TELLTALES Waterworks BY JOHN SCHAFFNER

Last Friday evening, Greg Peiffer, his wife Linda, my wife Mary Alice and I all made the short trip to Oak Harbor for the St. Boniface Fish Fry. It was worth the trip because, as is usually the case eating in Oak Harbor, the food was magnificent! I was a little leery of the cooks, however. There was Gary Quisno and Bill Hubans frying fish. And if that wasn’t scary enough, the head cook, dressed in a greasy T-shirt and ball cap, was our new Common Pleas Court Judge Bruce Winters. –––––––– We forgot to hide Wylie in our Find Wylie contest this week. So, we have no winner, but … Wylie will be hiding again this week, so when you find him, fill out the Find Wylie Ad and drop it at our office (Beacon Place Shopping Center, next to Goodwill). Or … click on Wylie on our website homepage, www.thebeacon.net. Our “Win it on the Web” Contest winner this week is Ken Benton from Erie Township, chosen from 75 entries, Ken just clicked his way to a $20 gas card from Friendship Food Stores. You could be our next winner, just log on to www.thebeacon.net and click on the “Win it on the Web” icon. –––––––– Before there was Catawba Bay…before there was LeMarin…before there was Fairway Villas…before there was Catawba Shores…before there was Harbor’s Edge…before even the CIC Condominiums, there was the Colony Club Condominiums. They were developed in the 1960s by Murray Somers, who passed away recently near his home in Stuart, Florida. Murray was a visionary and a pioneer in development of Catawba Island, not to mention he was a very nice man. He was 87. –––––––– Also passing from the scene is former Oak Harbor High School music director, John Freytag, who lived in Perrysburg. 1968 OHHS Alumni, David Grimm sent me the notification. He was Music Director from 1952 to 1967. Our Assistant Editor, Chris McBain-Berry told me that he taught her to play the clarinet. He was 90. –––––––– The final count on viewers of the most recent Now You Decide program on WPCR and The Beacon’s website was over 3,000! Amazing! They now have a new episode running, with Sheriff Bob Bratton and Captain Pat Chrysler of Put-in-Bay regarding ice fishing and ice safety. An ABC news crew will be in town this week to record an episode of 20/20, and host John Stossel granted a 20-minute interview to Ron Miller for his latest program. The ABC show is scheduled to air sometime in early April. –––––––– Ottawa County Municipal Court Magistrate, Lou Wargo, received a special award recently. He traveled with Jim Bergeman and Jim Widmer to the Niagara River on a steelhead fishing expedition and Judge Wargo didn’t catch anything! Therefore, he was presented with a stuffed “skunk” award! –––––––– The Oak Harbor Knights of Columbus Council will sponsor an “all you can eat” French Toast and Sausage Family Breakfast this Sunday, at St. Boniface Church beginning at 9 a.m. Donation is $5 for adults, $4.50 for senior citizens and $3 for youngsters under 12. –––––––– After you are stuffed with French Toast, relax for a few hours then head to the Charity Basketball Game to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation to find a cure for breast cancer. The game starts at 4 p.m. and features the Oak Harbor Coaching staff against the Senior AllStars and will be held at Oak Harbor High School. –––––––– It is Lent, a time to abstain from meat on Fridays in the Catholic faith. What a sacrifice! Now we have to eat delicious Lake Erie Perch and Walleye at the Fish Fry put on by the Port Clinton Knights of Columbus at Denny Bergeman Hall or whitefish at the St. Boniface Fish Fry in Oak Harbor. –––––––– Don't forget Tuesday, March 17th is St. Patrick's Day.

Project Still In Play

BY JOHN SCHAFFNER It has been nearly a year since the Puller Group of Indianapolis pulled their proposal for a Hotel/Waterpark Complex off the table. Some members of City Council have become curious as to what the Mayor and her administration has been doing since. They got their answer Tuesday night. “Since the Pullers pulled out of negotiations, we have met with several interested parties,” said Port Clinton Mayor Debbie Hymore-Tester. “Floyd-Browne, City Auditor Steve Benko and I came up with a list of developers and investors and sent out 100 letters of interest.” None were, thanks in large measure to the economy and the suddenly tight banking and mortgage markets. “I followed up every one with a personal response. Mr. Benko sent out 20-30 more e-mails to possible developers or investors.” The answer was always the same… nice project, bad timing. “Rob (Berner) and I talked with an LA firm, and I visited one of their sights in South Carolina.” Last November, the Mayor and her Safety Service Director, along with other elected officials met with John Alschuler, a principal in the New York City firm of HRA, who has developed similar projects in Cincinnati, Columbus and Baltimore. They received a formal response just three weeks ago. “It is the most important parcel in the community,” said Alschuler. “Most significantly for the long term, the Park is where downtown Port Clinton meets the waterfront.” Alschuler cited three objectives the City should pursue. • Generate meaningful tax rateables and provide employment for local residents • Catalyze continued improvement of the downtown business climate • Further transition Port Clinton’s economy away from seasonal traffic to year-round activity. Alschuler recommends that the City should modify its current site plan. He felt strongly that a development should connect the downtown to the waterfront. He also recommends a flexible site plan, conforming to the City’s established street system. Finally, Alschuler proposes a phasing plan, moving the project forward in incremental phases. “For instance, you may be able to start with the marina, THEN build towards more commercial development.” Alschuler cited a number of challenges, especially the current regional, national and global recession. “Credit for real estate development is extremely difficult to obtain,” said Alschuler, “making all but the most creditworthy projects, sponsored by the strongest developers, impossible to finance.” He stated that he doesn’t expect relief from the current economic condition until 2010, at the earliest. Alschuler suggests a series of strategies to break the overall project into “bite-size” pieces. The first has already begun, to seek funding for the marina from the State of Ohio, which Mayor Hymore-Tester did two weeks ago when she was in Columbus. Other recommendations include seeking funds for infrastructure improvements to the site; explore a reduced project scope in the initial phase; consider alternate uses, such as a restaurant; delay further solicitation until the prospects of financing improve; plus produce a revised site plan stressing the connection between the site and downtown, clear connectivity to the water and one that allows for a phasing of the site. “So, let me be perfectly clear,” Mayor Hymore-Tester told Council Tuesday night, “we are moving this project forward and have not been idle. We are committed to matching this project with the right and qualified partner. We remain cautious at this time, but we are still doing our due diligence on the property and its infrastructure. When we have a potential developer that presents their project that we feel is worthy, then, and only then, we will bring it to Council, and you will have the final vote.” Again, she cautioned Council that the city will not negotiate any project proposal in public. “Economic Development Projects of this scale are not done that way, as potential developers want to keep their anonymity.”

After testing and improving two 20,000 square foot structures at the Lake Erie Business Park, this new building is 300 feet wide, 450 feet long and 100 feet high over a lake.

Stimulus Dollars Available For First Time Homebuyers \BY JOHN SCHAFFNER Several local companies have begun to tout the federal tax credits available to consumers. As part of President Obama’s stimulus program, many first time home buyers have now become eligible to receive up to $8,000 of your money in the form of a tax credit when they purchase a home. Others who want to make home improvements that will save energy are now eligible for $1,500 in federal energy tax credits. The Manager of one of Ottawa County’s largest Real Estate firms, Howard Hanna, hopes that this will help her company move some houses in the market. Mary Ann Gecsi, manager of Howard Hanna’s Catawba office says “young folks should take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity.” The first-time buyer tax credit is available now through December 1, 2009. “Mortgage interest rates are very low, and the selection of homes in our area is very good right now,” says Mary Ann Gecsi who noted that her office right now is contracted with 288 listings. So, who is eligible? Persons must be first time home buyers who have not owned a home during the last three years. The buyer must also be purchasing a home for his/ her primary residence. How does it work? Every dollar of tax credit reduces income taxes by a dollar. Credits are claimed on an individual’s tax return. Is there an income restriction? Yes. The income restriction is based on the tax filing status the purchaser claims when filing his/her income tax return. An individual max income is $75,000, a couple is $150,000. Nearly every licensed realtor in Ottawa County will be extremely well-versed in all of the nuances of this law and its impact on local buyers. A law was passed just last year offering a $7,500 firsttime buyers tax credit, but called for the buyer to pay it back over 15 years. However, the new law eliminates this “pay back” provision. Current homeowners locally can also get in on some of the stimulus dollars. There is now a $1,500 Federal Energy Tax Credit available for folks who wish to make improvements to their home that can save energy. Items such as exterior windows, doors, roofing, insulation as well as energy saving heating and air conditioning units are eligible. Several local companies, including Grande Maison of Marblehead, Bayview Heating and Air Conditioning in Danbury Township and Ohler & Holzhauer in Port Clinton are among the local firms touting products that can save energy. Several, like Grande Maison, are also offering to match the $1,500 in federal dollars.

Dear Editor, The youth of Immaculate Conception who will be attending a youth conference this summer would like to personally and publicly thank the following people/businesses for helping them raise money to pay for the bus. All those who entered the 3rd Annual Soup & Chili Cook off with their special recipes or family favorites so that all may sample them, “We thank you”. To all those who came to “taste test” all those recipes, “We thank you”. To those businesses whom donated a gift certificate as winning prizes for “A Cook’s Night Out” and they are: The New Island House, Coffee Express (First year), Second Street Diner & Dianna’s (Two years in a row) and The Garden & McCarthy’s (All three years) – “We humbly thank you”. If it were not for the generosity of our community, we would not be able to charter a bus for this conference. We have attending 49 students and 7 adults. It would take at least 13 – 14 vehicles with either 4 – 5 people in a car, with each individual’s gear, to get us to Steubenville, some 3 ½ hours away, for our conference. With only 7 chaperones/ leaders, at least half of those 14 cars would return to Port Clinton only to come back 2 days later to pick us up. This is not only gas and money, but time invested. Also, we travel on the turnpike, so there would also be a financial cost per car. Per person the bus is the best way to travel and in this economic time, we need to use our monies wisely. Plus, the final bonus is these kids get to know each other a little more while traveling on the bus there and on the way home so many memories are shared, and friendships either begin or are bonded stronger. When an opportunity like this comes along, where we can support our children to get them to a healthy, safe

and spiritual environment, where they learn to trust in God and learn how to make good choices, you know that you are strengthening your community and doing God’s work in getting them there– and we truly do thank you! Carol Fox, Youth Director Immaculate Conception, Port Clinton Dear Editor, Far away in Key West, Florida I recently heard o the passing of Dr. Kraft Ritter. I can’t let such a passing go by without proper notice. After WW II in the fifties and sixties there were a group of doctors who answered their calling ion the Port Clinton area. In retrospect they were an amazing group. Most had served in the war. One marched at Bataan, one had even been conscripted into the German navy. They included Dr. Ritter, Minnick, Reeves, Wagner, Hughes, Felber, Loeffler, Akins and Coon. Most are gone. A couple now are in ill health themselves. But for years they delivered babies and saved lives. They drove the roads of Ottawa County with their doctor’s bags behind their seats taking care of the injured and the sick in circumstances that today’s legal system would prohibit. They made house calls and treated patients in exchange for corn and tomatoes. All because they loved this community and its people. And because they believed in their work. Their names may be forgotten to many. But there are lots of us who remember them and the care they gave. The new generation of doctors in their town has a huge legacy to carry forward. I know this because as a child I knew these men. One was my father. Their service and dedication remains for me, to this day, an inspiration and a challenge. Peter F. Wagner Key West, Florida

$1,256,700 for Middle Bass Island State Park State Representative Dennis Murray has announced the Ohio Department of Natural Resources release of $1,256,700 for the Water, Waste Water and Electrical Utilities project at Middle Bass Island State Park in Ottawa County. “This project is critical to the vitality of Middle Bass Island State Park and Ottawa County as a whole,” Rep. Murray said. “I’m extremely pleased that the state saw the importance of this project, and I am excited to see what the park will look like when it’s completed.” The project consists of the construction of utility system infrastructure to support current and projected future development within Middle Bass Island State Park, including the recently renovated marina basin. Major items of work include new water and sewer lines to connect the park to existing treatment facilities and a new elevated water tank (now under construction), an expanded electrical distribution system, proper abandoning of two existing groundwater wells that are no longer used, and miscellaneous minor site improvements.

Our 62nd Season Continues.... PRESENTS

Don’t Hug Me

Thursday, March 12, 2009

Now we are in the season of Lent. That is 40 days (not counting Sundays) between Ash Wednesday and Easter Eve. It is a period of preparation for celebrating the teachings of Jesus Christ, and it is sometimes observed with a period of fasting. Christians often forego some pleasure or food during Lent as a sacrifice to make themselves worthy of observing the Crucifixion on Good Friday (also called God’s Friday) and The Resurrection on Easter Sunday. This reminds me that I’m starting to see travel brochures advertising trips to Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany, in 2010, to see the Passion Play that is performed there every ten years. More than 2,000 actors, musicians, technicians and others make this 5-6 hour performance a “must-see” event for world travelers. Five hundred of these performers are children. Marti Zeitzheim of Oak Harbor was among those who saw the play in 2000. She sent along a children’s book that she had purchased there. The play starts with Jesus traveling to Jerusalem with his friends and followers as people greet him in triumph. He chases the money-changers and salesmen out of the temple and preaches there. He celebrates a “Last Supper” with his disciples (and that becomes the precursor of Holy Communion). Soon questions arise and the leaders of his religion grow increasingly worried about the popularity of Jesus. After a mockery of a trial, Jesus is condemned to die upon a cross. The Crucifixion scene takes place and Jesus is “buried” in a new grave. On the third day the tomb is empty. The Resurrection scene takes place; Jesus appears once more. The drama ends. The people of the village of Oberammergau have been performing this play every ten years since about 400 years ago in 1633. The “Black Death” plague was rampant and the villagers promised God they would present the story of Jesus if they were spared. The very next year they built a temporary stage of wooden planks upon which they performed. Now there is a theatre there that holds 4,000 people. Oberammergau has about 5,000 residents and 2,000 of them take part in the production. Only natives or people who have lived there at least 20 years are allowed to participate. There are no restrictions on age or religious preferences. There are 100 six-hour performances. The primary characters are played by two actors who perform on alternate days. I have always wondered if this performance is in German. If not, in what language is it performed? Does anybody know? If you’re interested in going to Oberammergau next summer, plan it now and make your travel reservations. Book-

Dig out some article of green clothing and wear it with pride that day. Here are a couple of famous Irishmen to focus on: Turlough O’Carolan wrote the tune for our “Star Spangled Banner”. He was a blind harpist, and he actually died about 35 years before the American Revolution. James Hoban, born in Kilkenny, Ireland, designed the White House in Washington D.C. He won a competition for the design. And here are a couple of other items, also culled from “Northern Lights”: Aran Island’s Irish sweaters have a unique pattern of knitted weave for each island family of fishermen. And Trinity College in Dublin is Ireland’s oldest University and boasts many famous alumni. The city of Dublin was founded by Vikings in 988 A.D. ~~~~~ Here is some more news about Charles Billat who made tiny carvings out of nuts and other very small items. This fellow was fairly well-known around the Catawba Island – Port Clinton area. Bill and Sis Bush now own the cottage where Billat lived. Their year-round home is in Bay Village but they’ve owned the Billat Cottage for ten years and have made many improvements to it. The house was formerly painted pink but now is white. It’s located at 3887 The Ridge. It is known as “The Nut House” because so many carvings of nuts were made there by Mr. Billat. Sis Bush treasures a tiny bicycle she now has that was carved out of black walnut. Norman Taylor and Wendy Sturm lived in the cottage at one time. They left books and carvings because “they belong to the house”. Sis Bush is looking for paintings done by Mr. Billat. Can anyone help her with that? If so, let me know.

Sports Rocket Wrestlers Excel Again at State

Oak Harbor’s Drew Stone battled his way all the way to the finals of the Ohio Division II 119 lb. weight division, and wrestled the match of his life before losing to Johnni DeJulius of Walsh Jesuit 1-0. Escaping from the bottom has normally been a fairly easy thing for Stone to do this season, but DiJulius held him down for the full two minutes of the third period to claim the win. He nearly made it at the end of the match to send it into overtime, but DeJulius grabbed an ankle and held on as time expired. PHOTO BY DR. MICHAEL STONE

“Oak Harbor knew it would be a tough district tournament but were well prepared after coming out of a tough sectional,” Rocket wrestling coaches say on their website. “Every one of the eight qualifiers won at least one match, but it was just not enough to take the team title.” Rocket coaches believe Oak Harbor’s three titlists have set themselves up for this weekend’s state tournament with good draws, ensuing that they will not meet another district champ until the semifinals, if they take care of business in the preliminary rounds and quarterfinal rounds. Junior Drew Stone (36-2) won his first district title at the 119 pound class in what became a carbon copy match from his sectional final. Stone was matched up against sectional runner-up John Worthington (34-5) from Shelby for the second week in a row, and once again, Stone had to come back from a 4-0 first period deficit. The Rocket grappler ended up conditioning his opponent by beating

Three Oak Harbor wrestlers won district titles at the Fostoria Division II District last weekend and one more took second as the team took fourth place overall in what ended up being a close team race. As a result, the four Oak Harbor wrestlers are all headed to the state tournament this weekend at Value City Arena in Columbus. Parma Padua Fransiscan won the District team race with 125 ½ points, followed by Lexington (124), Toledo Central Catholic (122 ½), and Oak Harbor (118).

for that coveted state title,” coaches say. Sophomore Konner Witt (37-7) showed what he was made of in the 140 weight class by defeating a fifth-ranked Jon McKee (31-8) from Medina Highland, 3-2. With very little time left, Witt clung to his defense in what could have been a match changing takedown. Coaches say Witt’s “edge of the seat antics” earned him Oak Harbor’s third individual district crown. In other finals action, junior Mike Mallernee (34-8) was downed by second-ranked wrestler from Padua, Riley Kilroy (46-5), 9-2. “Although close on several takedown attempts, Mallernee just could not finish and had to settle for second place,” Rocket coaches state. Freshman Alex Bergman left the tournament with a fifth place finish after batting what Rocket coaches called “a close and controversial match.” He will be Oak Harbor’s lone state alternate, meaning if someone from his district does not make it to the state, he will fill in. Stone, Witt, and Mallernee are all making their second trips to the state tournament. District opponents McKee, Kilroy, and Worthington will also all be in Columbus setting up potential re-matches.

Three other wrestlers ended their season wondering what if, coaches said, and will have to wait until next year to compete at state. Juniors Zach Bergman, Drew Bahnsen, and Zach Sandwisch each won matches, but not enough to make it out. Coaches say the four qualifiers and alternate “will be working hard this week preparing for the state tournament,” which starts Thursday, Mar. 5 at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus.

Lakers Lose in Sectional Final Lady Rockets Suffer Through Difficult Season to Top Seeded St. Mary’s It was a back and forth game all night between the #1 seeded St. Mary’s Panthers and the #3 seeded Danbury Lakers, but two back to back three point field goals by the Panthers with under four minutes remaining broke a 50-50 tie, which led St. Mary’s to a 64-58 win. “Our players gave great effort and fought very hard, but those two shots were tough to overcome,” said Coach Joe Miller. “They hit eleven three pointers tonight, and we were still even late in the game. We have nothing to be ashamed of. We improved a great deal throughout the season, and I am very proud of our players,” added Miller. Michael Hamann, playing in his last game, led a balanced Laker attack with 14 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Rodney Johnson tallied 12 points, while Hunter Stephens added 9 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. Tyler Boring

Dick Heller has been in the coaching business for more than three decades, so he’s used to calling things as he sees them. Heller, in his eighth year coaching Oak Harbor’s girls basketball team, said he was “hoping for more wins” this season. The inexperienced Rockets finished 7-14 and 4-10 in the Sandusky Bay Conference following last week’s 44-29 loss to top-seeded Bellevue in the sectional finals. “Of our 13 regular-season losses, eight of them were by single digits,” Heller said. “We really felt that the lack of varsity experience and confidence hurt us a little bit from time to time. We didn’t really establish one of those goto people who get things done for you in crunch time. Eveybody tried, but it just didn’t seem to happen for us this year.” Heller said the Rockets gave everything they had, and he never saw them quit. “I was really pleased with the effort we got out of the ladies,” Heller said. “They worked their tails off. They were frustrated, too. They knew the tradition we’ve had and they didn’t want to let that down. They were frustrated, especially with the close calls we had, but they kept on working.” Junior guard Sara Lipstraw was a second-team All-SBC pick and a firstteam District 7 selection after averaging 12 points a game. She also led the team in assists and steals. Senior guards Sam Scott and Meghan Carpenter both earned honorable mention all-conference honors. Both were first-year varsity players. “Sam really came on from the midway point of the season,” Heller said. Junior forward Erica Mauder, who had 16 points in the loss to Bellevue, saw extensive playing time along with Kayla Diefenthaler. The sophomore post, an honorable mention all-district pick, led the Rockets in rebounding despite playing only 17 games. Senior Meghan Miller, a first-year varsity player, also came on strong near the end of the season and was named honorable mention All-SBC. Junior post players Abby Zurvelac and Rachel Hegemeir also made progress.

Port Clinton Senior Bowler Justin Netherland finished 15th in singles in the OHSAA State Tournament at Tiki Lanes in Lancaster Saturday. He rolled games of 220-258-158 for a 636 series. Last year, Netherland finished 7th in the same event. “Justin threw the ball great the first two games, cool, smooth, and under control. Looking at the standings, it appears he was 3rd after the first 2 games. The last game he seemed to tighten up and the loose fluid shots he made the first two games just didn’t happen,” said Coach Bob Black. “To be able to qualify for State two years in a row is an accomplishment, and so is finishing 15th out of 96 bowlers (80 on the 16 qualifying teams, + 16 qualifying singles). Justin had a very good career for Port Clinton.”

“They all listened to what we had to tell them and what to work on,” Heller said. “They got better during the season, we just didn’t get it quite developed the way we wanted to. I’m still very proud of the girls.” Heller didn’t deny that the Rockets would have been much better with the services of junior Kim Meyer and senior Rebekah Will. Both girls transferred to Oak Harbor and played for the Rockets last season, but they transferred back to their home school district, Lake, prior to this season. The Flyers went on to record the program’s first 20-0 regular season and won their first Suburban Lakes League title. Lake is coached by Kim Meyer’s father, Denny, who was a varsity assistant under Heller at Oak Harbor for two years. Heller said there are no hard feelings with his former players. “We always kid them that they should have stayed,” he said. “I don’t fault them. I wish we had them and they were still here. I think our eight (close) losses would have been wins. Knowing the caliber of players they are, they really would have helped us. Kim always wanted to play for her dad, and she played on his AAU team.” It was ironic that Denny Meyer had such success in his first year as Lake’s coach. Heller’s first Oak Harbor team went 15-5 and followed with back-toback 20-0 seasons. “There is so much I learned from coach Heller,” Meyer said. “A lot of it was his intensity. When I went to Oak Harbor with him I was told he was intense, and that’s what I liked. That’s why I wanted my daughter to play for him ... I learned to be a good listener with my assistant coaches because he was great with me with listening to any input I had.” Heller said he is happy for Meyer’s success. Lake beat visiting Oak Harbor 61-29 this season. “He knows basketball,” Heller said. “I liked his intensity and what he brought to the game. He’s always wanted to be a varsity coach and he got his chance and did a great job. He’s been putting in his time all along. He deserves his chance and he deserves the outcome he’s getting. I’m very proud and pleased to see what kind of success he’s having.”

Business Magruder to Host Open House for New Medical Office Building Magruder Hospital is hosting a public open house on Sunday, March 29th, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at its new Medical Office Building, located behind the hospital at 611 Fulton Street, Port Clinton. There will be refreshments and tours of the new facility. The new office building was designed to house the practices of: Dr. Peter vanden Berg, General Surgery; Dr. Leonardo Que, Cardiology; Dr. Christopher Stranathan, Internal Medicine; Dr. Kevin Sneider, Podiatry; Dr. Thomas Rowe, Family Practice and Dr. Susan Perng, Family Practice. All of the physicians had input on the setup of their offices. The building also has additional clinic space for the hospital to utilize as its services continue to grow. According to Jack Smith, Magruder’s Vice-President of Support Services, Magruder broke ground on the project a year ago and invested $2.4 million. “All of the physicians, ex-

cept Drs. Rowe and Perng, were located in a building on our campus that was constructed in 1973 and was not ADA compliant. The physicians and patients did not have adequate parking, and the office staffs did not have a space that could meet the workload demands they face today. The new Medical Office Building takes care of those issues. Smith said each physician practice has three exam rooms and other supporting space which allows for better patient flow, more convenient parking and increased technological capabilities. The office staffs have larger work spaces, extra storage areas for patient files and an overall setup that allows for better work efficiency. “Many people have been watching this construction since we started and have been waiting for the completion. We really hope they will join us to see the great end result, said Smith.

CD. Your money will be locked up for a longer period of time, but it will help provide you with a more stable income stream over time. • Create a fixed-income “ladder.â€? To combat interest-rate concerns, you might want to build a fixed-income “ladderâ€? by buying several CDs or bonds with varying maturities — short-term, intermediate-term and long-term. When market rates are low, you’ll still have your longer-term vehicles earning higher interest rates. And when market interest rates are high, you can reinvest the maturing short-term bonds and CDs at the higher rates. Thus far, we’ve talked about replacing a maturing CD to protect your income stream. But if you bought a CD for another purpose — such as removing some of your money from a volatile stock market — then the CD’s maturity gives you a chance to re-evaluate your investment strategy. As you know, 2008 was a tough year for the stock market, so, at the time, diverting some of your money to a CD might have seemed smart. But history tells us that even the worst bear markets don’t last forever, and that the biggest gains in a rally often occur at the early stages. Consequently, you may want to take this opportunity to “rebalanceâ€? your portfolio, and, if appropriate for your individual situation, look for ways to invest the proceeds of your CD into quality equities or other securities. By planning ahead, you won’t feel rushed to make a hasty decision when your CD matures or, even worse, be tempted to spend the money and have little to show for it. Your maturing CD can help you achieve your financial goals — if you give it a chance. This article was provided by Edward Jones.

Eleven National Bank of Oak Harbor employees were honored February 21 during the bank’s employee recognition dinner held at the Catawba Island Club. The event, held annually, highlights the accomplishments of bank staff. “In a time when many companies are forgoing company dinners, picnics or events, we feel very fortunate to be able to provide such a wonderful evening of recognition and camaraderie for our employees, directors, retirees and their respective guests, stated Gary P. Macko, President and CEO. “We have dedicated staff members who work hard throughout the year; this is the bank’s way of simply saying we appreciate them and what they do. Gary P. Macko welcomed everyone to the event and emphasized what a special year 2009 is for the bank, since the bank is celebrating 75 years of service. Macko introduced the Board members and retirees in attendance. He then introduced employees who joined the NBOH staff in 2008 who were in attendance: Jerry Christensen, Chief Lending Officer; Amy Haitonic, Credit Analyst; Mike Favro, Teller and Kim Deal, Mortgage Processor. Director Dr. Dennis Laub, with the assistance of director John Caputo, passed out the Thomas F. Palmer Employee Recognition certificates and awards to the following recipients for their years of dedicated service to The National Bank of Oak Harbor: 5 Years - Paula Schimming, Jeanne Mix, Donna Ebert and Jennifer Bartley; 10 Years - Kathleen Robinson and Gary Macko; 20 Years - Karen Stripling, Connie Fabian and Mary Lou Clark; 25 Years - Len Gerber and 40 Years - Marie Truman. Established in 1934, The National Bank of Oak Harbor is an independent, locally-owned and operated community bank with four full service offices located in Oak Harbor, Curtice, Port Clinton and Oregon. In addition, a loan processing center is located in Fremont, OH. More information about The National Bank of Oak Harbor can be found at www.nboh.com.

Some things, like fine wines, get better with age. But a certificate of deposit (CD) is not one of them. If you have a maturing CD, you need to decide what to do with it — and the earlier you make this decision, the better off you’ll be. So if you’ve got one or more CDs GARY COON, coming due in the next few months, EDWARD JONES start planning now. INVESTMENTS Of course, if you had a specific goal for a maturing CD — such as a college tuition payment — your decision has already been made. But if you’ve purchased a CD for another reason, you’ll have to choose whether to renew it or invest the proceeds elsewhere. If you bought the CD for the income it provides, you may want to renew it. If prevailing interest rates are the same, or higher, than the rate on your maturing CD, you can purchase a new CD without worrying about reducing your income stream. But if rates have fallen, you may have a dilemma: How can you reproduce the income you received from your now-matured CD? Here are a few alternatives to consider: • Purchase a bond that pays a higher rate. Instead of buying another CD, you could possibly purchase another fixedincome instrument, such as a bond, that pays a higher interest rate. Be aware, though, that if you find a bond that pays a higher rate, you may be taking on more risk, so make sure any bond you purchase is considered “investment grade qualityâ€? by the independent rating agencies. • Buy a longer-term CD. Generally speaking, you can get a higher interest rate when you purchase a longer-term
