Michael Long named president, CEO Magruder Hospital’s Board of Trustees has appointed Michael E. Long as the hospital’s next president and CEO. The appointment was made following the resignation of the former president and CEO Cliff Harmon in June. “The decision to appoint Mike Long as Magruder’s new president and CEO had unanimous support from the board,” according to Board Chairman Paul Druckenmiller. “He brings a strong understanding of Magruder and is deeply rooted in the community.

Official touts school plans By JOHN SCHAFFNER Port Clinton City Schools Superintendent Pat Adkins and the board of education are far enough along with their building project planning to let the community in on their plans. One project at the high school is nearing completion. Another, the main parking lot, began on Wednesday. Also, the tile flooring at Bataan Elementary School has been removed. Adkins spoke at the Port Clinton Kiwanis Club meeting on Wednesday, July 28, in an effort to update the community of the schools’ Facility Improvement Project made possible by passage of a levy last November and by acquiring some significant government stimulus dollars that were available on a one-timeonly basis. At the high school, much of the attention thus far has been focused on drainage as much of the storm water from Seventh Street drains south toward 10th Street. So a huge drainage system is being installed for the new parking lot to be located between Jefferson Street and the high school. A new parking lot located on the northeast corner of the campus holding some 84 vehicles is nearing completion and will be in place by the time school starts in a few weeks. The new main park-

Tradition takes a turn

117-year-old I-LYA Bay Week regatta changes format By TIA WOODEL Editorial Intern After 116 years of the InterLake Yachting Association’s Bay Week Sail Regatta, the New Bay Week is changing. What used to be a week-long event is now just a weekend — this Thursday through Saturday at Put-in-Bay. Bay Week is an annual event in which sailors from as far as Miami, Fla., travel to the island, to participate in a series of sailboat races. As part of the tradition, a variety of activities are planned including a ladies tea, cigar party and other social events as well as daily awards ceremonies for the winners. “We sent out over 1,000 sur-

veys and the information we got back showed that a weekend format was preferred by a majority of the participants. This seems to be the case because we have more than double the number of entrants than in last year’s regatta,” said Bob Sheppard, chairman of this year’s event. “We’re implementing several different items that competitors have asked for like online registration and scoring, more social events and more racing.” Around 140 boats will be participating in this year’s New Bay Week. Jack Wolfe is one of three

Social events schedule • Thursday, Aug. 5, will begin with ladies tea registration from noon to 4 p.m. Walk-in Regatta registration will take place from noon to 5 p.m. From 6 to 10 p.m. there will be a welcome party. Thursday’s events all take place at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club. • Friday, Aug. 6, will start with a welcome to the bay at the Boardwalk from 3 to 6 p.m. Awards will then take place at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club at 5 p.m. From 6 to 10 p.m., a Captain Morgan fun party will take place at the Crew’s Nest. • The Ladies Tea will be 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7 (registration is Thursday, Aug. 5). Awards will take place at 5 p.m. followed by a pig roast from 6 to 10 p.m. All Saturday’s events will take place at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club. • The regatta comes to an end Sunday, Aug. 8. Awards will take place at 12:30 p.m. at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club and the regatta is officially over at 2 p.m. The docks must clear at this time.

BULLETIN BOARD

PERRYSBURG — What memory changes can we expect as we age? How do we know when forgetfulness might be a symptom of a more serious problem? For answers to these questions, if you would like to learn more or are concerned about your own or someone else’s memory the program, “Memory Loss: What’s Normal, What’s Not,” might be for you. Hosted by the Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter, the program explores forgetfulness and memory loss. Examples of memory changes that are part of the normal aging process will be compared with memory changes that may be the result of dis-

ease or other factors besides aging. Participants will learn about treatable causes of memory loss, methods of memory improvement and influences on memory functions. “Memory Loss: What’s Normal, What’s Not” will be presented free Tuesday, Aug. 17, at the Kingston Residence of Perrysburg, 3333 E. Boundary St. Following a light breakfast from 8:30 to 9 a.m., the program will run until 10 a.m. Reservations are requested by calling 419-872-6200. For information, call The Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter, at 419-537-1999 or 800-2723900, or visit www.alz.org/nwohio.

Firelands Presbyterian Pre-School, Childcare earns state award In recognition of its excellent child care program and its ongoing commitment to children, Firelands Childcare in Port Clinton has received a Two-Star Step Up To Quality Award from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services — Bureau of Child Care and Development, the state agency responsible for licensing and promoting high standards among Ohio’s child care programs. “We congratulate Firelands for its high-quality early care and education program that goes above and beyond Ohio’s licensing standards,” said Terrie Hare, chief of the Ohio Bureau of Child Care and Development. Step Up To Quality is a voluntary rating system for early care and education programs. Participants can earn a one, two- or three-star rating by meeting an extensive list of quality benchmarks. Experts say these benchmarks improve the growth and development potential of children. The rating system also gives parents a useful tool for selecting quality early childhood programs. Two-Star Step Up To Quality programs meet the following criteria: • Have a ratio of one teacher for every five infants (ages birth-12 months), one teacher for every six infants (ages 12-18 months), one teacher for every seven toddlers (ages 18-36 months), one teacher for every 10 preschoolers (ages 36-48 months), one teacher for every 10 preschoolers (ages 48-60 months) and one teacher for every 16 school-aged children (ages 5-15 years).

Huge Selection of Chamilia beads, bracelets & necklaces • Half of the lead teachers have an early childhood education certificate or degree, are familiar with Ohio’s Early Learning Content Standards and have specialized training in language and literacy. • Teachers have 10 hours of child development training per year, above licensing requirements. • Employees are offered at least two employee benefits, which results in a lower turnover rate. “Firelands Preschool/Childcare is honored to receive this award. Our focus has always been on the excellent care and education of our children. This Two-Star award lets families know that our commitment to children is more than just lip-service,” said Karen Crownover, director. Step Up To Quality is available statewide. SHEER GEniuS

So. Here we are at the “last” month of summer. Where did those first two months of summer go? I remember years ago thinking that summer (when we were on vacation from attending school) went by much too quickly. And it seems to do so even now, years later. Summer is the charmed season! And as to reminders that it is high summer: last week there were small hordes of mayflies around Port Clinton. There must have been a second crop … and there are lots of tourists in town these days. Many appear to be shooters and their friends and families who are here for the National Rifle and Pistol Matches at Camp Perry. It’s good to see them here on their annual trek to the matches. So, if time is running down to the end of summer with its back-to-school, back-to-college, back-to-work after a short holiday “mentality”… what do you plan to do with the remainder of your August? Usually every year at this time I offer some suggestions for fun things to do not too far from home. Here they are for 2010: • Take a day trip to Kelleys Island — take a bicycle or rent a golf cart, get a map, explore. Don’t miss Inscription Rock and the Glacial Grooves. There are some nice restaurants over there — enough for you to take your pick. Stop at the Kelleys Mansion. Although it is not open to the public, you can still get a good look at it from the street. • Another good day trip is to South Bass Island. See the caves, the winery and the carousel. This is another place that you can rent bicycles or a golf cart. Buckle yourself in, take off and tour around to see all the island sights. Don’t forget the Lake Erie Island Historical Museum (and behind it is the Resale Shop with gently used secondhand items for sale. I always see something neat to buy there.) Another must-see is the Visitors Center of Perry’s Monument. I like the Butterfly House, too, and playing the mini golf course. Again, get a map and just explore. There is much to see and do — more than enough to fill a long day. I recommend that you wear comfortable walking shoes. • Good walking shoes would also be in order for a visit to Magee Marsh or the Ottawa Wildlife Refuge. Stop at the Visitors Center and spend some time. A little farther on toward Toledo is Maumee Bay State Park with its lodge and educational areas as well as lots of recreational opportunities. That is a great family place. • Visit my favorite place on all the earth — the Marblehead Lighthouse. Climb the stairs if you are able; the view is definitely worth it. Be sure to go into the museum there and also visit the Keeper’s House at 9999 E. Bayshore Road. And a trip to Marblehead would not be complete without stops at the galleries and unique shops. • Go to Cedar Point. Wait for a cool day if you can. If you like the heat, go on a day when the weather is hot. I personally always enjoyed an evening visit, back in the days when I was making frequent trips to the park. It was less crowded and the heat was more tolerable. • Visit Schedel Arboretum and Gardens at Elmore. There are 17 acres there and everywhere you look you’ll see something wonderful. • Go for a boat ride. • Go fishing — but check out Ohio laws first! • Water sports are great in our area. Find a place to swim or rent jet skis. • Visit a restaurant that has a good view of the river, lake or bay. pirouette® window shadings • Get a tan if you want $ LuMinette® one. to priVaCY sheers • Don’t forget that Toledo $ siLhouette® has a wonderful zoo. there tell me it’s a premier attraction. • Go to a baseball game. • Take in the wonderful exhibits at the Toledo Museum of Art. There are always special displays. But the museum’s own collection is one of the nation’s finest. • Don’t forget the Hayes Presidential Library, Museum and Residence in Fremont. And that’s a good place to go even if the only thing you want to do is to take a walk around the grounds. The pathway is paved and the tree-filled lawns are not only beautiful but peaceful and restful. • A little farther away is Sauder’s Farm and Museum in Archbold. Drive there to see the many old restored buildings depicting bygone eras. • And it’s only a short drive down to Amish country, to the east (primarily) of Millersville. This makes a nice day trip. But it’s also fun to stay at least overnight if you can. It’s a bit more relaxing. • I haven’t seen it but still want to go to Columbus to see the “Titanic” exhibition at COSI. Articles about it are very appealing. • African Safari Wildlife Park has a host of wild animals that you see close up while riding in your car. It’s right here — east of Port Clinton, on Lightner Road. • Don’t forget that this is the last season for “Prehistoric Forest. If you are going to see that, this year is your last opportunity. • Take a stroll on the streets, lanes, or beaches. Watch a sunset — or a sunrise — while holding the hand of someone you love. There are a lot of wonderful things to see and do here. If you did not get enough ideas from the preceding list, just check the chamber of commerce offices and the various visitors’ bureaus for ideas. August is a wonderful time. Let’s all make the most of it right here in the heart of the Great Lake Erie Vacationland or venture to another nearby location. nnn

The initial plan is for the new middle school to mirror the high school, especially the Performing Arts Center, which will be utilized by both facilities. “I can tell you that the new school will be state of the art from a technology standpoint,” Adkins said at the Kiwanis meeting. students in the district. The existing building will be used for grades three through five while the new construction will be for kindergarten through second grade. According to Adkins, the building will also hold some 100 school employees, including offices for two principals, one for kindergarten through second grade and another for grades three through five. “Planning the expansion at Bataan has been the hardest part of the project,” said Adkins. According to the superintendent, the school board and residents in the west end near the school have held several meetings regarding access. Two drives that will go from Sixth to Alice are tentatively planned, one (east of the school) for par-

ents dropping off their kids and another (west of the school) for Bus traffic. Concerns about those drives being used for nonschool related traffic are being addressed. “We can’t let that happen,” said Adkins. The superintendent also addressed concerns about the new Middle School and High School campus being part of a “cancer cluster.” “We have been told that this property was known as the Johansen Family Farm before the Schools bought it in the early 1960s. Our engineering consultants tell us that unless this was a site used to dump industrial waste, there is zero percent chance that there are any carcinogens buried there,” he said.

Ida Rupp Public Library takes reading online Demonstration of new animated, talking picture books planned for Friday, Aug. 6 The Ida Rupp Public Library has a new online e-book resource for children. TumbleBookLibrary is an online collection of TumbleBooks — animated, talking picture books that teach kids the joy of reading in a format they will love. TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music and narration to existing picture books in order to produce an electronic picture book. The TumbleBookLibrary is a collection of licensed titles from children’s book publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Chronicle Books, Candlewick Press, Charlesbridge

Press, Harcourt, Little Brown, Walker & Co. and Lerner Books. The collection can be accessed online from every computer in the library with an Internet connection or from home through a direct link on the library’s website www.idarupp.org. The TumbleBookLibrary has a selection of children’s favorite storybooks and fairy tales. The Language Learning Section includes a growing selection of books in Spanish and French. TumbleReadables invite children to read along featuring narration, sentence highlighting and au-

tomatic page turning. Audio books are unabridged, streaming audio books for children and teens. TumblePlayer works like an online music player. TumbleSearch allows students to search by title, author, publisher, language, and reading levels. Add favorite titles to the My Favorites section for easy access anytime. TumblePuzzles and TumbleGames feature a collection of challenging fun reinforcing concepts from the books.

To learn more about the TumbleBookLibrary, sign up for the Ida Rupp Public Library demonstration in the Mobile Computer Lab at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6. To register, call 419-732-3212.

Local attends international Delta Kappa Gamma convention Spokane Convention Center in Washington was the site of the International Convention of the 2010 Delta Kappa Gamma Society July 20-25. More than 1,400 women educators attended from 17 countries, including some from the newest country Panama which joined the society last year. Twenty nine Ohio members attended including Edna Hansen, of Port Clinton, a member of the International Finance Committee and past Ohio treasurer. Hansen, member of Alpha Zeta Chapter, presided at two sessions for state treasurers and with the members of the Finance Committee presented a session on planned giving as a legacy. Keynote speaker John F. Brock, CEO of the Coca Cola Company, stressed the value of leadership and how important an educated workforce is for his company, recog-

nized by Newsweek as the No. 1 food and beverage company. Coca Cola gives several $100,000 scholarships each year. Another speaker was Chris Rants, a 28-year member of the Iowa State Legislature. He stressed that programs must be planned years ahead because the legislators do want to help education but they are having many money problems. Amanda Gore from Australia used research to remind members of the power of positive thinking and environment, and how perception controls our beliefs as well as outcomes. A $2,500 Educator’s Book Award went to Dr. Susan Blum for her book, “My Word! Plagarism and College Culture.” Her sessions were well attended. New York City is the site of the 2012 convention.

Drew’s Custom Carts honors its customers Drew’s Custom Carts honored its customers July 24 with its inaugural customer appreciation day. The overwhelming crowd got to check out E-Z-GO’s new low speed vehicle — the 2Five. The 2Five is not a golf cart as it carries a 17-digit VIN number and is recognized as an automobile. The 2Five is accompanied by a title, it is a licensed, plated vehicle and great news, a 2Five purchase qualifies for a federal tax incentive. Guests attending that day were treated to an outdoor barbecue cooked by the Nor’Easter Club, Toft’s ice cream and cotton candy. Nemecek Insurance was on

hand to address questions concerning insuring golf carts as well as the 2Five. There were many door prizes given throughout the day. The grand prize, a set of golf cart tires on aluminum rims donated by E-ZGO, was won by Jim Keiselhorst, of Port Clinton. Drew’s Custom Carts is an authorized EZ-GO brand dealer. Drew’s offers new and used carts, service, batteries and accessories and now the new 2Five LSV. Financing is available, from application to approval in minutes. Drew’s is located at 537 W. Team loyalty?

Can you stand another commentary about a star basketball player being disloyal to his team? There has certainly been a lot of turmoil and hard feelings lately because of what’s-his-name dumping his former team for a better chance to win. Why are we surprised? We all know that professional sports are a business — an entertainment business. Stars are paid exorbitant salaries so team owners make money. Vendors make profits selling all kinds of products to fans. Government entities get much-needed tax revenue. Hotels, restaurants and parking garages are packed. Most pro sports are big business, or at least aspire to be. Leagues that don’t attract a lot of fan interest fold ‌ because they don’t make enough money. When so many people have a vested interest in the team being profitable, loyalty doesn’t matter very much. Coaches are fired, players are bought and sold, and entire teams can move to another city if a team isn’t successful. Players are prepared to move from one team to another because they understand it’s just business. Why does it bother us so much when a sport is run like a business? I think it’s because part of the reason for the appeal of sports is loyalty — cheering for our team — not just any team, but our team. We know and care about the players. The team belongs to us. It often bears the name of our community or school. Alumni are proud. We feel betrayed when it seems the athletes don’t care about us. It’s happening at all levels. Unfortunately, youth sports are also subject to divided loyalty issues. It seems impossible, since players don’t make money unless they are cheating on eligibility rules. The desire to achieve stardom can wreck any willingness to be a team player. A

focus on personal statistics will fuel comparisons instead of cooperation. Notice how often what is thought to be best for one person takes precedent over what’s best for their team. We’ve almost come to expect it. College athletes become pros before their eligibility is up. Parents move to other school districts or give up custody of their children to offer them what is perceived to be a better chance to succeed. Good players choose not play for a team because they don’t like the coach or a teammate. Kids walk away from teams that need them all the time. One magic result of playing on a team can be camaraderie. Working and accomplishing goals together is a great experience. Kids who are lucky enough to play on a team where nobody cares who gets the headlines, has players who hang out with each other at one another’s homes and who support each other in good times or bad have wonderful lifetime memories. Coaches preach that there is no “I in the word “Team. Why? If the players have a team-first attitude, they play better, have more fun and work harder. They also win more! It is poison when players don’t get along or there is jealousy. Kids take sides, parents get involved and coaches spend valuable time and energy taking care of off the field problems. What does a “team player look like? They see themselves as part of a team — not the star. They don’t expect or demand special treatment. She is happy for teammates who do well. He goes out of his way to help others get better. They encourage teammates who’ve made a mistake. Their first concern is the team’s success and not their own stats. They love playing the sport. So many kids play today with the attitude of “what’s in it for me? We are in danger of losing the lessons of teamwork and loyalty that athletics can teach. Coaches and parents need to make decisions based on what is good for the team rather than for one player. Teaching teamwork can be very difficult, but it’s worth the effort in the long run.

FINANCIAL FOCUS

For whom are you investing? You may, on occasion, ask yourself why you are investing. Why go through the fluctuations of the financial markets, the worry over interest rate movements, the fears of today and the uncertainties of tomorrow? To answer this question, you may need to ask: For whom am I investing?: • You’re investing for yourself. It sounds selfish, but it’s not. You may be investing in your 401(k), IRA and other investment accounts so that you can enjoy a comfortable retirement. But you’re also investing so you GARY COON can become financially independent — free of worries that you’ll become a burden to your children. And given the real possibility of spending two, or even three, decades in an active retirement, it’s imperative that you put as much as you can possibly afford into those investment vehicles that can help you pursue your financial independence. • You’re investing for your family. If you have children or grandchildren, you may want to help pay for college. And, as you know, college has gotten much more expensive in recent years, so you’ll need to save and invest from the time your children are very young, and you’ll need to choose the right accounts, such as a 529 college savings plan or a Coverdell Education Savings Account. But you’ll also need to think about other family members, too. Have you built up enough in your retirement accounts so that the money would be sufficient to support your surviving spouse should anything happen to you? Will you have enough resources to help support your elderly parents should they require assistance? And will you be able to leave the type of legacy you desire? • You’re investing for your beliefs. Throughout your working years, you may try to give as much money as you can to those charitable organizations whose work you support. Yet you may wish you could do even more. And eventually, you may be able to. For example, if you hold an investment for many years and then sell it, you’ll have to pay capital gains taxes on any increase in value — and the capital gains tax rate of the future may not be as low as it has been. But if you were to give the appreciated asset to a charitable organization, you could avoid paying the tax, because the organization would be the one that eventually sold the asset. Plus, you might even get a current income tax break for your contribution. You might also want to include charitable organizations in your estate plans, after consulting with your attorney or other estate tax advisor. As you can see, you’ve got some “key constituenciesâ€? counting on you. By keeping them in mind, you should have the motivation you need to overlook the day-to-day ups and downs of investing — while you keep your focus on your important long-term goals.

SANDUSKY — Just like the miles of vineyards in the Lake Erie Shores & Islands region, the always-popular Toast of Ohio Wine Heritage Festival is growing. To celebrate the area’s heritage as the largest wine-producing region in the nation prior to Prohibition, the traditionally one-day event on the shores of Lake Erie is expanding to three days of wine tasting, gourmet food eating and art show shopping. The wine festivities begin Thursday, Aug. 12, with a wine-tasting cruise aboard the Goodtime I, where passengers will enjoy a leisurely sight-seeing cruise on Sandusky Bay and Lake Erie and witness a spectacular sunset. The cruise departs the Jackson Street Pier at 7 p.m. and returns to port at 9 p.m. The cruise is sponsored by Specialty Wines, and will feature Italian imports. Wine selections are included in the cost; tickets for cruise are just $25 per person and can be purchased at the Lake Erie Shores & Islands Welcome Center. Hors d’ouvres will be provided by Creative Cuisine. The festivities kick into high gear on Friday, Aug. 13, and Saturday, Aug. 14, at the waterfront Sandusky Bay Pavilion (605 E. Water St., Sandusky) with the official Toast of Ohio Wine Heritage Festival, now in its seventh year. This event features 12 Ohio wineries, gourmet food, live musical entertainment and an artist’s showcase. The festival grounds will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and noon to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The Beacon/Huron Hometown News

Nagoya offers a little something for everyone BY TIA WOODEL Editorial Intern PORT CLINTON — Owners Mel and Barb Ayers, along with the staff at Nagoya Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi, celebrated its five-year anniversary this May. Located at 3975 E. Harbor Road, the restaurant is open 4:30 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4:30 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday. At Nagoya, there are many options for diners to choose from. According to Barb, hibachi dinners — where the chef prepares your meal at the table in front of you — are available and include steak, chicken and seafood options. Fried rice and Yummy Sauce, which is also sold by the quart at Nagoya, come with the hibachi meals. Guests can also choose to eat at the sushi bar where fish is flown in from all over the world several times throughout the week to ensure freshness. If customers would prefer a

meal not cooked in front of them or one that isn’t cooked at all, they can order from the traditional menu. Specialty dishes such as filet mignon, chicken Batayaki, rack of lamb, seabass dinner and Lobster Batayaki are also offered. “Our customers always have an option of different areas to dine in the restaurant as well as different foods to choose from,” said Barb. “Nagoya is unique because we offer something so different compared to any restaurants within miles. You can enjoy dining here while on a date, it’s the perfect place to celebrate a birthday or anniversary because of the groupdining environment, and the kids love the experience. It puts parents at ease when going out to dinner.” The restaurant runs specials seven days a week. Two or three featured sushi rolls, an appetizer and an entrée from the kitchen are posted around the restaurant and change weekly. Other special features include

martini of the month; Wind Down Wednesday at the Waterfront Patio Bar, when there’s a special $5 menu; and Monday Night Sushi during the winter months when which sushi, specialty rolls and appetizers are half off, are also popular specials. Nagoya offers live entertainment on its patio from 6 to 9 p.m. every Sunday until Labor Day. “We are so happy that our customers are able to enjoy the waterfront patio, which some say is ‘Catawba Islands’ Best Kept Secret’,” Barb said. “We have such a great staff and without their dedication and talent, we wouldn’t be where we are today. It’s always nice to walk into a place of business and see familiar faces, and our staff continues to develop great relationships not only with our locals but our seasonal visitors,” said Barb. For information about Nagoya Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi, call 419734-6400, visit www.nagoyaohio.com or Find Nagoya on Facebook.

The weekend starts off Friday with Polkas in the Park at James Park off Ohio 163. Wayne Golob Band will play from 5 to 7 p.m. with Hot Dog Dave and Knights of Columbus Fish Sandwiches on hand for food and refreshments. Guests should bring their lawn chairs. Accordionist Ed Klimczak will play from noon to 3 p.m. on the patio of Jodie McCallum & Company and Wayne Golob Band will perform from noon to 3 p.m. at Holy Assumption Orthodox Church. Sunday, Aug. 15, there will be the Whitey Priebe Polka Fest Ladies Auxiliary Cancer Benefit held by the Marblehead VFW Post 7572. Magic Buttons accordion ensemble will perform noon to 1:30 p.m. outdoors

and Frank Moravcik Orchestra of Cleveland will perform from 2 to 6 p.m. in hall. The music is $5 and food is available. The 54th annual Halupki Festival will be Sunday, Aug. 15, at Holy Assumption Orthodox Church at 114 E. Main St., Marblehead. Free parking is available in the St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church Parking Lot (at the Lighthouse) and a free shuttle bus will go to the festival. Divine Liturgy will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Halupki and ham dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Refreshments, raffles, craft vendors, church tours and Rusyn Psyanky (Easter Egg) decorating demonstrations are also going to be available. Raz, Dva, Tre Russian Folk Ensemble, Wayne Golob Band with Ed Klimczak and Frank Moravcik Orchestra will be the live entertainment starting at 11:30 a.m.

August means barbershop is back on the islands For the 63rd consecutive year, barbershop chords will be ringing on the Bass Islands. Approximately 15 quartets from Ohio and neighboring states will present a free concert on the back porch of the monument visitors center at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13. Joining the quartets will be an 80-plus member men’s chorus who will be singing the national anthems as the Canadian and American flags are lowered. As in the past, several nationally recognized quartets are expected to be in the lineup. In case of rain or threatening weather, the concert will take place at the school gym, using the entrance across from the ball diamond. This year’s program will be dedicated

to the memory of Mary Ann Market who passed away in April. Her contributions to the islands were truly admirable. She served on many boards, including the Perry Group and the Lake Erie Historical Society, serving as president of the Perry Group for two terms, 2005 to 2008. Donations from the concert will go to The Perry Group and the Historical Society. Also of note, Mary Ann’s son, Scott, and grandson, Jacob, Scott’s son, have both sung in barbershop quartets. Then at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, the Middle Bass concert will take place at the town hall — where it all started. The public is welcome to attend.

WINE from 3 seum will host tours and activities. The Lake Erie Shores & Islands once featured huge vineyards that spread from east of Sandusky to the western region near the bay because of the lakeshore climate. The Toast of Ohio event was developed to celebrate the area’s winemaking heritage. Today, dozens of wineries still operate in the region. Participating wineries include: Ferrante Winery, Firelands Winery, Hermes Vineyards, Maize Valley Winery, Matus Winery, Meier’s Wine Cellars, Mon Ami Historic Winery, Myrddin Winery, Quarry Hill Winery, St. Joseph Vineyard, Stoney Ridge Winery, and Viking Winery. Other event sponsors include Ohio Grape Industries, Ohio Magazine, Lake Erie Shores & Islands-East Welcome Center and the City of Sandusky.

The finest and freshest steak & seafood available!

To the citizens of Port Clinton and the surrounding area, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have wished us well and have welcomed us to Port Clinton. I have met a number of fine people in this community and have definitely made some new friends. The Island House Restaurant and Lounge was built by Conrad Gernhard in the year 1886 and some of its history is displayed in detail in the rear foyer of the hotel. In the past, such notables as Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Clark Gable, Joe DiMaggio, General Douglass MacArthur, Bob Dylan, and three United States Presidents have graced the Island House with their presence. As you know the Island House Restaurant and Lounge has undergone many changes in the past few years. We come to this area with the acknowledgment of this restaurant’s rich history and we want to return it to its former high level of service and value for your community. We welcome your input, and encourage you to suggest how we might make your visit with us more enjoyable. We will be adjusting the menu and staff as warranted. We ask for your patience while we make these adjustments and most importantly, we ask for your business to bring the Island House Restaurant and Lounge to its full potential for your future dining pleasure. If you’ve made reservations for

the upcoming year, it is important to call our reservation desk (419-734-9271) to confirm the date and time of your event. Thank you, and with highest regards,

Donna S. Smith
