VOLCANO CHOIR REPAVE Tiderays Acetate Comrade Byegone Alaskans Dancepack Keel Almanac

It’s been four years since the first Volcano Choir album, Unmap, provided a glimpse into the collaborative mindset between a singer and a band that inspired him. Ideas were minted, written at a distance and realized in the studio; edges sanded back and flaps tucked in, the craftsmanship of the endeavor bearing evidence of the craft itself, and the technology used to assemble it. Unmap strove to find strands of life between the ones and zeroes - a carefully constructive narrative that showed the listener through its darkest passages like a tour guide leading their wards through a cave, with nothing but a slack length of rope and the senses of sound and touch. Just as importantly, it brought these people together, setting an expectation: be your own band. Achieve transference. Learn how to play these songs in the live setting. Tour Japan. Do some dates in America. Pull the life from the record and share it with tiny segments of the world.

CATALOG #: JAG238 RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 3, 2013 FORMAT: CD/GATEFOLD LP/DIGITAL CD BOX LOT: 30 LP BOX LOT: 28 GENRE: AVANT POP/INDIE ROCK KEY MARKETS: MILWAUKEE, MADISON, MINNEAPOLIS, CHICAGO, INDIANAPOLIS, WASHINGTON DC, NEW YORK, AUSTIN, LOS ANGELES, PORTLAND, SEATTLE

Repave brings Volcano Choir into sharp focus. The glitch-laden, cautious presentation of the band’s previous work serves as points of both reference and departure across these eight songs, the product of growing conviction and trust, of a fully-operational rock band, gifted in shading and nuance, and rumbling with power. It’s the sound of the creative process as it evolves and ultimately explodes, the seamless interleaving of electronic and acoustic/amplified instruments, multithreaded with the timbre and technology of the human voice as it enters and exits the equation. Moreover, Repave is the sound of confident musicians extending their reach to anthemic peaks and pulling back to reveal moments of real vulnerability, sure enough of themselves to let them stand on their own.

If Repave reminds you of other kinds of records from the past decade or so, it’s done so on the bonds between the members of Volcano Choir, how their friendships were fortified over the years-long process of writing and recording these songs. There is an openness to this work that won’t be taken for granted – real, moving tales of change, sadness, loss and truth grace the wordplay of these tracks, an account of life between the fringes of poetry and reality. With each verse you can sense that someone, somewhere is listening to this music and getting stronger, feeling better, learning to open up their soul. Volcano Choir is Jon Mueller, Chris Rosenau, Matthew Skemp, Daniel Spack, Justin Vernon and Thomas Wincek.

CALIFONE STITCHES Movie Music Kills A Kiss Stitches Frosted Tips Magdalene Bells Break Arms moonbath.brainsalt.a.holy.fool Moses A Thin Skin of Bullfight Dust We are a Payphone turtle eggs/an optimist CATALOG #: DOC080 RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 3, 2013 FORMAT: CD/LP/DIGITAL CD BOX LOT: 30 LP BOX LOT: 25 GENRE: ALTERNATIVE/FOLK KEY MARKETS: CHICAGO, NEW YORK, SAN FRANCISCO, BOSTON, WASHINGTON DC, SEATTLE, PORTLAND, AUSTIN, PHOENIX, LOS ANGELES VINYL NOT RETURNABLE

Stitches, the new album from Califone, touches on all permutable definitions of the word, its episodes of discomfort and healing rendered with exquisite beauty and craftsmanship. Archetypes and mythological figures rub shoulders with bruised civilians throughout this odyssey. Intimate timbres—garage sale drum machines, slack guitar strings, hushed vocals—offset the album's cinematic inclinations. The listener moves through a landscape of Old Testament blood and guts, spaghetti Western deserts and Southwestern horizons, zeroing in on emotions and images that cannot be glanced over. Motes of dust dance briefly in afternoon sunlight. "This is the first record I've made in my life where none of the work was done in Chicago," says Califone's Tim Rutili. The writing and recording began in Southern California, then continued in Arizona and Texas. "Those dry landscapes and beaches and hills and shopping malls all made it into the music," he acknowledges. Additional sounds were recorded in Rutili's car while driving and in his backyard in the rain. Brass, pedal steel, and strings color in the edges and outlines songs like "Frosted Tips," "We Are A Payphone," "moonbath.brainsalt.a.holy.fool" and "Moses," yet Stitches is no Ennio Morriconemeets-Cecil B. DeMille pastiche. Gritty electronics, the mesmerizing thrumming of tablas, and eerie keyboards also pepper these ten new selections. A cartographer could spend lifetimes mapping the terrain of Stitches. Eventually Rutili commenced recording with Griffin Rodriguez in Los Angeles, Michael Krassner in Phoenix, and Craig Ross in Austin, along with a raft of guest musicians. "We treated each song as its own particular planet. Bringing in different people and recording in different places helped bring some tension to the whole thing. I wanted this to be a more schizophrenic record, stitching together conflicting textures and feels." Rutili's old Red Red Meat colleague Tim Hurley stayed with him for a few months and they recorded together for the first time since Califone's eponymous 1998 debut EP. In some regards, Stitches harks back to those earliest days of Califone. There was more home recording, and musicians came and went as the songs dictated. Yet the ultimate outcome sounds like the work of an artist reborn. Rutili says. "Instead of writing from my balls and brain, this time I wrote from the nerves, skin, and heart."

HOLOGRAMS FOREVER - LP/CD A year plus on after the release of their debut LP, Sweden’s Holograms have returned with their second full length, Forever. After a year and a half of touring, losing their jobs, parts of their sanity and returning home only with the hope that their hard work will eventually pay off, they embarked on a new record drawing from the experiences that had simultaneously excited and exhausted the members.

Frontmen Andreas Lagerström (vocals/bass) and Anton Strandberg (drums) still live in working class Farsta, 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of urbane and metropolitan Stockholm while the brothers’ Spetze (Anton: vocals/guitar, Filip: synth) still live at home. This isolation and boredom after their first international tours led the group to further mature and grow their sound into a record far more cohesive and “big-sounding” than their debut. The band aimed to capture the feeling of music being played in a church or temple, “like a mass… procession, or eulogy” as clearly demonstrated on closing track “Lay Us Down.” Though matured and experienced, the band’s youthful energy and DiY/Punk upbringing is still upfront and in full effect with the caustic “A Sacred State,” the melodic attack of “Rush,” or the unbridled mass-of-energycut-loose of “A Blaze on the Hillside.” Clearly, Holograms show no signs of slowing down the excitement and aggression of their original sound, something to delight their growing audience in this current world of arrogant sonic about-faces on sophomore albums. Forever is more than the next set of songs from Holograms. It’s a fully realized album that fans will relish for years to come. Songwriting and anthemic choruses as classic as the William Bouguereau painting they chose as the basis of their cover, though presented in a new and exciting way. A way perhaps best described with Holograms’ own words for the essence of their music “...energy, honesty, heart and spirit.”

Numero group Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label

In 1969, after three years as Soul Sister #1 to James Brown’s touring entourage, Marva Whitney came home to Kansas City, putting Ellis Taylor’s Forte label back at full fighting strength. She’d calmed aching crowds the day after MLK’s death, and she’d lived the life, despite its rigors—to pour out her pain and exuberance on Forte sides including “I’ve Lived The Life” and “Daddy Don’t Know About Sugar Bear,” which made national rounds in 1972. By then, Forte had already done more than deliver Marvelous Marva to market. Taylor worked overtime at KPRS to bring the world The Rayons, who’d stroll their girl group harmonies past Chicago’s RCA studios on “Baby Be Good.” In ’68, The Four Darlings sauntered in with smoky-voiced soul operatics on the demanding “Give Me Love.” Progressing in the middle ’70s, Everyday People got “Super Black” on Forte’s pine-green label. Still powering forward some 13 years on, Forte redawned with the 1980s, essaying disco funk with Sharon Revoal’s “Reaching for Our Star.” Numero 047 Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label charts Kansas City yeoman’s work, the Carpets and the Derbys, dapper clothiers mysteriously murdered, and marriages made and broken. In 28 LP tracks or 21 on CD, plus a trove of promo headshots and every-hued label scans detailing all iterations of Forte’s logo in print, this 16th Eccentric Soul sojourn hands over vivid floor shakers and lost dance craze records alike—though what moves “The Hen” required remains anyone’s guess.

GROOMS INFINITY CALLER What do you do when irrational guilt and fear start to steer the ship? When you're a kid living in the Dallas suburbs it's relatively predictable; you start to see a shrink, take some prescribed meds, and as soon as you have access, numb the voices with drugs and alcohol. Not a particularly novel or interesting trajectory, but what if those voices just keep getting louder, consuming every waking moment, leaving you effectively paralyzed or twitching with paranoia? After a while, succumbing to these voices might seem self-indulgent, a cry for attention, or just boilerplate teenage histrionics. What do you do when you're 30; a grown-ass-man still tethered to the beast that dictated your life throughout your formative years? You could do a lot of things, but if you're Travis Johnson of the band Grooms, you stop drinking, soberly stare the demons in the face, and start writing songs. Johnson's OCD (a religion-centric form of OCD called Scrupulosity) has guided all of his adult life's pursuits, from inspiring his initial interest in music to his current day job making guitar pedals at Brookyn's Death By Audio. After releasing two albums on the prestigious indie label Kanine Records, the band still hadn't gained enough traction to support themselves with their music and they were understandably ready to call it quits. However, in 2011, impressed with their albums and live shows, author Michael Azerrad invited Grooms to perform at his Our Band Could Be Your Life show alongside St. Vincent, Ted Leo, Wye Oak, Dan Deacon, and WV alumni Dirty Projectors. It was a huge opportunity for the band, and the catalyst for what would become their new album Infinity Caller. Azerrad's enthusiasm and encouragement gave Johnson the confidence to soldier on, keep making music, and ultimately find peace of mind.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION + Solid Gold PR (Dirty Beaches, Best Coast, Clinic, Diamond Rings) is handling press. + The band was inspired to write the new album after playing Michael Azerrad's Our Band Could Be Your Life show in 2011. + Grooms have released 2 critically acclaimed records on Kanine Records. + Grooms will tour throughout 2013/2014 in support of Infinity Caller.

ESMERINE

Dalmak

CD / 180gLP / DL

STREET DATE: 03 SEPTEMBER 2013 • FOURTH ALBUM FROM MODERN CONTEMPORARY / INSTRUMENTAL ROCK ENSEMBLE LED BY PERCUSSIONIST BRUCE CAWDRON (GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR) & CELLIST REBECCA FOON (SILVER MT ZION, SALTLAND, SET FIRE TO FLAMES) • PARTLY RECORDED IN ISTANBUL WITH FOUR TURKISH GUEST PLAYERS • MIXED BY JACE LASEK (THE BESNARD LAKES, WOLF PARADE, SUUNS) When Esmerine surfaced with La Lechuza in 2011, the album signaled many things: the band's first new recordings in six years, an expanded line-up, and a song cycle inspired by and dedicated to the life and untimely death of a dear friend and fellow musician. What wasn't immediately clear was whether this acclaimed record would mark the opening of a new chapter for the band, or stand alone as a singular work of eulogy and homage driven by emotion and circumstance. Esmerine's new album Dalmak emphatically confirms that the group has indeed continued writing, exploring and collaborating – definitively extending its horizons in this new iteration of the band's trajectory. Bruce Cawdron (marimba) resigned from his seat as drummer for Godspeed You! Black Emperor in 2012, allowing him to focus more fully on Esmerine alongside co-founder and cellist Rebecca Foon (Silver Mt. Zion, Set Fire To Flames); the two principals also recruited percussionist Jamie Thompson (Unicorns, Islands) and multiinstrumentalist Brian Sanderson as full-time members to solidify the group as a writing and performing quartet. European tours in 2011-2012 brought Esmerine to Istanbul, where the group's enthusiastic reception led to an invitation for an artist residency in the city. Dalmak is the fruit of that visit: the majority of the album was recorded in Istanbul, where compositions by the band's four Canadian musicians were augmented by a number of Turkish guest players. "Dalmak" is a Turkish verb with many connotations: to be absorbed in, to dive into, to bathe in, to contemplate, to plummet. As a title for Esmerine's new album, “dalmak" refers in a literal sense to immersion in the culture and music of Istanbul but also appropriately evokes the range of music that emerged from this immersion: a collection of songs that shift between meditative pulsing and enveloping restraint to headlong flights into rhythm and groove. With Dalmak, Esmerine presents some of its most richly minimal and intimate music alongside what is surely its most explosive, energized and ornate. The album is a tour-de-force of cross-cultural music-making, emotive but unsentimental, deeply textured and detailed but never precious or pedantic, superbly guided throughout by a balance of DIY rock, new folk and modern classical/contemporary sensibilities. With initial recording by Barkin Engin and Metin Bozkurt in Istanbul, Esmerine laid down the live bed tracks for the up-tempo rhythmic songs at the album's core: "Lost River Blues", "Barn Board Fire" and "Translator's Clos". Marimba, cello, drums, tenor banjo, bass and trumpet are joined by bendir, darbuka, erbane, meh, barama, saz and electric guitar from local players for these centerpiece tracks, where extended melodic themes and short solos are passed around and woven through staccato grooves and polyrhythmic vamps in deeply satisfying fashion. The sessions continued back in Montréal at Breakglass, where Cawdron and Foon tracked the more studied cello and marimba songs "Learning To Crawl" and "White Pine", and where the album's gorgeously saturated warmth, depth and propulsive grit was achieved courtesy of Breakglass head engineer Jace Lasek (The Besnard Lakes, Wolf Parade, Suuns) and Ian Ilavsky, who mixed the album alongside Rebecca and Bruce. We're thrilled to present this new album from Esmerine and to document the continued evolution of Bruce Cawdron and Rebecca Foon, two musicians with whom Constellation has enjoyed a decade-long relationship spanning multiple projects. Dalmak is a distinct and exciting highlight in their diverse and adventurous discographies.

Warrior horse-woman of myth or chimerical beast of late 1970s funk? It is simply Centaura, available here for what amounts to the first time. For Atlanta hillbilly impresario Bob Riley, the “Spiral Series” of 12”s was part put-on, part hustle—but for Birmingham, Alabama’s Centaura, that spiral-in logo appeared as a long-shot leg up. Their record’s two-color, one-idea cover was mass-produced for Riley’s envisioned run of potential releases…though nothing but the enigmatic Centaura ever filled the jacket—and just barely. Recorded in 1978, Lawdy, Lawdy, Lawd is a long-playing Golden Fleece of funk, disco, boogie, and deep post-Muscle Shoals balladry that would’ve surely failed to exist without Riley’s extreme penny-pinching tactics in service of a failed marketing ploy so ludicrous, it kept the LP out of stores, relegated to extreme scarcity forever. On Side One, Jesse Daniel and Cedrich Rutledge trade energized beats and freaks, before the synth-washed slowdown of “One of a Kind.” Side Two features Riley’s two textbook funk cuts and album-ender “Just Don’t Love You”—a mysterious tack-on of the Carbon Copies’ Git Down Inc.-issued 45, plus a heaving “Distant Lover” that sexes Marvin Gaye’s original into softcore porn territory.

David Lynch & Angelo Badalamenti Twin Peaks - Season Two Music & More

Sacred Bones Records have recently unearthed a select number of copies of the soundtrack to David Lynch’s T.V masterpiece, Twin Peaks. Originally released on CD by Lynch over 5 years ago, but now very difficult to find, Twin Peaks – Season Two Music & More compiles the classic music that defined this series. Composed by Angelo Badalamenti with contributions from Lynch, this soundtrack is renowned for the way it so perfectly matched the chilling, sinister, though often quite funny tone of one of the greatest television shows ever. Each song is crafted to fit a certain character, scene or emotion and the listener cannot help but be transported to mysterious world of Twin Peaks. Last summer, Sacred Bones released a deluxe limited edition version of the original soundtrack to David Lynch’s landmark 1977 film Eraserhead on vinyl. This reissue is no longer available, having sold out almost immediately. Now Sacred Bones is pleased to make this music available to the world once more, having unearthed copies of the soundtrack on CD. Originally released by Lynch himself, these CDs have not been available for over 5 years. This edition of the soundtrack even includes a ten-minute dance mix done by Lynch. To lay in the dark and listen to this dizzying succession of blissful noise is a different way to get “lost” in the vast space of then the visuals of the film itself. It’s no stretch to consider this soundtrack an experimental, early industrial masterpiece. Eraserhead’s individual passion and personal tone shines through even in the thickest moments of fierce static, an audio undertaking that took Lynch and sound designer Alan Splet years to perfect.

Additional Information: • Sound design by David Lynch (acclaimed director) & Alan Splet • Unearthed copies of Eraserhead Sndtk on CD, featuring 10 min bonus track • LP is now out of print & CD has been unavailable for over 5 years • Lynch’s second solo album (SBR-109) was just released & in label’s top 3 sellers of all time catalog #: SBRSPEC-001cd artist: David Lynch & Alan Splet title: Eraserhead Original Soundtrack Genre: Soundtrack, Alternative Release Date: Out Now available formats: CD UPC CD: 858334001107 territory restrictions: None Box Lot: 30 CD:

M E AT M A R K E T TOO TIRED B/W THE RETURN OF PRINCE DONATH U N N With a name like Meat Market, you’d expect this Oaklandbased band to sound like the soundtrack to Saturday night in some douchey velvet-roped nightclub. You’d expect big thumping booty-bass and lascivious lyrics. You’d expect a fan-base of popped collars and bared midriffs. While the quartet does wield the power to pack in throngs of sweaty young people looking to dance, their sound bears little resemblance to the incessant thud of your standard club-banger. Instead, these four college-aged kids bust out a blend of surf guitar twang with garage-crafted power pop--think The Ventures meets The Marked Men. The band has already amassed a solid following in California and along the route to SXSW with just a self-titled cassette/LP to their name. Meat Market now offers up two new songs via Suicide Squeeze. “Too Tired” perfectly encapsulates their sound: a marriage of propulsive Stratocaster riffs with a big catchy chorus. B-side “The Return of Prince Donathunn” is an even stronger nod to the wave-riding instrumental groups of the ‘60s, with the steady 4/4 beat and dueling guitar leads belying the bands outspoken apathy towards surfing. The two-song EP is available worldwide both digitally and as a limited edition 7"(100 on coke-bottle clear, 400 on black) with a download coupon.
