As a young woman with a diverse range of interests in arts and literature as well as science, Dr. Laura Kunberger had an equally wide selection of careers she could have chosen. Applying her talents in the medical profession was most appealing to Dr. Kunberger because of the impact she would be able to make in people’s daily lives. That is exactly what she does today as a board certified radiologist and Director of Breast Imaging for Partners Imaging and Breast Diagnostic Center. “Early detection of cancer is where my passion is,” she says. “Detecting cancer early is really important because it is more treatable and can lead to a cure.” The Partners Breast Diagnostic Center offers comprehensive breast health care including both screening and diagnostics. Dr. Kunberger has read thousands of breast screenings and diagnostic cases and performed hundreds of minimally invasive biopsies. The Center offers advanced technology for screening and diagnostic mammography, 3D Tomosynthesis mammography, breast ultrasound and breast MRI with the only locally available FDA-approved MRI dedicated to breast imaging. Dr. Kunberger also performs minimally-invasive outpatient biopsies at the Center with ultrasound-guided or MRI-guided imagery as well as stereotactic guidance. Dr. Kunberger has been practicing in Sarasota since 1999 and has served as Medical Director and Quality Assurance Director of Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s radiology department. She also helped develop the hospital’s breast health program. Dr. Kunberger earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Williams College, received her medical degree and completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Miami, and completed a fellowship in Body Imaging at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center. She also was an Assistant Professor in Radiology and Director of Medical Student Radiology Education at Louisiana State University. “We want to treat each patient uniquely and deliver the best care we can with empathy and compassion,” Dr. Kunberger says. “Often we are the first practitioner someone sees when they think they may have breast cancer. Although most turn out to be negative, we understand what they are going through when facing a scary possibility.”
