Daniel Craig A license to thrill Every man wants to be him; every woman to be with him - The name is Bond -James Bond. Words by Nicky Kemp
Steely-blue-eyed Daniel Craig is back to seduce us in his third incarnation as Secret Agent 007 in Skyfall, the 23rd Bond film set for release 26 October. Originally a controversial choice to play Ian Flemmings’ fictional national treasure (“The Name’s Bland - James Bland” The Daily Mirror ran as their front page headline, 15 October 2005), Craig returns to bury his critics having also recently signed a reputed £20milion contract to star in the next two movies. “Everybody needs a hobby” our captive lothario quips in the latest trailer, “So what’s yours?” asks treacherous villain Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) “Resurrection” states a defiant Bond. Though initially greeted with scepticism, Craig’s 2006 debut in Casino Royale was highly praised – most notably perhaps, by former Bond favourite Sir Sean Connery who said on The South Bank Show that Craig was “fantastic, marvellous in the part”, adding he really gets the “danger element” to Bond’s character. Craig’s intense performance earned him a BAFTA Award nomination for best Actor and the film went on to become the highest grossing Bond film to date - a $600 million box office hit. Quantum of Solace starring Bond Girl Gemma Arterton, born and raised in Gravesend, Kent, followed two years later – and proved almost as popular. The detailed plot of Skyfall remains a heavily guarded secret – possibly locked away somewhere deep in the vaults of the real MI6 - but the trailers have been nothing short of epic and provided us with some idea of what to expect. The story focuses on Bond’s boss; M, a role reprised by Dame Judi Dench, who endangers undercover agents around the world when she misplaces important MI6 Intel. James Bond is reportedly killed in action and his heavy-hearted boss struggles to write an obituary: “What do you say about a man like that?” MI6 is attacked, forcing M to relocate the agency. Consequently, her authority and position is challenged by Gareth Mallory (Ralph Fiennes); the new 14 SCENE
Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee. Compromised from both inside the agency and out, who can M rely on to track down the threat, no matter what the personal cost? Queue Bond: “007 reporting for duty” M: “Where the hell have you been?” Bond: “Enjoying death!” Aided only by Field Agent Eve (Naomie Harris), Bond follows a trail taking him from London to the South China Sea, leading him to the mysterious peroxide-blond Silva whose lethal and hidden motives have yet to be revealed. “How much do you know about fear?” asks femme-fatale new Bond Girl Severine (Berenice Marlohe) Bond: “All there is” Severine: “Well not like this… not like him!” Skyfall is directed by Sam Mendes, best known for American Beauty, which earned him the Academy and Golden Globe Awards for best Director in 1999. Actor and Director first met on the set of Mendes’ acclaimed film Road to Perdition in 2002 when Craig was cast in the role of Connor Rooney, the angry son of Paul Newman’s Irish mobster patriarch. Craig is said to be more excited about Skyfall than Quantum of Solace. He was quoted in The Guardian in November last year as saying it was going to be “Bond with a capital B!” Mendes added: “I’m incredibly excited to be doing it and it has, I think, all the elements of a classic Bond movie.” Bond purists will undoubtedly welcome the first appearance of Q (Ben Whishaw) in the Craig Bond films, along with the return of beloved Bond gadgets. Although Craig’s performance in Skyfall is probably one of the most highly anticipated of any film to be released this year, it is true to say that the actor’s rise to fame hasn’t exactly been meteoric. He comes from humble beginnings, born in Cheshire, England in 1968 to his mother; an art teacher and father; a Merchant Navy midshipman turned pub landlord. His parents divorced when he was just four years old and shortly after, he moved to Liverpool to live with his mother and sister. He began acting in school plays age 6 and claims visits to Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre as a kid was one of the major influences for him attending the National Youth Theatre. He went on to study at London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 1991 and begun his early career on the stage. Craig’s early on-screen performances were in the films The Power of One, A Kid in King Arthur’s Court and Elizabeth. He also appeared on television in Heartbeat, Sharpe’s Eagle, Zorro and perhaps most memorably as ‘Geordie’ in the BBC’s 1996 drama Our Friends in the North. His appearances in British films Love is the Devil, The Trench and Some Voices attracted the industry’s attention and British Independent Film Award nominations, leading to bigger roles such as Angelina Jolie’s rival and love interest in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Mendes’s aforementioned Connor in Road to 16 SCENE
Perdition. He went on to achieve European recognition and Best Actor Film Award nominations playing lead roles in The Mother with Anne Reid, indie hit Layer Cake co-starring Sienna Millar and Enduring Love with Rhys Ifans. It was only when chosen as the sixth actor to play the role of Bond, replacing Pierce Brosnan, that Craig achieved international fame. If he hadn’t landed the part as the worlds’ most famous double agent, it’s highly possible he would have ended his career in anonymity, toiling in critically acclaimed but unacknowledged roles - but now he is poised to be one of the biggest stars of his generation, not to mention one of the greatest sex symbols. The release of Skyfall co-insides with the 50th anniversary of the Bond series, with the 5 October being designated Global James Bond day, marking the inaugural screening of the first film Dr No in 1962. As part of the celebrations, Christie’s is hosting a charity auction selling off 50 lots of Bond memorabilia, including Craig’s infamous powder-blue nylon La Perla trunks that he so generously sported in Casino Royale leading to that notorious beefcake image. They have been conservatively estimated at between £3,000 and £5,000. And Ladies - Craig reportedly worked hard to beef up again for his sex scenes in Skyfall… Oh James!

that the parties may adopt on a rent-free basis, but covering rates, insurance, utilities and any other costs (such as service charges) for the “meanwhile” period.
Reducing red tape
The reduction of red tape, planning restrictions and legal constraints are also seen as key to creating the new sustainable high streets of the future. In her recent review, Mary Portas set out 28 recommendations including extending permitted development rights to make it easier to change the use of commercial properties, a more proactive use of local authorities’ statutory powers and promoting “a contract of care” between landlords and their commercial tenants.
A fairer balance
Whilst the voluntary code for leasing business premises has long aimed to strike a fairer balance between the respective interests of landlord and tenant, compliance remains patchy. Few landlords volunteer turnover rents or monthly rental payments yet.

It is a tenants’ market on the high street and business owners should be bold as there has never been a better opportunity to be innovative in lease negotiations. Enamel is the hard surface of a tooth. Erosion is caused by acid in food and drinks that can eat away at the enamel of teeth. Sensitivity of the teeth may be a sign that you may have tooth erosion. Teeth can become yellow in colour as the dentine of the tooth starts to show through the enamel. The surface of the tooth takes on a transparent look or greyish colour. To stop any further erosion of teeth it is advisable to wait at least an hour after eating acidic foods before cleaning your teeth as the acid can make the enamel soft and it can be brushed away. It is also advisable to use a straw when drinking carbonated and sugary drinks. To prevent this it is better to avoid fizzy and acidic drinks and foods. If teeth have worn a lot they can be restored with white fillings, veneers or crowns if very severe. Dr Jas has treated thousands of erosion cases.

Kent is historically known for its beautiful countryside, flowers, landscapes and much more. It has often been referred to as ‘The Garden of England’. But what about its darker more haunting side...
HALL PLACE A manor house has existed on this site as far back as 1241. The current house dates back to 1540 and is owned by the local council. The original house was owned by Sir Thomas atte Hall. The ghost of his wife, Constance, tells the story Ghost Story: I loved my husband very much. We were so happy together. One day he was out hunting stag and I was watching from the house. Without warning one of the stags attacked and killed him. I could not believe my eyes. I ran to the white tower and, blinded by grief, I threw myself off. I could not contemplate a life without my husband. I still grieve to this day and you may see me, walking about wringing my hands in despair. Hall Place, Bourne Road, Bexley, DA5 1PQ IGThAM MOTE This moated manor house built in 1340 was home to the Selby family from the late 16th Century to the middle of the 19th Century. This is Dame Dorothy Selby’s story. Ghost story: I sent a letter to Lord Monteagle and told him not to attend Parliament on 5th November 1605. I had to warn him, otherwise he would have been killed. This led to the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot and supporters of Guy Fawkes blamed me for its failure. They locked me in a small secret room in this house and left me to die. My bones were only discovered at the end of the 19th Century by some workmen. Although you cannot see me, if I am around you will feel a distinct chill in the air; especially in the tower. Rochester castle The castle was constructed around 1090 by the Bishop of Rochester. It saw action several times over the years and lay in ruins for 11 years following a battle in 1215. Lady Blanche de Warren’s ghost tells the story, “We were defending the castle against the Black Prince, Simon de Montfort. My husband to be, Ralph de Capo, led the battle against the King’s enemies. One of the rebel’s men, Gilbert de Clare, was a rejected suitor of mine and he still bore a grudge. During a brief lull in the fighting to mark Easter Sunday, he sneaked into the castle. His Armour was similar to Ralph’s and he wasn’t challenged. Fear filled my heart as he approached me at the top of the keep. He was so angry. I fought hard against him and tried to push him away. Ralph saw my plight and, being an excellent bowman, fired an arrow at de Clare. The arrow struck de Clare’s armour but bounced off and went straight into my heart. I died instantly.” Castle Hill, Rochester, ME1 1SW Scotney Castle A 13th century moated castle. In 1259 the castle was held by Walter de Scotney, steward to the Earl of Gloucester. Later it passed into the hands of the Darrell family. Revenue officials found out that Arthur Darrell was a smuggler. This is a revenue officer’s story, “I was just doing my job. He was a smuggler and what he was doing was illegal. We went to the castle knowing there would be trouble. Several raids by officials had ended in fighting; this time was no different. During the violence, one of the Darrells attacked and killed me; I think it was Arthur. He threw my body into the moat, hoping it wouldn’t be discovered. I’m still here, seeking retribution. Sometimes you’ll see me rise from the moat and hammer at the door of the castle.” Lamberhurst, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, TN3 8JN Chislehurst Caves The caves at Chislehurst are a labyrinth of man made tunnels forming a maze covering over six hectares thirty meters below the woodlands above. They were dug for chalk used in lime burning and brick-making for the building of London, also for flints to fire the tinderboxes and flintlock guns of years ago. First open to the public in the start of the 20th century as a showplace, the guides told the Victorian history of Druids, Romans and Saxons, smuggling and murder. The last 100 years has added munitions storage for the Woolwich Arsenal in the 1914-18 war, mushroom growing in the 1920’s & 30’s and becoming an underground town as one of the largest deep air-raid shelters in the country, protecting over 15,000 people at the height of the blitz. how to carve scary pumpkins
S
tep one is to choose your pumpkin. Pumpkins can range in size anywhere from tiny to humongous. Medium sized ones work best for most stencils that you’ll make or buy. Very large pumpkins can be carved with elaborate designs and used as “center pieces” on your porch or tables. Small pumpkins work fine for carving traditional faces they can be done fast and you can have many of them scattered about for parties,
haunts or up your sidewalk as a lighted pathway. For standard carving without a stencil, decide if it should be tall and narrow, or more rounded, based on your ideas. Select pumpkins that are uniformly orange meaning that are ripe, have no bruises, cuts or nicks. If you will be using a stencil to carve your pumpkin, select a pumpkin that is large enough and as close to the same shape as the pattern you’re going to carve. It should be as smooth as possible, and free of scratches, dents or gouges.
Finally, visualise the face or image you want to carve, use your knife to carefully cut out the individual parts of the face or you can pre-marked the pumpkin by using a Crayon to draw the face onto the surface of the pumpkin and cut through the lines you drew. When you are finished cutting, carefully push out the pieces to view the final results. Make sure that you have scrapped the bottom of the pumpkin flat, so that the candle will sit level in the pumpkin. Candles have been the age old method of illuminating Jack O’ Lanterns since, well, forever. Regular Votive candles, placed in clear glass candle holders are safer, brighter and last a lot longer than exposed candles. For small candles you may want to use the small tea-light candles or you can use Glow Sticks for an eerie effect.
The second step is carving your pumpkin. Use a long, thin bladed knife, cut out the top of the pumpkin around the stem. The hole should be large enough to allow you to scoop out the guts (seeds and stringy membrane) by hand and with a large spoon. Generally, the size of the hole should be about two-thirds the diameter of the pumpkin. While you cut a round circle out, you’ll find that cutting a five or six sided opening will work best. As you cut out the top hole, angle the knife so that the lid and hole will be cone shaped. This will prevent the lid from falling into the hole then scrape the inside walls clean. Annabel’s Crunchy Bourbon Cupcakes Recipe Fetch a jug and mix the wet ingredients together. Pour the mixture into the mixer and blend until all lumps have disappeared. Open a packet of Bourbon biscuits and resist the temptation to nibble. Remember, ladies do not graze. Crush the biscuits into small crumbs with a sturdy rolling pin and stir into this mixture. When everything is mixed together, divide into twelve cupcake cases. Bake for 20 minutes. Just enough time to prepare the icing and wipe the sides.
Crunchy Bourbon Cupcakes Dry Ingredients • 100g plain flour • 20g cocoa powder • 140g caster sugar • 1 half-teaspoon baking powder • A pinch of salt • 40g unsalted butter Wet Ingredients • 120ml full fat milk • 1 egg • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 4 Bourbon biscuits plus extra for topping
Cream the icing sugar and butter with a fork until smooth. Crush two more Bourbon biscuits and add to the icing. After 20 minutes test the cakes with a fork to ensure they are cooked (prick with a fork, it should emerge dry). Remove from the oven and allow to cool, melted icing is not attractive by anyone’s standards. Decorate the cakes using a piping bag with a large star nozzle; add a whole biscuit to decorate. Serve with afternoon coffee or black cherry Martinis. Remove apron and bask in the glory of a fabulous bake.
Topping Ingredients • 80g butter • 250g Icing sugar • 2 more Bourbon biscuits Method Put on your freshly laundered apron. A wellpresented cook achieves a better bake. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C/350°F (gas mark 4) Place the dry ingredients into this mixture and whiz until the texture resembles sand. Wine & Dine Scene Style POT ROAST RED LEG PARTRIDGE with crispy pancetta, potato and savoy cabbage rosti, puy lentils & red wine jus By Nick Constantine - Plaza Mediterranean Bar And Grill, Locksbottom Ingredients: • 2 Partridges • 4 Thick slices of pancetta • 1 Banana shallot • Puy lentils • Olive oil • Salt • Freshly ground pepper • Fresh rosemary
Method: Wash through out the partridges and let them drained out. In an open pot add two tablespoons of olive oil and heat until hot. Start to pan sear/ roast the partridges to medium rare, add seasoning and the fresh rosemary for extra taste. Rest the partridges to cool down and remove the breast and leg on both sides in one. Add the bones back to the pan with the rosemary, some red wine and reduce down for 30 minutes. Add stock to thicken the sauce and pass through a sieve. COOKING THE LENTILS: Wash Lentils. Chop the shallots very fine. Add a bit of olive oil in a pan, add the shallots and fry for two minutes, add the lentils and stir together add stock as required, cook for 20 minutes till lentils are soft. MAKING THE ROSTI: Grate two good size potatoes and drain excess water, fine chopped the savoy cabbage and cook for two minutes, drain allow to cool and mixed together with the potato and Seasoning. Add some melted butter mixed well and add in a still ring. Add some olive oil in a frying pan, bring to high temperature and add the rings in the pan pressing down with a spoon, turned the other side and do the same on a low heat allow 2 minute on each side. SERVING: Preheat the oven and warm up the partridges, add the lentils in the centre of the plate with the rosti add the partridge with the pancetta on top and add the red wine jus.

Conceived and designed at Aston Martin’s Gaydon HQ, the monocoque, or ‘tub’, has been built in partnership with Multimatic (MTC). As world leaders in carbon composite technology, advanced vehicle analysis and dynamic simulation, MTC brings unrivalled specialist capabilities to the exacting challenge of the One-77 programme. Employing the classic formula of double wishbones at each corner, the One-77 features inboard suspension front and rear, with pushrods employed to transfer vertical suspension movements to the horizontally mounted spring/damper units. A practice taken directly from racing car design, the main advantages of inboard suspension are a reduction in unsprung weight and the ability to package the suspension components more effectively. The dampers are fully adjustable and feature

advanced Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) technology; a world-first for a road car application. These special valves are state-of-the-art even at the highest levels of motorsport, and use high-precision machined components to enable the shock-absorbing characteristics of the damper to be changed without having to remove them from the car, as is the norm. Underlining the truly bespoke nature of the One-77, once delivered to its owner, the car’s suspension characteristics will be precisely set-up by Aston Martin engineers to suit their exact requirements, from settings suitable for the ultimate long-distance GT, to a machine capable of conquering the Nürburgring Nordschleife. While functionality and efficiency are paramount in the design and construction of the One-77’, so too is aesthetic beauty. To this end every single component has been crafted from the finest materials with absolute attention to detail. From the mesmerising weave of the glossy carbon fibre tub and the abstract, sculptural
beauty of the dry sump’s oil reservoir, to the unerring precision of the billet machined aluminium suspension mounts, the One-77’s rolling chassis is an automotive masterpiece. Naturally, such a spectacular chassis demands – and gets - an equally exceptional drivetrain. It comes in the form of an immensely potent 7.3-litre, naturally aspirated V12 engine. Thanks to the adoption of a dry-sump oil system the engine is mounted 100mm lower than in any previous V12-engined Aston Martin road car, which helps keep the One-77’s centre-ofgravity as low as possible. To further aid agility and endow the One-77 with progressive handling and stable, predictable on-limit behaviour, the engine is also mounted 257mm aft relative to the front wheel centreline. Wearing Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres (255/35 ZR20 front, 335/30 ZR20 rear) developed specifically for the One-77, all 700+bhp is transmitted to the road through the rear wheels via a new six-speed gearbox. Controlled via column-mounted paddles behind the steering wheel, this robotised sequential manual is a new generation of Aston Martin’s familiar transmission. Though it is made specifically for the One-77 and features specially strengthened internals to cope with the tremendous power and torque, the lessons learned in its development will ultimately find their way into the company’s series production models. It’s a mark of the inherent capabilities of Aston Martin’s acclaimed lightweight Carbon Ceramic Matrix brake technology that it has been used as the basis for the One-77’s braking system. The internals of the calipers have been re-engineered to transmit less heat from the brake pads into the brake fluid, while the discs themselves have been developed to ensure the maximum possible contact area between the face of the disc and the brake pads for improved stopping
power. Due to the One-77’s increased performance, special attention has also been paid to brake cooling, as the brakes have less time to cool between bursts of acceleration. With a projected weight of 1,500kg the One-77 will occupy the very highest echelons of road car performance. Top speed is confidently predicted to be in excess of 200mph, with a 0-60mph time in approximately 3.5sec. Perhaps more importantly, thanks to the purity of a front-engined, rear-drive layout, the responsiveness and immense tractability of a naturally aspirated V12 and the low mass, highrigidity properties of a carbon fibre chassis, the One-77 promises a driving experience of unrivalled intensity and excitement while representing the world’s most desirable automotive art form. This month, SCENE catches up with Barry Woodley PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND? I left school in 1974 and entered Lloyds Of London as a trainee underwriter. After a few years I realised that The City was not fulfilling my creative urges. I tried some home study design courses, and then had my first real breakthrough when my mother, Josie, who had always been an entrepreneurial figure, came home one evening and casually announced that she had agreed to purchase the local wallpaper shop as the owner was retiring! This was around the time that companies such as Sanderson, Laura Ashley and others were transforming the interior decorating market, and combining fabric design with their established wallpapers. Suddenly there was an explosion of talent. Tricia Guild, Osborne and little, Nina Campbell to name but a few were on everyone’s lips. The Kings Road and Sloane Street were the “in” places to visit. HOW DID LOUIS BARON COME ABOUT/WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO CHISLEHURST? Louis Baron was a natural progression from the original wallpaper shop. We moved from Petts Wood to Chislehurst in 1979, and then spent around a year refurbishing the showroom together with the new soft furnishing workrooms on the first and second floors. WHAT’S THE BUSINESS LIKE TODAY? The business today like everything else has had to move with the times. In the early days we were predominantly a Colefax and Fowler outlet, selling the English Country House look. Nowadays furnishings have become less fussy and more streamlined with colours to a degree more masculine. Maybe today’s man has more input than he had three decades ago! WHO ARE YOUR CLIENTS & ARE THEY FAIRLY LOCAL? They are many and varied. On the domestic front we have maintained many of our original clients. What were in the early days, their children, are now clients in their own right. Of course many move away, however, in some cases we have followed them as far as Hampshire, Dorset, Surrey and Sussex as well as Central London. On the commercial front, we have

worked on Hotels, Spas, Offices, and I recall furnishing a barrister’s Chambers in The Temple. TELL US ABOUT YOUR TEAM? Josie, our founder, together with me, head the firm. We have a dedicated soft furnishing department, and are backed up by a team of skilled trades people accumulated over many years. WHERE DO YOUR IDEAS AND INSPIRATION COME FROM? Wherever I go, I study colour, texture and form. Be it in the UK or abroad, I am always interested in a different perspective, and even though I’ve been in this industry for over 30 years am always open to a change in my own outlook. Over the past couple of decades I have drawn inspiration from true Oriental design, which is remarkably simple, and from several trips to Venice which is always a revelation. My passion has always been curtain design, and my appetite stemmed from early collaboration with the late Roger Banks-Pye, who designed the original Louis Baron showroom in 1982 for Colefax and Fowler. He was a true gentleman, who despite his immense talent was a very good listener. Such qualities are rarely found among those with such talent. WHAT’S IN STORE FOR LOUIS BARON IN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS? I would like to develop a successful “Capsule” range of bespoke furniture and introduce it into the showroom as an alternative to our standard ranges. This would promote English made furniture, which would sit alongside our many imported pieces. I would feel uncomfortable answering that one. It’s not for me to measure our success. We are only successful if our clients are truly happy with the service they receive. Therefore only they can answer this. We have been around for some time though, and I guess provided we carry on improving then we may be lucky enough to be here for years to come.
