoing Chair Regal and Incoming Chair Mulligan have served as officers of the Central Committee since 2006. Regal cited a recent increase in family responsibilities as her reason for giving up the post. Susan Mulligan explained that her new responsibilities will be challenging because, “Jodi’s shoes are going to be difficult to fill.” But she added, “I am looking forward to building

Outdoor Digital Sign for Oak Harbor High School Continued from page 1 “The decision to purchase a new sign was the direct-result of us no longer being able to find replacement parts for our current sign. The existing sign was installed in the early 1980s and has served us well,” stated Keith Thorbahn, Oak Harbor High School Principal. “So, when the bank approached us with the idea of donating funds to purchase a new digital sign, their timing could not have been more perfect. We were then equally fortunate to be able to secure matching funds from the athletic booster organization.” The full color high definition sign is fully programmable, and additional features include high resolution animated graphics, built-in time and temperature, the ability to schedule messages up to one year in advance, and adjustable power supplies which will extend the life of the sign. “In celebration of our 75th anniversary, we knew we wanted to do something special for our community,” stated Gary P. Macko, President and CEO of The National Bank of Oak Harbor, “and this sign project seemed like the perfect opportunity to not only give something back to our schools, but

The Beacon I

Thursday, March 26, 2009

BeaconBits Sue and Horst Herzog of Catawba Island had a great treat recently when their grandson Alan Mulcahy, a high school student from Chugiak, Alaska, was here in the Port Clinton area for a few days. Alan is the son of Debbie Herzog Mulcahy (a Port Clinton High School graduate), and he was a member of a four-person shooting team that had won the Alaskan high school championship competition. They then came to Camp Perry to perform in the national competition. By the way, the town of Chugiak is about a thirty-minute drive north of Anchorage. Alan is in the Junior Navy ROTC program at his high school and is a member of the Precision Shooting Team there. He and the other team members arrived in Port Clinton at about 2 a.m. on Thursday, February 26 and left just three days later. Late on Thursday they had a practice session, and then Sue and Horst took the team to the Jolly Roger restaurant in Port Clinton where they all got to taste Lake Erie perch. Most of the boys had never tasted that delicacy before. There were more than 100 shooters from all across the nation at the competition at Camp Perry. The competitive shootings were on Friday and Saturday. The Alaskan team came in fifth among 14 teams competing, and one of their members was the top winner in the overall scoring. On Saturday night when the competition was all finished, the boys went to Herzog’s house for pizza and games and relaxation. Next day they left at about 11 a.m. for Detroit to take the flight back to their home. Proud grandma Sue said that their shirts had “Borealis Bulls Eyes” written on the back – so of course she took some pictures of that and also many other photos of the group. ~~~~~ Around noon on St. Patrick’ Day (a sunnier, warmer day than we had formerly been experiencing) some brave folks were having an outdoor meal at a picnic table in the park along the lakefront. They appeared to be wearing coats – but my guess is that, in spite of a bit of a nip in the air, they were having a mighty good time. I’m looking forward to being out of doors as soon as we get some really spring-like weather. It’s time after the long and intense winter we have had. And that reminds me it is time to think about spring house cleaning. (You will note that I said “think about” it, not that I’m actually gearing up to do it). Years ago, when I didn’t work at a full time job, there would come a day in the spring when it was obvious that the season had turned from winter to summer. I’d open doors and windows, a spring breeze would waft through the house, and suddenly everything inside the house looked dirty, and I’d know it was time to do the spring housecleaning. I’d tear into it, work every day ceaselessly, and then (about a week later) the house would be totally clean. Windows and walls would be scrubbed and polished. Curtains would not only be clean but starched, ironed and re-hung. Bed spreads and bed skirts would be fluffy. Every drawer and cupboard in the house would be as close to being organized and spotless as it was ever going to be. That was back then. Nowadays life is more complex so I tackle these jobs in a more organized manner. Also, I do shorter, simpler, less time-consuming tasks when I have a few minutes to spare. Little by little, I finish as much spring cleaning as I’m going to get done for the year – and that is usually not all of it! Below are a few things you can do when you have just a few minutes. I usually do these after I start fixing dinner and waiting for the meal to finish cooking. And remember, you need to have a box handy in which you will put everything you’re going to get rid of. (And you’ll find plenty!) -Clean one drawer (in any room). -Clean one shelf of any cupboard or cabinet (in any room). -Take down the kitchen curtains and toss them in the laundry. (You don’t have to do the laundry right then. The cur-

tains can be down for a few days or even longer). -Take down washable curtains in other places, one room at a time, launder them and re-hang. -Wash one window at a time inside BY VIRGINIA PARK while the curtains are down. -Scrub kitchen countertops. -Clean out a shelf in the refrigerator. -Wipe down the woodwork around a couple of doors. -Pick up scatter rugs in one room; shake them; put them in the laundry. -Clean a medicine cabinet (and pitch outdated stuff). -Wipe off all small appliances. -Clean exterior of refrigerator or stove. -Clean mirrors. -One shelf at a time, reorganize linen closet. -One shelf at a time, clean the bookcases. -Clean window blinds, one at a time. -Clean garage – one space at a time. -Clean one tub or shower. -Wipe computer and television screens. -Sweep porch or deck. -Wash a group of figurines. -Clean or dust a “collection” of items. -Clean ashes out of fireplace and make it look like summertime (maybe with a big basket of faux flowers in the fire box). -Swish feather duster around the top of all pictures and wall hangings. Note: This is a great time to get rid of shoes and winter clothes you didn’t wear. Bag them up for a garage sale, rummage sale or charity store. ~~~~~ I hear that the boats are going to start running to the islands again soon. The boat from Marblehead to Kelleys Island may begin trips this week. If so, I possibly have taken my last airplane flight to Kelleys Island on Sunday for this season. It was a good flight this past Sunday. I go over there to lead worship services and on the way I see something new every time I make the eight-minute flight over or back. This last one afforded an especially good view of the quarries on the Danbury Peninsula and the animals at African Safari. One thing I saw for sure from the air for the first time in a long time – there was no ice anywhere on the lake. Maybe spring has sprung at last. ~~~~~ It has been 125 years since Lillian Turner became the first graduate of Port Clinton High School and the first alumnus. Graduates of Port Clinton High are planning an alumni gathering and 125th Quasquicentenniel Celebration for September 25 and 26, 2009. Activities for the two-day celebration include an Alumni Band, and recognition of Alumni including a special invitation to all past DECA Alumni during the Port Clinton Redskins vs. Edison football game at True Lay Stadium on Friday. An Alumni Brunch will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon (tentative) at the Port Clinton Yacht Club (advance ticket purchase will be required). The All-School Reunion will be held at Kokomo Bay, 40 Madison Street, with social time from 6-8 p.m. Past and present teachers are invited to join in the “Teacher Corner”. At 8 p.m. the party will move to the streets of downtown Port Clinton to the Harvest Festival tents in front of The New Island House where friends can continue to reminisce and enjoy the live band, local food vendors and much more. Tell your friends and classmates to mark their calendars for the First Port Clinton All-School Reunion and 125th Celebration! For more information or to volunteer your assistance, contact Jan Gluth at jgluth@pccsd.net or call 419-732-2102.

“Bowl for Kids” This Weekend Mark your calendar for Sunday, March 29. Grizzly from 104.7 WIOT and Professional Wrestler “Punisher” will be at the “Bowl For Kids’ Sake” event scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Harbor Lanes in Port Clinton. It’s not too late to get your family and friends together for two hours of bowling, fun, free food, raffle prizes, a free t-shirt and other prizes donated by local businesses. Each adult bowler is asked to raise a minimum of $25 and students $20. Walk-in bowlers/teams are welcome. The more money you raise in pledges, the more chances

you will have to win prizes. For instance, for every $100 raised per bowler your name will be entered in an agency wide drawing for a Carnival Cruise to the Bahamas. Another way to win a cruise is – Every person who builds more than five teams will be entered in a raffle for a cruise. A “SPECIAL” drawing will be held after the start of the 2nd wave at 3 p.m. for Ottawa County bowlers. This prize is a “Suite Basket” donated by Baymont Inn and Suites. Join the Bowling Party and register today. If you have any questions, call Melva at 419-354-2113 or e-mail bbbs2@wcnet.org. All proceeds benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Ohio – Ottawa County. Help “Make a Difference In A Child”!

TheGARDEN AT THE LIGHTHOUSE — RESTAURANT & CATERING — The Garden J. & BRENDA BOU-SLIMAN, PROPRIETORS

The Ida Rupp Public library in Port Clinton, has joined film critic and filmmaker Thomas Brown to offer a series of weekend movie marathons on specific Fridays and Saturdays and will feature cult drive-in type films in various categories, including science-fiction, horror, suspense, comedy and documentaries on the paranormal. The movies will be shown in the community room of the library. On March 28 the suspense thriller marathon begins with “I Saw What You Did” at 1 p.m., “The Window” at 2:30 p.m., “Midnight Lace” at 4 p.m., “Race With The Devil” at 6 p.m. and “Wait Until Dark” at 8 p.m. Host Thomas Brown is no stranger to the world of cult and drive-in type films. An avid collector of films for three decades, a published critic, a prominent zombie in George A. Romero’s “Day of the Dead” and the writer-director co-editor of one of the only authorized documentaries to commemorate the 25th anniversary of “Night of the Living Dead,” Brown has made it a goal to entertain local folks with all kinds of fun and rare movies; “the kind of movies that you just can’t walk into Blockbuster or any place like them, and find on the shelf,” said Brown. “This is going to be like an indoor drive-in. People can bring their own refreshments, snacks and food, sit on the floor or in chairs and just pig-out and enjoy an entire day and evening of cool movies, shorts and trailers,” Brown explains. “The only thing missing is the pole speakers and fog. This will be free to the public, and patrons can thank Friends Film Arts Series coordinator Peggy Debien and library director Jim Crawford for being open to such a unique concept.” Although there is no cost to attend, patrons are welcome to make donations to the library’s film collection. The indoor drive-in movie marathons will officially begin on a regular basis in May, but there will be programs scattered throughout March and April. Check the library events section of the website www.idarupp.org for upcoming schedules.

Seaman Completes Basic Training Navy Seaman Apprentice Shannon L. Ramey, son of Cynthia S. and Glenn D. Ramey of Port Clinton, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Ramey completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations”. This

exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ‘’Navy’’ flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Ramey is a 2003 graduate of Port Clinton High School of Port Clinton, Ohio.

playing in the background, he used different colored chalks to design a landscape from a white void. “That was absolutely amazing,” said Doris Rounds, an Edgewood resident. “He has God given talent!”

Internet Use Among Seniors Up, But Shouldn’t Replace Human Contact BY CEINWEN PRICE HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE PORT CLINTON QuestionAs a 75-year-old widow I’ve noticed that more of my friends are sending e-mails. Is this a trend or just my imagination? Working on the internet is interesting, but some of my friends don’t like to get out much anymore. What can I do to have a more active social life? You are indeed part of the latest internet trend. While just over one-fourth (26 percent) of 70-75 year olds were online in 2005, 45 percent of that age group is currently online, representing the fastest growing group of internet users. A new report from the Pew Internet & American Life Proj-

ect says your age group has increased internet use more than any other since 2005. The web continues to be populated largely by younger generations, as more than half of the adult internet population is between 18 and 44 years old. But larger percentages of older generations are online now than in the past and they are doing more activities online, according to the analysis based on surveys taken from 2006-2008. Instant messaging, social networking and blogging have gained ground as communications tools, according to Pew, but e-mail remains the most popular online activity, particularly among older internet users. Fully 74 percent of internet users age 64 and older send and receive e-mail. At the same time, e-mail has lost some ground among teens; whereas 89 percent of teens said they used e-mail in 2004, just 73 percent currently say they do.

E-mail is great for staying in touch with friends and family, but shouldn’t replace human contact. Why not e-mail a friend about getting together for lunch or coffee? If no one is game, consider hiring a caregiver companion. Home Instead Senior Care, for instance, hires CAREGivers to go into the homes of older adults oftentimes for that human contact that is so vital to all ages. CAREGivers – many of them seniors themselves – can participate in favorite hobbies or accompany their clients to concerts or shows. Striking a balance between online socializing and the real thing is always the best way to go. For more information about Home Instead Senior Care, contact Ceinwen Price Full at 419-734-5050 or visit www. homeinstead.com. Seniors Usher in St. Paddy’s Day Seniors from across Ottawa County donned their favorite game and snack and joined their fellow seniors on Sunday at Riverview Healthcare’s Multipurpose Room for the 2nd Annual Senior “Pot O’ Gold Game Day and Potluck”. Whether they enjoy pinochle, dominoes, Rack-o or the Dice game, they were sure to have a ‘lucky day’ as seniors had an opportunity to try it all! A game of Bingo also gave the seniors the opportunity to win prizes donated by the Ottawa County Senior Centers and Guiding Hands Home Care Services. Seniors also filled the food table with goodies galore, with such game-day snacks as veggie pizza, Bugles, cheese ball and crackers, double chocolate brownies and deviled eggs. The seniors

Finch’s “How to Succeed” book takes him from the mailroom of Mr. Twimble (Mike Rayburn) to attract the attention of company pres-

ident J.B. Biggley (Bryan Winters) and CEO Wally Womper (Ryan McPherson). Along the way, Finch must escape the clutches of Biggley’s nephew, Bud Frump, (Dereck Witt). and signed by Charlie. The first three prints will be auctioned at the Reverse Raffle. The rest of the prints will be sold at the price of $25. All the proceeds will benefit the K-9 Unit. Charlie has posted the print on his website which is called, “Custom Drawings By Charlie” www.customdrawingsbycharlie. com. Business Financial Focus Upgrade Your Portfolio in 2009 It’s no secret that 2008 was rough on most investors. And 2009 didn’t get off GARY COON, to a particularly good start, either. Yet EDWARD JONES there’s still plenty of time left this year INVESTMENTS to upgrade your investment portfolio in a way that can help you stay on track toward your long-term goals. But what exactly does it mean to “upgrade your portfolio? Do you have to systematically go through your investments and eliminate all those that performed poorly last year? Or should you just sell of any investments that you think are risky? Neither one of these ideas are good solutions. In the first place, a severe bear market such as we’ve experienced tends to drag everything down, even quality investments. Furthermore, you can’t get rid of all investments that carry some risk — because all investments carry some risk. So, instead of taking either of these two drastic approaches, consider the following moves: * Review your portfolio objectives. Your investment objectives are based in large part on your risk tolerance and your stage of life. If these factors have changed, you may need to rebalance your portfolio. In fact, it’s a good idea to rebalance your holdings at least once a year, no matter what’s going on in the markets or in your life. * Increase your portfolio’s quality. Right now, you can find many quality investments that are very attractively priced. In past market recoveries, these types of investments usually have recovered faster than lower-quality ones. And because the biggest gains usually occur early in market rallies, you don’t want to wait too long to explore these opportunities. * Don’t overload on a single investment. In general, it’s not a good idea to have a single stock take up more than five percent of your portfolio. In recent months, many investors have learned the hard way about the dangers of holding too much stock in a single company — even one that once appeared to be a “blue chip firm. And the same principle applies to your employer’s stock — if it’s offered as an option in your 401(k), don’t go overboard on it. * Own a sufficient number of stocks. How many stocks should own to diversify the equity portion of your portfolio? There’s no one right answer for everyone, but to really attain proper diversification, you may need to own at least 20 or 25 stocks, spread out among all the major industry sectors. Of course, diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against a loss, but it can give you more chances for success while helping reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio. * Invest in a range of fixed-income securities. Just as you need to own a reasonable amount of stocks, you should also own a number of fixed-income vehicles — perhaps 10 to 20, depending on your situation. You can diversify these holdings by purchasing different types of bonds — corporate, municipal and Treasury — and certificates of deposit. To further diversify, buy fixed-income vehicles with varying maturities. You can’t control the economy or the financial markets. But by following the proven techniques described above, you can help control your own financial destiny. Take action soon. This article was provided by Edward Jones.
