CLAIM.

1832.

M Y D E A R S I R : I have been desired by my brother-in-law, Mr. E m m e t , to ask you w h e t h e r you cannot assist him officially under the following circumstances. In 1824, the Haytian Governmant sent citizen Granville, as their agent to this country, to make arrangements for the transmission of emigrants from the United States to St. Domingo ; and, as such agent, he entered into a contract with a Mr. Weston, a merchant of this city, for that purpose, which was to continue in force for one year from 8th N o v e m b e r , 1824, and which was ratified by the Haytian Government. T w o vessels were despatched under that contract to Hayti, with a large party of emigrants, and extensive measures w e r e taken to continue t h e business for the remainder of the term, w h e n , either owing to the conduct of the first emigrants or to some other cause unknown, the contract was revoked by the Haytian Government. Mr. Weston, had been obliged to raise money to fulfil his part of the contract, and received from Mr. E m m e t and his partner, Mr. Selden, about $7,000, which he secured by giving them an interest in the contract, but of which only about $2,500 has been repaid—being nearly all that has been received from Hayti. After the revoking of the contract, Mr. Weston prepared his accounts, and exhibited a loss in actual expenditure exceeding $3,000, which h e forwarded to and addressed the Government, urging the payment of the balance, and also that some indemnity should be made him for the loss of time and services rendered, which he estimated at $10,000. Shortly after this and before any thing was done in the settlement of the matter, Mr. Weston died, and his administrator has assigned to Messrs. E m m e t & Selden his rights u n d e r the contract.
