Since last week when we announced that the Now You Decide program was available on The Beacon’s website, www.thebeacon. net, and on WPCR online radio, nearly 2,000 folks have taken advantage of it and viewed the program there. In February, The Beacon’s website received nearly 32,500 visits, an average of 1,160 per day. Our hit total was 728,786! Did I hear somebody say “Paperless Newspaper”? Speaking of that, one of our newspaper carriers last week brought back 123 various newspapers and fliers, including Beacons as part of our Clean-Up Ottawa County campaign. –––––––– We had 145 entries in our Find Wylie contest this week. This week’s winner is Vivian Saylor of Port Clinton, who found Wylie Walleye in the Bell Mell’s ad on page 8A in last week’s Beacon. Vivian wins a $20 Gift Certificate from Just For Ewe. Wylie will be hiding again this week, so when you find him, fill out the Find Wylie Ad and drop it at our office (Beacon Place Shopping Center, next to Goodwill). Or … click on Wylie on our website homepage, www.thebeacon.net. Our “Win it on the Web” Contest winner this week is Terris Payne of PC, chosen from 125 entries, Terris just clicked her way to a $20 gas card from Friendship Food Stores. You could be our next winner. Just log on to www.thebeacon.net and click on the “Win it on the Web” icon. –––––––– Got a little Cabin Fever going? The next First Friday Fundraiser at Mango Mama’s is this Friday, March 6 with proceeds from the $10 entrance charge going to the Port Clinton High School baseball and softball teams. It all starts at 8 p.m. ––––––––

$2.04 Million Headed to Camp Perry The Ohio Army National Guard will direct $2.8 million in federal stimulus funding for energy efficiencies to area Army Guard facilities. The total represents nearly one third of the $8.54 million in funding the Ohio Army National Guard will receive under the recently passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. “Upgrading facilities for energy efficiency is an investment in keeping future costs down and insuring our community readiness through the time honored tradition of the National Guard,” said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur. “I am pleased to have been able to help bring resources to our local commands for improvements that will put people to work and save taxpayer dollars into the future.” $2.04 million will be directed to the Camp Perry Training Facility, Port Clinton, for projects that include energy saving window replacements, an upgrade of facility electricity distribution and improvements to water delivery systems on the site.

Bill Worley, left, receives congratulations for his winning lobster bisque recipe.

What a great time we had last Friday night at the Magruder Hospital Charity Ball. The Theme was “Out of Africa”, and Dr. Panju Prithviraj and his wife Parvathi decided that Safari dress was certainly appropriate. Joining them for this photo is Janet St. Marie, who did not dress for Safari. Our annual Charity Ball photo gallery is online at www.thebeacon.net and also on page 5A this week. ––––––––– It is Lent, a time of refraining from meat on Fridays in the Catholic faith. What a tragedy! Now we have to eat delicious Lake Erie Perch and Walleye at the Fish Fries put on by the Port Clinton Knights of Columbus at Denny Bergeman Hall or at the St. Boniface Fish Fries in Oak Harbor. ––––––––– The Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours is Thursday, March 5 from 5-7 p.m. at Baumann’s Auto Center in their Chrysler/Plymouth/Jeep building. Also, accountant Bob Apling will be giving a short presentation on the Tax Stimulus Bill at the Ida Rupp Public Library on Wednesday, March 18 at 8 a.m. ––––––––– Jim Mortus, son of Bob and Carol Mortus of Port Clinton, enjoys his job working for Southwest Airlines in Dallas. A company executive, he sometimes has to deliver the bad news in tough economic times. But a couple of weeks ago, however, he flew to Denver and handed out a check for $10,000 to one of his employees, Chris Williams. Said Mortus, “If we care for our employees they are going to care for our customers”. ––––––––– The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be visiting the Port Clinton Moose Lodge this coming Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.. Make it a point now to give the gift of life if you can. ––––––––– Mark Sunday, March 15 at 4 p.m. down on your calendar, for a Charity Basketball Game to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation to find a cure for breast cancer. The game will feature the Oak Harbor Coaching staff against the Senior All-Stars and will be held at Oak Harbor High School.

Marblehead Resident Wins Florida Chowder Competition Bill Worley, now a full-time resident of Marblehead, won the Marathon Florida Seafood Chowder competition. According to the judges “winning by a landslide” his Lobster Bisque topped even the local restaurant entry. There were a large number of entries, many using local seafoods. The competition, a fundraiser for Relay For Life, was held at Frosty’s Restaurant, just off the Overseas Highway in the Keys. The area is a popular winter destination for many locals who were there to show their support. “His entry and his presentation were superb and by comparison, hands down the best,” said Glen Hartzel and Jeri, also from Marblehead. Worley and his wife Gail relocated to their summer home on the West Harbor in 2008.

On Thursday, February 26, the Ottawa County Sheriff ’s Office received phone calls from various financial institutions within the County. It appears that automated phone calls are being received by individuals, advising them that their ATM cards have been deactivated. The automated system requests that the individual push a specific number if the individual wishes to have the ATM reactivated or push another number should the individual wish to continue to have the ATM deactivated. Should the individual choose to have his ATM card reactivated, he is then advised

doesn’t work.” He said, “We have created an enormous debt to boot!” Economist’s Lew Rockwell said “the stimulus plan is like trying to repel gravity by throwing things into the air” and Walter Williams said, “It is like trying to raise the water in the pool by taking it out of the deep end and pouring into the shallow end.” What is scary about this pork for pet political projects plan is it includes the framework for taking control of your medical care away from you and your physician and giving it to some bureaucrat. How does that stimulate and what else have they covered up? Another scary scenario is hearing President Obama say, “Only the government can fix this economy”. What he misses is the economy isn’t a thing that can be fixed: it is simply the value preferences of all consumers which are always a moving target. If President Obama is serious about getting the economy moving, he will start by removing the poisonous tentacles of government that have created this mess and that restrain businesses that employ. So far I don’t see it as part of his DNA. Jim Boehm Port Clinton

The Beacon I

Thursday, March 5, 2009

BeaconBits I was riding over to Norwalk early Saturday morning, February 21, having left Port Clinton at 7 a.m. I’d left home at about 6:40 a.m. and there was a pretty crescent moon in the sky - in a place where it was easy to watch it out the front windshield. I thought it was interesting to see because, as more and more light came into the sky from the dawn and then from the rising sunlight, the crescent appeared to grow thinner and thinner. I’m not sure that I ever really watched a crescent moon in the morning light before. Anyway, the visual appearance of it got pencil thin and then, suddenly, I could no longer see it. It was just gone, disappeared, eaten up by the amount of light increasing in the heavens. Watch it sometime. I found it to be fascinating. ~~~~~ There was a dinner and party recently at Plum Brook Country Club in Sandusky to honor several loyal Erie County public servants. Among them was Fred Deering. Fred, formerly our state representative, was honored not only for his service in the statehouse but also for his service as Erie County Commissioner and for longtime service on boards and commissions throughout the north coast area of Ohio. In fact, it took two pages in the awards booklet to detail all of Fred’s accomplishments. ~~~~~ Martha Dykes wrote that she had enjoyed reading about bird watching in this column a couple of weeks ago. She says that she had an unusual bird at her feeder this past week. It was a female yellow-headed blackbird. The female of the species has yellow only as a ‘bib’ rather than having a completely yellow head. Be watching for the various types of birds in your own lawn. It is fun and it is completely free. So if money is in short supply you can still pursue the hobby of bird watching! ~~~~~ The February-March issue of “Lake Erie Living” Magazine had a great article about waterfront weddings. It was the cover story and the photo depicted a bride standing on a huge flat boulder on the shore. Inside was a long, interesting article about recent weddings that took place looking out on the lake. As you might imagine, several of these ceremonies were in Ottawa County – Catawba Island or Put-In-Bay. Some were at private residences. Some were at venues such as Catawba Island Club or the Crews Nest at Put-In-Bay on South Bass Island. For some of the couples interviewed, getting married anywhere other than at the lake was out of the question; they did not even consider another location. All of those interviewed were happy about their choice of location for the ceremony. Certain rules came into play such as guests being advised that the ceremony would be out-of-doors so they can wear appropriate clothing and the necessity for sound amplification for even a short distance. So if you’re contemplating getting married, it is not necessary for the ceremony to take place inside a building. Other options such as a park (by the shore or inland), a lawn, a garden, or even a barn – if that’s what interests you – might turn out to be a likely place. In the same magazine I was delighted to find a story and photo layout of the home of Bill and Darleen Van Der Giessen in the Catawba Cliffs. The exterior of the house is made of tufa rock. Tufa, the article says, is essentially a porous deposit of calcium carbonate. Along the Catawba Cliffs tufa was sometimes used in the construction of homes during the 1920s and 1930s. The Van Der Giessen’s house was built in 1927. Darleen had seen the home as a child and had always been fascinated by it. After their marriage they noticed the house was for sale but it had fallen into disrepair. They contacted the real estate agent. Especially appealing was that the house had great views from all windows so almost immediately they made an offer on it. Extensive renovations that left the

tufa rock visible inside the house were made but otherwise the interior of the building was completely updated. The magazine photos of it are lovely. I recommend taking a BY VIRGINIA PARK look at this Lake Erie Living magazine. It is published in Brunswick, Ohio by Long Point Media. For subscriptions call 1-800-718-5727. ~~~~~ The Perry Group (Friends of Perry’s Monument on South Bass Island) is conducting its annual membership drive. Their letter says that the year 2009 will be an exciting one on the island. The new monument park superintendent has put together a roster of activities and events for the summer tourist season. Something new on the agenda will be a series of Wednesday night concerts (every other week) sponsored by the Put-In-Bay Arts Council. And, very good news, the U.S.S. Brig Niagara may come to the island twice this summer, June 26 – 29 and August 22 – 24. Mike Mans will be the new president of the Perry Group as these events unfold. ~~~~~ Henry C. Seibert is the interim pastor at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Port Clinton. He will be there for the next few months. He and his wife Becky live on a farm west of Fremont. They are fifth generation farm owners. Rev. Seibert will assist the congregation as it makes the transition to a new pastor and to a new collaboration with Peace Lutheran Church. Worship service time at St. Thomas is at 9 on Sunday mornings. ~~~~~ As most readers of this column know, my “day job” is serving as Ottawa County Recorder. In that capacity I recently sent a letter to all area papers about military service discharges. But I want to write about it here, too, because it is an unusual situation. Throughout history (at least back to the Civil War) many military service discharge papers have been placed on file in the Recorder’s office. These are public records and have been open to view by anyone. However, a new law mandates that all military discharge records in the State of Ohio will now be closed to the public for 75 years. The new law takes effect Monday, April 6. Beginning that day all service discharges recorded since 1934 will no longer be considered a public record and will be hidden from public view. These will include all discharges of veterans who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam as well as in peacetime service. Even some discharge papers of veterans who served in World War I may be hidden, depending on when the paper was filed in the Recorder’s office. In the future these records will be available only to the veteran and a limited number of other people, some of whom are a veteran’s heir and funeral director, a court, a veteran’s service officer, etc. But most people will not be allowed to make a copy of the record or even to look at it. So, if you are a relative of a veteran – or if you are doing historical research – you have only a short time left to view these records. They give a lot of valuable and interesting information. They relate where a person was inducted and discharged, schooling accomplished in the service, awards and medals (and lots of other neat stuff). Because they included birth dates and some personal data, they are an important resource for people compiling family histories and genealogies. Come to the Courthouse, 315 Madison Street, (Room 204) at Port Clinton. If a veteran needs a copy of his own discharge, there is no cost. There is a minimal fee for others who purchase copies. Our office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you are unable to visit during office hours, call me at 419-734-6731 to make arrangements. We will also send a copy by mail for $2 a page if that is more convenient for you.

Tax Preparation Help Available at United Way United Way in Ottawa County is offering free tax preparation for working families. One of the main goals of this service is to help low to middle income working families or people who have lost their jobs and/or homes claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which brings federal tax refund dollars back into the pockets of Ottawa County residents. “This is a great service for our working families,” said Chris Galvin, Director of United Way in Ottawa County. “It helps us bring valuable dollars back to Ottawa County that many residents are then pumping back into our local economy.” Tax preparation services are performed by IRS-trained and certified volunteers by appointment at the Sutton Center. If interested in scheduling an appointment or for more information on other free tax preparation services, dial 2-1-1. If you have your taxes prepared elsewhere and are a low to middle income level family, be sure to ask if you are eligible for the EITC.

Salem Township Plans Cemetery Cleanup The Salem Township Trustees begin a Cemetery Cleanup at both Union and Roose Cemeteries on March 15. It’s Kind of hard to find to many things to get excited about these days. Everything’s pretty tough both business-wise and personally for lots of folks. Of course, it would be nice if the media would quit pounding everyone over the head with negative news over and over again. It’s becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. But we felt pretty darn good the other day when, after announcing some pretty tough financial results for the end o the year. Ford still said it sees no need to ask for government loans. Chief Executive Alan Mulally said “Right now, I think with everything planned in the fiscal and monetary policy, I am very comfortable that we are going to start to turn things around through the second half of the year.” That doesn’t mean they aren’t using lines of credit, but they’ve done it the old fashioned way, they went out to the banks and the financial markets and found financing while putting up collateral just like we would all have to do. Now that doesn’t mean there aren’t good reasons to help GM and Chrysler, but we’re pretty proud of Ford for fighting through this on their own. With that being said, Ford is still putting out great vehicles. Our Vehicles are safe (more top safety -rated vehicles than any other manufacturer), high quality (now in a virtual tie with Toyota and Honda), good looking and fun to drive. In fact, Ford gained market share the last three months of 2008. And there’s a lot more coming soon. Ford has said that, despite the economic challenges out there, they’re pulling back on the most important thing of all; product. There are a lot of leading-edge cars, trucks, cross-overs and SUVs coming soon. We’re proud to be a Ford dealer and feel fortunate to be associated with a great Ford team. The leaders in Detroit and the UAW workers here in Northwest Ohio and everywhere know this is an important time. These men and women are working hard every day to bring to market the vehicles that Americans deserve. We’re all pulling together to bring the best products and service to out customers. If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, I hope you at least consider a Ford.

A member of the Humane Society, along with her furry friends, paid a visited to the classroom to accept a check for $170. Administrator/Teacher Mary Jo Rospert said, “The children were so happy to help the homeless animals at the shelter. We had fun working on this project. Thanks to all who bought and donated to the cause. Rebecca Krupp is the Preschool’s Aide. Open enrollment for the 2009-2010 school year has begun. If interested, call the school at (419)-734-9698.

Stewart Takes 2nd at State PC freshman MacKenzie Stewart knew the task was daunting, but she was up for the challenge. The result was a second place finish in the women’s breaststroke at the State Swimming and Diving Championships held in Canton over the weekend. She finished second to two time State Champion Brittany Rospierski, a senior from Hawken High School near Cleveland. MacKenzie Stewart pushed Rospierski to a new state record in the event, as she beat her own mark set last year. Stewart also finished 4th in the State in the Individual Medley event. As a team, Port Clinton finished 17th while Oak Harbor finished 34th.

Three Oak Harbor wrestlers won district titles at the Fostoria Division II District last weekend and one more took second as the team took fourth place overall in what ended up being a close team race. As a result, the four Oak Harbor wrestlers are all headed to the state tournament this weekend at Value City Arena in Columbus. Parma Padua Fransiscan won the District team race with 125 ½ points, followed by Lexington (124), Toledo Central Catholic (122 ½), and Oak Harbor (118). “Oak Harbor knew it would be a tough district tournament but were well prepared after coming out of a tough sectional,” Rocket wrestling coaches say on their website. “Every one of the eight qualifiers won at least one match, but it was just not enough to take the team title.” Rocket coaches believe Oak Harbor’s three titlists have set themselves up for this weekend’s state tournament with good draws, ensuing that they will not meet another district champ until the semifinals, if they take care of business in the preliminary rounds and quarterfinal rounds. Junior Drew Stone (36-2) won his first district title at the 119 pound class in what became a carbon copy match from his sectional final. Stone was matched up against sectional runner-up John Worthington (34-5) from Shelby for the second week in a row, and once again, Stone had to come back from a 4-0 first period deficit. Oak Harbor Girls Basketball Season Final

Netherland Explodes for 762 PC Boys 8th at District Port Clinton’s Justin Netherland Exploded with a 762 series on games of 279-256-227 at the OHSAA District Bowling Tournament at Westgate Lanes in Lima Friday evening. Despite Netherland’s record score, the PC Boys failed to advance to the State Finals next weekend in Lancaster, finishing 8th out of 16 teams at the District. Port Clinton Coach Bob Black observed, “Justin bowled extremely well. He had the talent to play like this all

year. Outside of Alex, (Viery) no one stepped up to help Justin. We were the 15th high scoring team out of 16 from sectionals, and we improved to 8th, so I’m happy we did better. But, too many first ball mistakes cost us too many open frames. We did outscore Coldwater the 2nd game and baker, so we did accomplish that.” Netherland advances to the State Finals in singles competition at Tiki Lanes 1st place 762 series Justin Nethin Lancaster next Saturday, where he erland from PC on left, runnerup from Ottawa-Glandorf Trent finished 7th in singles last year. Laker Ladies Finish with a Squeaker BY J. PATRICK EAKEN The Danbury girls’ basketball season came to an abrupt halt in the Norwalk High School Division IV sectional final last Saturday. Top-seeded Danbury and Norwalk St. Paul went into the final quarter tied at 22 points each, but St. Paul pulled out a squeaker 33-32. St. Paul had defeated South Central 67-22 to reach the final, Danbury received a first-round bye.

Danbury was led by Heather Bahnsen, who scored 10 points, including 4-for5 from the charity stripe. Christine Longer had nine points, including a 3-point field goal. Jackie Lammers and Tori England each had a 3-pointer and each scored five points, and K.C. Oxendale scored three points. St. Paul opened the game by taking a 12-3 with Laker Christine Longer scoring all three first quarter points on a field goal and a free throw. But Dan-

bury made a second and third quarter comeback, outscoring St. Paul 19-10 over the middle two periods. Danbury out rebounded St. Paul 21 to 15, with Destiny Taylor leading the Lakers with six caroms. Danbury shot 54 percent (9-for-17) from the charity stripe, St. Paul 43 percent (3-for-7). The Lakers season ended with a 14-7 record, and they were 9-3 during regular season Toledo Area Athletic Conference play.

BY J. PATRICK EAKEN The Oak Harbor girls’ basketball season came to end of Bellevue in a 44-29 loss in the Old Fort High School sectional final Saturday. The Rockets had defeated Ottawa County rival Port Clinton in the sectional opener, 55-37, to reach the final. Top seeded Bellevue had a first round bye. Bellevue led 23-14, and the Rockets outscored their opponents in the third quarter but Bellevue finished with a 14-7 advantage over the final eight minutes. Junior Erica Mauder led Oak Harbor with 16 points, including a game-high four 3-point field goals. Senior Sara Lipstraw scored eight points, including two 3-point goals, senior Katie Lemon and sophomore Kayla Diefenthaler each scored two points, and freshman Morgan Turnow added one point. Seniors playing their final game for Oak harbor included Lemon, Morgan Price, Samantha Scott, Meghan Carpenter, and Meghan Miller. Oak Harbor’s season ends with a 7-14 overall record. For Bellevue, Leslie Raifsnider scored a game-high 21 points. Bellevue advances to face Wauseon at the Bowsher High School district in Toledo.

HE’S BACK!

PC Baseball Team to Play at Fifth Third Field The Port Clinton Redskin Varsity Baseball team has been given an opportunity to play at one of the finest Minor League baseball parks in the country. The Redskins will be playing their cross-county rival, Oak Harbor, at Fifth Third Field in Toledo. The game will take place at the Home of the Mud Hens on May 5 beginning at 7 p.m. (Starting time is subject to change.) Admission to the Port Clinton/Oak Harbor game is free to the public when vouchers are purchased at Port Clinton High School to attend a 2009 Mud Hens season game. The vouchers allow attendees to attend any Mud Hens game during the 2009 season.

Cost for a voucher is $12 and $3 of every voucher will be donated to the Port Clinton Baseball Support Fund. This fund is used to purchase additional equipment and supplies for the baseball team. Success in selling the vouchers will allow athletes the chance to turn this into an annual event. Vouchers can be purchased at the Port Clinton High School Office. Stop by the office between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. or contact Coach Tracy Bodi, Kathie Meek or Amy Kelly at the High School at 419-734-2147.

ended up conditioning his opponent by beating him 8-6 on a series of takedowns. In the 135 class, sophomore Ian Miller (40-2) continued his quest for a state title by dismantling his opponent from Lima Bath 15-3. After starting out with a 4-1 first period lead, Miller “poured it one for the next two periods leaving no doubt he is focused and ready to make a run for that coveted state title,” coaches say. Sophomore Konner Witt (37-7) showed what he was made of in the 140 weight class by defeating a fifthranked Jon McKee (31-8) from Medina Highland, 3-2. With very little time left, Witt clung to his defense in what could

have been a match changing takedown. Coaches say Witt’s “edge of the seat antics” earned him Oak Harbor’s third individual district crown. In other finals action, junior Mike Mallernee (34-8) was downed by second-ranked wrestler from Padua, Riley Kilroy (46-5), 9-2. “Although close on several takedown attempts, Mallernee just could not finish and had to settle for second place,” Rocket coaches state. Freshman Alex Bergman left the tournament with a fifth place finish after batting what Rocket coaches called “a close and controversial match.” He will be Oak Harbor’s lone state alternate, meaning if someone from his district does not make it to the state, he will fill in.

Stone, Witt, and Mallernee are all making their second trips to the state tournament. District opponents McKee, Kilroy, and Worthington will also all be in Columbus setting up potential re-matches. Three other wrestlers ended their season wondering what if, coaches said, and will have to wait until next year to compete at state. Juniors Zach Bergman, Drew Bahnsen, and Zach Sandwisch each won matches, but not enough to make it out. Coaches say the four qualifiers and alternate “will be working hard this week preparing for the state tournament,” which starts Thursday, Mar. 5 at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus.

Business Educator of the Year Award Presented Dr. Donald D. Gustovich, who has an office in Port Clinton, was recently honored by the Orthodontic Department of Case Western Reserve University with the “Educator of the Year” award. Dr. Gustovich has been a part-time faculty member for the Department of Orthodontics in the School of Dentistry for over twenty years. This award is voted

on by the orthodontic graduate students, as well as the forty-two faculty members of the Orthodontic Department. Dr. Gustovich recently attended the Eighth Annual Damon Forum of Orthodontics in Phoenix, Arizona in January. Twelve hundred orthodontists attended this intense four-day seminar. Both basic and advanced Damon orthodontic techniques were presented. The Damon System is an innovative combination of passive, self-litigating brackets, high-tech archwires and minimally invasive treatment protocols that work together as a low-friction, low-

force system. The end result is clinically proven performance that includes faster treatment time, fewer appointments, improved patient comfort, exceptional results and wider arch development with fewer extractions. Dr. Gustovich is certified in the Damon System and teaches this orthodontic technique at Case Western Reserve University. He also has been selected by Dr. Damon and Ormco Corporation as one of ten Damon system instructors in the United States to teach this technique to other orthodontists. To learn more about the Damon System go to www. damonsystem.com.

When you’re working, you have a financial strategy that is largely based on one goal: saving money for a comfortable retirement. You’ll likely have to make many adjustments over several decades to ensure that you stay on track saving and investing. But once you retire, a new goal arises — investing so you can remain retired. To help yourself achieve this goal, you will need to make a number of investment decisions. Which of these decisions are most important? Here are five to consider: • How much will you spend each year? Before you can pursue an appropriate investment strategy, you’ll need to know about how much you’ll spend each year. Estimate your costs for housing, food, travel, entertainment, insurance, gifts — everything. Keep in mind that your expenses will likely change annually, especially for items such as health care. Don’t forget about inflation, which will likely cause your expenses to increase over the years. • How should you balance your investment portfolio to provide sufficient income and growth opportunities? Clearly, you’ll need your investments to provide a source of income during your retirement years. At the same time, you will need some growth potential to overcome the effects of inflation, which can erode your purchasing power. Consequently, you will need a mix of income- and growth-oriented investments, with the proportions depending on your risk tolerance and your lifestyle. • How much should you

withdraw each year from your investment portfolio? The answer depends on several factors, including your retirement lifestyle, the size and performance of your investment portfolio, inflation, your estimated life expectancy and the size of the estate you’d like to leave. This decision is important, because the amount you withdraw each year will directly affect how long your money lasts. • From which accounts should you begin taking withdrawals? You may have built three different types of accounts: taxable, taxdeferred and tax-free. It may be a good idea to take withdrawals from your taxable accounts first, thereby allowing your tax-deferred accounts, such as your Traditional IRA and your 401(k), more time to compound and potentially increase in value. If you have a tax-free account, such as a Roth IRA, save it for last to maximize the compounding on money on which you will never pay taxes. (Roth IRA earnings grow tax-free if you’ve had your account at least five years and you don’t begin taking withdrawals until you’re at least 59-1/2.) That said, this is just a rule of thumb. • When should you take Social Security? You can begin taking Social Security as early as age 62, but your monthly checks will be considerably larger if you wait until your “normal” retirement age, which is likely 65 or 66. But if you need the money, you may be better off by taking Social Security at 62 and giving your taxdeferred accounts more time to potentially grow. This article was provided by Edward Jones.
