ONE LAST LESSON On a beautiful spring day in May, I wheeled my husband Tom outside around the patio of the nursing facility he has called home for eight months. Tom seldom talks, given the advance stages of his Parkinson’s disease, but that day he said to me, “I can’t get up by myself any more. This is very confining.” I wonder if Tom sensed that his life was coming to an end. Over the next week or so I traveled on a journey I cannot imagine making without Stein Hospice. Around the clock Stein nurses and aides made sure Tom and I were both comfortable. For me, that meant answering questions about the changes Tom was experiencing, physically and emotionally, as his death neared. Tom’s needs varied. One aide calmed his anxiety by using a healing touch called Reiki. Another, a former student, addressed Tom as Mr. Scheufler, and gently
explained to him what she was doing to care for him. That touched me deeply. The room filled with tears and laughter as we gathered around Tom and told stories and relived fond memories. Even our dachshund Maxie knew Tom no longer needed slobbery kisses, but just a quiet dog by his side. Tom, always a good listener, kept it up until the end. “I know why Tom is taking so long - he doesn’t want to miss out on all this conversation,” a nurse commented. Each day I made multiple visits to Tom’s room, but
usually left around 11 p.m. so I could get some sleep in my own bed. I can’t explain the comfort and reassurance I felt, knowing Tom was not alone and was receiving such tender care from Stein’s continuous care team. After his death, I found comfort from the outpouring of cards and letters from Tom’s former students and co-workers, neighbors and church members, both here and in Arizona. Many commented about Tom’s patient and kind manner, which had made a lasting impression on them. One couple shared

with me this ancient Egyptian belief: “To speak the name of the dead is to make them live again.” Tom will always live inside me, even as I gradually begin replacing “our” life with this foreign terrain called “my” life. For a while at least I will continue to attend Stein’s monthly caregiver support group, and if I find that my grief is not healed over time I will certainly contact Stein’s bereavement department. I learned so much during Tom’s illness - about the compassion and kindness of strangers, about the beauty of living even in the face of death.
