‘Flyway by the byway’ Planting milkweed for the Monarch STORY BY AUTUMN SCHANIL

onarch butterflies were the main topic of discussion at the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway (UDSB) meeting in Narrowsburg this past Monday evening. “I have to go back a year, for the benefit of the folks who weren’t here then,” said Town of Highland Historian Debra Conway, holding a recently printed brochure/poster promoting the Monarch butterfly and “fostering the flyway by the byway” project. “It was literally an email that I sent to Glenn [Pontier] that said ‘crazy idea.’ I had just read a news story about President Obama’s roll-out of a pollinator initiative that involved mainly the Monarchs, but other pollinators as well,” explained Conway. “It addressed the fact that they are in a serious decline and the steps the federal government would be taking on, with the help of other states, local governments, and organizations, to restore habitats and bring the numbers back.” In the last 20 years the Monarch population has dwindled from more than a billion to just 150 million. That figure may still seem large but

considering their life span and the incredible journey this insect makes each year, it’s a significant number decline. Every spring, female Monarchs lead the Northeastern butterflies North from Mexico to parts of Texas where they will lay their eggs on milkweed. The first generation lives about two to six weeks as adults. They fly as far North as they can, lay their eggs, and die. The second generation continues the journey North, lays eggs and dies, followed by the third and fourth generations. In the Fall, an incredible creation of nature hatches, the “super generation.” This is the generation that flies all the way back South to the Oyamel forests in Mexico, that they themselves have never known, but instinct had passed the memory from generation to generation. These butterflies live between six to nine months. So what’s the catch to all of this? Due to illegal logging of their winter habitat and the thinning of the forest, changes to their micro-climate are killing them.

Real estate development, land management practices, chemically-aided agriculture, mowing and more have destroyed their habitat, breeding grounds and main food source: milkweed. “This brochure is just the first step in the ‘crazy idea’ of an entire marketing and branding plan that we could adopt in the byway that would establish some initiatives that would help bring back the Monarch habitat, said Conway, “either through school groups or church groups creating butterfly gardens. The brochures were made possible through the Town of Highland as well as the Upper Delaware Council’s Technical Assistance Grant, and were designed by Dorene Warner. The brochures are written for people of all ages, with facts, statistics, and things you can do to help. And the inside is meant to be a poster that kids or teachers can hang on the wall. “I hope that everyone leaves this meeting tonight and becomes an ambassador for this. Even if you don’t go out and plant a butterfly garden, at least get it to the people that are already doing these kinds of things, Conway stated. “It’s so easy to just plant milkweed plants among other gorgeous nectar-rich plants. I’d like to see gardens created around each one of our Upper Delaware Scenic Byway signs. “This could not only bring ecotourism in and possibly create businesses, but it will be helping restore an important world pollinator whose flyway goes along our scenic byway. The UDSB hopes to spread the initiative, get gardeners, schools, organizations, non-profits, even Sullivan Renaissance involved. “I lived through the era when eagles were nearly extinct along the Delaware River, and they came back, and they became a viable part of ecotourism. People come every winter when no one else comes. Everyone wants to see eagles, added Conway. “To this day I have to stop what I’m doing and watch them when I see them by my house, and I understand that people do the same thing when they see a Monarch butterfly in their yard. Monarch brochures and more information on how to get involved is available at the Upper Delaware Council office on Bridge Street in Narrowsburg.

The Monarch caterpillar, or instar, goes through five different stages of development. This caterpillar is in its fifth and final stage. Soon it will spin itself into a pupa or chysalis.

The Monarch pupa, or chrysalis, is a beautiful and articulated green. It is in this stage that the caterpillar morphs into an adult butterfly.

akovic Homes has been building exceptional homes since 2000 when John Makovic founded the company with an efficient approach to the construction process, a passion for perfection, and a drive to succeed and simplify the building process. John’s distinct attentiveness to detail usually makes him a bigger critic than any new homeowner; indeed he is very selective of the professionals on every project. Makovic Homes builds with modular to reduce construction time. Known for its expertise in turn-key products, Makovic’s ownership of other companies in the construction trade, makes them able to proficiently complete your home via their network of suppliers, employees and contractors. The home was built in 2012 with a half bath downstairs, an open and spacious combined kitchen and living area, complete with a fireplace and large glass patio doors looking out over the lake. “Small and tiny houses are kind of a movement right now,” said Principal Broker Warren Blumenthal. “It’s a perfect getaway, especially for a single person or a couple.” Stepping out of the patio doors a large deck hangs over the lake with your own personal dock making its way into the crisp, fresh water to your left. Perfect for a midday dip to cool off. From the back of the kitchen a wooden staircase leads up to the second floor bedroom bathed in sunlight with a full bathroom and its very own private deck. Whether sitting out gazing at the constellations at nighttime, enjoying a cup of coffee or tea in the morning, or daydreaming during the day listening to the water lapping against land, the private upstairs deck sets the bar for relaxation. Even better, both decks are made of 95 percent recycled Trex, a blend of recycled wood and plastic. Thoughtful details are reflected throughout the home including energy efficient A/C and heat pump, limestone radiant floors, a convection oven and cooktop, Hardieplank recycled wood clapboard and a Kemper system green roof design. “It’s right on the water, close to shops and restaurants, you can go swimming right in front of the dock,” said Blumenthal, “and the house, although it’s 625 square feet, its full of light. It’s spacious. It’s comfortable. What more do you need?” So get the canoe or kayak ready and find your zen on the lake. Set back from the road, hidden by pristine nature, tall trees and a small, private dock on the lake where you can swim, fish or take out the canoe, it’s the perfect getaway from the daily stresses of life. Renovations - not just for houses STORY AND PHOTOS BY AUTUMN SCHANIL

he Mileses Cemetery in the Town of Fremont, originally known as the Milesville Cemetery, has been getting some much needed attention this summer. Located on a grassy hill, surrounded by beautiful pines and hemlocks, nearly 150 people are buried there. One of the oldest readable headstones dates back to 1869, belonging to Anna Sophia Kessinger, who was born just one year before in 1868. Since the original church, that stood tall on a stone foundation on the hillside just below the cemetery, burned in the 1970s many of the headstones became overgrown with vegetation. Others broke, fell over, became unreadable, or disappeared altogether. “Francis Karkkainen has a lot of family buried in the cemetery,” said Town of Fremont Supervisor George Conklin III. “So he began working together with some other individuals to start renovations and restorations of the area.” Headstones have been righted and cleaned, vegetation cut back, and a sign that says “Mileses Cemetery” erected in the center of a colorful flower garden. A tiny church, that is still in the process of being built, now stands where the original church once welcomed people for Sunday mass.

T

According to Conklin, “The building will be like a little monument for the past church and the cemetery.” A stonewall and flowers surround the little church, with the bell that survived the fire from the original church set upon a large stone just to its right. The bell is engraved “Buckeye Bell Foundry 1894” followed by “Presented by John Baer, Sr.” Even more exciting, the changes to the cemetery were recognized at the Sullivan Renaissance Awards this year at Bethel Woods. The Town of Fremont received two Community Judges’ Choice Awards of $1,000 each. The first was for Mileses Cemetery Restoration for tree removal and drainage and the second was for non-profit foundation creation. “It was a really proud moment and showed that what everyone is doing is appreciated,” said Conklin, “not just to the Town of Fremont, but to visitors and the people that have family members buried there.”

How A Smart Home Can Help Your Back-to-School Routine ummer is coming to an end, which means American families are gearing up for the school year. With the change in seasons comes a change in your daily routine. Earlier mornings, hectic schedules and to-do lists create added stress and anxiety for parents. Could technology step in and become the solution for streamlining and simplifying your life? An increasing amount of U.S. families think so, as more Americans are

S

turning their houses into smart homes. In fact, the number of households with smart solutions is expected to hit 24.4 million by 2020, according to Statista. Improved security, convenience, comfort, control, accessibility and cost savings are just a few of the reasons why this technology is gaining in popularity. So how can a smart home improve your everyday life? For starters, they are surprisingly easy to use, make life more efficient and add a comforting layer of security to your family’s home. Here are five ways a smart home can make life easier this school year.

• Brings you peace of mind. One of Providing the Best Quality & Service and Prices in the Area Since 1973 for 38 Years Commercial & Residential

• Soft Window Treatments • Verticals • Drapes & Upholstery

the top reasons people purchase smart home systems is because of the security and protection they provide. While you’re at work and the kids are at school, cameras and motion detectors can give you a glimpse inside your home. At night, outdoor cameras, contact sensors and lighting can ward off intruders and prevent burglaries, keeping your family safe and secure. For an affordable and simple security solution, check out Iris available at Lowe’s.

ful. If every morning is a battle against the clock as you struggle to get your family out of the house on time, there are several smart home solutions that can help. Schedule lights and alarms to turn on at a certain time every morn-

ing so you don’t have to be the wakeup police. Or set appliances, such as your coffeemaker or flat iron, to trigger at a certain time so they will be ready to use when you are. Smart home solutions automate mundane tasks and keep you running on schedule.

• Saves you money. By installing a smart thermostat, you can not only keep your family comfortable, you can also save money. With a smart thermostat you can program your home’s climate to align with your daily schedule, raising the temperature when you’re away and bringing it back down when you get home. People who switch from a regular thermostat to a smart one reduce their energy bills by around $200 a year, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Keeps you informed. Remember when people used home intercom systems? Intercoms are making a return as part of the smart home, but now they are Wi-Fi and video-enabled. With a reimagined home intercom system

like Nucleus, you can make a video call to the kids upstairs to ensure they’re doing their homework and not watching TV. Dinner’s ready? Instead of yelling, give them a call. Family communication is improved (and less annoying) with a Wi-Fi connected home intercom.

• Gets you ready for tomorrow. With smart home devices, you can also discover what is going on outside of your home before you step out for the day. Need to check the weather forecast before packing up the backpacks and laying out clothes for tomorrow? Call out to a voice-controlled speaker, such as Amazon Echo, and have information like the weather, news or traffic instantly read aloud so you can be prepared and ready to tackle tomorrow. You can even control smart home systems with your voice through an Amazon Echo. For more information about smart home solutions, visit www.irisbylowes.com. -- NAPSI
