TELLTALES Riverview Industries BY JOHN SCHAFFNER

On our tour of Friday Lenten venues, we worked at PCYC last Friday for the Junior Sailing Spaghetti Dinner with John Stefano doing the honors on the sauce, both meatless and with. It was delicious, and the Junior Sailors earned over $1,000. ––––––– We had 147 entries in our Find Wylie contest this week. Our winner is Neil Wilson of Oak Harbor who found the fickle fish in the Toft’s Ice Cream ad on page 2A. Our “Win it on the Web” Contest winner this week is Jennifer Walters of Port Clinton chosen from 120 entries. Both win a $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. We’ll be hiding Wylie again this week and when you find him, fill out the Find Wylie Ad and drop it at our office (Beacon Place Shopping Center, next to Goodwill) or … click on Wylie on our website homepage, www.thebeacon.net or … click on the “Win it on the Web” icon. You could be our next winner. –––––––– Last week, we mourned the death of Catawba development icon, Maury Somers. This week, we mourn the passing of a Port Clinton icon, David Wiseman, who most recently was living at Riverview. David is the son of former State Representative and City Councilman Earl Wiseman. He was a big local sports fan and was always happy to talk sports with you anytime, anywhere! Even though he was developmentally impaired, he was a terrific ambassador for Port Clinton. –––––––– We almost missed Walt Bahnsen’s 60th birthday! The Chief Probation Officer for Ottawa County Common Pleas Court turned 60 on March 3. –––––––– The 3rd Annual Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser and Open House for Riverview Industries is this Tuesday, March 24 from 5-7 p.m. –––––––– The Public Open House for the Oliver H. Perry Masonic Lodge No. 341 will be this Saturday, March 21 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Remember when a handshake was a binding contract? To a Freemason it still is! This will be the official “coming out party” for their new Lodge facility at 118 Monroe Street in Port Clinton, formerly the PC American Legion. –––––––– The Port Clinton Cheerleaders will be holding a special fundraiser for Patty Melchor Albertson, the mother of PCHS sophomore Alexis Zilles, who has been diagnosed with Leukemia. The girls will be holding a Spaghetti Dinner at Second Street Diner on Sunday, March 29 starting at Noon. Patty is at University Hospital in Cleveland (Room 6017). –––––––– The 6-7-8-OH Band is playing for a special fundraiser for the Black Swamp Bird Observatory at Mango Mama’s this Friday night. The band’s lead singer, Kim Kaufman, is the Executive Director for BSBO. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at OurGuest Inn & Suites, Great Lakes Popcorn, Second Street Diner and at the Observatory located at the entrance to Magee Marsh. –––––––– The 4th Thursday Ottawa County Republican Lunch Bunch will be March 26 at the Port Clinton Elks Lodge at Noon. Jack Boyle, State Director for “Americans for Prosperity”, a group that advocates for public policies that champion the principals of entrepreneurship and fiscal restraint, will be the speaker. No reservations are necessary. –––––––– The PC Elks will host a Texas No Holdem’ Poker Tournament to benefit the 4th of July Celebration this Sunday, March 22. Registration is set for 1 p.m. with first deal at 2 p.m. A $50 buy-in is requested to participate with no re-buys. Advance registration is available by calling Debbie Hymore-Tester at 419-732-3012 or Mike Snider at 419-734-0515. –––––––– The Community Ag Breakfast will be held Friday, March 20 at 8 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 122 Ottawa Street in Oak Harbor. The cost is only $5, and Dr. Bobby Moser will be the featured speaker. For tickets, call the Ottawa SWCD 8981595. –––––––– I was a bit dismayed to learn that the April edition of the Catholic Chronicle, a publication for which I served as a trustee for nearly 20 years, will not be putting out their May 2009 edition. Another sign of the times, I’m, afraid. Seattle, WA is without a newspaper this week as the Post Intelligencer closed its print operations on Tuesday.

Leadership Ottawa County Plans Class Project

"Take Back the Night" Leadership Ottawa County (LOC) Class of 2009 announced that it will host “Take Back the Night”, a march and rally designed to raise awareness about domestic and family violence on Friday, May 1, beginning at 7 p.m. at Waterworks Park in downtown Port Clinton. Participation in “Take Back the Night” welcomes survivors of domestic and family violence, their supporters and families. “This year’s class chose “Take Back the Night” because members learned that the most violent place in America is in the family home,” said Emily Dunfee. “Each year, the

incoming LOC class chooses a project that furthers and supports important causes. “Take Back the Night” will provide Ottawa County residents an opportunity to learn more about how pervasive violence is in our world – and our children’s world – to raise awareness and funds which will provide alternatives to personal and family violence.” A rally with several speakers, safe counselors and information about domestic and family violence will begin promptly at 7 p.m. in Waterworks Park. A march, following a path through downtown Port Clinton, to the Courthouse and back will begin immediately after the rally. For more information or to get involved, contact Corrine, Leadership Ottawa County, at (419)734-3266 ext. 125. Also, “The Clothesline Project” will be presented at Waterworks Park in conjunction with “Take Back the Night.” T-shirts which graphically depict and educate the public about the effects of violence designed by survivors and their supporters will be on display. For more information on the Clothesline Project - or to add a shirt to the growing display – call Carolyn at the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office (419)734-6845 or bring a shirt to add the evening of “Take Back the Night”.

Dear Editor, The members of PC PRIDE (Port Clinton People for Rebuilding our Infrastructure and Developing our Economy) would like to submit the following letter to the editor: On November 6, 2007, the citizens of this community spoke in a loud and clear voice. A resounding 61% of Port Clinton voters supported private development at Waterworks Park. By wide margins, these same voters elected local candidates who campaigned in favor of a year-round resort hotel and conference center and rejected local candidates who campaigned for more condominiums and retail stores. The conditions that inspired this mandate for action have not changed. Our streets are still crumbling. More local businesses have announced layoffs or closed completely, causing Ottawa County’s unemployment rate to rise to an astounding 17%, the second highest in the state. Nationally, the competition for available investment dollars has increased. These challenges should motivate us to redouble our efforts to inform resort developers of the many advantages of constructing a resort in Port Clinton. Instead, recent announcements show that the public mandate for a year-round resort and conference center is being ignored in favor of an all-too-familiar pattern: recycling ideas that no longer meet the community’s needs, succumbing to the desires of the vocal minority, hoping for public grants

for which we have no local match, and paying consultants for their opinions. The latest of these outside opinions include extending Adams Street to the lake, placing a restaurant on the property, and delaying until the economy improves. Segmenting the property eliminates its value to a major year-round employer and this community has waited for the economy to improve for almost 20 years, without success. We’ve had the public debate. The only opinion that matters on this topic now is the overwhelming majority opinion expressed at the polls. We cannot afford to wait. Port Clinton’s residents have provided a clear direction, and it is the responsibility of our elected officials to proceed with a serious, focused, transparent, and clearly articulated plan to identify and partner with a developer to build a year-round resort hotel and conference center. Signed, 29 members of the now re-energized Port Clinton People for Rebuilding our Infrastructure and Developing our Economy If you should have any questions, please contact me, Gerald Kallenbach, at 419-734-6082. Thank you!

Oberammergau

Oberammergau sits in the heart of the Bavarian Alps in Germany. This charming village is most famous for The Passion Play, which takes place every 10 years and dates back to 1634. This is the reenactment of the life and death of Christ, put on by 2,000 actors, singers, instrumentalists and technicians, all residents of the village. The Oberammergau Passion Play was a vow made by inhabitants of the village, that if God spared hem from the bubonic plague, they would perform a passion play every 10 years ending in zero. As promised, The Passion Play will be put on in 2010! AAA Northwest Ohio wants you to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience!

The Beacon I

Lots of people have seen robins already, but the first time I saw one was on Thursday, March 12. It was a nice fat one in my front yard. •••••• Then I saw some other birds this past week that were a really exciting addition to Bay Township! The first time I spotted them I thought they were snow geese. They were feeding in a field off Fremont Road near the eastern end of Darr-Hopfinger Road. •••••• Then Milt Long told me he had heard there was a big flock of swans around so I took my bird identification book and went to take a better look. I’m not very good at identifying birds, but I believe these may have been whistling swans. We stopped the car and listened and watched, and it was a truly beautiful sound and a beautiful sight. At that time there were about 45 swans, some in the air and some on the ground. While flying, they look huge and their long necks stick out in a way that is really amazing. I hope you get the chance to see them. I have not seen them since Saturday. •••••• About 35 women participated in a Lenten retreat at Immaculate Conception Church last Friday. Their theme was the study of female saints in both the Old and New Testaments: “Our Role Models in Lent”. This event was sponsored by the members of the Rosary Alter Society but all Catholic women were invited. I felt privileged to join with them, and it was a wonderful study for this time in the church year. The women there made me very welcome. Although I could not stay the entire time, I did hear brief sketches of many Biblical women and heard highlights of their lives. The leader focused on the women’s most important contributions to the Judeo-Christian faith and tradition. •••••• It seems as if there is lots going on in the Great Lake Erie Vacationland area as it becomes apparent that spring is right around the corner. Ken Kostal wrote to inform readers of this column that the 14th Annual Buckeye Regional Chili Cook-Off is coming up. This event will be held at the Catawba Flea Market next to the Baumann Auto Center on State Route North 53. The address is actually 535 SE Catawba Road. Dates are Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26. •••••• Forty cooks from across the nation will compete in traditional classes. Red chili, chili verde (this is GREEN chili) and salsa will be featured. Six past world champions are expected to participate, and 15 “Master Cooks” – those who have cooked at the World Championship Chili Cook-Off at least ten times - will be on hand. Last year Laura Ray of Livonia, Michigan won in this local contest for Chili Verde and went on to win the World Championship. Proceeds from this event will go to the Salvation Army of Ottawa County for the “Tools for School” program. •••••• The Ida Rupp Library has a copy of the book, “The art of Nutcraft”, by Charles F. Billat, and it is circulated to book borrowers. If you want to read about the artistic work of this shy local fellow who made quite a name for himself in carving and painting, take a look at Mr. Billat’s book. And if anyone knows where any of his paintings are located, I’d like to know how to see them. •••••• Mary Ann Market of Put-in-Bay sent a letter outlining activities of the island’s Perry Group for the warm weather months. Among these will be two visits of the U.S.S. Brig Niagara this year. Look for information about this for June 26-29 and August 22-24 (Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s birthday celebration). And, new this year, I believe, there will be concerts on alternate Wednesday nights sponsored by the Put-in-Bay Arts Council. •••••• Here are other Perry Group dates to note among island activities: April 25: Earth Day May 16: Queen Victoria Day, Peace Garden May 23: Memorial Day and Salute to the Troops June 27: Return of the Mayfly July 1: Canada Day July 5: A concert, “The Freedom Symphony”, featuring The Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra September 11-13: The always popular Historic Weekend will fea-

ture a host of activities; among them will be the traditional concert by the Toledo Symphony Orchestra performed at the base of Perry’s Monument. •••••• The Superintendent at the Monument BY VIRGINIA PARK is Blanca Stransky. She is busily seeking funds to repair the majestic column before 2013, the Bicentennial year of the Battle of Lake Erie. •••••• Joann Gunn contributed an article about emotional eating and weight loss to the Otterbein North Shore “Northern Lights” newsletter. It was excerpted from WEB-MD. I thought Joann did a great job of describing eating “triggers” – things that prompt us to eat when we are not hungry. These include: Social eating: this happens when we are with other people. We might be happy or be encouraged to eat by others; or perhaps we want to “fit in” with a group or recover from an argument. Some emotions stimulate eating. Have you ever eaten in response to boredom, stress, fatigue, depression, anger, loneliness or anxiety? Situational eating takes place just because the opportunity to eat arises. It could happen from being in a restaurant, seeing a food advertisement, passing a bakery, smelling a food aroma or repeating an activity where you had eaten before (such as attending a movie or a sporting event). Negative thoughts can spawn eating; worry over appearance or having low self-worth are a couple of troublesome thoughts. Physical clues can trigger eating. If you skip a meal you’ll be hungrier later. Or you may eat to help forget pain or to control it. •••••• A good way to eliminate bad eating habits is to distract yourself from eating by reading, jogging, talking to a friend, doing physical work or meditation. There are many other pleasurable activities. Find some that you like and do them. You’ll enjoy the activity. •••••• Remember, it is estimated that 75% of overeating is caused by emotions. Food is comforting so we tend to use it to control many negative emotions. I recognize most of these “triggers” personally. Spring is a good time to get those excessive eating behaviors under control. A final thought is this. Reward yourself each time you are successful or you attain an eating goal. Everyone likes a reward. It reinforces good and healthful behaviors! •••••• Saint Patrick’s Day may be over, but I’m going to stick with the “green theme” and share some ideas for what you can do for the environment. The following are a few ideas I found in an article entitled “Going Green” in the March 2009 issue of The Well Workplace health newsletter. •••••• Choose tap water instead of buying bottled water. If you like to take water with you when you’re on go, just invest in a reusable water bottle. Recycle everything that is accepted locally such as plastics, tires, batteries, paper, cardboard, etc. Start a compost pile. It’s really good for the garden and the environment, too. Plan your errands so that you can make efficient use of your time and vehicle fuel. Use cotton shopping bags and refillable containers whenever possible. As you purchase new electronics such as TVs, computers and cell phones, consider donating your old ones, or give them to an organization that collects old electronics and resells them. •••••• The article goes on to express that even one person can make a difference in our world. Positive actions spread. Recently I’ve noticed several people carrying their own reusable grocery bags to and from the grocery stores. Send me an email at ginny@nwonline.net to share other ideas for helping the environment. I look forward to hearing from you.

Schools Danbury Students Create Art for Keeper’s House The Danbury High School and Grade School Art Departments are collaborating with local artist Jodie McCallum and the Wolcott Keeper’s House to create a family friendly focal point for visitors to the home of the Marblehead Lighthouse’s first keeper, Benajah Wolcott. McCallum, widely known for her whimsical paintings and children’s books illustrations, designed a mural showing a pioneer boy and girl in an outdoor scene. It is being transferred to special panels which will be attached to the storage shed between the Keeper’s House and the museum/ annex at 9999 Bayshore Road, Marblehead. McCallum designed outlines and created a color pallet for the students to complete, working with high school art teacher Sande Measimer. McCallum also made outlines for a life sized photo mannequins of Benajah Wolcott and his wife, Ra-

Danbury’s grade school art classes will work with their teacher, Lea Mark, to complete this display. Johnson’s Island resident Dennis Kennedy cut out the panels and transferred the outlines. The project is underwritten by the Port Clinton Rotary Foundation, which has covered the costs of materials. The work is donated by Grant and Jodie McCallum and the Danbury Public School art students. The completed work will be dedicated on Lakeside Daisy Day, May 9, in a special celebration at the House. The Wolcott Keeper’s House is a project of the Ottawa County Historical Society.

St. Boniface Students Perform Mock Trial

St. Boniface School 4th and 5th graders experienced the judicial process first hand at the Ottawa County Courthouse by participating in the mock trial “Goldilocks vs. The Three Bears. Judge Kathleen Giesler presided over the proceedings while the students took on the roles of the Locks family, the Bear family, their attorneys, the bailiff, jury foreperson and members of the jury. Gold E. Locks (Allison Kuhn) was accused by The Three Bears of having bad manners. The Bears’ attorney (Veronica Fritsch) and the attorney for Gold E. Locks (Elizabeth Winters) made their opening statements to a packed courtroom. The prosecuting attorney called the Bear family to the stand and made the case that Gold. E. Locks had shown bad manners by entering the Bear’s home uninvited, eating their porridge, sleeping in their beds and, most grievous of all, breaking Babe E. Bear’s chair. The defense countered with testimony by Mrs. Locks (Annie Quisno) and Gold. E. Locks that the door to the Bear’s house was open, she had been invited for porridge on previous occasions and that Babe. E. Bear’s chair was already broken. Miss Locks also stated that she was waiting for the Bear family to

The students also visited the courtroom and office of Common Pleas Court Judge Bruce Winters and the sheriff ’s office and the jail. Returning to school, the students worked on essays about their experience. All enjoyed the visit with Judge Winters and most agreed that seeing the jail was scary, but fun. “I went to places I have never been, wrote Annie Quisno, “and I hope I won’t go to some of those places again. Allison Kuhn was particularly impressed with the 911 center. “I loved it! The fingerprint machine was awesome! Prosecuting Attorney for the Bear family, Veronica Fritsch, said her favorite part was the mock trial, though she was disappointed with the jury’s verdict. Entertainment “Don’t Hug Me” Opens Thursday BY MATTHEW PARKER Get ready for a rollicking good time folks, ‘cause here comes the folks from Bunyan Bay, Minnesota. There will be singing, dancing, drinking and laughs from the opening curtain to the final bow. This comedy musical is directed by Brenda BouSliman. Clara (played by Monette Garn) and Gunner Johnson (with Matt Parker) are proprietors of “The Bunyan”, a bar not unlike the favorite watering hole in your own neighborhood, only with a different (and maybe funnier) bunch of characters than the ones you’re used to. The play starts on the coldest day of the year (78 Below!). Gunner wants to move to Florida and wife Clara is content to stay and relive her youth every year in the Winter Snowplow Parade. The brutal weather has Gunner wanting out!

Clara, looking for a way to keep Gunner happy (mostly by making more money) enlists the help of a karaoke salesman (played by Rich Riedmaier) to bring in more business, and more romance, into their lives. A beautiful barmaid, (Jaclyn Kromer) and her jealous boyfriend (Jeff Bugbee) round out the cast, even though there’s an unseen but omnipresent Sven Yorgensen, hovering behind the backs of everyone’s lives. Do they move to Florida? What about the romance between the barmaid and the businessman boyfriend? Does the karaoke salesman throw a monkey wrench in the whole works? One way to find out: Come to Playmakers Civic Theatre on March 19-22, or the 26th through the 29th for fun, frolic, and kissing too. Rated PG-65. the space of only two years. Because the cancer was in seven out of twelve of her lymph nodes, Lauren remains in the third highest group for recurrence. Lauren’s objective with her new book, “Hearing His Whisper,” is to share what brought her back from the brink of death. Hers is a story of triumph and healing fueled by faith and love and a journey that ultimately leads to internal freedom, self-love, inner strength and acceptance. Her inspirational wisdom will encourage and equip women who silently face a similar situation. The book is now available at all major booksellers and online at www. LaurenEMiller.com.

In her first book, author Lauren Miller shares her real life experience with cancer and how it evolved her relationship with God. Lauren Miller is a survivor in every sense of the word. On January 10, 2006, two weeks prior to her final divorce court date, the mother of three children, second degree black belt, fitness trainer, inspirational speaker and teacher, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer: invasive ductal carcinoma grade three. She was given a 50 percent chance of survival because of her age and the advanced stage of her cancer. In her first book “Hearing His Whisper,” Lauren Miller shares her remarkable story of hope and perseverance in the midst of cancer and divorce. “I tell people it’s not about what you do in life, but about who you are in relation to God and others,” says Miller. “You can’t always help what happens in life when it comes to life and death, but you can choose how to respond to your circumstances.” According to WebMD’s breast cancer guide, less than five percent of women get breast cancer under age 40. Just 38 when she was diagnosed, by the time she was 40, Lauren had endured eleven surgeries, a double mastectomy, sixteen rounds of chemotherapy and six weeks of daily radiation in

WomenInBusiness Providing Employment Solutions is Part of Her Job Born and raised in Perrysburg, Rachel Wixey has been a part of the local Northwest Ohio community her whole life. Now, as Division President of The Renhill Group, a division of Renhill Staffing Services, she contributes to the local economy by heading a company that provides employment solutions for local businesses, schools and job seekers. Renhill Staffing Services is a locally owned and operated business that has been specializing in providing businesses and job seekers with short-term and long-term placement in a variety of industries since 1970. The University of Toledo alumnus began her career at Renhill in 1996 as a recruiter for clerical/office personnel positions. In 1999 Renhill took on its first school system as a client; the Lucas County Educational Service Center. More school systems soon followed which propelled the company to create an education division called The Renhill Group. The Renhill Group serves as a resource for school systems

throughout Ohio, specializing in recruitment, training and employment services for long-term and short-term Substitute Teachers, Paraprofessionals and substitute classified personnel. In 2004 Wixey was charged with the management of The Renhill Group and prioritized 100% of her time to the company’s education division. She was named Division President in 2007. Under her direction, The Renhill Group boasts a 100% education client retention rate, serves 40 schools systems with approximately 600 employees working in over 300 individual schools each day throughout Ohio. While the words ‘thorough,’ ‘dedicated,’ ‘tenacious’ and ‘compassionate’ have been used by her staff to describe her, the modest Wixey has another view of herself. “My very best attributes are my 8-year-old son Tanner, 4-year-old daughter Julia and my husband Bruce who I recently celebrated 10 years of marriage with,” she said.

Sports Drew Stone Nearly Pulls Off State Title BY MARK GRIFFIN A pair of one-point losses at last year’s district tournament prevented Oak Harbor’s Drew Stone from qualifying for the state tournament. Stone, a junior who qualified for state as a freshman, said those close losses at the district tournament “hurt.” “That,” he said, “was mostly all my motivation this year.” Prior to this season, Stone certified with the Ohio High School Athletic Association in the 112-pound weight class, but he ended up wrestling at 119 and nearly pulled off a state title. He was the 10th-ranked 112-pounder in the Brakeman Report. “I gained weight and weighed 138 before the season,” Stone said. “I got down to 112, and I was too weak to wrestle there, so I went to 119 and stayed there.” Stone won sectional and district titles this season and was joined at last week’s state tournament by Oak Harbor teammates Mike Mallernee, a junior, and sophomores Ian Miller and Konner Witt. Despite having just four wrestlers, the Rockets scored 46 points to take fifth place in Division II in Columbus. Stone finished second at 119 pounds, while Miller (45-3) took third at 135 and Mallernee (36-11) was eighth at 160. Witt (38-9) came up one match short of placing.

“I was ecstatic,” Oak Harbor coach George Bergman said. “We finished second last year and third the year before, and we had three individuals who all ended up earning scholarships at the Division I (college) level. To come back this year with no seniors starting and finish fifth in the state, that was beyond my expectations. I was hoping to finish in the top 10. “It shows what kind of kids we have in our program and what kind of competitors they are. The great thing is, we have them all back next year and we have higher goals for next year.” Stone, who finished 39-3 and is 103-22 for his career, will have another heartbreaking one-point loss to think about in the off season. Stone reached the state finals against topranked Johnni DiJulius of Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit. It proved to be a defensive struggle, one that Stone lost by a 1-0 decision. “DiJulius was a state runner-up as a freshman last year, so we knew it was going to be a tough match,” Bergman said. “Basically, the guy hung on (Stone’s) leg for two minutes. Usually you get a stall call there. That’s part of the sport. You want to try to keep the refs out of it. We were real impressed with how Drew wrestled all weekend. To be an eyelash away from winning the whole thing, we were real proud of him.”

Stone, who prides himself on being a strong third-period wrestler, trailed 1-0 entering the third period against DiJulius but couldn’t muster any offense. “I chose down, so I was down the whole period,” he said. “He went down to my ankle and held on for dear life. I couldn’t get him off my ankle. I went down to the mat and tried to get out that way. I should have stayed on my feet. He was being smart and didn’t let me to get out to win the match. I would have done the same thing.” Stone said his 9-7 semifinal win over second-ranked James Inghram from University School gave him confidence for the finals. “I figured I could wrestle with the best,” Stone said. “That’s when I figured I could beat DiJulius. I got taken down 20 seconds into the (semifinal) match, but he got tired and I kept pushing him. I took him down once in the second period and twice in the third period.” Stone said he plans to wrestle non-stop over the summer to prepare for next season. He’d like to finish his career with at least one state title, two fewer than his mentor and good friend, Cody Magrum. The three-time state champ from Oak Harbor is now wrestling at Ohio State. “When I came into high school he kind of took me under his wing and showed me the ropes,”said Stone, who also plays soccer for the Rockets.

“I went everywhere with him my freshman and sophomore year. He was basically my brother. I have a T-shirt that says ‘Magrum’s brother’ on the back. Everybody jokes about it. I always strive to be as good as him.”

Workshop for Contractors and Others Working Along Erie Shore Set The best management practices for controlling the natural processes of erosion, sedimentation and recession along Lake Erie’s coast and tributaries is the topic of a two-day workshop that includes site visits along Ohio’s shore. In partnership with the Ohio Coastal Training Program, Pennsylvania Sea Grant will facilitate the April 20-21 workshop targeted toward landscapers, realtors, environmental engineers, surveyors, municipal officials and other professionals in Ohio and Pennsylvania who work along the environmentally sensitive Lake Erie coast. “Waterfront property is very valuable. People want to protect their investment by hiring professionals who understand its special concerns,” said Marti Martz, Sea Grant coastal outreach specialist. “People working along Lake Erie or a tributary stream can have considerable impact on that area. Improper design, siting or construction of a project can result in increased bluff and stream bank erosion and sediment deposition. This compromises the integrity of the shore and adversely affects quality of the surrounding water.” Topics to be covered in the workshop being held at the at the Lodge and Conference Center at Geneva State Park in Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio, include coastal geology, hydrology and the ecological impact of shore erosion; public access issues; the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ permit process; similarities and differences between the permitting processes in Ohio and Pennsylvania; landscape solutions for erosionprone areas; habitat impacts of riparian projects and instream habitat and bank stabilization devices. Staff from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Office of Coastal Management, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Ohio Sea Grant College Program will discuss coastal design standards and recommendations, permitting processes and best management practices along Ohio’s portion of the Lake Erie shore and its tributary streams. The cost to attend the two-day workshop is $45. Continuing education credit is available through Pennsylvania State University for an additional fee of $35. For more information or to register for the workshop, contact Martz at (814) 2179015 or mam60@psu.edu. The Ohio Coastal Training Program is a NOAA funded partnership that provides science-based training for professionals whose decisions impact Lake Erie.

But some of the same principles that apply to your basic spring cleaning can work just as well when you tidy up your investments. Consider the following suggestions: • Take an inventory of your belongings. If you’re like most people, you’ve got some things lying around your house that have outlived their usefulness. It might be that lawn mower that died in 2004 or the toaster that warmed its last slice during the Affordable Housing Clinton Adminisin Port Clinton

tration, but whatever it is, it’s beyond repair — and it should go. And the same may be true of some of your investments. If one hasn’t performed the way you had hoped or no longer fits into your long-term goals, this might be a good time to speak with a financial advisor. • Dispose of your duplicates. If you went through your house carefully, you might be surprised at how many items you have that do the same thing. Do you really need two colanders? And how many radios can you listen to at one time? If you looked at your investment portfolio the same way, you might be surprised by some of the redundancies that pop up. For example, you may have several stocks issued by similar companies that make similar products. This might not be a concern when the stock market is booming, but it could be a definite problem if a downturn affects the industry to which these companies belong. Always look for ways to diversify your holdings. While diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against a loss, it may help reduce the effects of market volatility.

• Put things back in order. Over time, and almost before you’re aware of it, the spaces in your home can get “out of balance.” Perhaps you have too many chairs in one corner, or maybe your new desk takes up too much space in your home office. With some rearranging, however, you can get things back in order. The same need for rearrangement may apply to your portfolio, which might have become unbalanced, with too much of one investment and too little of another. This situation could undermine your financial strategy, especially if the imbalance means you are taking on too much risk or, conversely, if your holdings have become too conservative to provide the growth you need. So, look for ways to restore your portfolio to its proper balance. By giving your portfolio an annual spring cleaning, you can help make sure it’s up-to-date, suited to your needs and well-positioned to help you make progress toward your key financial goals. And you can do it all without going near a dust cloth. This article was provided by Edward Jones.
