4-H invades area classrooms

“I’m proud to be a part of Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory

4-H programs aren’t just found in traditional 4-H community clubs, they are found in local schools. Presently, 4-H School Enrichment involves teachers and students in kindergarten through fifth grade in Ottawa County. Together they use 4-H in science, math, language arts, art, social studies and social skills activities. 4-H staff uses 4-H curriculum to enhance students’ learning through handson activities. This allows students to apply what they learn to real life situations and increase students’ interest and understanding of science, math and develop life skills. Some of the most popular programs in the 4-H School Enrichment program include: • Rockets Away — Students learn about motion, gravity and aerodynamics. Students make and launch their own 2-liter bottle rockets. • Weather Together — Educate youth about the wonders of weather through hands-on activities. • Character Counts — Engage students in activities to teach responsibility, respect, caring, trustworthiness, fairness and citizenship to enhance personal development.

James “Jim M. Recker Port Clinton Chapel Manager, Licensed Funeral Director

We welcome Jim Recker back to our family, and to the Port Clinton community. He became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in 1998 and has gained valuable work experience over the years at other funeral homes. However, Jim recently returned to Port Clinton to re-join the Walker family because of their strong commitment to quality and service. He and his wife, Lisa (Ling), an Ottawa County native and licensed funeral director herself, are both committed to the value of funeral service. They have two children Madeline and Michael, and are members of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

“Unique Services Celebrating Unique Lives Rebecca Maenle, 4-H Program Assistant, instructs an activity with Put-in-Bay students on air density to teach about the layers of the atmosphere for the Weather Together program.

• Digging Those Dinosaurs — Students learn facts about dinosaurs, fossils, and even get to eat like dinosaurs. • Bubble Mania — Classroom students

bubbles and finish by experimenting with bubbles. • The Incredible Egg (ChickQuest) — Students hatch baby chicks in the classroom using an incubator while learning about embryology. This March through May, approximately 10 classrooms in the county will participate in the Incredible Egg program using the ChickQuest curriculum from The Ohio State University. Through the program, youth hatch chicks in their classroom using an incubator supplied through Ohio State University Extension’s 4-H program. Students become familiar with the parts of an egg, its nutritional value and how the egg develops into a chicken. The program also includes hands-on activities to extend the knowledge that the students have gained. Candling the eggs during incubation, observing the stages of a developing embryo and watching the fertile egg hatch are only a few of the fascinating activities in which students participate. For information on these educational programs or to learn more about 4-H, contact Rebecca Maenle at 419-898-3631 or email maenle.7@osu.edu. Check out The Ohio State University Extension website at www.ottwa.osu.edu and to see what services are available to residents of Ottawa County.

Scholarships available to graduating seniors COLUMBUS — State Sen. Karen Gillmor (R-Tiffin) recently announced more than 260 scholarships now available to graduating high school students planning to attend one of Ohio’s career colleges and schools. These scholarships will help provide students with the education and training needed to pursue a career in fields such as business, legal and medical technologies, criminal justice and computer technology. “Ohio’s career and technical schools offer a number of programs that provide students with the skills they need in order to succeed in today’s high-tech, global economy, Gillmor said. “I would encourage all interested students to apply for these scholarships, as they will enable them to obtain education and training at a reduced cost. Scholarships may cover one-half tuition or a specific dollar amount. The scholarships are provided by the Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools at no cost to the state. Individuals interested in applying need to obtain a nomination form from the student’s guidance office. Students residing in the 26th Senate District can send their nomination forms, along with a school transcript, to Senator Gillmor at the Ohio Statehouse, 1 Capitol Square, Ground Floor, Columbus OH 43215. Scholarship applications must be submitted by April 1, and recipients will be notified no later than May 2. Interested students can a complete listing of participating schools as well as eligibility requirements by contacting their high school guidance counselors or by visiting www. ohiocareercolleges.org/Scholarships.html.

Port Clinton Schools Set Makeup Day Schedule Because of the number of school closings, the Port Clinton City School District, like many others in the area, have used four calamity days. The State of Ohio allows for three days this year. The state has changed back to five calamity days, however, that does not take effect until the 2011-12 school year. While both the House and the Senate have proposed language that would restore two calamity days to school districts for the current 2010-11 school year, this has not been passed. When planning the 2010-11 school calendar, the district originally established Feb. 21 as the first make-up day if the district went beyond the three calamity days provided by the state. The Board of Education voted on Monday, Feb. 7 that all make-up days will be added to the end of the school year. Since the school district currently has one day to make up, June 2, 2011, will be the last day for students under the current three-calamity-day rule. “While the current law still calls for three days rather than five, there is a chance it could be changed. Given this information, I made the recommendation to our Board of Education that Presidents Day not be used as a calamity makeup day for the 2010-11 school year said Superintendent Patrick Adkins. “Each calamity day from this point on would add one day to the end of the school year unless there is further legislation from the State of Ohio.
