Betty Kline, mother of Keith Kline, cuts the ribbon on Army Sgt. Keith Kline Memorial Highway in front of Union Cemetery surrounded by representatives of the Veterans Service office and state and local officials.

Portion of highway dedicated in honor of Staff Sgt. Keith Kline Friends, family, veterans, officials and community members gathered Monday to honor the memory of Staff Sgt. Keith Kline. Portions of Ohio 105 and 163 — beginning at Union Cemetery, continuing past Kline’s home and ending near the Ottawa County Veterans Services Commission office — are now know known as Army Sgt. Keith Kline Memorial Highway. The 2002 Oak Harbor High School graduate was killed in Iraq on July 5, 2007. “We pray that as each one passes this spot that they will recognize this sign,” said Pastor Chuck Taylor

during the invocation. “That they will remember not only Keith but all veterans.” The ceremony, held at Union Cemetery, included comments by DeAnn Louk, executive director of the Veterans Service office; Parade of the Colors by VFW Post 8732 and American Legion Post 114; and the National Anthem, sung by OHHS senior Megan Wistinghausen. Those who knew Kline, including coaches, a teacher and a friend, spoke about the kind of man and leader he was.

NOV. 8 ELECTION

Voter Registration Deadline

Candidates come together Become a more informed voter at Candidates and Issues Night. During the forum — set for 7 p.m. Oct. 13 — candidates for public offices and representatives of ballot issues will have the opportunity to present their platforms. The event is co-sponsored by Port Clinton Area Business

and Professional Women and the Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce and will be held at the Elks Lodge, 231 Buckeye Blvd., in Port Clinton. Candidates from Port Clinton; Village of Marblehead; Townships of Bay, Catawba, Danbury and Portage have been invited.

The Democratic Central Committee voted unanimously last week to name Steve Levorchick Ottawa County sheriff. The 27-year law enforcement veteran will fill the unexpired term of Bob Bratton who resigned to take over as Genoa police chief. “I’m very humbled by this tonight,” Levorchick said after the announcement was made. “It’s been an aspiration for many years for me.” Levorchick started his career in 1984 and after graduating from the police academy at Owens Community College that year, he went on to work for the Pemberville and Catawba Police departments before joining the sheriff ’s office in 1987. “I hired this gentleman,” said former Ottawa County Sheriff John Crosser. “I could not be any prouder.” Levorchick retired from the department last year and said the year away gave him a fresh look at everything but he’s happy to be back in law enforcement. “It’s good to be home,” he said. He said he is looking forward to continuing the programs started by former Sheriff Bratton and working with the “great, great staff.” The other candidate for the job, recently retired Chief Deputy Randy Riedmaier, asked to be taken out of the running citing upcoming challenges facing the sheriff and department. Levorchick said he’s ready for those challenges, which include the upgrade of the office’s communication and 911 systems, personnel issues, budgets and the potential implications of Issue 2. “As sheriff, I will always try to do what’s right,” he said. “You may not always like the answer you get, but it will be an honest answer.” Levorchick will be sworn in Oct. 7.

The closing date for new voter registration and changes of address for the November General Election is Oct. 11. Special hours Oct. 11 are 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Regular office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Board of Elections office is located at 8444 W. Ohio 63, Oak Harbor.

Representative supporting or opposing three state issues and local issues are also invited. The program will be broadcast on WPCR — www.portclintonradio.com — and taped and later shown on cable. For information, call the Chamber at 419-734-5503.

New registrations and changes of address may also be made at any public library, any Bureau of Motor Vehicle office, the Ottawa County Health Department and at the Ottawa County Courthouse at the Clerk of Courts Title Department or the Treasurers office. Call the Board of Elections office at 419-898-3071 or toll-free 800497-9807 with any questions.

HB 194 Many citizens appreciate having the ability to vote by absentee ballot or by early in-person voting. HB 194, a law signed by Gov. Kasich, would sharply restrict that opportunity, among other things. For example, mail-in absentee voting would be reduced to 21 days from the current 35 days, and early in-person voting would be reduced to 17 days from the current 35 days before the election. This law would especially impact seniors, col-

“His energy was contagious,” said Joe Bergman, Kline’s wrestling coach. “He was an individual that wasn’t given very much, but made everything out of what he was given,” said Staff Sgt. Joe Bergman Jr., who enlisted with Kline after their senior year together at OHHS. Kline’s mother, Betty Kline, also received proclamations by the 129th General Assembly of Ohio and the Ottawa County Commissioners, officially declaring Oct. 3 Army Sgt. Keith Kline Memorial Day.

Musical Arts Series kicks off season with string quartet The Musical Arts Series at Firelands opens its 10th anniversary season at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, with a concert by the Tiberius String Quartet, which is making its United States debut tour. One of the finest young ensembles in Europe, their tour repertoire includes works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorák and Shostakovich. Members of the ensemble are violinists Tibor Molnár and Károly Lokodi, violist József Molnár and cellist ElÅd Zágoni. Although Romanian citizens, all born in the Transylvanian region of Romania, the musicians retain their strong Hungarian identities. Formed in 1994 at the Academy of Music in Cluj, the musicians have been coached and mentored by some of the most respected names in the world of chamber music. The quartet is resident with the Targu Mures Philharmonic and performs 30 concerts each season there. They have performed throughout Europe, including at the Concert-

gebouw in Amsterdam and the Tonhalle in Zurich, as well as in Japan. Each fall at the “Tiberius Week” International Chamber Music Festival in Romania, they perform with guest artists from many of the world’s leading ensembles. The tour has been arranged by Raymond Weiss Artist Management which has toured nearly 150 ensembles from abroad since its inception in the early 1970s, including chamber music groups, chamber orchestras and full symphonic orchestras. Many have appeared for the first time in North America, including the Kodály Quartet, the Czech Trio and the Graffe String Quartet. RWAM artists have hailed from countries including England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Finland, the former Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary and Cuba/Mexico. The concert takes place at Firelands Presbyterian Church, 2626 E. Harbor Road, Port Clinton, and will be followed by a reception at which audience members are invited to

Paul Blausey Farms earns Outstanding Lake Erie CREP Award At the 60th annual meeting of the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District, Paul Blausey Farms was awarded the 2011 Outstanding Lake Erie CREP Award. “In the last several years, Chad Gargas of Paul Blausey Farms has done extensive work and has installed or signed up 14 farms for a total of 17 acres of land to be put into filter strips. These filter strips were not only on land that the Blausey’s own, but also property that is rented. Approximately seven more farms will have filter strips installed on owned and rented ground in the upcoming years,” said Josh Gerwin, District Conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation. “Paul has not only done an excellent job in slowing runoff into our waterways, but has also set an example to his children and grandchildren about the importance of conservation.” The Conservation Reserve Enchancement Program — or CREP — is a partnership among producers, state and federal governments that pays landowners to set aside land into filter strips. CREP is actually an offshoot of the country’s largest private-lands environmental improvement program: the Conservation Reserve Program. If you are interested in receiving payments for establishing filter strips along your ditches, streams or rivers to slow runoff, call Gerwin at 419-898-6431.

March down to museum for majorette exhibit If you lived in Port Clinton in the late 1940s and 1950s, you could hardly have missed Cochran’s Majorettes. The girls marched the streets of the city to their practice field, participated in every parade and raised money around town to pay for their uniforms and equipment through tag sales and raffles. Their story is the subject of a temporary exhibit now at the Ottawa County Museum. In fact, Cochran’s Majorettes put Port Clinton on the national map as they marched in 14 states and Canada and even headlined with Roy Rogers at the Ohio State Fair. The exhibit tells the story of how Paul Cochran founded his own marching corps after recruiting majorettes for

Port Clinton High School marching band director David Stanton and how Cochran coached the girls with a combination of strict military discipline and absolute fairness. Uniforms, flags and batons highlight the red and white display, along with extensive scrapbook and picture collections. The exhibit will remain until after Thanksgiving. Regular open hours for the Ottawa County Museum are from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays until Memorial Day, but those unable to visit during those hours are encouraged to call curator Peggy Debien at 419-732-1039 for an appointment. For more than 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America have been helping young boys become leaders through character-building activities. Community participation is one of the ways Scouts learn and grow. Danbury Township is fortunate to have an active BSA program. Every October, the Holiday Bureau benefits from their enthusiastic help. GALLERY Through the “Scouting for Food” campaign, about 40 Cub and Boy Scouts will distribute nearly 800 grocery bags to homes throughout Danbury Township on Saturday, Oct. 15. Danbury Township residents are urged to look for the bags and fill them with canned goods or boxed food items. On Saturday, Oct. 22, the scouts will return to pick up the filled bags and deliver them to the Holiday Bureau. “These young boys give up two of their Saturday mornings to help,” said Judy Just, unit chairwoman. “It is much appreciated and represents strong values in these young aspiring men. Similar programs go on throughout Ottawa County.” Individuals interested in donating food can drop it off at either of two locations: The Marblehead Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s office, 5681 East Harbor Road, Suite C (across from the Victorian Inn); the Marblehead Buying Jewelry Galley or Otterbein Senior & US Coins Lifestyle Choices, 9400 N. Wow! What a finish to the baseball major league regular season! Crucial games not decided until the final inning with two outs on the board. Exciting victories being celebrated in several cities. It reminded me of an incident that took place in 1968 when the Tigers won the World Series. I remember a human drama that unfolded there in the midst of that mass of humanity gathered at Michigan and Trumball. Moving through the crowd was a man who had not come for the usual reasons. He was not there to celebrate. He had not come as a curious spectator. He had not come to use the occasion to destroy or steal. He was not police. He moved through the crowd with burlap sacks in which to collect the bottles and cans which had begun to litter the city streets as early as the 4th inning. Scurrying like a busy worker ant, he made a rather sharp contrast to the other people filling the streets around him. As such he was quickly noticed by a group of revelers who had already drank more than most. The

revelers watched for a few moments and then began racing the man to his booty – grabbing the bottles and cans away from him. “Hey, dummy, this is a celebration. You have to cheer for the Tigers and do a little victory dance for us – celebrate and then maybe you have our cans and bottles.” They taunted and humiliated the man, forced him to cheer and dance and then allowed him to have the bottles and cans. Or in some instances still did not allow him to have the bottles and cans. One man and woman watched the unfolding scene in mild disgust. Then they went over to the man, greeting him with a warm smile – asking him why he was so anxious to have the bottles and cans – why he was willing to put up with so much for them. “I haven’t worked for seven months and can’t find a job anywhere. My little girl is having a birthday next week and, while my unemployment check and a part time job my wife was able to get have taken care of most of our basic necessities, there just isn’t any money to get my daughter a present. I hope to gather up enough bottles and cans (with their 10 cent deposit) to earn enough money for a gift for her.” Without another word, the man and woman called their three children together and began gathering bottles and cans. When they had gathered together too many for the man to carry, they filled the trunk of their car and soon drove the man and his bottles and cans to his very modest home a few blocks away.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Redskins take down Polar Bears Toledo By JOHN SCHAFFNER Publisher When it’s raining sideways and the wind is blowing 30 mph, you just know it is going to be a tough night for the offense. It is also the kind of night when turnovers happen so the team that takes advantage of the other team’s mistakes usually wins. Such was the case last Friday night at The Duck Pond in Castalia as the Port Clinton Redskins took advantage of Margaretta miscues to post a 33-6 win over the Polar Bears. “We had a couple of turnovers, but for the most part we took care of the ball,” Coach Toby Hammond said Monday. PC pretty much kept it on the ground and handily won the turnover battle. In one sequence, Redskin quarterback Addison Rospert threw an interception, then redeemed himself on the very next play picking off a Margaretta pass and setting up another Redskin score. It was definitely a night when defenses dominated. The Redskins were able to move the football on the ground as Diante Laurel rushed for 131 yards.

“Diante runs hard and is one of the strongest players in the weight room. We need to also give credit to our offensive line, especially in the second half,” said Hammond. In the second half, the Redskin defense dominated and in the fourth quarter, the offense turned the ball over to Cody Smith who wears No. 40 and runs a lot like Peyton Hillis. “Cody was a big part of our offense early in the season when Andrew (Leidheiser) had to play quarterback,” said Hammond. In one of his late runs, he rambled down inside the 10 leaving a number of would-be Polar Bear tacklers in his wake. He finished it off with a final burst to the end-zone for the Redskins’ final score. The Redskins play their final home game of the season Friday night against Sandusky St. Mary’s Central Catholic. Despite their getting pounded by Clyde last Saturday night 63-0, they are still 3-3 on the season. “Clyde makes everybody look bad,” said Hammond. “It all starts with their quarterback, Alex Guerra. Their offensive line is much improved and they are bigger than our

Port Clinton’s Cody Smith breaks tackles on the way to a big gain against Margaretta. guys. Defensively, they play a 3-3 which we don’t see a lot. They are the most improved team in the league.” Hammond is a legend at St. Mary’s, having led the Panthers for several years to the State Playoffs. But that was a long time ago. When asked if he felt strange coaching against his former team, Hammond answers “not anymore!”

The Redskins are now 4-2 and two more wins would give them their first winning season in over 20 years. Does that add any excitement? “We haven’t really thought about it,” said Hammond. “I hope we are just focusing on one game at a time.” At least the weather looks much better for Friday night at True Lay Stadium.

Rockets still undefeated in SBC By J. Patrick Eaken and Yaneek Smith While there may be some area running backs with more impressive statistics, none are more important to their respective team’s success than is Oak Har-

bor’s Mark Konieczny. Oak Harbor stayed perfect in the Sandusky Bay Conference with a 35-7 rout over visiting Edison Friday night. Konieczny ran for 148 yards on 18 carries (8.2 per carry) and

scored two touchdowns to lead the Rockets. That sent him over the 1,000 yard mark for the season. Konieczny has rushed for 1,063 yards on 147 carries (7.2 yards-per carry) and eight

touchdowns (one receiving) in just half a season. Being asked to replace star running back Jake Scott, an Alan Miller Jewelers Second-Team All-Press selection

By J. PATRICK EAKEN Danbury trailed just 13-8 at halftime, but the Toledo Christian Eagles took over in the second half to defeat the Lakers 3516 on the field turf at Perrysburg High School’s Steinecker Stadium. Danbury’s record evened at 3-3 overall and fell to 1-2 in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. TC improved to 2-4 overall and is also 1-2 in the TAAC. The Lakers still managed 336 yards of total offense, including 240 rushing and 36 passing, and had 11 first downs — seven rushing, three passing and one by penalty, but could only get two touchdowns. Quarterback Lucas Kennedy completed 8-of-21 passes for 96 yards, but he was intercepted twice. He also ran for 170 yards on 19 attempts, scoring one touchdown. Cody German had 63 yards rushing on four attempts and Taylon Molnar had five yards on two carries. Cory Schenk was Kennedy’s favorite receiver, catching four passes for 56 yards. Molnar had one catch for 21 yards and German had three catches for 19 yards, including a touchdown. Danbury will face Northwood this Friday at Biro Field

SPORTS ROCKETS from 1B from 2010 who rushed for 1,227 yards last year, Konieczny has answered the call, filling in nicely. What truly sets him apart from other running backs is the fact that he possesses the ability to “hit the home run” on every play and go the distance, making him a potential nightmare for defenses. “Anything can happen on any one play,” Konieczny said. But, like any good running back, Konieczny understands that it is the five men at the line of scrimmage who matter most. It is the linemen, but most especially the tight end, fullback and wide receivers that must block well for he and the offense to be successful. “They’ve done a phenomenal job,” said Konieczny of his linemen. “It makes my job so much easier when they can take care of the defensive line.” In fact, Konieczny’s performance has been a microcosm for how Oak Harbor’s season has gone. Quite simply, when he has a great performance, the team wins; when his performance has been good, but less than stellar, the team has struggled. In football, where it is the position players like the quarterback, running back and receivers who get all the accolades bestowed upon them, it is the men up front doing the dirty work that are the most important. Any coach will tell you that. The offensive line consists of left tackle Adam Losie (5-foot-9, 230 pounds), left guard Shaun Wahl (5-9, 180), center Allan Boss (5-11, 190), right guard Ryan Helle (5-11, 230) and right tackle Dalton Reau (6-1, 245) with Nate Seegard (6-0, 235) and Nick Easterwood (6-4, 290) seeing action as well. Konieczny also notes the contributions of the tight ends, Joey Mallernee and Zane Troknya, and fullbacks Alex Bergman and Mitch Hayslett, as does his head coach, Mike May. May talked about the importance of the wide receivers blocking down-

The Beacon

field and the tight ends and fullbacks sustaining their blocks to open holes in the running game. He also credits quarterback Brian Mallernee with having effectively run the offense this season. The “quarterback” of the offensive line is Boss, a three-year starter who is responsible for calling out the signals and audibles to his fellow linemen. “We’re starting to get better at knowing what each other is doing,” said Boss of the line, which has steadily improved as the season has progressed. “We’re starting to get a feel for one another and feeling our way around on the line.” Offensive line coach Scott Schulte notes just how important Boss’ performance is to the team. “As Allan Boss goes, so goes our offensive line,” Schulte said. When talking to players on the team about Schulte, it is obvious that the coach is well-respected throughout the program. When asked what message he tries to convey to the linemen, Schulte said, “For me, the two most important things are footwork and confidence (for the linemen). (Assistant coach) Doug Slagle and I try to get them to play hard and be sound with their techniques. We tell them that they have to work longer and harder than their opponents.” Konieczny wasn’t the only one getting into the act in the rout over Edison. Oak Harbor quarterback Brian Mallernee threw nine completions in 14 attempts for 123 yards and three touchdowns. The Rocket defense forced four turnovers, including interceptions by Mallernee, Kaleb Maquire, and Austin Wiegand. Mallernee had a 14-yard return and Maguire a 25-yard return. There’s a

Financial Focus

better

way to buy insurance.

Organizing your finances can pay off — in many ways A few years ago, the National Association of Professional Organizers designated the first week of October as Get Organized Week. And while you may have misplaced your notification of this event, it’s nonetheless a good time to see just how organized you are in the important areas of your life — such as your finances. You can organize your finances in two basic ways: by keeping track of where your various accounts are located and by consolidating your assets. Let’s look at both these areas. To begin with, you might think it’s no big deal to keep track of your financial accounts. After all, no one lets these accounts just slip away, does he? Actually, you might be surprised: At least $32 billion, and possibly much more, of “lost” property (savings, investments, retirement accounts and so on) are in the custody of state treasurers and other agencies, according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. How do people misplace these funds? They might move from a town and forget to close a bank account. Or they might leave a job and not realize they’ve left behind money in a 401(k). However they do it, it happens — but you don’t want it to happen to you. Fortunately, it’s not hard to keep tabs on your various accounts — you just need to make a list. Where do you keep your checking and savings accounts? Where are your investments held? Do you have a retirement plan, such as a 401(k) with your current employer? How about any retirement plans with former employers? If you have Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), do you keep them with multiple providers? By answering these questions, you can develop a comprehensive list of what you own and where it’s located. Of course, it’s a good idea to update this list periodically — at least once a year — to reflect any changes in your ownership. Knowing what you have will be helpful to you in evaluating your financial situation today. But if you want to help yourself make progress toward your goals for tomorrow, you’ll also want to consider another organizational technique: consolidating your assets. Specifically, if you have some stocks here, a couple of certificates of deposits (CDs) there and some IRAs at still another place, you might consider consolidating them with one financial services provider. With all your investments in one place, you can possibly reduce the fees and paperwork associated with maintaining your accounts.

You can buy your

insurance

from a stranger at

And when you eventually start taking withdrawals from your IRA and 401(k), you may find it easier to calculate these required distributions if they’re coming from just one provider, rather than multiple sources. But most importantly, when you consolidate your investments with one provider, you’ll find it easier to follow a single, unified investment strategy. A qualified financial advisor can look at all your assets and determine if you’ve got redundancies in your holdings and if you need to increase your diversification. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) Furthermore, once a financial advisor knows your situation, he or she can recommend strategies that are appropriate for your objectives, risk tolerance and time horizon. Get Organized Week lasts only seven days. But by using this time to begin organizing your finances, you could see benefits for years to come. nnnnn
