ered mower out into a grain field in 1892, they were a long way from Callicoon. And yet the invention the two men used to make history in South Dakota more than a century ago has become a symbol of the small town on the Delaware. Eighteen years ago, the modern version of Froelich and Mann’s famous invention rolled down Main Street, Callicoon, and a tradition began. The Callicoon Tractor Parade. Held the second Sunday in June every year, starting exactly at the noon whistle, the tractor parade is a piece of the present and marker of the town’s past. Callicoon Depot, as it was once known, owes its roots to the land: to
the timber milled at Martin Hermann’s mill, to the animals whose hides were tanned using the bark of local hemlocks, to the vast space perfect for German immigrants to set up farms. Even as Froelich and Mann were tinkering with a steam-powered engine and trying to make a machine that could thresh thousands of bushels of grain in a day – safely – the railroads were bringing folks to Callicoon to clear fields and set down roots. And by the time the United States Postal Service dropped “Depot” from the hamlet’s name in 1906, tractors were slowly beginning to sell to farmers outside of South Dakota, spreading toward New York, toward Callicoon. That’s the history the Delaware

Youth Center will celebrate again on June 8 at the 18th annual Callicoon Tractor Parade, a history of American agriculture and a history of Callicoon all in one long day of celebrating. The day begins with Callicoon firemen’s pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the firehouse on Route 97. The Farmers’ Market opens up at 11 a.m., running until 2 p.m. in Callicoon Creek Park on Audley Dorrer Drive. And then, of course, the parade, which kicks off at the noon whistle, winding down Main Street until the last tractor has made its way all the way from the Youth Center’s fields around town. Miller’s Chicken Barbecue follows at the Youth Center, a fundraiser for the non-profit.

You have to start your “Tractor Parade Day” off with pancakes, sausage, eggs, coffee and juice at the Callicoon Firehouse on Route 97, Callicoon. Many of the daughters of the firemen are on hand to help and the food is delicious. Serving is from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. so you can make it downtown to claim your spot along Main Street for the noon start of the parade.

A long-time supporter of the Delaware Community Center, Jesse likes to paint a picture with his voice, much to the delight of the thousands of people who attend the event each and every year. Much thanks goes out to all the volunteers for all the hard work they do each year, organizing this massive event and working so hard during Tractor Parade Sunday to make it a success. And don’t forget – the 18th Annual Callicoon Tractor Parade T-shirt (seen on the cover) will be for sale, as always. More than 300 tractors rumble down Main Street during the parade, giving Jesse’s vocal chords a real workout.
