Feature film premiering in PC BY ANGIE ADAIR Editor For years there’s been talk of a movie theater in Port Clinton. Arguments abound about where it should go, how it will happen and when … if ever. But it turns out the city doesn’t need the traditional big screen and popcorn counter to draw a feature film premiere. “Forks Over Knives,” which opens nationally on March 11, is coming to town.

The advanced screening, sponsored locally by Rudder’s Market and Deli, is set for Aug. 28 at the Port Clinton High School Performing Arts Center. “It’s really an unbelievable opportunity for us,” said Key Pudelski, owner of the Catawba Island restaurant sponsor. “We are right up there with the big guys.” Other advanced screenings are set in bigger markets like Philadelphia and Las Vegas, and it’s thanks to Pudelski and summer-

resident Dr. Pam Popper that Port Clinton joined the ranks. The doctor, who owns a cottage at Gem Beach, has been a customer at Rudder’s for years and even treated her now-friend Pudelski. Popper is one of the experts in the film and worked as a factchecker. “I had to make sure all statements had a research study to back it up,” Popper said.

Plane crashes into Lake Erie Miller Ferry staff rescues crash victims By ANGIE ADAIR Editor Four people in a single-engine plane crashed into Lake Erie Friday morning and amazingly, no one was hurt. The engine died on the Cessna as pilot Mark Neal, of Canton, Mich., neared the island and a water landing was the only option. The Miller Ferry was departing from the dock en route to Catawba Island when the plane hit the water. Witnesses aboard the boat said they were confused at first. “We were watching the plane fly in and thought it was just trying to land,” said Stephen Reglow, 18, of Buffalo, N.Y., who was leaving the island after a weeklong staff retreat for The Chapel at CrossPoint in Getzville, N.Y. Then the plane crashed into the water in front of him. Reglow said the wings broke and the windshield was smashed on impact. “We just gathered around and started to pray,” said Leslie Cook, 26, also a part of the church group. Reglow said they could see the four passengers emerge from the wreckage and the captain of the ferry pulled the boat up to rescue the crash victims. The two men and two women aboard the plane were pulled onto the boat. “The ferry staff did an amazing job,” Reglow said. “We pulled them onto the ferry and dropped them off.” Neal, along with Detroit-area

Miller Ferry passenger Jon Cook, who was with a church group returning from a staff retreat at Putin-Bay, took this photo Friday shortly after a Cessna 210 crashed into Lake Erie. residents Ashley Braunstein, 21, Michael Reddy, 67, and Amber McClure, 21, were taken

to shore where EMS and fire crews were already waiting. Petty Officer Kelley said the call

came into the Lakeside-Marblehead Coast Guard Station at 11:40 a.m.

LA cast in town for show BY TIA WOODEL Editorial Intern After eight years of dinner theater, the cast for the upcoming play “Polyester The Musical” has gone Hollywood. Brenda BouSliman got in contact with Phil Olsen, the writer of the play, and arranged for the Los Angeles professional cast to come to Port Clinton and perform. Olsen originally wanted to play football and signed with the Chicago Bears, but after things didn’t work out he decided to pursue a different career. He started by writing sketch comedies in Tampa, Fla., and now has made his way to having 10 published plays including “Polyester The Musical.” Jim Staahl, one of the cast members, began performing in plays in high school, but only for fun. After joining Second City in Chicago during college, he decided to pursue an acting and writing career. He has worked with stars including Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, Tina Turner and Mike Myers. Staahl has performed on television shows such as Mork and Mindy and written for television as well. Olsen and Staahl are currently staying in Port Clinton until Aug. 23 or 24. Until the production begins, Olsen and Staahl have been enjoying visiting local spots such as Cedar Point, Lakeside and a local karaoke bar. According to them, this is the first time they have been to such a small town for a production and are extremely excited. “The cast has great talent. They

Soldiers get R&R at PIB John Davenport, Lt. Col. He will be taking them over to Put-in-Bay on Saturday and the group will march into the village. That ought to be a sight to see! Sound Off Remembering a friend Elisabeth Kelbley wrote this tribute to family friend Linda Kummero for a high school class in March of 2006. Kummero died July 29 after a battle with cancer. Ever met someone who can make heads turn by entering a room? Or can smile and have everyone else smiling too? A person who just lights up a room with their presence? Maybe a person who knows what to say to make anyone laugh? One who lives with a passion everyday because tomorrow may never come? Someone who knows to never take anything for granted? A person who knows that death is near but chooses to live? Ever met anyone with one of these traits? I have met someone with all these qualities and many more.

Linda came into my life as a friend of my mother. For four summers now I have gone to the Cliffs on Catawba Island and visited her for few days. Each time I see her, I laugh harder than before and learn something new. Linda has taught me many life lessons without her even realizing it. She teaches through her actions, how she lives her life and how she views her life. She speaks her mind about everything. The truth is never too harsh for her. Linda is never afraid of becoming to close to someone new. When I first met her, she acted as if I had known her all my life. She spoke freely about her cancer and treated me as a friend rather then a child. She has been dealt several hardships in her life. Linda has cancer. Some days she seems perfectly healthy, while other days the illness brings her down. Linda is one of the strongest women I have ever met. Her presence can be felt because when she is in a room she is the center of attention. If Linda is not in the room feeling the same, her sense of humor and warm spirit are missed. My first memory of her is the evening we went swimming. It was a chilly summer night when I first arrived at the Cliffs. I was so eager to go swimming; I asked around if anyone would come with me. Everyone replied the same, “It’s too cold. Tomorrow we will go.” Linda overheard me asking and insisted she would take me down to the lake. Everyone discouraged Linda from going because she had been weak from treatment. We would have to climb down a steep hill with rocks to even reach the beach. Linda was upset with everyone doubting her, so she got her things ready quickly. With towel in hand, she and I walked down to the lake. The determination in her is so strong. Linda understood it would be difficult but wanted to at least try. As we approached the hill I could feel the tension grow. I walked down the hill with ease and looked back to help

Linda, but I found her sitting and sliding down the hill on her bottom. While sliding down she began laughing. I’m not sure if she was laughing at the fact that she was a grown woman sliding down a hill on her bottom or laughing at everyone doubting her. We began to walk closer to the water; I could feel the cool breeze off the water. I started to doubt whether I wanted to actually go in. I glanced over at Linda who was already close to the edge. We walked slowly into the brisk water side by side, both smiling and saying how crazy we must be for going swimming. Once in the water, Linda laid on her back, weightless, looking up at the sky. Time seemed to have stopped. It is strange to think going swimming is a milestone for someone because it is a simple task, but for Linda it was important. It was important because she knew that it could have been her last time swimming. We began to talk about how much we enjoyed swimming and how the water makes us felt weightless. It was on that summer night, I knew Linda was going to impact my life. As we walked out of the water and wrapped ourselves in towels, Linda thanked me. At the time I didn’t understand why she was thanking me. She was the one who came with me. I should be thanking her. Looking back now I feel she was thanking me for pushing her. In one night of swimming I had learned more than some people learn in a year. Linda taught me to live in the present, not in the future because she understood she may never have the chance to go swimming again. She believed in herself when others doubted. Linda also taught me to enjoy the simple things, like swimming. Take in life and not pass through it. Another time I was with Linda, it was again an evening. But this time I was with my mother, Connie, who is my mother’s friend, and Linda. We were all sitting outside watching the waves crash on the rocks. As I sat back and listened to my mother, Connie and Linda talk about everything and anything, I realized how happy Linda was. She may have a deadly disease but never feels sorry for herself. She has loving children, friends who love her and her life to be thankful for. Linda loved to tell stories, sometimes my mother felt that some stories I should not hear, but Linda told them anyways. In this way, I am grateful that Linda treated me as a person and didn’t look upon me as a child. She respected me as I did her. Every story she told, she could find some way to make it hilarious. In even a simple story she could find humor. Linda could laugh at herself and make others laugh. That was one of her gifts, the ability to make others smile. Why does something traumatic have to happen before people learn how to live? With Linda, cancer has changed her way of life, how she thinks, the way she speaks so freely, her ability to laugh, taking each day as if it truly was her last and becoming happy with who she is. I have learned many life lessons from Linda, but I am in fear that I will not apply these lessons until something traumatic happens to me. Next summer I am looking forward to being with Linda. In the fall she traveled to Spain, and I know she will have many stories to tell me of her trip. I am so fortunate to have met Linda. She has impacted my life in ways no other will, and she does not even realize it. Linda is the woman I want to be.

Fish Ohio

I read Dick Martin’s commentary about Fish Ohio Day. I must correct his statement that the Visitors Bureau always hosted this. In the late ‘70s it was “Legislator’s Day” held at Channel Grove Marina by the Lake Erie Sports Fishermen. It was intended to teach legislators and outdoors writers what a resource we have in the Lake Erie walleye by those who had hands on experience. As time went along, the name was changed to “Governor’s Day,” to honor Gov. Celest for proclaiming the walleye a game fish and taking it out of the commercial nets. As time went along, this became a free day of fishing. They did, however finally lower the minimum size limit to 15” and lowered the spring spawning season to a threebag limit, then increased it to four, due to some charter captains’ pressure. Unfortunately, it is now a PR blitz by the DOW/ODNR and the LECBA to generate more money for non-resident licenses and to book more fishing charters. Conservation is not on the screen. The handwriting is on the wall that we will have reduced bag limits next year until we get down to the level of the spring spawning levels of four or maybe three. Why should the summer fishermen, from Ohio, pay this price so nonOhio fishermen destroy our spawning fish. This is nothing more than abortion of our walleye future. In summery, April was a slaughter of our spawning walleye. May, you were lucky to get two fish per paying customer. June, maybe you might get three per customer, maybe four. July, you were still in the three to four range with a few undersized 1- and 2-year-olds. Some charters even came in skunked. There were quite a few cancellations this year, and the rebookings for next year have been slim. In my opinion, it will take about three years of a closed spawning season to let us call our area, again, the “Walleye Capitol of the World.” We need the same kind of leadership we had when Jim Fofrich and Jim Feltman were alive. Bless them. Tony Novak Marblehead

Duez to lead United Way effort PORT CLINTON — United Way in Ottawa County is proud to announce that Ann Duez, co-owner of the Victorian Inn Bed and Breakfast, will be chairwoman of the 2010 Ottawa County United Way campaign. “We are absolutely thrilled to have Ann on board,” said Chris Galvin, director of United Way in Ottawa County. “Her knowledge of United Way, our community and the local economy will be a tremendous asset during the fall campaign.” Duez is a past president of the Marblehead Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Ottawa County Regional Welcome Center Shores and Islands (west) and a past United Way Campaign team member. She has also been a part of Leader-

ship Ottawa County and is a member of Port Clinton Professional Business Women. Duez will be working with United Way staff and volunteers to plan and execute a successful 2010 campaign. “I am looking forward to tapping the generosity of our communities from Genoa to the islands,” Duez said. “Just as United Way stepped up and responded to the tornadoes of June 5, they continue to step up in very tangible ways across our community and I look forward to being a part of that.” For the third consecutive year, the centerpiece of the fall campaign will be Gem Beach Rocks!, a festive event at Gem Beach on Catawba Island where attendees enjoy all-day live entertainment, beverages and food. The

event is noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18. Learn more or purchase tickets at www.gembeachrocks.com. For more about United Way, visit www.unitedwayottawacounty. org.

FILM from 1A

Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a top surgeon and head of the Breast Cancer Task Force at the Cleveland Clinic, each began noticing that some of the diseases common in Americans — diabetes, cancer, autoimmune diseases — were virtually unknown in other parts of the world. “At great professional risks to themselves, they started this research,” said Popper. According to forksoverknives.com: “Their research led them to a startling conclusion: degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost always be prevented — and in many cases reversed — by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet.” Popper said that interwoven into the doctors’ journey is stories of patients. “They don’t get treated for their

diabetes, they don’t have it anymore,” she said. “The diet is making us sick; the right diet will make us better.” So what is the “right” diet? According to Popper, a better way to eat follows a more Asian-style of eating where meat is more like a condiment. Most of our nourishment should come from fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. “I don’t want to live in a world where there isn’t chocolate, but it’s a treat, not lunch,” she said. “I have full confidence that eventually this story will be known by everybody.” Popper, a naturopath, will conduct a question-and-answer session after the Aug. 28 screening. For more about the film, visit www. forksoverknives.com. For more about the diet Popper proposes, visit www. wellnessforum.com.

The film, according to its website, “examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods.” The idea of “Forks Over Knives” is if your fork does the right thing, you can avoid going under the knife. “If you take a look a what’s going on in our country today … I think the biggest threat to our future is this health care problem,” said Popper. The storyline follows the journeys of two doctors and researchers who, according to Popper, were raised in quite similar and very traditional farm backgrounds. Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a nutritional scientist at Cornell University, and

COMMENTARY

The Beacon By VIRGINIA PARK

Beacon Bits

An old idea that’s come around again

Here’s a good idea. Catch rainwater in a rain barrel and then save the water for use in your lawn and garden. It will save you money and an added bonus is that the pure water is good for your plants. You can catch water in a barrel whenever it rains. Run-off from your roof through the eaves and downspouts can be diverted into the barrel. If you elevate the barrel off the ground you can attach a hose to it and there will be enough pressure to water your grounds through a spigot in the barrel. That’s easier than dipping it from the barrel and then carrying the water to

where it is needed. Several websites offer information about building the barrels and sometimes hands-on workshops are offered locally to make them. Ready-made varieties may also be purchased. Years ago I collected rainwater off my house roof, ran it through a homemade filtration system and into the cistern. This worked very well but it did require frequent cleaning of the cistern — an absolutely terrible job — to keep the water safe for human consumption. However water collected in rain barrels is not to be used for drinking or a few other purposes. Needless to say, you can collect water this way only when it rains. That hasn’t happened a lot this year, or so it seems. Just the same, 419-798-9600 or 419-621-3992 I’d like to try collecting waWe put the TLC into your event! ter again. Are you keeping cool? My electric bill has gone way up and that’s because my air conditioner has had a real workout this summer. There have been some welcome cool spells and during those it felt wonderful to open the house, both windows and doors, and let the breezes float through. Otherwise the house has been closed up tight as a drum. It would be nice to be

able to tolerate the heat better, as we did in years gone by. But back then nothing was air-conditioned and if it got hot in the summer you just tried to grin and bear it. Nowadays houses, offices, stores and other places are very cool and when you leave those spots to go outdoors it sometimes makes you gasp for air or even makes you feel half-sick. So a long time ago I put air conditioning in my house, largely in deference to the fact that I worked in air conditioning nearly all day long and could barely stand the heat in the evenings. I enjoy the comfort of it but wish it wasn’t so expensive. nnn

Don and Joyce Stoddard of Memphis, Tenn., called this week. These great folks formerly lived in Port Clinton and are now enjoying nearly full retirement. Joyce is retired from her work as a department head in a local upscale store there. Don still does a bit of accounting work at home after retiring from his job with a very large national credit union. The Stoddards love the leisure of retirement and have been traveling quite a lot. On the day they called they were getting ready to take off on an overnight jaunt to visit a couple of favorite places a little further south to celebrate Don’s birthday. nnn

ing ideas gleaned from other sources. • Help other people. Spend some time helping someone. Remember that a “tithe” is not only giving money; it is also giving a portion of your time, energy and knowledge. • View events — even troubling ones – as opportunities. Learn and grow from them. • Spend at least a half hour a day in quiet reflective time and consider adding meditation to your schedule. • Participate in a traditional religious activity as a regular habit and practice. • Volunteer for community events, civic organizations or social service agencies. • Try not to judge people or situations and learn to accept peoples’ differences. • Be open to learning — no matter how old you are. • Be productive in the work you do for a livelihood. Think about the product you make, the services you provide and reflect on the fact that you are making a contribution to the world by the work that you do daily. • Love your community. See its good attributes. Think how to change its deficiencies. • Take care of your physical, emotional and mental health. • Learn from the mistakes of others and avoid these errors in your own life. You’ll save yourself a lot of stress and trouble. • Contribute to good causes. • Be useful but don’t overextend yourself so badly that you will be exhausted. • Try not to hate anyone. If you let hate in, it swallows you up. If there is someone you really dislike, get away from that person and whatever the situation is that has arisen. • Remember that your own health is of primary importance. Take care of yourself first and then you will be able to help others. nnn

David Gobble, PhD, writing in the Well Workplace newsletter, states that people who have meaning and purpose in their lives “generally have better health, recover quicker from illnesses and typically live longer.” He goes on to say that people in traditional religious groups who attend services regularly do have a well-developed “support system” in place through the people in the church. Such support systems are very helpful not only on a dayto-day basis but also in times of trouble or crisis. The newsletter also showed a list of ways to develop meaning and/or purpose in one’s life. I am paraphrasing some of them here, adding my own thoughts and includ-

Local artist to share her life and work The community is invited to meet a local artist whose love of nature is emulated in her work. A “Summer Artist Retrospective,” featuring Virgina Zafirau, will be 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 22 in the Island House lobby and meeting room. The event is hosted by the Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council. Community members are invited to meet the artist, view her work and learn more about her as an artist and person at this free event. Cocktails and other refreshments can be purchased through the Island House. Zafirau is a lover of nature, as is evident in her artwork, a devout mother and was a devout wife to husband Sam. She is known and loved by many people locally and beyond, and has sung in the church choir at Immaculate Conception Church. She is not only an artist but a poet and is famous for her lemon cookies. The artist started painting when she was a teenager. In fact, there will be some paintings at Sunday’s show that Zafirau did when she was 16. She has made art in several mediums, however, is most wellknown for her watercolors of nature. She often pairs her original, hand-written poetry with her watercolors. “I am constantly intrigued by the ever changing patterns of the sea, sky and liv-

ing things. In my paintings, I try to catch them at a magical moment in time — like stopping a movie at a particularly beautiful or interesting frame to enjoy it again and again. I never quite succeed,” the artist says. For information, contact Sarah Pietrykowski at sarah@rothinsurance.com; or 419-705-3730.

Clydesdales coming back to the bay SOUTH BASS ISLAND — Maple City Ice, the local Anheuser-Busch Distributor, is bringing the company’s iconic Clydesdale team back to Put-in-Bay on Saturday, Aug. 28. Joel Hipp, whose family owns the Norwalk-based company, said the Clydesdales will set up around 11 a.m. in McCann Field on Toledo Avenue, near downtown and the horses will parade around the island about 1 p.m. “We put in for them every year,” said Hipp, who sponsored a Clydesdales visit in 2002. “There are four teams that travel the states and its very competitive trying to secure a visit.” Farmers in the 19th century, living along the banks of the River Clyde in Lanarkshire, Scotland, bred the Great Flemish Horse, the grand-daddy of the Clydesdale. Canadians of Scottish decent brought the first Clydesdales to the United States in the mid-1800s. Today the draft horses are bred mainly for show. The Clydesdales have been part of Anheuser-Busch history since 1933 when a team delivered the first post-Prohibition beer brewed in St. Louis. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported in April that the company charges about $2,000 per day for appearances to offset the estimated $8,000 a day it costs them to

keep the Clydesdales on the road. Each hitch team consists of eight horses. Each horse averages 6 feet tall and 2,000 pounds, eats 50 to 60 pounds of hay, 20 to 25 quarts of whole grains and drinks 30 gallons of water per day. A local Budweiser distributor must sponsor a week-long visit of the team and two days of the visit are set aside for the draft horses to rest. Each team of horses has its own team of handlers traveling with them who groom and handle the animals as well as water and feed them. “I got a call two weeks ago that we had a team traveling through the area and they had an opening,” Hipp said. “We’re very excited to be bringing the Clydesdales to Put-in-Bay again.” Hipp said the visit is in conjunction with Miller Boat Line. The Miller Ferry will carry the Clydesdales’ semi-tractor and trailer and any support vehicles to and from the island for free. “The island community has been very supportive of our company for many years,” Hipp said, “and we’re happy to be able to share the Clydesdales with them.” For information about other island events, visit the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau’s website at www.visitputinbay.com.

There will even be a chance to win an overnight stay at Sawmill Creek Resort at the Buffalo Wild Wings/WKFM chicken wing eating contest on Saturday. Admission will be $9; children 12 and younger will get in free. The show will be open noon to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Cedar Point in-water boat show is biggest on Great Lakes SANDUSKY — Boating is big in the Lake Erie Islands region — the Ohio counties of Erie, Ottawa and Huron boast some of the highest densities of boats per acre of water in the entire Midwest — and more than 50 of the area’s dealers and marine businesses will try to capitalize on its popularity at the North American In-Water Boat Show presented by Toyota Trucks, Sept. 15-19 at Cedar Point. The event has grown considerably since it was first held in 1973 and will be the largest in-water boat show on the Great Lakes this year. All the boats will be open for boarding on interconnected docks, so visitors will be able to walk out on the water, get a drink at the Party Barge and even use the floating restrooms before returning to land. “The timing and location are perfect,” said show manager Ken Alvey. “When the boating season starts to wrap up around

Goodwill, Family Circle team up for clothing drive SANDUSKY — Family Circle magazine and Goodwill Industries are teaming up again for a back-toschool clothing drive now through Sept. 30. The goal is to encourage donations to Goodwill of gently used clothing that can help families, especially those experiencing employment challenges, stretch their household budgets. Another benefit is proceeds from the sale of such items will support Goodwill’s mission to provide

employment programs for the disabled and disadvantaged. Any type of clothing can be donated, but during the drive school apparel and uniforms are the priority. Some public school districts, like Fremont and Sandusky, have a student uniform requirement. Donations can be taken to any of these area Goodwill stores: Bellevue, 855 W. Main St.; Fremont, 1040 Oak Harbor Road; Huron, 422 Cleveland Road E.; Norwalk, 295 Milan

Ave.; Port Clinton, 205 S.E. Catawba Road; Sandusky, 924 E. Perkins Ave. and Willard, 108 Blossom Centre. According to Family Circle, readers nationwide donated some 11 million pounds of clothing last year during the Goodwill drive. Additional information about this year’s drive will appear in the magazine’s September issue, which is dedicated to back-to-school.

Sign up under way for farm tire recycling The agricultural community will once again have an opportunity to recycle unwanted farm tires through a collection sponsored by the Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca Joint Solid Waste District. The event will be held at the Sandusky County Fairgrounds in Fremont at the north parking lot. This collection is open to farm owners, operators and residents in the three-county area (including Bellevue and Fostoria residents). Absolutely no dealers or agribusinesses will be permitted. Registration — which is required to participate — ends at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27. Prior to calling, know the number of tires by type/size that you would like to recycle. When the office is contacted, a representative from the district will provide you with a time for delivering your tires and confirm the cost based on the quantity and diameter of tires being recycled. It is important that all participants bring proof of residency (driver’s license) to the collection site. This will verify your registration and speed the process of generating a receipt for your records. Pre-register by calling the district’s main office at 419-334-7222 or toll free at 1-888-850-7224. Tires up to 36 inches, including implement tires, wagon tires, truck tires, skid loader tires, most front tires and four-wheeler tires will be accepted at a cost of $1 per tire. The district will accept farm tires 37 inches to 60 inches (most rear tractor tires) at $10 per tire. Farm tires 61” and larger, including large rear tractor tires and all combine tires (regardless of diameter), will also be accepted at $15 per tire. Tires can be recycled and used to make tire rings used as construction barrel weights or to hold down plastic covers or tarps. Recycled tires can also become crumb rubber, a material used in artificial turf on athletic fields. Additional finished products from tires include asphalt rubber used in road surfaces, tire turf used to make playground surfacing, rubber rock (an aggregate alternative) and tire derived fuel (a source of energy used in power plants).

Back to school for teachers in the Port Clinton City School District

Danbury open house cookout

Even though students in the Port Clinton City School District don’t start school until Aug. 24, their teachers are already in class this summer. Port Clinton City School District is implementing a new intervention program in grades K-8 this fall. The district will also be using AIMSweb, a new computer based testing program, to monitor the progress of students. Port Clinton teachers have been attending various training sessions the past two weeks to learn about both new programs. Jack Nitz, director of curriculum, explained the purpose of the AIMSweb testing is to: “Monitor the progress of our students so that we can provide timely additional support to help students who may be falling behind their classmates in key subject areas.” Michael Jenkins, Principal of Jefferson Elementary School, is coordinating the implementation of the program. One day of professional development was provided for elementary and middle school principals and the K-8 teachers to introduce the program. AIMSweb will replace the NWEA testing formerly utilized by the district to measure student progress. The Response to Intervention Program required an additional day of training for teachers in grades K-8. “Response to Intervention is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs,” according to the National Center on

Champions for Children is a licensed after school program designed for families of the Port Clinton School District in grades kindergarten through sixth. Children who participate choose from a wide range of activities including sports, arts and crafts, games, puzzles, educational materials, computers and movies. A special time is set aside for homework, reading or quiet academic ac-

tivities. Weekly enrichment programs, taught by community members, are also available. Some examples include Spanish lessons, hands-on science, yoga, cooperation, self-esteem and much more. Champions for Children is available at Bataan and Jefferson elementary schools on school days until 6 p.m. Full-time or part-time enrollment is available and qualifying families may apply for financial assistance. The new morning program will be available at Bataan Memorial Elementary School for students in grades kindergarten through fifth beginning at 7 a.m. (Jefferson stu-

dents will board the bus at 7:45 to Jefferson). The program will also be available when school is delayed until 10 a.m. If the school delay turns into a school closing, children can stay until 10:30 a.m. Registration forms must be completed and submitted prior to Aug. 23 for children to attend the after-school program on the first day of school. Bay Point celebrates new Sunset Cove MARBLEHEAD — Bay Point Resort & Marina celebrated the grand opening of Sunset Cove, a 35-villa waterfront subdivision, Saturday at the Bay Point sales center. The presentation was followed by an opportunity for guests to speak with the Bay Point and Sunset Cove developer, designers, builders and sales staff. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments were served and guests were given the opportunity to tour a recently completed model villa. The grand opening of Sunset Cove comes on the heels of a successful sales season for Bay Point’s other residential community, Bay Point Shores, where more than 75 percent of the lots have been

sold. Garnering the same level of interest, Bay Point is planning to meet the demand by adding an additional 16 villas, scheduled to be approved this fall. “We are extremely excited to be moving forward with the Sunset Cove phase of the development, said John T. Murphy, principal of Bay Point Development Partners, LLC. “With incredible amenities to complement this residential development, including one of the largest marinas in the Great Lakes and picturesque grounds, Bay Point Resort & Marina is becoming one of the most desirable vacation destinations in the Midwest. With units starting at $379,900, Sunset Cove offers two differ-

ent villa models and sizes: 1,760 square feet and 1,846 square feet. Designed and constructed by family-owned Sandvick Builders, the two-story villas offer open floor plans, and homeowners have access to a variety of amenities such as a full-service marina and 9-hole golf course. Next spring, Bay Point will open its new waterfront clubhouse and pool exclusively for Sunset Cove and Bay Point Shores residents. Bay Point Resort & Marina is located at 10948 E. Bayshore Road, approximately 6 miles from Ohio 2 at the Lakeside Marblehead 269 exit. For information on the grand opening, call Ellen Dress at 419-798-2222 or 419-341-9578 or email at ecdress@mbres.com.

Can you save for retirement and college? As another school year approaches, you may be thinking about the day in which you’ll be sending your children off to college. Can you afford to help them pay for school while still saving for your own retirement? There are many strategies to explore when saving for your retirement and your child’s education. To implement the right mix of options, it’s important to discuss your situation with a professional financial advisor, but here are some options to consider: • Contribute to your 401(k). Since many people don’t have unlimited funds available to save for retirement and college, it’s important to get the most

mileage possible from the money invested. Try to utilize the taxadvantaged retirement accounts available to you. For starters, contribute as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. Not only can your earnings grow on a tax-deferred basis, but your contributions are generally made with pretax dollars, so the more you contribute, the lower your annual taxable income — which, in turn, could give you more disposable income to invest for college. In 2010, you can contribute up to $16,500 to your 401(k), or $22,000 if you’re 50 or older. • Fund your IRA. Depending on your income level, your

contributions to a traditional IRA may also lower your taxable income, again potentially freeing up resources for college. Plus, your earnings can grow tax deferred. If you qualify for a Roth IRA, your contributions are not tax-deductible, but your earnings grow tax free. Withdrawals are also tax-free, provided you’ve held your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least age 59½. Also, you can withdraw Roth IRA contributions without paying taxes (since you’ve already been taxed on this money), so you could use these funds, if necessary, to help pay for college costs, although ideally you’d like to leave your account untouched until you retire. If eligible, you

can contribute up to $5,000 to your traditional or Roth IRA in 2010, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. • Open a 529 college savings plan. Contributions to a 529 plan are made with after-tax dollars. However, when you contribute to a 529 plan, your earnings grow tax free. Withdrawals are also tax-free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses. (Withdrawals for expenses other than qualified higher education expenditures may be subject to federal and state taxes plus a 10% penalty.) Furthermore, 529 plan contributions may be eligible for a state tax deduction or credit in certain states for residents who

participate in their own state’s plan. Also, the lifetime contribution limits for 529 plans are quite generous, and you can gift $13,000 per year, per beneficiary, without incurring gift taxes. To make sure you understand the tax ramifications of a 529 plan, you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor. It may not be easy to put away as much as we’d like for retirement and college. But you do have some attractive savings and investment options. Don’t delay, because when saving for any goal, time is a great ally. ■■■

Tibbels offers USA Fuel Service Jack Tibbels, owner of Tibbels Marina in Marblehead, has been an advocate for clean Lake Erie waters and the preservation of the Lake Erie fishing industry for more than 70 years. Throughout his life, he has experienced many engine performance problems both with his own charter fishing fleet, as well as with his clients’ boats. Recently, Tibbels found a solution to some of these engine performance issues in USA Fuel Service, a Florida-based fuel purifying company. With USA Fuel Service, Tibbels provides certified fuel testing and complete on-site mobile fuel purify-

ing and tank cleaning. One of Tibbels’ recent customers had an issue with the diesel engine on his 32-foot Carver only performing at 50 percent of its normal acceleration and producing a lot of black smoke. In this situation it was necessary for Tibbels USA Fuel Service to perform an onsite fuel purifying and tank cleaning procedure. This procedure involves running the fuel through multiple filters and the addition of the fuel additive DESL SHOK to stabilize the fuel, lubricate the engine and absorb water, all the while saving 80 percent to 90 percent of the

Deadlines set for boating grants COLUMBUS — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Watercraft will award more than $1.3 million in grant funding next year to local communities throughout the state. Eligible activities include boating education and enforcement programs and boating access facility improvements. Sept. 1 is the deadline to submit applications to receive funding in 2011 through the Emergency Boating Access Program. This program may provide up to 100 percent funding assistance to eligible political subdivisions and state/federal government agencies for minor emergency repairs to existing boating access facilities in Ohio. Approximately $375,000 is expected to be awarded through this program in 2011.The maximum amount that can be applied for is $20,000

per project. All funded projects must be open and accessible to the general boating public. Projects sponsored by private individuals, clubs or associations on lands they control do not qualify for the program and will not be considered. A deadline of Oct. 1 is set for submitting applications to receive funding through the Boating Safety Education Grant Program. More than $360,000 is expected to be awarded for local community boating safety education programs in 2011. Grants carry a minimum local cost share of 25 percent of total program costs. Eligible applicants to receive these grants awards include political subdivisions at all levels, conservancy districts, statesupported school systems, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadrons and 501 C-3

Grant awards of up to $35,000 each may be awarded on a local cost-share basis with successful applicants providing a match of at least 25 percent of their total marine patrol program costs. This year’s awards ranged from $6,716 to $32,000. Applications forms and additional information on the grant programs offered through the Division of Watercraft are available online at www.ohiodnr.com/ watercraft.

COLUMBUS — The Castalia State Fish Hatchery is closed to visitors and tour groups through Sept. 11, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The closure is necessary to ensure public safety during the construction phase of a new trout production building, which will increase trout rearing capacity at the facility. Castalia Trout Fishing Lottery permit holders still have access to Cold Creek on their assigned fishing date throughout the facility closure.

COLUMBUS — More than 370 permits are available to hunters wishing to hunt ducks and geese from a blind at an Ohio State Park lake this waterfowl hunting season. A lottery drawing for the permits will be held at 17 state parks and two wildlife areas the morning of Saturday, Aug. 21. Participating state parks include Portage Lakes and West Branch in northeast Ohio; East Harbor, Indian Lake, Kiser Lake and Lake Loramie in northwest Ohio; Buck Creek, Caesar Creek, Cowan Lake, East Fork, Hueston Woods, and Rocky Fork in southwest Ohio; and Alum Creek, A.W. Marion, Buckeye Lake, Deer Creek, and Delaware in central Ohio. Interested applicants must appear in person at a participating state park office with proof of a 2010 Ohio hunting license, state wetlands stamp endorsement in the applicant’s name and a signed 2010 or 2009 federal duck stamp. Applicants under the age of 18 are encouraged to have a parent

or legal guardian present to sign the permit contract. Applications will be taken beginning at 7:30 a.m. at most parks, with the lottery drawings at 8 a.m. at the park office, unless otherwise noted in the listing below. Each hunter can apply for only one duck blind permit and no one can apply or draw for another person. There is a $50 nonrefundable permit fee for the state park lottery winners. Most locations accept cash, checks or credit cards for payment, except for Portage Lakes where payment is by cash or check only. Lottery winners have 45 days to construct their blinds and all blinds must be dismantled by March 15. Information on waterfowl hunting seasons, locations and restrictions will be discussed by park staff and wildlife officers during the lotteries. For general information about hunting seasons and regulations, call 1-800-WILDLIFE or visit www. ohiodnr.com/wildlife.

Redskins look to winning season

OTTAWA SOIL & WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT

A Day on the Wild Side Kids get back to nature at Winous Point Winous Point Marsh Conservancy and the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District hosted 38 youth in and around Ottawa County for the first “A Day on the Wild Side” event. Those attending had the opportunity to: learn about invasive species, trapping, marsh management and the importance of habitat. They also had a chance to do various hands on activities such as: building a wood duck box, bird banding and releasing, shooting, archery, going out in a “punt” boat (used for hunting) and water quality testing. A special treat was when Fred Zink from Zink Calls dropped by to teach the kids how to use a duck call, which each participant received. “To have all these ‘partners’ come together to put this event on and then see these kids having a blast and learning about wildlife and our natural resources is priceless,” said Carol Benner of the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District. The OSWCD and Winous Point Marsh Conservancy thank the following for their help: Jeff Finn, Mark Witt, Dennis Clement, John Simpson, Opie Roher, Jeff Miller, Fred Zink, Jim Schott, Tom Bartlett, Paul

Winning and Port Clinton girls’ tennis have become synonymous over the years, and 2010 looks to be another winning and possibly championship season for Coach Jim Greer and his charges. They have won 4 consecutive SBC titles and 8 out of the last 9. However, last year may be a hard act to follow. In 2009, the Lady Redskin tennis team went 19-1 and were ranked 6th in Ohio in Division II, the fourth year in a row they were ranked in the top 10. They return no less than 7 letter winners from last season, led by senior Aubrey Gillman and junior Chelsea Beck, both of whom earned numerous honors last year, including second team all Ohio honors. Other returners include juniors Rachael Szabo,, Samantha Griffin, Haley DeLeon and Amber Peto. One promising sophomore also returns in Katie Schroeder. Aubrey Gillman, Chelsea Beck, Racchael Szabo and Samantha Griffin are all on track to record over 100 wins in their high school careers. The team did suffer

Fleming, Crystal Dymond, Joe Uhinck, Tyler Weaver, Derek Benner, Steve Brent, Tom Kashmer, Kara Schwanger, Adam Saylor, Aaron Philips and Steve Duniluk, Laura Jones, Tim Baldwin (WildOhio), D’arcy Egan and James Proffitt for media coverage. Sponsors of the event include: Delta Waterfowl, Jeff Hayman Excavating of Tiffin, Allied Waste Services, Duck Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Zink Calls, Ohio Decoy Collectors and Carvers Association, US Fish & Wildlife — Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, Ohio EPA, Ohio Waterfowl Association and ODNR Division of Wildlife (Step Outside Grant).

Revolution3 is hosting a half-distance and full-distance triathlon on Sunday, Sept. 12, at Cedar Point. Athletes will be competing up to 17 hours by swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles and running a full marathon of 26.2 miles. More than 1,000 athletes will be arriving from all over the globe. Pro-triathletes and amateurs alike will be competing for $150,000 in total cash prizes. The REVOLUTION3 Triathlon race series was created to change the way athletes, family members and spectators view and participate in triathlons of all distances. “One of our immediate goals is to make triathlons a more interactive, enjoyable experience for spectators by providing fun activities for children and family members during the race,” states Charlie Patten, president of Rev3. In addition to striving to make triathlon a familyfriendly spectator sport, Revolution3 will contribute $10 of every race entry fee back to Ohio local charities and the community as a whole. For information, contact Eric Opdyke, Rev3 Cedar Point race director, at 203-981-6340 or eric@rev3tri.com.

a pair of losses via graduation in Jordan Van Winkel and Michele Hablitzel. Past the top group, the cupboard is hardly bare for Coach Greer. Incoming freshmen Morgan McGlothlin and Tiffany Colston are likely to see varsity action, as are juniors Haley Snider and Sessely Schlipf. You can also add sophomore Lexi Fodor to that group. The PC ladies got their first win of the season on Monday with a 5-0 victory over Sylvania Southview, despite some first match jitters. Coach Jim Greer, entering his 10th season as girls’ tennis coach, says several contributing factors have helped make the PC program one of the best in Ohio. “Consistency, having a core group of players active year-round, a strong summer program, depth and a strong middle school program that feeds into the varsity.” Greer also feels very strongly about the ongoing tradition of the girls’ tennis program at Port Clinton along with the 8-court facility at the High School.

COLUMBUS — Ohio’s squirrel season will open on September 1, providing hunters with an opportunity to take as many as six squirrels each day, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. A long-time tradition for many hunters, Ohio’s squirrel season offers ample hunting opportunities for fox and gray squirrels across the state. It is a great time to get out in the woods and scout for the upcoming deer and fall wild turkey hunting seasons or take a youth hunting. Legal hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset daily. The season closes January 31. Squirrel season will be closed during the one-week statewide deer gun season, beginning November 29 through December 5; deer gun weekend, December 18 and 19; and during early muzzleloader deer season, October 18-23 at the following areas: Salt Fork State Wildlife Area, Shawnee State Forest and Wildcat Hollow. The abundance of nut crops is a good indicator of squirrel numbers the following year. Squirrels have higher survival and reproduction after years with an ample supply of acorns and hickory nuts. Statewide nut production ratings for fall 2009 were lower than average, especially for oaks in the southeastern portion of the state. Therefore, the predicted squirrel hunting outlook for the 2010-11 season is below average, particularly for gray squirrels. However, the early spring green-up and mild temperatures may offset some of the negative effects of poor mast production. Fox squirrel populations may have fared better than gray squirrels. Primary range for fox squirrel includes the western and northeastern portions of Ohio. Mast production for most tree species remained above average in these regions in 2009. Additionally, supplemental food (i.e., corn) may be more available to fox squirrels inhabiting agricultural areas. Hunters who wish to participate in the new squirrel hunting diary program, designed to track trends in nut crops and squirrel populations across the Buckeye State, should contact the Waterloo Wildlife Research Station 360 East State St., Athens OH 45701, for more information. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web site at www.ohiodnr.com.

Sandusky Rollergirls ready to take to the rink By TIA WOODEL Editorial Intern

When Renee Matthews began learning roller derby basics at a weekly practice in Cleveland, she got an idea. “I was driving an hour to and from Cleveland each week and decided I could try to start something similar in our area too. I created a Facebook page and held a sign up in April to see if anyone was interested,” said Matthews. Only four months later Matthews has a league consisting of 32 women. The Sandusky Rollergirls is broken up into four teams: Hell Cats, Heartbreakers, Lucky 7’s and Valkyries. With ages ranging from 20 to 45, many women Valid M-Th anytime, Fri-Sun after 2pm are getting involved in this new growing sport, including Exp 8/22/10 mothers and daughters. after the lead jammer calls off the jam. The lead jammer is the first to get through the pack legally or without penalty, and they can call of the jam anytime after lead jammer status has been earned. All four teams currently practice together, but might split later if more women join. The league practices and plays on a flat track unlike the bank track that other roller derby leagues play on. The season is year-round and the league will play in five bouts next year, three of which will be double-headers. This year, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, Sandusky Rollergirls will play in their first bout. Laurie Prieur, 27, of Sandusky, is getting ready for the upcoming bout. “I’m nervous, but I’m definitely excited. My family and friends were shocked that I stepped out of my comfort zone to do this. I’m excited to show them what I’ve been doing,” said Prieur. The Sandusky Rollergirls is a non-profit organization and all proceeds are lined up to go to local organizations including humane societies and soup kitchens. In order to get their name and information out, the women have been participating in local events including Party at the Plaza and Bike Week. According to Matthews, the league is hoping to add more women. “Once you get padded up and learn the basics, it’s a drug. Some women are afraid to join because they think roller derby is too violent, but it’s a common misconception. There are rules,” said Matthews. Sandusky Rollergirls is still open for anyone 18 and older to join. Being a part of the league costs $35 a month plus the cost of equipment and skates. For information go to http://www.facebook.com/SanduskyRollergirls, http:// www.mohawkstudio.net/sanduskyrollergirls/sandusky_ rollergirls%20main.htm, or email sanduskyrollergirls@ yahoo.com.
