HONESDALE, PA – Graduation season kicked off early across the Delaware River in Honesdale, PA, as 195 students received their diplomas on Saturday, June 17. Class President Nichole Freiermuth led off the ceremony’s student speakers, delivering an address about the positive aspects of her time as one of Honesdale’s Hornets. “I certainly would not have been able to make it through high school as successfully as I did without the amazing faculty that we have here,” said Freiermuth. “They truly go above and beyond, and such a characteristic isn’t always easy to find in people.” Salutatorian Emily Ritter followed with a speech entitled “Things,” the theme of which explored the complexities we all face in our modern lives. “No matter where you are going, there are some things you will need – not your phone, fancy clothes, or even your precious Netflix, but rather feelings, mindsets and ideals,” said Ritter. Institutional awards to Honesdale students from colleges and universities totaled nearly four million dollars, while local and regional awards given to Honesdale students totaled nearly $125,000. Out of 195 students, 14 graduated Summa Cum Laude, having received a GPA of 4.0 or higher. Twelve Honesdale Hornets will be entering the armed services to serve their country and their community. “The world that these students live in is different than
the one we grew up in, but let’s be reminded it is a world that we now share with them,” said Superintendent Gregory Frigoletto. “Today’s world is one of instantaneous information and constantly evolving communications technologies.” Superintendent Frigoletto praised emerging communication technologies as the reason for today’s generation being more accepting of each other and more connected to the world around them, but also warned of its drawbacks. “I urge the graduates here today to stop and reflect,” said Frigoletto. “Over time there has become a fullblown expectation – almost an entitlement – that responses and information be instantaneous. I fear it’s possible that kids today may actually wonder ‘who needs patience?’” said Frigoletto.
