Update from PC City Hall

Festivities under way

Dear Port Clinton Residents and Guests, I would like to give you this brief update on the status of Port Clinton. As stated in my State of the City Address, I believe we are a “work in progress.” Almost everywhere you turn you are seeing equipment, workers and construction, which means we are moving Port Clinton forward. Thank you for your patience through this process, we know it can be an inconvenience, but the benefits will outweigh them. nnn

Ohio Public Works Sixth Street project is nearing completion. Four catch basins between Taft and Bataan were installed, along with curbing and resurfacing. Construction on the Third Street water line began this June. Trees were removed from Jefferson to Hayes, new fire hydrants and water lines are currently being installed. The Third Street sewer separation is under way but running behind because of the weather. The Kwest Group has added a second crew to get back on schedule as the weather permits. Third Street work along the west end of town to the Riverview Cemetery has begun and should finish within the next few weeks. nnn

Junior Fair crowns Zak Avers, Molly Hansen Monday night The fair was in full swing by Monday night when Zak Avers and Molly Hansen were named this year’s Ottawa County Junior Fair king and queen. Hansen, 19, is attending The University of Toledo majoring in middle childhood education. She has been involved in Country Kids 4-H, Jr. Fair Board, CarTeens and is a camp counselor. Molly wrote in her essay that she would like to become a role model as queen, as prior queens were to her as she was growing up, because “there is no better feeling than being an influencing factor in a child’s happiness.” Hansen is the daughter of Richard and Tracy Hansen Avers, 17, will be a senior at Woodmore High School this fall. Our community has many wonderful residents that take pride in where they live, have the time and want to make a difference in our community. I would like to thank Joe Beirs, Maxine Carnicom, Barb McCleary, John Fritz, Tony and Jeanine Cipiti, Tony and Doug Garret, Bruce and Martha Bridgeman, Jim Bergman, Lee Horn, local residents from Erie Gardens, Tracy Colston, city crews, Allied Waste, Vince Leone and his son for the improvements in the west end of town. Also many thanks to the Conestoga Committee for their cleanup projects. Your efforts have truly made a difference and are greatly appreciated. I would like to thank the walleye festival committee for all their hard work and dedication for another successful festi-

We had 110 correct entries in our Find Wylie contest last week. Our winner is Leah Tusen, of Port Clinton, who found Wylie in the Young’s Carpet One Floor & Home ad on page 4A last week. Leah wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Convenient Stores. We’ll hide Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop us a note at our office or click on the Find Wylie icon online at www.thebeacon. net. Also, we are hiding a beach ball in an ad located somewhere in our Northcoast Live section, and we had 20 find it last week in the ad for The Round House Bar on page 3. Congratulations n

I got a nice e-mail note this week from Janie Storrs who celebrated a birthday (I won’t say how many candles) on Monday, July 12. Her oldest granddaughter, Suzanne Storrs, who just got her driver’s license, took her to lunch. On top of that, Suzanne, who works at Monsoon Lagoon, used her grandpa’s ’79 Corvette to drive her to lunch. “There are GREAT teenagers out there doing great things,” said Janie. nnn

WATER WARNING By ANGIE ADAIR Test results prompted health officials to post a water advisory sign at City Beach in Port Clinton Friday. Bacteria in water samples — taken three times a week by the Ohio Department of Health — exceeded the standards. “Typically, it’s E. coli,” said Nancy Osborn, Ottawa County Health Commissioner. According to Osborn, effects of exposure generally include gastroenteritis,

or diarrhea, and ear infections. Seniors and small children are most at risk. “Twenty-four hours after a major rain event, people should be cautious of swimming in any lake,” Osborn said. “This is the first posting I know of for Port Clinton this year. For the most part I think our beaches have done pretty well.” The sign will remain in place until bacteria levels drop.

Lesson in wealth Class envy, pitting the poor against the wealthy has been a tactic of politicians to pander for votes for years. So as to not fall into that trap Americans need to know these facts of reality about wealth. • Wealth is not a zero sum game. Your being wealthy does not make me poor. Everyone can be wealthy. • You cannot make the poor wealthy by making the wealthy poor.

PORT CLINTON — The Sixth Street reconstruction project from Harrison Street to Fulton Street has been selected for funding by the Ohio Department of Transportation. “This is wonderful news, said Mayor Debbie Hymore-Tester. “The first phase was resurfacing Sixth Street from Taft Street to Harrison Street. Now with this award from ODOT, the street improvements on Sixth Street can be completed. The Small City Program of ODOT will provide 80 percent of the eligible construction costs while the city is responsible for the remaining 20 percent local share. The local share must be provided from a non-federal funding source. The estimated total cost of the project as submitted was $1,470,500. continue to pursue that important goal to move Port Clinton forward. Through examination, study and planning, we have made great strides in improving our city: the Derby Pond project which benefits local residents and visitors; sewer plant renovations; Phase I of downtown, Waterworks Park environmentals; improvements of city parks, new restroom/shelterhouse, City Beach cleanup and beautification, resurfacing of Perry Street, sewer projects, street repair and resurfacing ‌ Many of these projects can take years of planning and funding in order for them to be successful. Every project completed is one positive step in the development of Port Clinton, improving its quality of life and attracting new revenue streams to improve our economy. â– â– â–

I thank members of City Council, our city employees, and Port Clinton citizens for their support and efforts to help keep Port Clinton moving forward. Downtown Port Clinton is a major area of focus. In July we will have many volunteers from Merck Medco who will be performing community service in helping with weeding, painting lampposts and the painting of certain buildings. Special thanks to Ohio Edison for donating the paint. If you would like to help, please contact the Mayor’s Office at 419-734-5522, ext.8, for details. New benches and flowerpots have been purchased and there will be new curbing and some new sidewalks in areas of concern. The problems with downtown trees are also being addressed.

This is what has become the biggest weekend on Put-in-Bay. It is Christmas in July on the Island. I recall performing with the Lounge Lizards on that weekend a few years back. They had me dress up as Santa Claus and I walked in to the front door of the Round House. I remember having so many nice young girls wanting to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. Ahhhhhhh … memories! Speaking of the Lizards — the band is bringing back Bo Loeffler and his sister Molly Mack to perform at the Barge Party at Bay Point Beach on Saturday, July 31. That monthly event has become somewhat of a phenomenon as hundreds of boats and thousands of people stand in the water and enjoy a rock concert presented from a beached barge! nnn

The Beacon BY VIRGINIA PARK

Beacon Bits Last Friday night, Dr. Tom Duncan lectured at Put-in-Bay on the topic of how the flora (vegetation) on the Lake Erie island has changed over the past many decades. He was a scholar at Ohio State University and he himself surveyed flora on the island in the 1970s. He spent last week on the islands (in both American and Canadian waters) looking at flora and comparing what is there now to what he saw approximately 40 years ago. His presentation included pictures taken back then and now. So it was easy to identify places where much new growth had taken place or, conversely, where growth had been squeezed out by development or environmental or natural causes. His findings have been gathered into a reference book, now available from the Black Swamp Conservancy. Call Lisa Brohl at 419-285-5811 for information about the project or the book.

Back to Put-in-Bay ■■■

By the time you read this the Ottawa County Fair will be well under way. There is something for everyone at the fair and you’re sure to enjoy it when you make a visit. The fairgrounds are on West Ohio 163 between Port Clinton and Oak Harbor. It’s only about 2 miles to the east of Oak Harbor. ■■■

I wrote this on Sunday evening. There was a little thunder and I hoped for rain — but it did not arrive. As it grew dark I walked outside and the temperature had dropped significantly. There was even a little breeze. It seemed great to walk barefoot in the grass and enjoy temperatures that were something other than blazing, murderously hot! We do need rain. Crops and lawns and gardens are scorched and parched. My own lawn, which I do not water primarily because of its size, is looking brown and sere. And I will have to remove (soon) three small trees in the back yard because of the emerald ash borer. I was hoping to escape the onslaught of the nasty little borer but it did not happen. I will be very sorry to have the trees removed. On the brighter side of the picture, it will allow more sunlight for growing flowers and vegetables.

I’m looking forward to the opportunity to making homemade lemonade this week. I’ll be attending a party where all the foods and beverages must be “old-

fashioned.” So the beverage will be pink lemonade. It’s been so long since I’ve made it that I had to get out a recipe! For starters it takes the juice of four lemons, two quarts of water and sugar to taste. And I’m going to try to make some of it with Splenda (an artificial sweetener). We’ll see how it turns out. My guess is that it will be really good. Most lemonade we get these days is made from the powdered product and isn’t as tasty as the “real” stuff.

roses symbolized friendship or devotion. Gerbera daisies stood for innocence. Here are some other flowers with their special meaning as excerpted from the Internet: • pansy — thought • daffodil — regard or chivalry • ivy — fidelity • lilac — first emotions of love • bell flower — thinking of you • bells of Ireland — luck • Bird’s foot trefoil; revenge (!) • carnation (pink — woman’s love; red — heartache) • red poppy — pleasure • yellow tulip — hopeless love • blue violets — faithfulness There are many more flowers with many more coded messages. So, back in Victorian days, all you had to do was send a certain kind of flower to deliver a particular message — and you did not have to say a word!

This next item sounds like a program only for farmers who produce vegetable crops. But I’m not sure of that. The North Central Agriculture Research Station staff and others will present a “mini-diagnostic lab” demonstration on peppers, heirloom tomato varieties and sweet corn. Time is 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27; location is corner of County Road 43 and Ohio 53, southwest of Fremont. The program is free, open to the public and registration is not required.

Jerry Jonke told me about an interesting article he had read about the current status of American marriage in “Newsweek” magazine. I thought that what he said was so interesting that I borrowed it from the library. Called, “I Don’t — The Case Against Marriage,” it is in the June 21 edition. Definitely written from a woman’s perspective, two young women, Jessica Bennett and Jesse Ellison, are the writers. They tell us a great deal about what’s going on in our society today, including the fact that “Americans have the highest divorce rate in the Western world,” and that despite the fact that men now help more with childrearing and housework, women, even in dual-earning households, “still do about two-thirds of the housework.” Making the case for staying single, the authors say that now women are becoming more educated than men (nearly 60 percent of college graduates are women) and are becoming better compensated for their work. An alarming “one in five marriages dissolves within five years.” Adding to this complex situation is the fact that the author says there is no longer a stigma attached to having a child outside the bonds of marriage. Forty-one percent of American births occurred outside marriage in 2008 and the fastest growing group of unmarried women having babies is successful women with education and financial independence. So it’s a very interesting article. Read it to make sure I quoted it correctly. I’m going to do some more research on marriage, divorce, etc. in America and around the world. Stay tuned for more information in this column in weeks to come.

Tuesday, Aug. 12, is the date for a tour of North Bass Island. This eighth annual visit leaves from the village of Put-in-Bay and will be in memory of Mary Ann Market. Mary Ann (nee Devore) initiated the tour from South Bass to North Bass as a fundraiser for the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society. The Market family has consistently provided transportation on their Miller Boat Line for these yearly tours. North Bass Island residents will have food and crafts and island wines available for sampling for the visitors. Cost of admission and the boat ride is $50 per golf cart. You may rent a golf cart if you don’t have one, but reservations are a must. Call 419-285-2804 if you want to join in. Also — a question many have had for years is: Why was North Bass Island named “ Isle St. George?” Well, it turns out that researcher Mike Gora has answered that question by finding a rare book that was published more than 100 years ago. “The Diary of Mrs. John Graves Simcoe” was written 1792-1796. She was wife of the first lieutenant governor of the Province of Upper Canada. The diary covers the travels of the Simcoes as they journeyed through Canada and the Great Lakes region. Here is an important entry from her diary: “April 1794 … detained for some days among the Bass islands, at the west end of Lake Erie, by contrary winds. They went on some of the islands, and it being St. George’s Day, gave one of the islands that name.” This information came from the newsletter of the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society, June 2010. ■■■

The final “Chautauqua” of the Ohio Humanities Council takes place in Marysville July 27-31. It’s the last stop on the tour. I hope to get there because I always enjoy the Chautauqua dramatizations. For information, call 1-800-293-9774.

The National Rifle and Pistol Matches opened on July 12 at Camp Perry just west of Port Clinton. The “First Shot” ceremony took place on that day with Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland doing the honors of making the first shot. The matches conclude on Aug. 17. During that interval there will be people in Port Clinton from all over the nation — and some from other countries, too. Already there are many men and women in military camouflage clothing being seen around town. It is a familiar and welcome sight. Until next week …

Various flowers denoted a number of different “messages.” For example red roses implied passionate love. According to Wikipedia, pink roses indicated love, white roses indicated virtue and yellow

Rain garden installed in Allen Township Volunteers, trustees, master gardeners, Allen Township employees and the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District joined forces to create and plant a rain garden at the new Allen Township Cemetery Memorial. The memorial is designed to honor veterans, firefighters, families and organizations. “This is the first rain garden that has been installed in our Storm Water Community area,” said Crystal Dymond, storm water technician. “Structures like rain gardens help to slow runoff after heavy rains by allowing the water to slowly filter through the landscape. The native plants that are chosen can tolerate both wet and dry conditions because their roots are deeper than other plants and they are used to our local conditions. The native plants also help to filter out the bad elements in the soil before it drains in a waterway, stormwater drain or in this case, a pond.” Allen Township officials are excited with their efforts in “going green” and would like to thank the following for helping plant the rain garden: Mark and Donna Keller, Cody Harder, Mike Harder, Sonia Eischen, Scott Everhardt, Beatrice Miringu, Cheryl Rice, Dymond and Carol Benner. The trustees invite township residents to view the rain garden and support the memorial by purchasing engraved bricks or granite benches. For information on this, call the committee at 419-836-9614 or 419-836-2045. For information or presentations on storm water, rain barrels and rain gardens, call Dymond at 419-8981595.

Food pantry offers choice There are many of the working poor in our community who are living paycheck to paycheck and not having enough money to pay bills and to put food on the table. If you live in the 43452 zip code, which includes the city of Port Clinton and surrounding three townships, you may qualify for food from the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. The food pantry is open to all, regardless of race or religion, based on your monthly income. The food pantry is located in back of the Knights of Columbus Hall, 109 E. Perry St.

The pantry is open bi-weekly on Saturdays throughout the year. Our “choice pantry allows each family to select food items from stocked shelves according to their needs. Using the food pyramid as a guide, we work toward providing a three-day supply of commodities, milk, meat and bread, to each families’ household per giveaway. If you need help and think you may qualify, contact Ann Heckerd at 419-732-1870.

Area Goodwill has new name SANDUSKY—Sandusky Bay Area Goodwill Industries Inc. has a new name, but its mission to provide employment services for the disabled and disadvantaged remains unchanged. The Sandusky-based nonprofit organization is now Goodwill Industries of Erie, Huron, Ottawa and Sandusky Counties Inc. “The new name better reflects our service territory because we serve more than the immediate bay area,

Robert M. Talcott Jr., president and CEO, said. “Having ‘Goodwill’ at the beginning of our name also makes it easier for people to find us in directories and other reference materials, he said. Founded in 1973, the newly named agency is one of 16 Goodwills in Ohio and 159 in the United States. Its operations are funded largely by the sale of donated items at seven area retail stores and subcontracted work performed at work centers in Fremont and Sandusky. Over the years, it has provided training and employment-related services, including jobs, to thousands of residents in Erie, Huron, Ottawa and Sandusky counties. Of its approximately 240 employees, 70 percent are disabled or disadvantaged. Locally, a Goodwill store operates at 205 S.E. Catawba Road, Port Clinton

Park is co-chairwoman for State Recorders Conference Virginia Park, Ottawa County Recorder, was in charge of planning all continuing education sessions for the annual conference of the Ohio Recorders Association held June 16-17. The conference was attended by 67 county recorders or their deputies from across Ohio. Park was appointed co-chairman of the conference by ORA President Bryan Long, of Licking County, in 2009. Her list of educational speakers was assembled after conducting a survey of the state’s 88 Recorders to determine the subjects in which they were most interested. Then Park headed a committee of five Recorders to find speakers to teach the most requested topics. Also serving on the committee were Colleen Carmack, Sandusky County Recorder, and Barb Sessler, Erie County Recorder. The keynote topic of the conference, “Employee Issues,” was presented by Christine Schneider-Smith of CASS Enterprises, Fremont. Schneider-Smith helped participants use an evaluation form to determine the basic personality of a least one of their office employees. She then discussed how supervisors can focus on motivating and evaluating employees by considering that most people are one of four basic personality types. Schneider-Smith also addressed a number of problems that arise in the workplace (such as tardiness or absenteeism) and described techniques for dealing with these problems. Other presentations were made by: • Howard Heffelfinger of Clemans-Nelson Consulting

Company, Columbus; he discussed how to conduct employee lay-offs and terminations under current Ohio law. • Devon Priddle, communications manager of the Vital Statistics Section of the Ohio Department of Health, Columbus; she spoke on the subject of registration for Veterans’ graves. Under state law, County Recorders must keep a record of where all veterans are buried. This information is supplied quarterly from the state Dept of Health after compiling information received from funeral directors. • Wendi Faulkner, from the office of Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray; she addressed the topic of “Identity Theft.” Faulkner discussed the latest criminal techniques used by identity thieves and gave hints to avoid being victimized. She also described the difficulties in clearing up the financial and other problems caused by the perpetrators of these crimes. Ottawa County Prosecuting Attorney Mark Mulligan gave a presentation on dealing with news media including newspaper, television and radio reporters. His presentation was followed with information from Park who outlined tactics for improving a person’s image through public relations initiatives. Other presentations included a discussion on legislation that affects the work of County Recorders; this was led by the ORA Legislative Committee chairwoman and Fulton County Recorder Sandra Barber. Tammy Barger, Recorder of Mercer County, dealt with “Questions and Answers”

Danbury Township Trustees — July 14 At the regular meeting of the Danbury Township Board of Trustees held July 14, the following business was conducted: • Charles Scott reported cleanup week was progressing quite well. He presented a quote from BrumbaughHerrick for asbestos inspection services for township hall in the amount of $1,490. The quote was approved by the trustees. Scott distributed sample copies of job descriptions for the board to review. The batting cage will be taken down and stored. • Police Chief Michael Meisler reported 544 incidents in June and 284 to date in July. • Dianne Rozak reported Safety Coordinator Deb Burley Biro has scheduled a defensive driving class for employees to be conducted by the Highway Patrol. Deb is working on two job safety analyses for each department, the employee safety suggestion program, accident analysis, changes to the OBWC drug-free workplace program and a township emergency management planning procedure. • Zoning Inspector Rhonda Botti Sowers reported the zoning office has issued 33 permits in June and five to date in July. The BZA will hold two public hearings on July 21 beginning at 6:30 p.m., both of which are for area variances. A Land Use Plan committee meeting was held on July 12 and another meeting is scheduled for July 27 at township hall at 6 p.m. Sowers presented a comprehensive zoning report for the month of June which included responding to 397 calls, emails and in person inquiries along with 16 site visits. • Fiscal Officer Shelley Seamon completed public records training and presented a fiscal report. • Trustees agreed to place an advertisement for a request for proposals for architectural services needed at township hall. • The complaint at 7055 E. Harbor Road was discussed. Rozak stated the prosecutor advised that since three boats are not a violation of zoning they may remain on the property. • Trustees approved the proposal from The Collaborative for the remodeling of the 419 S. Bridge Road property in the amount of $42,000. • Trustees reminded everyone of the public meeting at the Danbury Senior Center on Aug. 5 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the potential acquisition of the Keeper’s House on Bayshore Road. • Trustees approved David Price Metal Services to grind the brush at the drop off site in the amount of $2,986. This amount will cover the initial grinding and a re-grinding. • Rozak reported upon Rep. Dennis Murray’s request. She sent him a summary of crash statistics and recent photographs of the North Shore Boulevard-Ohio 163 intersection. • Rozak reported the prosecutor advised that since the vacant mobile homes located on property owned by Duane Stevens at 1049 Englebeck Road are not a violation of zoning they may remain. Aesthetic concerns cannot be regulated by the trustees. • Rozak advised she is in the process of following up with Larry Hebert regarding his unfinished garage on Erie Beach Road. • Rozak reported Fred Peterson from the Emergency Management Office will provide a brief presentation at the Aug. 11 trustee meeting. • A notice was read requiring a quorum of trustees from each township to be present at two of three electric aggregation hearings. • Rozak reported Donna Lueke of the United Way contacted her regarding five students from the BGSU Student Leadership Group that will plan to do a cleanup at Meadowbrook on Aug. 10. Lueke and Rozak also discussed potential development and communication of a program for volunteers to assist seniors with household tasks. • Trustees set a hearing for 6:30 p.m. on July 28 for a rezoning request by North Coast Development. • Rozak will send letters regarding complaints of high weeds and overgrown grass on property owned by Willow Brook Developers on Bayshore Road and on property owned by Randal Scherf at 5595 Mistic Bay. • Trustees adopted a resolution of necessity for renewal

Financial Focus

Navigating your way through investing You may not realize it, but July 24 is Amelia Earhart Day. July 24 was chosen because it’s the birthday of perhaps the most famous female aviator in history. Earhart’s story ended tragically when she became lost in the Pacific Ocean in 1937 on her voyage around the world, but she is still celebrated for her bravery and pioneer spirit. As an investor, you can learn a lot from Earhart’s career. Here are a few lessons to consider: • Plan ahead. After a lengthy analysis of Earhart’s final flight, decades after it occurred, a noted aviation expert came to one succinct conclusion: “poor planning, worse execution.” Yet

on her successful flights, Earhart was known to have produced, and followed, detailed flight plans. As an investor, you, too, must plan your journey toward your financial goals. First, you need to identify your destination, such as a comfortable retirement. Next, you must create a “map” to reach your goal, in the form of a detailed financial strategy based on an investment portfolio tailored to your risk tolerance and time horizon. And along the way, you must chart your progress via regular reviews of your investments’ performance. • Use the right “tools.” Some sources have noted that, on the fateful flight, Earhart did not appear to fully understand how to

use her plane’s direction-finding loop antenna, which at the time was a new technology. If you don’t fully understand the “tools” — that is, the investments — you need to help achieve your goals, you may run into difficulties. Always know exactly what you’re investing in and why you’ve chosen those specific investments. Without this information, you could end up with investments that are either too risky for your comfort or too conservative for your goals. • Follow your vision. On the day they disappeared, Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, were scheduled to land on Howland Island. Unfortunately, it was a cloudy day; some researchers

speculate that the clouds’ dark shadows on the ocean surface may have camouflaged Howland and confused the aviators. As an investor, you need a clear view of what you want to accomplish in the long term — and you need to avoid having your vision “clouded over” by short-term events such as price drops and recessions. • Put sufficient “power” in your portfolio. COLUMBUS — Nine former Ohio State student-athletes — including one from Lakeside — will be inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame the weekend of Sept. 24-25. The class will be officially inducted Sept. 24 during a ceremonial dinner and introduced to the public at halftime of the Ohio State home football game against Eastern Michigan Sept. 25. Ticket information for the ceremony will be released at a later date. The 2010 class includes: • Men — Angel Aja (volleyball), Mark Balen (golf), Jamie Natalie (gymnastics), Fred Norton (baseball, basketball, football and track), Fred “Curlyâ€? Morrison (football) and David Camaione (wrestling) • Women — Regina Oliver (lacrosse), Shandelier Boyd (track and field) and Stacey Gordon (volleyball) The first four-sport varsity letterwinner at Ohio State (baseball, basketball, football and track), Lakesider Fred Norton was a member of the 1916 championship football team as a blocking back for Chic Harley and was the baseball team’s most valuable player in 1917. Norton led the 1917 baseball Buckeyes with a .442 batting average and once scored six touchdowns in one half against Indiana on the gridiron in 1916. After graduation, Norton enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a fighter pilot and died in combat less than a year after graduating from Ohio State. He was inducted into the Sphinx Honorary, the oldest and most prestigious honorary at Ohio State. “Fred Norton’s athletic performance, coupled with his faithful service, made him a perfect hall of fame candidate,â€? said Tony White, Men’s Varsity O president. “As the first letterwinner in four different sports at Ohio State, he has been noted by members of the press as the ‘greatest all-around athlete’ in Ohio State history. Perhaps because he was lost in battle just a year after his graduation he has not received the fanfare many of the other outstanding athletes have been afforded. We are pleased he will now be enshrined in the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame.â€?

The Swingsters performing in PC Riverfront Live will be featuring “The Swingsters” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 23, on North Jefferson Street in Port Clinton. If you think you are hearing music from the Glenn Miller Orchestra or Tommy Dorsey, you’re probably listening to local musicians reincarnation of the Big Band sound. The Swingsters include vocalists, a full contingent of horns including sou-

saphones, clarinets, flutes and the required baritone horn, which makes them more of a Big Band orchestra. There is no admission fee. Riverfront Live is brought to you each Friday night during the summer by Neidecker-Leveck & Crosser Funeral Home, Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Port Clinton.

Battle back with Perry’s luck

LeBron is gone — along with our visions of NBA championships. Chalk it up to Cleveland luck. Or beat those blues with a copy of Chasing Oliver Hazard Perry (Clerisy Press, 2010), by Cleveland’s own Craig Heimbuch. In this hilarious and moving travel memoir, Heimbuch explores his local roots—and how he learned to expect the worst and assume his luck will always be bad. This view has drawn him to Oliver Hazard Perry, hero of the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813, ever since a family trip to the Perry Memorial on Put-in-Bay when he was ten. Perry had good luck in spades — and Heimbuch sets out to grab some of that mojo, driving around Lake Erie and stopping at places associated with the heroic commodore. Along the way he ruminates about his love for the lake and the city, even as his car breaks down, his map misleads him, and his accommodations are less than accommodating. Heimbuch’s book, his first, recently won a Great Lakes/Great Reads award from the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association. It heralds a dynamic new voice in literature, one we can call our own—and always will be one of us. Chasing Oliver Hazard Perry is a love letter to Cleveland and Lake Erie by a very talented and very funny writer. He’s clever enough to clearly see our area—warts and all—and he relishes all of it. His new book will cure the LeBron blues and renew our pride in the place we call home. Craig Heimbuch is an award-winning journalist and graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He is the former managing editor of Cincinnati Gentlemen Magazine and has worked for weekly and daily newspapers in Ohio and Virginia. He is currently the editor-in-chief of ManoftheHouse.com and lives in Southwest Ohio with his wife, Rebecca, and two sons, Jackson and Dylan. Chasing Oliver Hazard Perry may be purchased at bookstores and on the Web at www. ClerisyPress.com
