beyond under Obama. What we need is a positive atmosphere for business, not all these constant demeaning remarks about the corporate world, which does nothing but stifle the corporate initiative to grow and invest. Strickland’s constant comments, “I don’t represent the Wall Street guys,” and Obama’s negative comments about the corporate and banking world, gives little incentive for investments and growth. “The big Wall Street guys,” “the millionaire banks,” “how much salary is too much,” and on and on with the negative comments about big business. With Reagonomics, the tax cuts and the economic expansion and a positive business atmosphere, the unemployment dropped from the Carter years to 5.2 under Reagan. These things Reagan implemented: 1. Reduce government spending. 2. Reduce income and capital gains marginal tax rates. 3. Reduce government regulation. 4. Control the money supply to reduce inflation. Clinton. They were supposed to bring a bus into town, but it broke down. So they made it a caravan. When Skomrock concluded his glowing remarks about the job the 200th Red Horse unit had done while deployed, he stood at attention and said, “To the Horse.” It echoed back at him, “To the Horse.”

We need to create 150,000 jobs a year to keep up with population growth. How are we doing? As of the current figures, Ohio’s unemployment rate is 11 percent, a new high for Ohio in modern times. The unemployment rate in Ohio when Strickland took office was 5.3 and the state has now lost 429,300 jobs. At the statehouse in Columbus sits a statue of a former Ohio governor, Jim Rhodes, who was elected a record four times. An inscription on the statue says, “The greatest contribution a governor can make is to create jobs in the private sector.” Ohio ranks sixth in the list of states with the highest job losses. Of course Michigan is first, a state run by Union bosses, high taxes and Democratic politics. From December 2008 to December 2009, more than 255,000 Ohio jobs disappeared. We desperately need lower corporate taxes and a pro-business atmosphere. Currently, the average combined state and federal tax rate in the U.S. is 39.3 percent, second among OECD counties to Japan’s 39.5 percent. The unemployment rate under Bush was 7.6 and soon grew to 9.4 and

JOBS from 1A where. Give yourself some credit. It may take you to a better place that you didn’t even know existed. Or it may exist in your life right now in the form of a hobby. You hear about the people who have turned their hobbies, their interests into a business, some very lucrative. Best of all, it’s something they’ve love to do. How great is that. Above all else, there is one thing you are going to need to survive and thrive. That would be a positive attitude. No matter what happened to you. It is hard to not want to be angry, sad, resentful, d e p re s s e d , withdrawn, with the whole “woe is me” attitude. Think about it —

how far is an attitude like that going to get you? Do you enjoy being around whiners, complainers, blamers? Worse yet, is if you take that with you to an interview. Would you, hire you? Would you want to work with you? Be honest. OK, let’s back up. Another tip: You might not have a clue what to do now. Talk with people. Go to The Job Store. Get to know yourself with some self assessments that are available there. There is help. There are resources. It isn’t that painful. If you do not have a high school diploma or GED, you will need one. There are very few employers who hire those without a high school education. You have the life skills, the skill base from your last job and the work ethic. You need that piece of paper. That’s reality. And, that’s not good enough in many, many instances. If you want to make a good living for yourself and your family, it takes some time and effort — hone those skills, learn new skills. An individual’s earning potential is directly related to an individual’s education level. The more you learn the more you earn. The Job Store is located at 8043 Ohio 163 in the Ottawa County Resource Centre. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Phone: 419898-3688, ext. 270.
