Conestoga project touts gains BY JOHN SCHAFFNER Publisher What began in January of 2007 as a bit of a brainstorm has now evolved into a significant reality for the residents on the east side of Port Clinton. In the intervening time frame, the area has garnered more than $4.7 million in grants from a variety of sources and have turned a blight-ridden neighborhood into a highly marketable enterprise. Last Saturday was the big day as the residents celebrated their successes with several special events in Lakeview Park, the focal point of the project. It was also an opportunity to market 12 proper-

ties with open houses, touting the neighborhood as close to restaurants and stores and, most of all, Lake Erie. In 2007, the planning team of Dr. Kirk Halliday of the ErieOttawa Mental Health and Recovery Board; Chris Galvin, director or United Way in Ottawa County; resident Dave Mehl; and marketing consultant Cindy Gunderson put together a plan to improve the neighborhood and raise property values, which had fallen dramatically. Another objective was to reduce crime rates and what Halliday called “incivilities” among neighbors. The group held its first meeting

in August of 2007 and learned that the residents in the area surrounding Lakeview Park were not happy. The Ottawa County Community Foundation gave the group $5,000 to get things started. They started collecting data and recruiting community partners. Phase Two involved organizing the chosen neighborhood, bordered by Maple and Lincoln Streets on the east and west and Second and State streets on the north and south. They also went to work writing grant requests. They then began community

FINALE Attraction making last season its best

The American Cancer Society invites the community and visitors to its Celebration of Life from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at Lakeview Park in Port Clinton. Teams at the event will have booths with food, kids’ games, raffles and more. There will be a dunk tank and bouncy houses and Sonny Bozman & Posse, a five-piece country and rock band, will be playing from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be special recognition for cancer survivors, a free skin cancer screening, a silent auction, fire trucks and a raffle for a beautiful hand-made queen-size quilt. The evening will wrap up at 9 p.m. with a luminaria ceremony to honor and remember those who have battled cancer. Money raised for the American Cancer Society has a direct impact in our area. Whether it is through the services of a Patient Navigator who can help cancer patients and their families handle the multitude of issues that arise, or the $19 million dollars in research being done in Ohio universities such as University of Toledo and Case Western Reserve University. For information about the event, contact Rachel Fall, Magruder Hospital, at 419-734-3131, ext. 3363, or Brian Gibson, American Cancer Society, at 1-888-2276446, ext. 5205.

BY TIA WOODEL Editorial intern This will be the last summer for Prehistoric Forest and Mystery Hill. Len and Denise Tieman have owned the family fun center for 15 years and have decided to close in September to follow other interests such as vacationing together and studying the Bible. Len is retiring, and Denise will retire in two years. In 1995, while Len was recovering from cancer, he and his wife drove past the area and decided they could fix it up to create a family attraction. “We decided we could make it work, it could be my positive recovery, and it seems to have worked,” said Len. Prehistoric Forest is a trail through a volcano and 10-acre forest where handmade dinosaurs can be found. Mystery Hill, also on the property, is a fun house that defies the laws of gravity where water runs uphill.

Congrats and thanks to golfers Congratulations to the National Bank of Oak Harbor team of Joe Bires, Chuck Redmond, Phillip Bolte and Brian Priebe who shot an amazing 13 under par to win Monday’s 21st annual Chick Schaffner Memorial Charity Golf Classic at Catawba Island Club. It was a great event with some 30 teams participating, raising nearly $30,000 for Stein Hospice and the Ottawa County Division of the American Heart Association. A big thank you goes out to Brush Wellman — the title sponsor of the event each year. Also thanks to our hearty corps of volunteers that somehow manage to pull

We are sad to report a couple of old friends have passed away. Betty Puffenberger died last week. She was the matriarch of a great family. It is nice to see oldest son and classmate Jim back in town helping us out at the Chick Schaffner Golf Outing Monday. Betty was a great lady and a character in her own right. She may still own some records in the Ottawa County Track Meet. Jean Kresser also passed away last week. Her oldest son Mike is also a classmate

COMMENTARY

The Beacon By VIRGINIA PARK

Beacon Bits

A truly beautiful kickoff to summer

Tonight as I write on Sunday evening (and after nine o’clock), there is still lots of daylight left in the sky. Tomorrow, June 21, is the first day of summer and the day of the most daylight in the northern hemisphere. And to make it all the nicer, this weekend was truly a beautiful one. Long

hours of sunshine, blue skies, nice breezes, clear vistas. Summer is wonderful. nnn

Last week I spent a little time on South Bass Island and it was great there, too, except that the mayflies were out in full force. It was interesting and fun to watch the

reactions of people who had never seen them before. Some people (adults as well as children) are scared of them. I can well understand that. The bugs are big! They do tend to become a nuisance when they land on people’s clothing. I noticed that they seemed to like clothing in light colors and were especially fond of landing on white vehicles. nnn

Father’s Day seems to be a holiday when lots of folks like to go out to eat in restaurants. I saw quite a few families at Phil’s Inn tonight. I also noticed that many people were having cookout parties at home. That reminded me that I’ve been hungry for hot dogs cooked on a grill or over an open fire. Hmmmm. Gotta’ find someone who’s cooking on a grill and get some prepared. Father’s Day is a time when I like to reminisce about my dad, Dale Allen, and also about my father-in-law, Howard Park. Both of them were fellows who worked hard. Dad was good at carpentry, masonry and farming. Howard was excellent at electrical work, plumbing and engine repair. They were both innovative and creative and exceptionally hard workers. And they both helped me a lot. My father-in-law was excellent at sharpening knives and always did that for me. It’s surprising how often a person needs a little help like that and also surprising how much it’s missed when it’s no longer available. nnn

OCTA treats you like family... Thanks, OCTA!

Did you know that setting the blade on your lawn mower higher will help your lawn? Taller grass inhibits the growth of weeds and conserves moisture in the soil. nnn

July is a popular month for exterior painting. And if it’s dry, it’s a good time to paint. But try not to paint in extremely hot temperatures and avoid painting in direct sunlight. So paint at the side of the building that is in shade when possible.

I finally have most of my garden planted — a little later than usual this year. I put in some red beets and hope they do well because I’ve learned that they’re delicious when roasted. To prepare them that way, just cut off the tops and most of the root. Wash them and then toss them in a little oil (with spices, if desired). Line a cookie sheet or roasting pan with foil and bake them until they’re done. Test for doneness by sticking them with a table fork, the same as you would for baked potatoes. Skin them when they are cool enough to handle. These are great eaten hot but may also be kept refrigerated for a cold snack. They taste very different from canned beets. It is something like tasting the big difference between fresh and canned pineapple.

Chautauqua, presented by the Ohio Humanities Council, will be in Ashland July 13-17. This year the actors focus on characters from the 1930s. They are W.C. Fields, Paul Robeson, Eleanor Roosevelt, Orson Welles and Margaret Mitchell. Mitchell wrote the blockbuster novel “Gone With The Wind” for which she received the Pulitzer Prize. Each evening a trained scholar/actor portrays one of the historical figures. For information, call 1-800-293-9774 and talk with Fran or visit www.ohiohumanities. org. Chautauqua also makes a stop in Marysville July 27-31. Either Ashland or Marysville is close enough for people from our area to travel there. It’s an educational as well as entertaining performance.

Lynn Jones, called about the Cruise-Ins taking place every Friday night at the Knoll Crest shopping plaza. This is in the large parking area just off Ohio 163 near where Bassett’s Grocery Store is located. All cars and drivers as well as visitors are welcome. Time is 5 p.m. to “whenever.” Currently there are about 50 interesting old or antique or classic cars to see weekly. It is likely there will be more as summer rolls on. For information, call Jones at 419-732-0261. nnn

I’ve read about several artistic events coming up nearby that sound great. Here are three of them: • “Between Fences” is a traveling exhibit designed by the Smithsonian Institution. It will be at Hoover Auditorium at Lakeside June 20-July 10 and will be open 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. Monday through Saturdays before the evening performances at Hoover. On Sunday, the time will be 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will be no show on July 4. A free 90-minute pass is available at the gate to get into Lakeside but must be validated by a museum docent. The exhibit will appear in only eight Ohio communities. It sounds very interesting, showing historic fences, memorabilia and explaining the numerous reasons fences have been built in America. • The Toledo Museum of Art is offering a revealing look at the museum’s permanent collection from a very different perspective. Called “Out of Sight,” this exhibit will show sides of an object not normally visible to museum visitors. The bottom of a unique vase, an inner page of a book, the interior woods of a cabinet are among the highlighted objects. For example, a punch bowl created by Libbey is displayed so that it enables visitors to see where a fox is hiding in an engraved fox hunt scene. Probably the most fascinating object in this exhibit will be the reverse side of Picasso painting entitled “Woman with a Crow.” It actually also has a watercolor painting on the back and it will be hung so that the watercolor painting is visible. In addition to seeing this assembled display, visitors will also be directed to a few objects in the museum that, because of their size, will remain in their usual location. A cabinet organ built about 1785, perhaps by artisan Johannes Strumphler, will be displayed with its cabinet doors open to reveal the workings of the instrument inside. This exhibit continues through Aug. 29 and is in Gallery 18. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Call 419-255-8000 or visit www.toledomuseum.org for information.

Jean Cihla called to invite everyone to come to the rummage and bake sale at her church. It’s 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 25- 26. The location is First United Church of Christ, 802 Prairie, Marblehead. Clothing, household goods, appliances, furniture, linens and delicious baked goods will be offered. You’re sure to find a good bargain. nnn

Celebrating our 80th Anniversary

The Ladies Auxiliary of the local Red Cross unit is hosting the event. All women are invited to join the group and may contact Linda Snyder at 419-797-6606 for information. The auxiliary’s annual event theme will focus on the 1960s TV situation comedy, “Gilligan’s Island.” There will be raffles and chances to win many prizes. The donation of $100 will cover the cost of a seated dinner and a chance on the reverse raffle. Otterbein adds new aviaries

Otterbein North Shore Life Enrichment Coordinator Denise McCubbin enjoys a loving moment with Ruthie the peach-faced lovebird and golden retriever Spike.

Otterbein North Shore Retirement Living Community is dedicated to creating an environment that all residents will thrive in and enjoy. What better way to do this than to include man’s best friend and a few other critters onto campus? Otterbein’s Life Enrichment Coordinator Denise McCubbin is committed to creating a home-like atmosphere on the retirement campus located in Danbury Township. “Everything is about living your best life here, making the most of every day,” she said. One of the most enjoyable features at ONS has always been the aviary in assisted living. It was purchased with funds donated by a resident, who also left a large bequest to ONS for aviary maintenance, benevolent care and activities. Maintained by the Aviary Company in Fremont, owner and breeder Laura Miller arrives once a week to clean the aviary, change the décor and do a short program for residents, which is how they met Ruth-

ie. Ruthie is a peach-faced lovebird that started visiting when she was two weeks old. Miller brings in baby birds and ONS residents help them to become familiar with humans. It is a highly anticipated weekly event for the residents. Ruthie is 3 months old now, and it’s not unusual to see Ruthie on McCubbin’s shoulder at any time during the day. The bequested funds have allowed ONS to purchase two additional aviaries for the apartment wing and the Jane Baker House. Each aviary has a variety of birds in it including Grass Parrots, Gould and Owl finches, assorted other finches and canaries. “We’re interested in color and visual impact. The birds are stunning to look at,” added McCubbin. Birds in all three aviaries have produced babies as well. In 2009 there were 92 live births, which is another part of Miller’s weekly regimen. She uses a flashlight to show the residents inside the eggs, and they watch her feed formula to the babies, if their

moms aren’t taking care of them. Always nearby, Spike is a 15-yearold golden retriever, trained at the Ohio State University as an occupational therapy dog. The woman he lived with and cared for passed away, and her daughter thought a retirement community a natural fit for Spike. Not a day goes by that Spike doesn’t give and get plenty of love. He stays with McCubbin in the evenings, but when he arrives each morning he goes room to room in assisted living to check on each resident. “Not all residents are ‘dog people,’ but Spike knows who loves him and he stops by to say good morning to those individuals,” said McCubbin. ONS also has an aquarium and a bunny rabbit. Otterbein North Shore is a Continuing Care Retirement Community offering independent and assisted living, as well as short-term rehabilitation in the Jane Baker House. Firelands Presbyterian Church will present New York City’s Good Pennyworths Quartet, a Renaissance vocal ensemble with lute accompaniment, performing the staged concert “Songs from Shakespeare: True Love Never Did Run Smooth.” The Good Pennyworths have plucked songs and dialog straight from Shakespeare’s plays and woven them into new musical tales about fools, lovers and life in these “giddy-paced times.” Early music fans and Shakespeare lovers alike will enjoy this lively blend of theater and lute songs featuring songs by John Dowland, Robert Johnson, Thomas Morley and others, with dialogue and lyrics by the Bard himself — at least those lyrics he didn’t “borrow” from existing songs. Auxiliary donates tree in memory of Howard B. Magruder On Wednesday, June 9, Magruder Hospital’s Auxiliary held a small ceremony to dedicate a Chanticleer Pear tree in honor of the hospital’s founder, Howard B. Magruder. The tree is now planted outside of the outpatient entrance on the south side of the hospital. Magruder was both a lawyer and a prominent banker in the Port Clinton area. In May of 1937, Magruder executed a trust agreement to build a hospital in Port Clinton to serve the medical needs of Ottawa County residents. He died the following month on June 9, 1937. Having been childless, Magruder and his wife, Myra, left their entire estate to the construction of the hospital. Estimates at that time put the estate as high as a quarter million dollars. Upon Magruder’s death, the trustees of the trust at the time, Dr. Carl Yeisley and Edwin Neal of Port Clinton and Erwin Efller of Toledo, pro-

ceeded with his wishes. In August of 1940, Magruder Hospital opened its doors to treat patients. Today, the trust still makes an annual monetary donation toward the operations of the hospital. Next to the Chanticleer Pear tree is a plaque donated by Neidecker LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home that reads: “Donated in memory of Howard B. Magruder by Magruder Hospital Auxiliary October 2009.”

The OSS Joint Solid Waste Management District sponsored the fourth annual Earth Camp in Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca counties during the month of June. The one-day camp hosted 186 students entering grades one through six and offered fun activities on recycling topics and lessons on the importance of our natural resources. Camps were held on different days at Lakeview Park in Port Clinton, The OSS Solid Waste District office in Fremont and at Meadowbrook Park in Bascom. Campers were separated into three groups, Planet Protectors, Go Green Gang and Aluminum All-Stars and each group rotated through stations. Team flags were made and carried with pride to each session during the camp. Specific activities included a game that showed how reducing, reusing and recycling can play an important role in extending the life of non-renewable resources, learning about the history of recycling, the importance of reusing materials instead of throwing things away and challenging one another during a recycling obstacle course. Campers took home reusable shopping bags they decorated and recycled flowerpots made out of news-

FOREST from 1A While Len makes the dinosaurs with the help of several employees, Denise works on all of the gardening aspects of the business. Over the years, Prehistoric Forest and Mystery Hill have not only had customers come back, but employees as well. According to Len, some of its employees worked every summer from the time they were 14 until they were 19. The park also employed a student part-time for eight years while he attended college and medical school. “Since they know we’re closing, there have been a lot of people coming in,” said Len. Its current employees are just as upset about losing the business though. “I’m going to miss this place,” said employee Ryan Rawlins. “I’ve come to Prehistoric Forest since I was 3, and after three years of working here, now that it’s closing, I feel like a part of me is leaving too.” Len and Denise are currently adding new dinosaurs to the collection of around 35 even during this last summer. “I want my last year to be a great one,” said Len. The couple does not have plans to sell the business right now. Down the road, Len said they might consider selling if a reasonable offer was made and there was an agreement to keep it a family fun center. “I want to thank all of the local businesses, all of the customers, our family and friends for their support,” said Len. “If I could do it all over again, I would in a heartbeat.” Prehistoric Forest and Mystery Hill is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Labor Day and noon to 5 p.m. on the weekends in September. We have told you in the past about the daughter of former Port Clintonite Jerry Mortus whose 13-year-old daughter Caitlin was diagnosed last year with Burkitt’s lymphoma. That young lady has formed her own organization called “Keep Kids Connected.” Her goal is to help keep kids connected to family and friends while they are undergoing treatment for cancer and other lifethreatening illnesses. The good news is that Caitlyn has been told by her doctors that her cancer is gone and she is currently living cancer free. Her wish is that every kid battling cancer be given a computer to stay connected. She has created a Web Site: www.keepkidsconnected.org. nnn

While we are on the topic, I have received a lot of questions about my brother-in-law Fred Kollmann Jr. He was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor, but his step-daughter just happens to be an oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He had the tumor removed successfully, and is now undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment. His prognosis is very good.

Massage Therapy

The Kenny House - www.portclintonmassage.com In September, Emily Wadsworth joined Stein Hospice as a nurse at the inpatient care center. Friends worried that working at a hospice center might be difficult for Emily, whose cancer was in remission. “Because I have cancer, I should be there,” the 61-year-old Clyde nurse told them. Emily’s career at Stein was brief, but her impact was vast. She served patients and families with compassion and dedication, never satisfied until all their questions were answered. When Emily’s cancer returned and she was no longer able to work, she shifted her attention to other Stein projects. This spring she laid the groundwork for Emily’s Library. A room at the care center will soon hold books, recordings and computers to help educate and comfort patients and families. “I think one of the best gifts you can give a family is the understanding of what is happening,” she explained. Emily joined a Stein committee that was planning a caregiver conference so she could share her experiences from both sides of the bed. And in an effort to further reach out to others, she asked to be part of Stein’s advertising campaign. Emily wasn’t able to complete all her projects. She died April 8 at the care center, receiving the kind of care she once delivered. Stein Hospice helped Emily deal with her death on her terms.

Gamers Club grand opening The Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce’s grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Gamers Club is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 23. Staff at the Gamers Club, located on Oho 53 inside Harbor Light Landing, say the goal is to become “the hottest entertainment venue in town,” coupling games with a chance to win cash prizes. Customers purchase wholesale long distance telephone time on pre-paid cards and receive an equal amount of free sweepstakes points. Points may be used to play on-site computer games to expose winnings, which may be redeemed for cash prizes. “Gamers Club provides a valuable

product, phone time, plus brings an exciting, adult entertainment venue to Vacationland,” said Bill Janowich, president. “Typical customers are middle age (you must be 18 to play) and come from the local community. They enjoy getting out and having fun and in Vacationland we expect the boaters will find us to be ‘the place to go’ when not on the Lake.” Free snacks and beverages are provided daily with more substantial food served on weekends. Hours are 11 a.m. until after midnight seven days a week. For information, contact 437-7347000, e-mail info@GamersClub.us or visit www.GamersClub.US.

Financial Focus

Launch your ‘summertime’ investment strategy Now that summer is officially here, you may be looking forward to vacations, barbecues, ballgames and other events of the season. But even while you’re engaged in these activities, you can’t forget about other aspects of your life — such as your plans to achieve your long-term financial goals. However, your summer activities can actually provide you with some valuable lessons on managing your investment strategy. Here are a few possibilities: • Plan your trip. If you’re taking a long road trip this summer, you’ll need to choose your vehicle, map out your route, determine how far you want to go each day and be quite certain of your destination. And, essen-

tially, the same is true for your investment strategy. You need to choose the right investment vehicles, familiarize yourself with your ultimate goals (such as a comfortable retirement) and chart your progress along the way. • Try to avoid getting burned. If you’re going to spend a lot of time outdoors this summer, you may need to apply some sunscreen. But you don’t have to be exposed to the sun to get “burned” — it can happen in the investment world, too. However, you can help prevent this from happening. How? By building a diversified portfolio. If most of your money is tied up in just one type of investment, and that asset class falls victim to a down-

turn, your portfolio could take big hit. But while some investments are moving down, other may be moving up, so it makes sense to spread your money among a range of vehicles appropriate for your risk tolerance, investment goals and time horizon. Of course, diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss, but it can help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio. • Keep yourself “hydrated.” When you’re outside on hot days, you can lose a lot of fluids, so you need to drink plenty of liquids to remain hydrated. As an investor, you also need a reasonable amount of liquidity. In the severe market downturn of 2008 and early 2009, many inves-

tors found they had insufficient amounts of the type of liquid investments — cash and cash equivalents — that held up better than other, more aggressive vehicles. Furthermore, if you are relatively illiquid, you may have to dip into your longer-term investments to pay for short-term emergency needs. Try to always keep an adequate level of liquidity in your holdings. • Dress for the season. As you go about your summer activities, you won’t always wear the same clothes. On hot days, you might want to wear shorts, but on cool, rainy days, you might need heavier items or even a raincoat. And as you go through life, you may need to adjust your investment approach depend-

ing on your individual financial “season.” For example, early in your career, you might be able to afford to invest more aggressively, as you’ll have more opportunities to recover from the inevitable short-term downturns. As you close in on retirement, though, you may need to take a more conservative approach so that you can lower your investment risk when you need to access your money. So there you have them — some ideas for “summertime investing.” Use them wisely, and they may be of value to you long after summer is over. nnn

MAGRUDER AUXILIARY

‘Golfing for the Goal’ July 19 Magruder Hospital’s Auxiliary is hosting its fourth annual golf outing, “Golfing for the Goal,” Monday, July 19, on the Catawba Island Club golf course. The goal for this year’s outing is helping to fund the all new private inpatient rooms at the hospital designed to incorporate the smart room technology the hospital installed earlier this year. The project also includes the complete renovation of the 2-south wing, which is scheduled to be complete by August of this year. “We decided to put our monies toward this project because it will have a great impact on a large number of community members who choose Magruder for medical care,” said Bob

Hille, chairman for the event. The format for the event will be the same as the prior three years. “This fun event starts with registration and lunch at 11 a.m. followed by skill challenge games at noon and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner and prizes will follow at the CIC.” This year, Hille said the event has attracted a chance to win some big ticket prizes thanks to the support of one individual and several area businesses. “We have some local businesses and a Magruder physician sponsoring chances to win some great prizes. Northern Manufacturing is sponsoring a chance to win a trip to Germany, Edward D. Jones and Bau-

man Auto Center in Port Clinton are sponsoring chances to win a new car on two separate holes. Dr. Carl Steele is donating a champagne cruise for eight on his 54’ sailboat ‘Spirit’ for the winning team,” Hille said. The winning team that enjoyed the cruise on Dr. Steele’s boat last summer had an incredible time. So we are happy to be able to offer this prize again,” he added. Teams are available on a first-come, first-served basis for the first 30 teams. For information on the outing, including sponsor and team registration forms, go to www.magruderhospital.com or call Rachel Fall at 419-734-3131, ext. 3363.

PIB novelist Bob Adamov to release new novel ‘Tan Lines’ at Pirate Fest PUT-IN-BAY — Award-winning island novelist Bob Adamov will be releasing his sixth novel in his island-based mystery adventure series, “Tan Lines,” at Put-in-Bay’s Pirate Fest on South Bass Island on June 25-26. Tan Lines continues the popular Emerson Moore series and Adamov’s string of Lake Erie Is-

land best-sellers which include “Rainbow’s End,” “Pierce the Veil,” “When Rainbows Walk,” “Promised Land” and “The Other Side of Hell.” In Tan Lines, when the president and the Canadian Prime Minister visit the Ohio State University’s Stone Lab on Gibraltar Island for a conference and fishing, the presi-

dent disappears — two days before he stands for re-nomination. When the head of the presidential protection detail accuses Washington Post investigative reporter Emerson Moore of attempting to assassinate the president, Moore escapes and a massive hunt is initiated. Adamov was the featured author at the 2006 Ernest Hemingway Literary Festival in Key West. He was recently named Writer of the Year for 2010

Pirate Fest

in regional competition sponsored by the University of Akron’s Wayne College. His first novel was a 2003 runner up as the top fiction novel in the Great Lakes For information on Tan Lines or any of Adamov’s books, visit www. bobadamov.com or call 330-2897616.

LA cast coming to Port Clinton for dinner theater PORT CLINTON — It is dinner theater time again at The Garden Guest Dinner Theater, and this time there is a special event planned. Brenda Bousliman has arranged for the Los Angeles professional cast of the hit play, Polyester The Musical, to come to town. This was all done by the help of the show’s writer, Phil Olson. Olson is the writer of the popular Don’t Hug Me series.

Musical score was done by Wayland Pickard. Polyester The Musical is the story about the Synchronistics, an over-the-hill ABBA wannabe group, who reunite to perform at a save-the-public-access-TVstation telethon. It’s Mamma Mia meets Spinal Tap. It’s 1979, and the Synchronistics were big — big enough to be on Johnny Carson. Their hit single,

“Better Together,” had risen to No. 2 on the Billboard charts. Then something terrible happened that drove the group apart. And now, 20 years later, they’re back together to perform at the WKLN public access TV station telethon. The world premier of this musical took place in November 2009 in Los Angeles and features 16 original songs including, “The

Funk Train” and “Bump Your Booty Rump.” The cast includes Pamela Donnelly (One Life To Live, All My Children); Christopher Fairbanks (House, Medium, Jimmy Kimmel Live); Gwendolyn Druyor (Appeared in the award-winning children’s video, That’s How We Build a House); Robert Moon (The Sound of Music, Miss Saigon and Jekyll and Hyde); and Jim

Staahl (Second City Theater, the Tonight Show, Mork and Mindy, King of Queens, Max Dugan Returns, Curb Your Enthusiasm). The production is scheduled for Aug. 18-22 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Port Clinton. Ticket are $35 and include dinner, show, tax and gratuity. Reserve early as only 100 tickets per performance will be sold. Call Brenda at 419-960-1681.

Guests will board the Jet Express for a cruise around the islands.

Enjoy food, drinks on cruise around islands The Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce has planned a celebration Thursday, July 15, on the Jet Express. The sightseeing cruise will depart Port Clinton at 7:30 p.m. and cruise past the Catawba shoreline, Marblehead and the historic lighthouse, then continue on past the islands of Kelleys, Rattlesnake, Sugar, Green and the Bass before enjoying the sunset on the way back into Port Clinton. The Jet will be traveling at high speed to reach the different points of interest and then slow down to enjoy the sights. Live entertainment, signature hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar with top-shelf cocktails and wine will be featured. The cost is $40 per person or $70 per couple. The cruise is sponsored by the Jet Express and benefits the Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce. Rain date is scheduled for Thursday, July 22. Space is limited. RSVP to the Port Clinton Area Chamber at 419-734-5503 or e-mail pcacc@cros.net.
