Fallsburg graduates 68 STORY AND PHOTOS BY DAN HUST
FALLSBURG — Every speaker had a quote of wisdom for Fallsburg Central School’s Class of 2015 during Sunday’s commencement, but it was High School Principal Michael Williams who picked one rarely heard in a graduation ceremony. “One man can make a difference,” he told Fallsburg’s 68 graduates-to-be, noting it might have been said today as “one person.” It was advice given by one James T. Kirk nearly 50 years ago (or is that 350 years to come?) to Spock (albeit a “Spock” from a parallel universe) in a 1967 episode of “Star Trek.” Spock’s reply: “I shall consider it.” Williams exhorted his band of “shipmates” to always consider making a difference, which in part explains why he chose a “Star Trek” theme for Sunday’s ceremony. Fallsburg’s lobby and auditorium were rife with Trek references, from a sign that read, “Beam me up! Class of 2015” to a digital slide show of students’ pictures interspersed with shots of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her gallant crew. And the quotes kept coming, though the rest were credited to true historical figures. “You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by

Dakota Moody and Olivia McCarthy share one last moment together before they head up to Fallsburg’s lobby and out into its auditorium to officially become high school graduates. evading it today,” cautioned Valedictorian Ashlyn Nardi, quoting President Abraham Lincoln. Class President Madison Levine opted for one said by
an actual Fallsburg graduate: singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw: “Part of where I’m going is knowing where I’m coming from” (from his famous song, “I Don’t Want to Be”).
Supt. Ivan Katz, however, launched the quote theme into the stratosphere, compiling a Top 10 list that began with Garry Trudeau’s thought that graduates “should never be released into the world until they have been properly sedated” at #10 and concluding at #1 with this zinger from President George W. Bush: “To those of you who are graduating this afternoon with high honors, awards and distinctions, I say, ‘Well done.’ And as I like to tell the ‘C’ students: You, too, can be president!” Of course, the speakers had some of their own thoughts to share. “Failure is what brings about life experience,” predicted Salutatorian Jordan Laguio, urging his classmates not to fear it. “... It’s these moments in life that will ultimately define our character.” Not that Sunday was
about failure. “This is the day that signifies your ultimate success here,” noted Board President Joe Collura. “... Your success is our success.” “We do not leave here empty-handed or emptyhearted,” assured Levine to a capacity crowd. Every supportive family member, classmate, teacher and administrator earned Laguio’s gratitude. “Thank you for making this journey one that was worthwhile.”
