What’s happening this january Broken city Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) has a promising career as a New York City cop until the night he is involved in a controversial shooting. Stripped of his badge, but kept out of jail by New York’s popular Mayor (Russell Crowe), he re-makes himself as a private investigator. Times are tough, and when the mayor offers Billy $50,000 to investigate the First Lady’s (Catherine Zeta Jones) extramarital activities, it seems like a straight forward payday. Unfortunately, it quickly becomes apparent that the Mayor is not at all what he seems, and for Billy to achieve redemption he will have to risk everything -- possibly even his freedom. Marilyn Monroe: A British Love Affair

Portraits of the iconic and glamorous movie star by British photographers, including Cecil Beaton, Baron and many others will be appearing in the London national portrait gallery. This tiny, exhibition in an NPG doesn’t bother with the question of whether the world needs to see more pictures of Norma Jeane Mortenson, or any of the same ones over again. But you might as well ask why we look at any photos, or hire good-looking actors to star in films, or concern ourselves with beauty at all. We love her, perhaps, because of her combination of innocence and knowingness. The smile is Judy Garland, the eyes Ava Gardner: she’s permanently, sweetly unsatisfying, the visual equivalent of the siren’s song and possibly just as dangerous. The event included street entertainers, Town Crier Tony Appleton and carol singing children from local schools. Epping town mayor Jon Whitehouse said: “The market was a resounding success. It was great to see so many people out getting ready for Christmas and discovering what Epping has to offer.”

Park events team to a local charity or church.

Organised by the Repton Park events team, the invitation only event marked the turning on of the Christmas lights on the gated development, located on Manor Road, close to the Chigwell and Woodford border. And in return for their exclusive invitations, guests were asked to bring a wrapped gift, which the events team donated on Repton Park’s behalf, to children less fortunate than their own.

“This is the second time that the team has staged an event aimed at reinforcing the real sense of community on Repton Park, while the toy drive ensured that it would also benefit two really worthwhile causes,” said Hayley Hunt, one of the organisers and director of Hunt Property Services. “Our summer spectacular raised more than £20,000 for Haven House Children’s Hospice, but this time the emphasis was on collecting toys, rather than cash,” she added. “Unlike the summer function, this time it was Repton Park families only for a fun, but intimate event.”

Presents were shared with the Incognito gospel choir, who performed at the event and who are raising money for nine year-old Nathan Francis, who has spent most of his life attending Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and who needs treatment currently only available in the United States. The remainder of the gifts were donated by the Repton

Father Christmas led a parade that included Miss Clause, Santa’s little helper elves and a white pony and sleigh. Children were given lichen with which to feed the reindeer and a special crafts table was provided, as well as a dedicated Christmas letter box, allowing them to post their wish lists in good time for Christmas. Sir Richard Branson 62 years in the making “A generation ago, the image was that you had to trample everyone else down to succeed - but I don’t believe that makes good business sense. If you’re the kind of person that jumps down the throat of people, you’re not going to be successful.”- Richard Branson Words by

A

warded an O.B.E in the 200’s for his services to entrepreneurship; Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson, Owner of The Virgin Group has more than 2000 entertainment, media and travel companies around the world. Born and raised in Blackheath, London this successful businessman has recently celebrated his 62nd birthday in style. Sir Richard Branson has worked hard to become the successful man he is today, with Dyslexia and a poor academic performance in school, Mr Branson was not always destined for greatness. However, discovering his impressive ability to connect with others soon enabled his endeavour into the business world.

16  SCENE

His entrepreneurial projects started in the music industry from selling records from phone booths to creating singles with his first artist in 1973 on the Virgin Records label. Mike Oldfield recorded a single “Tubular Bells”; the song was an instant hit, smashing and sticking to the UK charts for 247 weeks. The dreamer that he is Branson continued to expand his business into other major sectors, Branson started Virgin Atlantic airways after a flight he was scheduled for was cancelled. He had a jet already secured, and invited the passengers of the cancelled flight to fly for free with him. Jokingly posting a Hand- written sign above the plane entrance, reading “Virgin Atlantic

Airways - Flight 1.” with that his airline business was born. Ironically several of the passengers of that flight soon became investors of Branson’s airline, making him the billionaire he is today. In 1992, Virgin records was struggling to financially support itself and the company was sold that year to THORN EMI for $1 billion, Branson declared the record business to have been ‘the genesis of his Virgin Empire’ and was heartbroken to go his separate ways. Soon after, Branson expanded his businesses to include a train company, a luxury game preserve, a mobile phone company, and a space tourism company; Virgin Galactic, with which he declared on his recent birthday he and his daughters would be the amongst the first to vencher into space.

In 2007, Branson announced the Virgin Earth Challenge, a competition awarding $25 million to anyone that designed a product to reduce greenhouse gases for a minimum of ten years without any harmful effects. With over 2,600 applications, 11 finalists were revealed on 2 November 2011. Along with his efforts to “go green” Mr. Branson announced the creation of Virgin Fuels, which invested $400 million in order to develop nonpetroleum fuels. Declaring with excellent promotional flair, Branson recently proposed his plan to invest $3 billion to develop energy sources, over the next decade. With this investment Branson is in fact looking for a return on his money and states that “Some will be profitable, some will not be profitable,” acknowledging previous failures in these investments. SCENE  17

As well as being a world renowned entrepreneur, Branson is also known for his eccentric sporting achievements, the most notable is the record-breaking Atlantic crossing, in the Virgin Atlantic Challenger, he holds the record as ‘the fastest to cross the Atlantic Ocean via boat’, he also was the first to cross the Atlantic and Pacific oceans by hot-air balloon in the “Virgin Atlantic Flyer”, which was the first and largest hot air balloon to cross the ocean. Sir Richard Branson already conquering these great achievements aspires to be the first to circle the globe in a balloon, although having already made several unsuccessful attempts, his motivation to succeed has never deceased. With every success under his belt possibly imaginable, Sir Richard Branson and other entrepreneurs continue to help create opportunities to School leavers who have chosen not to go to university. 18  SCENE

They hope to make them eligible for a student loan to start a business, Sir Richard states it is “a great way of kick-starting thousands of new businesses. Businesses don’t need much money to get going and a student loan is enough money to get those that can grow into multinational businesses to get going.” Several school-leavers have already utilized their student loans to create what have gone on to become, ‘large and successful businesses’. “This money isn’t going to enable them to build a factory. What it does is allow them to market their business properly.” Helping to mould and guide the next generation, we wish many more years of success to the inspirational, Sir Richard Branson. London’s Blooming As we enter 2013 The Bloomsbury Ballroom is sure to be London’s hottest venue Dominating the east side of Bloomsbury Square in Holborn, The Bloomsbury Ballroom is one of the city’s best kept secrets and possibly the most exciting event space on offer amongst a plethora of mediocre venues in Central London.

Words by Jo Fraser

Y

ou know you’ve arrived at the Bloomsbury Ballroom by the impressive and iconic neoclassical facade of Victoria House.

Victoria House was constructed in 1920 following the purchase of the land at Bloomsbury Square by the Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society from the Duke of Bedford, and on completion, became the second largest office block in the country after Whitehall. One of the features of the building was its three halls: the South Hall, the North Hall and the Minor Hall. Of these the South Hall, today called the Ballroom, was the only one to survive the blitz during the Second World War. In 2003 the Bloomsbury Ballroom underwent extensive remodelling to restore it to its former Art Deco grandeur. Terry Pullen, a businessman and entrepreneur with over 20 years experience in the hospitality industry, took 20  SCENE

over at the helm late last year. Formerly owner of 10 Rooms, 10 Tokyo Joes and New Connaught Rooms, Pullen now owns and runs the Kent based Bickley Restaurant and Bar, 7 Hotel and Diner as well as Little Dudley House in leafy Surrey. He says of his recent purchase of The Bloomsbury Ballroom “As soon as I saw the venue I knew it was the perfect space to host any number of events whether a wedding, birthday celebration, intimate cocktail party or corporate entertaining. Central London has lost its appeal somewhat with a lack of exciting and unique venues. The Bloomsbury Ballroom provides the ideal setting to showcase any occasion in stunning surroundings.” Entered through grand revolving doors and descending to the floor below, guests are transported to the glitz

As well as private functions, The Bloomsbury Ballroom will play host to regular “nights”. From February, a monthly themed ball will be held at the venue and there will be a weekly show-driven offer featuring dinner, dance and credible, upmarket entertainment providing a night of style, sophistication and fun in the heart of Central London. Since Terry Pullen’s takeover of the venue in September, the venue has already put on a number of high-profile events including the launch party of the much-anticipated Call of Duty Ops 2 computer game, The National Wedding Awards and Christmas parties for the likes of Topshop and Hermès. 2013 and beyond looks to be even busier with a number of events already planned. It’s easy to see why this is such a desirable location. “The Bloomsbury Ballroom is a one-stop night out for the finest quality food, drink and entertainment in exquisite surroundings. With a nod to a bygone era and brimming with all manner of event opportunities, guests can revel in our luxurious historical venue for a truly memorable experience.”

and glamour of the 1920s. The art deco inspired interior oozes taste and sophistication. The booth-style seats in the Long Bar pair deep blue leather with dark wood, striking against the white butcher’s tiles; The Crush Bar offers up swirling patterns on the thick carpet underfoot and modernist tables and chairs. The ballroom itself is an imposing space, visually spectacular with original features, high-ceilings, huge windows, sprung wooden flooring and opulent stage area. The venue is a versatile and flexible space and has a capacity of up to 880 standing and 330 seated and parking space beneath for 450 vehicles. It can be exclusively hired in its entirety or for an array of events from smaller parties to large gala dinners and conferences and comes fully equipped with state of the art lighting and sound system designed to be in keeping with its impressive surroundings. There is also the added opportunity to use the Square and exterior for photo opportunities, offering a backdrop with the wow factor. Terry Pullen and his team offer a bespoke event management service, providing the ultimate in tailormade packages for an unforgettable experience. Pullen says of the offering “The choice really is yours. You can effectively acquire and stage your own production using our space, or we can plan, organise and manage a truly custom-made event for you. This is the beauty of our independent venue – we can create and showcase pretty much whatever our guests desire”.

2. Eat the 18/21 way: 21 meals in a week, and 18 of them are super healthy. 3 meals can be ‘cheat’ meals. Stick to this! By allowing yourself 3 ‘cheat’ meals every week there is no need to deprive yourself of something that you really fancy. Just don’t go overboard! 3. Set aside some time for you everyday. Do some yoga or meditation. Best done first thing in the morning, meditation is a brilliant way of setting your intention for the day ahead and checking in with yourself before life gets going. If you only have 5 minutes no problem, this is better than doing nothing!

Top 5 Ways to De-Stress in January 1. Start the day with a cup of hot water, lemon and ginger. Lemon purifies the blood, lowers high blood pressure, nourishes brain and nerve cells and relieves symptoms of asthma and allergies. Ginger has anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties, and prevents and treats the common cold. Ginger also aids digestion so is ideal on an empty stomach ½ an hour before food.

4. Do things that make you happy....ask yourself right now, ‘What makes me happy?’. Perhaps start with your health: do you wake up and bounce out of bed thinking how you can’t wait to get started? Or is it a struggle to get motivated and moving in the mornings? Do you make the right choices throughout the day, because life is a choice, and we need to make sure we are taking full responsibility for our lives. Be positive! 5. Drink plenty of water. The human body is made up of around 2 thirds water, and the brain a massive 90%! Which all means we feel amazing if we replenish it regularly. Do you want: more energy; a flat stomach; no headaches; younger looking skin; to be more focused; to lose weight and reduce the risk of cancer? Of course you do, so aim to drink 4 pints of water a day. Next month: A close look at how yoga and meditation can help you feel in control of all corners of your life, and featuring a short meditation that anyone can do…. Is there something that you would like to ask Jo? You can email Jo with specific questions, and some of these will be featured in the magazine: jo@innerguidance.co.uk Jo De Rosa is a yoga and meditation teacher, life and detox coach, and author.

The Dukan Diet

Dr. dukan’s guide to a healthier you With its ‘eat as much as you like’ promise and extensive online community, it is no wonder that the Dukan diet is France’s most popular and renowned diet, and is quickly becoming that of the UK’s too. Currently celebrating its second birthday in the UK, DukanDiet.co.uk is the interactive home of all things Dukan and, with over one million Dukan Diet books sold nationally, Dukan is a force to be reckoned with.

T

hrust into the world of nutrition when he was working as a GP in Paris, Dr Pierre was asked to solve a patient’s weight-loss after years of failure “‘Please doc, give me a diet, you can scrap anything you want but not the meat!’ So I said ‘eat meat, lean meat, as much as you want, drink water and return to me!’” Suffice to say the patient’s weightloss was phenomenal and so, 42 years of research later, the Dukan diet was born. The diet plan comprises of four phases: Attack; Cruise; Consolidation and Permanent Stabilization. The Attack phase consists of pure protein for a limited amount of time and works as a full-on kick-

24  SCENE

start into the diet, whilst the Cruise stage throws 32 varieties of veg into the mix and the Consolidation prevents the rebound effect suffered in so many diets by gradually reintroducing formerly ‘forbidden’ foods and easing you back into a rounded eating regime. Permanent Stabilization is the final phase and it’s for life, consisting of 3 non-negotiable rules: 1. Consume three tablespoons of oat-bran a day, 2. Take the stairs whenever possible and 3. Have one pure-protein day a week (i.e. the Attack phase). Full details of the diet can be found at dukandiet.co.uk. “The diet is really very, very simple. It is based upon certain protein-rich foods, and of these foods you can

eat as much as you want; that is a very, very important aspect of the diet, because in the mind of people who are obese they are not to calculate or to count, so my diet gives them freedom, they can make choices. And it’s all natural; meat, fish, seafood – they are natural foods and they form the structure of the diet, the plan.” All sounding pretty delectable so far, right? However, like most diets which receive an unprecedented amount of praise, it is not without its controversy. The high protein element of the diet has caused minor furore in the health world because of its link to heart and kidney problems, though Dukan is adamant to set the record straight: “I say that my diet is the healthiest in the world because too much sugar, fat and carbs cause heart attack but protein goes nowhere. We lived 190,000 years without carbs and without sugar so our body is not meant to have too much fat or carbs, so my diet is natural. There is no risk involved! The only risk, the biggest risk, is to be obese” – and with predictions that over half the UK population will be obese by 2030, Dr. Dukan is discussing a very real risk. Despite controversies over its content, the diet was an overnight sensation in France before titillating the tastebuds of hopeful weight-loss inhabitants of Spain and Italy, though Dr Pierre was uncertain as to how it would take off in the UK, “I was afraid with English and the Americans because we have different ways of eating but I’ve noticed that the English are very disciplined – better than I imagined, so I am very glad because that opened a new way of communicating with people living in the commonwealth. ” Communication; another essential in the make-up of the Dukan diet. Both a google-search and Dr. Dukan himself will symphoniously agree that the success of the diet lies just as much within its chuffed legion of followers as much as within the science behind it: “In France we have something like nearly 600 blogs, websites, forums, and they are full of the community exchanging recipes! And on our official website we have about 67 million page-views a year because people spend so much time speaking of their life, of their recipes, of their children, of their husbands and their vacations and they all help eachother!” With 19 books to his name, selling over 10 million copies, and ‘Dukan Diet’ being stocked and sold in over 50 countries (“I am very proud of that! And now I am a globetrotter!”), Dr Pierre Dukan is now the most widely read nutritionist in the world. And to whom does he attribute his success? “[my first patient] he was man who changed my life. If I’d never met him then maybe I’d be a neurologist and I would never have written book. Sometimes thing happen in your life and they change your life. He changed my life and now I try and change the lives of people!” For more information on the Dukan Diet or to create your free personal weight-loss plan please visit www.dukandiet.co.uk SCENE  25

New Year New You

Ten Steps to a Healthy New Year

The First Step - A Year in Review

The Second Step - Setting Goals

The first step is to take a look at what your diet and health have been like for the last 12 months. Think about questions like these and write down your answers in a notebook so that you can look back them again a year from now:

The second step is to set goals. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to be able to run up and down your stairway without becoming winded? Do you want to reduce cholesterol or lower your blood pressure? Decide what you really want to achieve for your health and diet over the next month and over the next year.

• How does your weight compare with a year ago? There are a few common times when people gain weight. • Do you feel healthy and have a lot of energy or are you tired all the time? • Do you take vitamins or other nutritional supplements? • Do you eat at home most of the time? If so, what types of foods? Whole fresh foods, boxed foods or TV dinners? • If you eat in a restaurant, what types of restaurants do you go to and what types of foods do you choose? • How physically active are you? Do you exercise regularly? • Do you eat healthy size portions, or do you stuff yourself with every meal? • Do you smoke? • How much alcohol do you drink each week? It is important to take an honest look at your health and dietary habits in order to set goals for your health and diet. 26  SCENE

One good goal for your first month could be to resolve to take your lunch to work four days per week for each week this month instead of eating lunch in restaurants every day. Another example of a monthly goal would be to resolve to walk for 30 minutes four days per week each week this month. Write down your goals in a notebook or in the food diary you are going to create in step seven. The Third Step - Determining Your Dietary Needs There are so many diets ranging from low-carb to low-fat to low-calorie (check out these diet books). Here just some ideas you might want to consider for your dietary needs: • Do you have high blood pressure? If so you may wish to reduce sodium in your diet by avoiding canned and

packaged foods. • Are you overweight? You need to decrease your calorie intake or increase your amount of physical exercise. You can choose low carb diets or low fat diets, just be sure to watch your calories and portion sizes. • Do you have diabetes? If so, then you need to reduce your sugar intake. • Do you have high cholesterol? Increase your intake of soluble fiber like the fiber found in oatmeal. Fiber will lower your cholesterol levels. You should reduce your intake of saturated fats and increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids from fish, flax, walnuts and canola oil. If you have specific health concerns, you should make an appointment to see your doctor, dietitian, or a nutritionist to help you know how different foods can affect how you feel.

• How many calories do you need to eat each day to reach your weight gain or weight loss goal? • How do your eating patterns fit your lifestyle? • Do you feel better with three large meals per day or five smaller meals per day? • Will you continue to eat in restaurants often? • What types of fruits and vegetables do you like? A healthy diet should give you five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables per day, 25 grams of fiber per day, five or six ounces of protein per day and a small amount of omega-3 essential fatty acids each day. To stick with your new diet, you will want to include foods you enjoy. If you love hamburgers, that’s OK. Make them at home with whole grain rolls and cut down the size of the hamburger patty, or use ground turkey. Add lots of lettuce, onion, and tomato. Add a salad instead of fries. Here are more tips and ideas:

The Fourth Step - Dietary Supplements A healthy diet should give you all of the vitamins and minerals you need, but many people take vitamins just to make sure. There are several formulations available, but all you need is a simple multivitamin and multimineral supplement. The Fifth Step - Design Your Healthy New Diet

• Choose crunchy raw green beans instead of chips and serve them with a little of your favorite dip. • Replace high fat hot dog franks with soy dogs. • Choose whole grain breads and pasta instead of white bread and white pasta. • Skip the sugary desserts and have a small dish of fresh berries with a dab of whipped cream or non-fat whipped topping...add a sprinkling of walnuts on top. • Use lemon juice instead of salad dressing. • Choose low fat ground turkey instead of high fat ground beef.

To design your new diet, here is what you need to know: SCENE  27

The Sixth Step - Shopping and Cooking When you shop, make a list and stay away from the snack food aisles and the prepackaged foods aisles as much as possible. Choose fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads, lean meats, fish and legumes. Avoid foods high in saturated fats, sodium, trans-fats and sugar. Cooking methods are important for healthy nutrition. Sautéing is better than deep-frying your foods. Frying foods adds fats and calories and doesn’t add any nutrition. Steam your vegetables instead of boiling them to mush. Steaming will preserve more of the vitamins found in the vegetables. When you cook your healthy meals at home, be sure to make a little bit extra to save as leftovers to take to work or school as a healthy lunch the next day. The Seventh Step - Getting Started with a Food Diary If you are really serious about changing your diet, losing (or gaining) weight and improving your health, you will find that keeping a food diary is key to your success. You can keep track of the foods you eat every day in a food diary. Keeping a food diary can help you getting back on your diet if necessary. Be sure to note the portion sizes and write down the calories you eat every day. Add up the number of calories you eat each day and your total for the week. If you need to lose weight, decrease the number of calories you need to eat each week by 500. By eating 500 fewer calories each day, most people will lose about one pound per week. You can make your own food diary or join Calorie Count to keep track of your healthy new diet online.

The Eighth Step - Exercise, Fitness and General Health Goals Good nutrition is just one part of a healthy lifestyle. Another component of health and fitness is exercise. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, you need to get out and get moving. Walking, running, aerobic exercise and weight lifting are all great exercises. If you want to lose weight, it is important to increase aerobic activity like walking or running. If you need to increase your strength, then you need to start resistance training such as lifting weights. There are health clubs, gyms, personal trainers as well as at-home equipment to get you fit and healthy. You also need to know how much food you should eat before you exercise. Do you smoke? If so, you will really do yourself a favor by quitting. Smoking has been connected to so many chronic diseases...plus you will save a lot of money over the next year if you quit smoking. How much alcohol do you drink? One drink per day has been shown to be beneficial and there are antioxidantsin red wine. More than one drink per day can be detrimental to your health, however. If you find yourself drinking more than four ounces of wine or twelve ounces of beer each day, then you may need to decrease your consumption of alcohol. The Ninth Step - Reduce Stress Stress is detrimental to your health. Stress includes daily events like constant deadlines at work, long drive-times with excess traffic, more activities than time to do them, as well as emotional trauma like death or divorce. The Tenth Step - Motivation and Maintenance Sometimes getting started with a new healthy diet and fitness plan is the easy part. Many of us hit occasional road-blocks due to busy schedules, loss of motivation and sometimes we hit weight loss plateaus. Those weight loss plateaus are the times when we feel like we do everything right, but the scale doesn’t seem to budge. When this happens, don’t give up.

Don’t Move Improve Getting itchy feet but can’t quite bring yourself to move home? Improving what you’ve already got could be the answer. Whether it’s lack of money, your job or a great location that is keeping you where you are, it doesn’t mean that you can’t alter your surroundings. Check out our five tips below to improve your living space and help get you just a little of that ‘new home’ feeling.

B

uilding an extension is one step that you should take with great caution. However, if done properly, an extension can not only add some extra living space for you and your family, it can also add a lot of value to your home for when the time does come to move on. The important thing to remember when building an extension is to think about the desired purpose of the room, where the new space would best sit, your budget, and any potential added value an extension could create. If you are thinking of building an extension, but you are worried about applying for planning permission (which can cost around £300) and not getting approval, then just do some research. All you have to do is take a look at other properties in your area and especially on your street. This will give you a perfect idea of what sorts of building projects actually do get approval and then you can have a decent idea of whether or not you will be granted planning permission. It will also help you avoid choosing an extension that may in fact detract from the value of your home. If building an extension is out of your price range, then you can improve your home with some interior decorating. Start with the rooms you spend the most time in – the living room and bedrooms perhaps – and create spaces that you enjoy spending time in. This could mean creating a feature wall with some cool wallpaper, investing in some new (or vintage) furniture, or even something simpler like buying a new bedspread or curtains. It’s amazing what a few small touches here and there can do to the overall feel of your home.

Curb appeal is something mostly associated with people who are trying to sell their home. To put it simply, curb appeal is the first impression your home gives to people driving past or turn up for a viewing. Having said that, you walk or drive up to your home almost every day. Why should the curb appeal only be considered in terms of those you are trying to sell your home to? Give the outside of your home a lick of paint, tackle the weeds, tidy the driveway or add some nice outside lighting. You’ll be proud to walk up to your front door in no time! If you’re thinking your kitchen needs a bit of a revamp, then that’s great. Installing a new kitchen is a great way to improve your home but they don’t come cheap. Thinking about the enduring appeal of a new kitchen is of vital performance. Bright cupboards and a giant breakfast bar might seem attractive now, but will you still feel the same in 5 years time? Will potential buyers feel the same? Neutrality is key for the items that aren’t easily and cheaply replaced. If you’re really feeling the need to add a bit of colour to your culinary life, go for bright appliances, pictures and soft furnishings. Beautiful.

So we’ve covered the inside and outside of your home, but what about the garden? What you need to do to improve your garden will depend on the shape, size and landscape of your garden, as well as what you want to get from your garden. If your space is limited, you could consider paving with a few flower beds around the edge to add colour without adding too much maintenance. If you have a large open green space, you could consider planting some trees (although this needs careful planning in terms of location and type of suitable tree) or adding a water feature. So there you have it, our top five tips for improving your home. Obviously what’s best for you will depend completely on the property you are starting with, what you’re hoping to achieve and how big a budget you have to work with. But hopefully our ideas will give you something to start thinking about anyway. SCENE  41

Following on from the SLK 55 AMG Black Series from 2006, the CLK 63 AMG Black Series (2007), the SL 65 AMG Black Series (2008) and the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series (2011), the fifth exponent sees the Black Series entering a new dimension with the gull-wing model. The uprated AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine generating a power output of 464 kW (631 hp) and 635 Newton metres of torque is a byword for thrilling driving dynamics, making the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series the most powerful AMG high-performance automobile with a combustion engine at present. AMG Coupé Electric Drive with a maximum output of 552 kW comes with greater power reserves. The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. The top speed stands at 315 km/h. A striking feature on the sides is the attractive integration of the side skirts, which combine with the side feature line in appealing fashion. The carbon elements fitted along the bottom at the sides continue the line of the carbon-fibre front splitter along to the rear. AMG forged wheels in a series-specific 10 spoke design, painted in matt black with a high sheen finish, provide glimpses of the AMG ceramic high-

performance composite brake system. AMG forged wheels in matt black with high-sheen rim flange are alternatively available. A functional, sporty racing-car atmosphere is prevalent inside the SLS AMG CoupéBlack Series, with highquality materials demonstrating precision workmanship and exquisitely designed details. There is a choice of two colour variants: Alcantara® black or Alcantara® black/red. With the two-tone variant, the door centre panels and the applications on the centre console and above the glove compartment are finished in red. The AMG Performance steering wheel with flattened bottom rim section features Alcantara® all round for a good grip. In the top section the steering wheel features a sporty red 12 o’clock marking. The real metal bezel features a high-gloss black paint finish to match the high-gloss black surrounds of the air vents. A particularly high-quality and exclusive Black Series detail is the so-called “3D seam” which runs horizontally along the dashboard: a fine Alcantara® strip in anthracite features across the entire width of the leather covering. Red contrasting stitching in the leather lend an accomplished finish to the 3D seam, underscoring the hand-crafted character. A highlight among the optional equipment and appointments is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system, developed by Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG together with renowned Danish audio specialist Bang & Olufsen. The Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG highend surround sound system with Dolby Digital 5.1 enables an exclusive music experience of the very highest standard. This is made possible by a 1000 W amplifier and 11 loudspeakers in conjunction with precise distribution of the music signals by the sound processor according to the selectable seat positions – driver, co-driver or central. The market launch of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series will begin in June 2013. SCENE  49
