TIKADI OWNER REACHES LA HEIGHTS In a climax to an eventful year, Michael Mehmet of Tikadi flew to Los Angeles last week, all expenses paid, to work with the legendary John Frieda team at their US West Coast Flagship salon. The Tikadi salon owner was rewarded for his ‘astounding efforts’ and going ‘EXTRA LENGTHS’ as part of John Frieda’s HairRaising campaign that raises essential funds for the work of Great Ormond Street Hospital. ‘I couldn’t believe I’d been given this opportunity to begin with. However, I did enjoy every second of it. There is lots to learn always continually when you’re a hairdresser and that’s something
I believe in very strongly. It was a once in a lifetime experience’ explained Michael. ‘I met some wonderful people, both the John Frieda salon team but also celebrities including Linda Gray, who played Sue Ellen in 80’s series Dallas, and Gywneth Paltrow plus a few others. It’s great though to come home and get back to the salon’ continued Michael. Tikadi have 2 locations in Essex, at Theydon Bois and a recently opened salon in Ongar. The salon raised a staggering amount for HairRaising/Great Ormond Street by staging a Summer Ball in mid 2010.
Chantelle Houghton launches Vardo boutique in Buckhurst Hill’s Queens Road by bringing traffic to a halt and turning up to the shops launch party in a horse-drawn carriage and dressed in a stunning floor-length black gown with gold detailing. On Wednesday 6th April, 16 year old Liam Patel from Wanstead sold a collection of urban art for £13,320 at Dreweatts’ Auction House in London W1 to raise funds for Haven House Children’s Hospice. It took a year and a half to organise the collection, with donations by artists including Matt Small, D*Face, K-Guy, Nick Gentry, Holly Thoburn, Miss Bugs, Agent Provocateur, locally based artists Ryan Callanan (aka RYCA) and Daniel Lumbini. British-born artist Schoony donated a sculpture from his Boy Soldier collection which sold for £2,400.

The Spurs manager is a patron of the charity, which raises awareness of pancreatic cancer so that the survival rate – which was the same in 2010 as it was in 1970 – can be improved in the future.

espite his outwardly, friendly nature and willingness to answer any question thrown at him, it is clear that Mr Paphitis’ time is precious, and understandably so. Coupled with the behind-the-scenes efforts of establishing a major new shopping experience has been a gruelling PR campaign for a man who is not only the brains behind the brand, but the increasingly popular and smiling face. A fifteen minute phone interview the night before the official launch party (in late March) is about as good as it’s going to get. Having built a well-respected retail empire over the last fifteen years, April 2011 marked a fresh chapter in the story of Theo’s business portfolio as he unveiled luxury lingerie brand, Boux Avenue. Representing his third foray into the lingerie market and what has arguably now become his specialist subject, the steely dragon is quietly confident in this his latest venture. “You know, anyone who is ever that arrogant that they never worry about something failing, is going to fail. But of course I’m confident Boux is going to succeed, and it’s going to succeed because of exactly that. I always worry that it’s going to fail so I make sure that it doesn’t,” explains the 51-year-old. Wise words of a man who has made his name and fortune from the success of various businesses which, without his intervention, were otherwise destined to fail. It could be suggested, however, that this is perhaps his most difficult task to date. With the residue of the recession still with us, as Theo so very aptly describes it, the launch of Boux Avenue could be deemed a bold and brave step as other struggling retail chains continue to post poor profit figures and even disappear off the face of our high streets. But Theo is unperturbed, “I’ve been involved in lingerie for many years, with La Senza and Contessa. It’s a subject I know a little bit about and felt there was a real big need in the market for where Boux has positioned itself.”

“And on the basis that I had a willing team, we were able to secure some good sites and we had an image and a view of what Boux should be, we decided to go for it.” And go for it they have. Early April saw an initial six stores open in Glasgow, Manchester, Sheffield, Bluewater, Cardiff and Lakeside with further plans in place to open an additional two stores around the country each month in the coming year. The residues of the recession clearly off the agenda for Mr Paphitis who has certainly signalled his intentions to regain his title as the King of British lingerie. Whether it’s selling bras and knickers at Boux Avenue or pens and pencils from what is Theo’s most synonymous association, Ryman, Paphitis is a self-confessed shopkeeper at heart. “I love what I do, I love retail,” he says with unmistakable passion. “I’m lucky enough to do what I love on a day-today basis. People ask me when I’m going to retire and my answer is always the same. The day I retire will be the day I die.” It is perhaps this drive, along with Theo’s unflinching desire to make money that has made him the successful entrepreneur he is today. Unsatisfied as Chairman of Ryman the stationers and co-owner of Red Letter Days, Theo’s desire to broaden his empire further is a simple illustration of a man with a thirst for success. At the end of 2008, he even explored the possibility of buying the now defunct Woolworths chain as it entered the doldrums of administration. But, recognising it was perhaps more trouble than it was worth, Woolworths was one project Theo had to eventually turn his back on. “It’s one of my biggest regrets,” he says with a pang of remorse. “I would have turned it into a profitable
business again but it was just too unrealistic.” It is this high standard of judgement and business acumen that made Theo an ideal resident expert on the hit show, Dragon’s Den. An excellent addition to the panel in 2005, his prolonged association with the BBC programme has endeared him to a British public who not only recognise his genuine passion for business, but appreciate his nononsense attitude to those without a clue. A Simon Cowell of the corporate world, perhaps. Theo Paphitis has come a long way from his humble roots in Cyprus it would seem. Born in Limassol in 1959, before immigrating to the UK with his family in 1966, Theo’s journey to success was far from plain sailing. Plagued by childhood dyslexia it was clear his skills lay outside the academic classroom, as was evident when establishing what he considers his first profitable retail outlet – the school tuck shop. Still mildly affected by his dyslexia today, Theo attributes the wonders of modern technology to overcoming his trouble with words. “I can’t spell,” he laughs. “I’m absolutely terrible at spelling. But the iPhone is great; it corrects words I’ve misspelt to stop me looking like an idiot.” “As a youngster, if I couldn’t spell a word I’d just find another one that meant the same thing. It didn’t help me with words I couldn’t spell but it definitely improved my vocabulary.” This refreshingly simple common sense and logical competency has enabled Theo to chance his arm in other areas of business. In 1997, he was encouraged to invest in a then, Division Two

football team. Having initially turned down the chance to become financially involved with a sport he had admired for many years, Theo eventually gave in and became Chairman of Millwall Football Club, a position he held for eight seasons. Reminiscing on his time at the helm of the South London outfit, Theo has only fond memories. “It was the best time of my life,” he explains emphatically. “I was only meant to be there for three years but I ended up there for eight. We took Millwall to the FA Cup Final against Manchester United in 2004 and it was fantastic, truly wonderful.” Despite pleasant recollections of his time in football, Theo has no regrets about his decision to stand down from his position at the club. “It was the right time,” he says. “On top of my role at Millwall I was chief executive and chairman at Ryman, Partners, Contessa and La Senza. “
“It was getting to the point where I was doing something I had promised I would never do – allowing my business and other interests to detract from my family life.” Family is a value that resonates throughout a conversation with Theo Paphitis. With numerous references to the infamous ‘Mrs P’ on the telephone and, of course, on Dragons Den, it is no secret that ‘Mr P’ has a loyal and loving family supporting him. Though this is perhaps as far as Mrs P’s role extends when it comes to Theo’s work. “We make a great team,” explains Mr P, “Mrs P does a fantastic job looking after our home and raising our children. I do what I do and Mrs P does what she does and its always been that way. She’s the boss at home and I’m the boss at the office, it works for us.” With some of the stress of launching

an all-new retail brand abated for a while, there is perhaps a chance for Mr P to indulge in some of the finer things in life. Rarely seen without his custom-chrome Maybach (with the unmistakable RYM4N number plate), oft emblazoned with unsightly yet charitable Comic Relief promotion, the wealthy Cypriot has something of a soft spot for motoring. “I’ve got a lot of cars, too many to count. But the good news is,” he says, pausing for effect, “I only drive them one at a time.” It’s hard to dislike Theo Paphitis. With a reported wealth of £160m at his disposal he could perhaps be forgiven for any arrogance or lack of humility. But there is none of that. A conversation with him is light and pleasant and he appears willing not only to promote his brand but to speak candidly about any subject raised, well, nearly any subject. Asked if there is anything else he would like to achieve in the business world or in his personal life, Theo is uncharacteristically vague. “There are so many things I want to do before I die,” he says quite chirpily, “and the sad thing is I know I won’t be able to do all of them.” Any thought of gaining a weird and wonderful insight into Mr P’s bucket list is promptly quashed however. “But I can’t tell you what they are, they’re mine.” Despite his warm and honest nature it would appear that even this dragon has things lurking in the darkest dungeons of secrecy.

Since then we have installed a hydraulic bath for patients, replaced kitchen equipment and many more essentials. We continue to hold functions and fundraising events. In spite of these times of increasing financial pressure we continue to work on behalf of the centre and supported the M.S. Having taken a short break to experience 9-5 life in an office she gradually came back to therapy but in the more holistic sense, training in acupressure/Thai/pregnancy/hot stone and Indian head massage. Abi wanted to create a mobile spa company that not only performed Indonesian based facial rituals with beautiful organic products from Pinks Boutique, but complementing these with fine teas from around the world and delicious organic treats made by her best friend.... And so 9-5 life was left behind and Oolong was born!
Whilst sitting in Abi’s gorgeous glitterball treatment room in Woodford featuring many pieces from Mill Lane Antiques, sipping one of her delicious teas, she fills me in on her recent month long training in Thailand, learning Thai Energy Line and Body Screening. “It was absolutely amazing. Not only did I learn how to release energy lines for a better working body and assess for bad breathing and postural habits, I met some wonderful people and learned a lot about myself.”
Having just received one of Oolong’s amazing Thai massages, I have to agree. Abi’s sensitivity is evident as she treats you, which is refreshing in an age of conveyor belt beauty. She really takes her time with her clients, going beyond the surface and assisting with exercise and nutrition advice. The latter also serves as an architectural element linking the living room and dining room. This version of Duality is a menu featuring class and personality. Duality gets its name from its two-faceted utilisation - living and cooking, design and functionality. This kitchen from the Starck by Warendorf product line is shown here in stainless steel coloured laminate, with shelves in pure white. The white niche is harmoniously highlighted by the surrounding niche frame with integrated grip handle that particularly accentuates the niche, which is designed as an open pass-through in this instance. This emphasises the visual contrast while at the same time spotlighting the practical interplay between the work and storage areas. The Duality kitchen is complemented by the trumpet table, which joins the preparation surface, sink area, hob and eating area and encourages hosts and guests to linger awhile.

SPRING IS DEFINITELY IN THE AIR AND IT’S TIME TO SHAKE OFF THE WINTER BLUES. THIS IS THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN MOST MAJOR HOME IMPROVEMENTS ARE UNDERTAKEN. IF YOU ARE NOT UP FOR A MAJOR OVERHAUL, A FEW STRATEGICALLY PLACED PLANTS MAY BE JUST WHAT YOU NEED TO REVITALISE, BRIGHTEN AND FRESHEN UP YOUR LIVING SPACE. PLANTS ARE A GREAT WAY OF INTRODUCING COLOUR TO THE HOME.

tilise them as you would any accessory. Similar to lighting, plants can transform every room in the house and used in conjunction with clever lighting your plants can be presented as innovative features. Greater visual impact is achieved with three or four of the same (or similar) plants grouped in a signature container. Create a tropical indoor garden in the living room or hallway with four or five different palms and dracaena at differing heights that can coexist harmoniously. Make your bedroom into a temple of rest with the soft white Spathiphyllum Wallisii (peace lily), which is an air purifying plant. Orchids also work well in this space as they are delicate, graceful, calming, and very easy to maintain. As the Orchid is a parasite it requires only one teaspoon of water per week to flourish. A simple bonsai or a dish of succulent plants will provide a low maintenance display that thrives well in the hot, steamy atmosphere of the bathroom. Cacti such as the Echinocactus (mother-in-law’s pillow) bring a taste of the exotic to that space. During spring a group of hyacinth bulbs in a glass container with the roots exposed will also give fragrance and colour to the bathroom. The bright yellow splendour of the narcissi, together with the blue of the muscari and multi-coloured tulips in natural rustic pots, or a homemade container of hollowed out driftwood, will be simply stunning on the windowsill of a kitchen or conservatory. Modern silk plant arrangements can be used as an alternative to living plants for those with allergies, or to brighten a dark hallway where a living plant may not survive.
Select healthy plants with no damage to leaf or flower and check for pests and diseases. Read the care card and find the correct placement in your home for each plant. Care cards detail the information you need to provide the correct amount of water, light and nutrition. Regularly groom your plants by removing any dead flowers or foliage, dust and polish the leaves and lightly spray with water, if appropriate. Don’t be tempted to place every plant on the window sill. Most plants love lots of light, however, not all will thrive on a window sill with hours of direct sunlight. As a general rule the darker the leaf of a plant the less light it requires, variegated or lighter leaf plants need more light. Plants with brightly coloured fruit or flowers usually like direct sunlight. Overwatering remains the most common cause of death for a house plant. Keep the soil moist, not wet, and not sitting in water for long periods of time. Place adequate drainage at the base of a new container prior to re-potting. Dress the top of the soil with moss, decorative bark, gravel coloured stones, glass beads or slate to aid the retention of moisture. Look beyond the aloe vera, mother-in-law’s tongue, monstera, anthurium, peace lily, phalanaeopsis orchid, African violet and kalanchoe and discover the strange exotic beauty of plants such as aechmea, ananas comosus (ivory pineapple), euphorbia ingens (cowboy cactus), maranta tricolour (herringbone plant), medinilla magnifica, heliconia, to name a few. ick Van Wylen, Manager of Loughton’s ‘The Wheatsheaf’ and genuine master of hospitality, dictates a fresh outlook to these formulas. Never swaying from the expectations, the restaurant illustrates everything we envisage from a bistro pub, and then some. Previous to this dream venture of his, restaurant manager, Rick, took to the globe, engaging his dedicated abilities to the top establishments of the world, only recently returning from Dubai. Any explorer could articulate the greatest lessons and experiences are found away from home. Rick, however, has selflessly shared his own experiences with the good customers of ‘The Wheatsheaf’, and the restaurant depicts these cultural diversities in spades. Retaining all the existing charm of the establishment’s predecessor, there is a beautiful duality to the atmosphere.

The first stage of this multifaceted restaurant is the bar; visible on entry it possesses all the trimmings of the orthodox pub; on closer inspection, however, it could be considered the peak of its kind. ‘The Wheatsheaf’ undeniably prides itself on the widest assortment of the finest wines from around the world, an influential addition from Rick’s years of expertise. Bottles dating 30 years plus will be served with a healthy knowledge of their backgrounds by the educated staff, all trained with the idyllic restaurant etiquette. After refreshment from the Bar, take a few steps through the archway and the aforementioned duality of the restaurant becomes clear. An immensely charming, contemporary independent dining area waits. A sizzling log fire and multitude of candlelight warms the atmosphere and sets the tone for the remainder of your dining experience. Nothing quite compliments the environment than the delectable palette of the ‘Crispy Smoked Duck’ appetizer, dressed to the nines with a mango and pear garnish. The duck, a succulent treat, and the dressing forming a flavoursome accompaniment, the presentation as expected is class and beauty to perfection. ‘The Wheatsheaf’ which has already founded a very loyal customer base and will promptly confirm the contented experience of tasting the fine wine with the main course at the restaurant. This vibrant and stimulating dish exudes a sweetened aroma as the mint gravy perfectly moistens the lamb. Chef Jack has fashioned a tender and sweet course that is sure to be a personal desire upon returning visits. When the candles dim, the final spark of the fire crackles and that last mouthful of the rich, fluffy home baked ‘Sticky Toffee Pudding’ is finished, a returning visit will be the first thing on your mind. ‘The Wheatsheaf’ is a truly refreshing getaway from the restaurants of its kind, all at once modern, traditional, sophisticated, comfortable and romantic. Yes. You would have seen the M600 in 2009. But that, dear readers, was a prototype. This, according to Noble, is the final, production-ready supercar set to give the automotive aristocracy
a kick up the splitter. Quick stats - a 4.4-litre Volvo/Yamaha V8 produces three power outputs depending on how many Weetabix you’ve had that morning. The ‘Road’ setting gives you 450bhp, ‘Track’ bumps it up to 550bhp, and ‘Race’ commands 650bhp. Each increases the boost curve and throttle response. It weighs 1,250kgs, and with the
Stig-switch applied (650bhp) gives around 530bhp-per-tonne, prompting the inevitable headline-grabbing reference to something Bugattishaped and fast... Noble reckons it’ll hit 120mph from rest in 8.9 seconds and go on to an estimated 225mph, making it quite a handy bit of kit. SCENE 79
The tub is made from stainless sheet steel, it’s mid-engined and rear-wheeldrive and, though prices haven’t been confirmed, will probably cost something in the region of £200,000. Aesthetics are of course subjective, beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder. However there are certain engineering absolutes, particularly when creating a supercar featuring such massive power and performance, which dictate, in order to have full aerodynamic and cooling efficiency that certain design criteria must be met. It is Noble’s belief that form should always follow function, there is much in the philosophy, ‘if it looks right it probably is right’. Utilising extensive wind tunnel testing they have strived to maintain the form to be as minimalist as possible whilst providing the ultimate aerodynamic and cooling efficiency. Nothing is cosmetic; every element of the shape and design is intrinsic to performance efficacy. 80 SCENE
Noble take great pride in their reputation for the excellent ride and handling of their performance cars. They firmly believe that the chassis is the fundamental foundation of any performance car. This is particularly the case with cars which do not feature a great deal of computer technology. Computer assistance can often mask deficits in the chassis design and it is not until these electronic driver aids are turned off that the flaws are revealed. There is no engineering logic which dictates that precise and effective handling should be to the detriment of comfort and ride quality. Noble believe that an effectively designed and engineered chassis should be able to combine both high speed capability and driver comfort. Their engineering, based on a ‘back to basics’ ethos, devotes a huge amount of time and resources in ensuring that the chassis is as efficient and effective as possible. This is ably demonstrated by the M600, the high speed handling is superb and the ride is both comfortable and smooth.

Tell us a little bit about Sheesh... Sheesh is a family run restaurant specialising in Turkish cuisine. It originally opened four years ago in Queens Road, Buckhurst Hill, before we moved to the site here in Chigwell in January. Dylan Hunt, my cousin, designed the whole place and he’s done an amazing job, we’re all very proud of what he’s achieved. Describe Sheesh in 3 words… Unique. Vibrant. Delicious. What is your role at Sheesh? I’m the Front of House Manager but I’m also in charge of organising events. We had Soprano Bella here on Mother’s Day who posed as waiters & chefs before bursting into operatic song, the customers loved it! I also book the musicians who perform in the upstairs bar area. Tell us more about the bar area... We have a great space above the restaurant where you can have a drink before or after your meal on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening. We have live bands performing on Fridays, Saturdays & Bank Holidays. Your dancing shoes may be required. What’s the best thing about your job? I’ve always worked long hours but when you’re doing it for your family it’s much more rewarding. It’s been fantastic to see a building site transformed into a bustling and successful restaurant and I really enjoy meeting all the customers, I’ve heard some interesting life stories! Any famous faces made an appearance? They have. Marvin from JLS & his girlfriend Rochelle from the Saturdays had a birthday celebration in the Sugar Suite. Kimberly Walsh and Olly Murs have been in and Gino D’Acampo Tweeted that our lamb shish is the best he’s ever had! Quite a compliment from a renowned chef. What dish would you recommend from the menu? My personal favourites are the pan fried squid and King Prawns. But if it’s your first visit you
have to try the Lamb Shish or Karisik Grille (mixed grill). Where else do you like to eat in the local area? Catch on Queens Road is my favourite local restaurant, they have a superb menu and their fish is cooked in Matzo, just the way my Nan used to make it. My local pub is the Cuckfield in Wanstead; my friends and I have spent many a Tuesday night cheating our way through their pub quiz. What do you do to relax? Sundays and Mondays are my days off. On a Sunday morning I like to have a stroll through Columbia Road or Broadway Market– I love that part of town. The rooftop of the Boundary just off Bethnal Green Road is the perfect place to relax with a mojito. My monthly treat is a facial at The Retreat in South Woodford and massage with Maxine at the Relaxation Place. Where do you like to go on holiday? I’m off to Marrakech for the first time in May. Thailand, New York & Italy are favourite destinations of mine but Sydney is like a home from home for me. I travelled around Australia years ago & fell in love with the place.
