Thanks Go Pro I would like to express my thanks to The Go Pro Guys at the last DBL Nat'l award Raffle that I won at BRP. I am planning to mount it on my Swift for some great shots at Fontana! I was planning to buy one in the future anyway but now will use this one for many years to come. Thanks guys! Stu Hanssen # 73 DB2

Thank You Corner Workers To Cal Club corner workers and responders at Buttonwillow on May 20: Thank you for your quick response and professionalism when my car caught fire during the Group 1 race on Sunday. While going from leading my class to a car spitting flames and smoke is not my idea of fun, you truly saved the day by extinguishing the fire so quickly. Thanks to your hard work. I will be back racing soon! See you at the track, Matt Merrill

Auto Club Speedway AutoX Practice Looking for an opportunity to try out AutoX, or maybe get back to your roots? Due to the great coorperation of the Club Racing leadership the Solo group will be hosting an AutoX Practice on the parking lots inside the oval of Auto Club Speedway both Saturday and Sunday, June 910, 2012. This year's inside practice will have NO WORK ASSIGNEMENT for entrants (this is an extreme rarity). Since there is NO WORK, and the run groups will be somewhat un-structured this is a great opportunity for club racers to 'Double dip' the weekend; Sign up for the AutoX and simply jump in line when you have dead time. Or, sign up that loving 'pit crew' member in their daily driver who gets bored watching you 'go around in circles'. If you have family and friends who're always on the fence, this will be the year's best bang for buck, and did I mention, NO WORK. Much of the proceeds coming from this weekends AutoX will be going to the charitable group AbilityFirst of Long Beach. Expect about a 30 second course and 16+ runs per day. Registration is through MyAutoEvents (you'll need an account) and paid via paypal (you don't need a paypal account). Registration for the "Inside" practice is OPEN. Register as early as possible to help with logistics, practice is limited to only 60 drivers per day. Entry fees are $60 for a single driver, $80 for a shared entry. Who's AbilityFirst?: AbilityFirst provides recreational activities for the developmentally delayed community. Some of the participants are planning on coming to Saturday's event to watch and ride shotgun! Visit www.calclub.com for more event information.

Sun and Fun for opening Rally Cross National Challenge

SAN BERNARDINO (May 20, 2012)

All eyes were on Glen Helen Raceway for the RallyCross National Challenge season opener. The Southern Pacific Division stop of the National Challenge series was hosted by the Cal Club region and pulled in an outstanding 70 drivers. Sun and heat were the order of the weekend and just to insure the events uniqueness, thrown in was a late afternoon solar eclipse. The SoPac National Challenge use the accumulated time of twelve runs, six on Saturday and six on Sunday to determine the winners. In the Stock Front Wheel Drive class, Bill Martin and Danny Downey battled closely through the first day. On the second day Bill Martin more than made up his 5 second deficit, dominating in the Sunday morning muddy conditions. First year RallyCrossers fill the Stock Rear Wheel drive class where the two leaders Tom Kwasniak and Ken Lord traded individual runs. Small gains turned into a big win for the Bradipo RallySport MR2 of Tom Kwasniak taking the top spot. Similar outcome was had in Stock All Wheel Drive where 16 drivers vied for the lead. Brent Smith in his Burnt Dirt Subaru squeaking out a lead on each day to build a comfortable 11 second win over the hard charging Pete Landry. Alex Orozco and Randy Gallman shared the Speed Energy/Stilo Suzuki Swift to take the top two spots in Prepared Front Wheel Drive. Alex showing marked improvement on the second day to

stretch his first day 5 second lead into a 20 second victory. Prepared Rear Wheel Drive was full to brim with Mazda products, 6 drivers in all. First day’s results showed Jayson Woodruff taking a large lead over the field, but second day’s racing had the rest of the field

making up large gains. A hard charging new comer Jared Volz made up much of Saturday’s deficit but fell 5 seconds short to Jayson’s Miata sponsored by JayComServices. The most dynamic class of the weekend had to be continued on next page

Prepared All Wheel Drive. After day one Brent Blakely had found himself at the top with Thomas Bloess just two tenths behind and a second very tight battle for third through fifth 15 seconds out. might just have given us a glimpse into the future as young driver Brent Hercelinsky convincingly took out both past national champions, Ken Cashion and local mainstay Eric Martin. Hercelinsky’s Suzukird/Stilo Suzuki Swift was

fastest in class both days and managed to straight time Mod AWD on Sunday. For the first time Modified Rear Wheel drive cars were given their own class at an SCCA National event and nine driver’s took advantage of this

June - 2012 new opportunity. Michael Cadwell made the most of his 325 BMW by winning all twelve rounds over the rest of the class. Never more than a couple seconds down per lap Omar Cardenas’ retrofitted RWD Subaru Impreza Wagon finished second. The largest field of the weekend was found in Modified All Wheel drive where 16 Subaru’s and one Mitsubishi competed in the quickest class. After a three tenths deficit on the first day Andrew Holman charged forward in his STi Wagon to take the win over John Chabot by almost two seconds. Regional Championships brew after Cal Club Double Regional Buttonwillow (May 19-20, 2012) Cal Club’s second Double Regional of 2012 hosted the annual Open Wheel Festival, a time trials event and our regular race schedule. Event officials adjusted the race line up leaving five groups plus one for time trials. Clear sunny skies and warm temperatures set the stage for a fantastic weekend of action packed racing. A highlight of the weekend tested the skills of F&C Specialist Candye Rucker. Candye was quick to respond to a burning Corvette during the first race Sunday morning. Matt Merrill was on fire and drove straight to Candye’s corner. She responded like a pro wasting no time extinguishing the flames. She gained control of the situation in no time allowing Matt Merrill to race his Corvette another day without too much damage.

GROUP 1 - AS, T1, ITA, ITS, PRO7, SSC AS - Chris Qualls was out of contention after five laps Saturday with mechanical problems just as he was set to tally another A Sedan win. Day two for Qualls was better. He hit all his marks before he picked up Sunday's AS checkered and credit for the overall win in Group 1 too. T1 - Matt Merrill and Al Camano in their T1 Corvette's set the race pace in the first race of the weekend. The two checked out from the pack with Merrill out front from the start. Rookie Camano pushed it but just couldn't reel in the leader. At the checkered Merrill tallied the T1 win with a 4.3 second advantage over Camano in second. Camano and Merrill picked

up where the left off yesterday. The two wasted no time mixing it up. First it was Camano out front then Merrill. It looked like Merrill was going to earn his second win of the weekend but on lap 13 it all went wrong when he car caught fire. Camano moved back to first leading the final three laps before he scored the T1 victory. Merrill was

credited with second place, three laps down to the winner. ITA - The battle that followed T1 on Saturday turned out to be as intense as racing gets. An eight car roster in ITA set the stage for a flat out race from the start. Initially, it was Rookie Wesley Mollno who set the race pace through lap 6 ahead of Darwin Felix and Todd Launchbaugh.

June - 2012 However, on a mad dash from the back was Alex Brauer who was knocking on the podium door. On lap 7 Felix moved to first as Brauer secured third. Two laps later Mollno moved back to the point as Brauer set his plan of attack for the lead. He made his move on the final lap crossing the line with a 0.5 of a second advantage over Mollno in second and Felix in third. Alan Leukhardt finished fourth ahead of Launchbaugh who rounded out the top five. ITA on Sunday unfolded to be all about Mollno. He collected the lead on the first lap and never considered anything but winning. He led all 15 laps before securing a solid win. Mollno held off a challenges from Leukhardt and Brauer who finished second and third. Felix was fourth ahead of Ramon Niebla who completed the top five. Other stand outs included Steven Champlin in sixth and Ed Nazarian in seventh. Launchbaugh had anoth-

day's win with another victory in ITS on Sunday. He was smack dab in the middle of the ITA showdown. His effort Sunday earned him a seventh place overall result. PRO7 - Veteran driver Jim Rueff set the Pro7 pace

Saturday before he collected the class win. Rueff led from the start as Walter Sheek and Celanie Radbourne raced for position. At the checkered behind the winning Rueff was Sheek in second and Radbourne in third. Sunday was a ditto performance in Pro7 for the entire field. Rueff again set the pace then scored his second win of the weekend ahead of Sheek in second. Four laps down was Radbourne in third spot.

SSC - Calvin Lui was the only entry in SSC this weekend but that didn't slow him down one bit. Saturday, Lui raced his Honda Fit to a first place finish in SSC after 14 laps of competition plus collected a 13th overall result. GROUP 3 - F2000, FF See Pacific F2000 & Formula F race reports on pages 17-19. GROUP 4 - SPEC MIATA A 17 car Spec Miata roster made up one of the hottest races of the day on Saturday. On lap 1 it was Grant Westmorland out front ahead of Clement Lee and Curtis Gong. The top three were strong but a race was brewing from fourth on. Wesley Mollno, Todd Launchbaugh and Darwin Felix

each battled for the position. With six laps to go it was Felix settled in fourth ahead of Mollno and Launchbaugh. On lap 13 Launchbaugh was out as Francis Hu moved up one

position. As the race wound down it was no surprise to see Lee out front after passing Westmorland for the lead on lap 6. Lee led the pack to the checkered

where he earned another Spec Miata win ahead of Westmorland in second and Gong in third. Felix fought hard to secure fourth as Mollno rounded out the top five. Brauer salvaged a sixth after coming from the rear ahead of Hu in seventh. Alan Leukhardt finished eighth ahead of Bill Nelson in ninth with Angela Swan completed the top 10. Sunday Spec Miata had Gong out front from the start. He led the first two laps before Lee pressed him for the lead. On lap 3 Lee passed Gong for the lead. One lap later Westmorland made a move pushing Gong to third. The top three raced in order through

lap 8. On the ninth circuit Mollno moved forward to capture third position from Gong. Gong had issues that pulled him off the pace eventually out on lap 14. With Gong out the door opened for Swan who worked her way to the front. She put a move on Mollno to secure third with just one lap to go. Lee, Westmoreland and Swan set sail for their final lap. At the checkered Lee padded his Spec Miata point lead with another win as Westmorland and Swan secured their spots on the Spec Miata box. In fourth at the flag was Mollno ahead of Mark Lange in fifth. Brauer finished sixth ahead of Felix in seventh, Nelson

GROUP 5 - FA, FM, CSR, SRF, SF, FV, CF, DSR FA - Chris Emanuel was the guy to beat in this mixed bag of a race Saturday afternoon. The may be the first time in Cal Club history SRF & FV were combined with FA . It all worked out as Emanuel managed to lap his way through the extremely slower field of cars without incident. Emanuel was forced to pit for a loose body panel but recovered to collect the overall and FA win after 15 laps of competition. Sunday was a much better day for Emanuel with his lap times down and closer to normal. He whistled around Buttonwillow with ease before he secured another FA win in as may attempts this weekend. FM - Dutch Schultz was on the gas Saturday as he and Richard Seegman put on a show. On lap five Schultz captured the overall lead for 10 circuits when the FA leader responded to a Meatball flag. At the checkered Schultz earned the first place Formula Mazda trophy ahead of Seegman in second.

CSR - The fastest sports racer Saturday in this group was driven by Michael Alfred. His 1983 Beasley B2 led him to a first place finish in C Sports Racer topped off with a clean third place overall result. Alfred, sandwiched between the Formula Mazda battle on Sunday, raced from the green to the checkered nailing his goal of collecting his second CSR win of the weekend. SRF - It was no surprise to see Mark Ballengee out front in SRF on Saturday as he worked to pad his point lead. It was good to see multi time SRF champion Aaron Stein back on track and running up front as he pushed Ballengee from the start. However, at the checkered it was Ballengee who secured the win ahead of Stein in second and third went to Las Vegas driver Paul Raby. Doug Stewart made a last lap move to snatch fourth from Denny Fosdick who rounded out the top five. The 10 car SRF battle Sunday was again under the control of Ballengee. He is the man to beat in SRF regional competition and this day was no different. From the start Ballengee set the pace ahead of Stein, Jon French and Jonathan Allen. A battle brewed

for fifth between Raby, Stewart and Fosdick. Each held the position but it was Fosdick who conquered the spot. At the checkered it was no surprise to see Ballengee again collect the win ahead of Stein and French who filled the SRF podium in second and third spots. Allen held on to fourth at the flag ahead of Fosdick in fifth. Pascal Donzel secured sixth at the flag holding off rivals Raby in seventh and Stewart in eighth. SF - Arthur Beach was the next class leader to collect a win on Saturday. Beach raced his 1978 Crossle 32F to a first place finish in Spec Ford after the 14 lap contest. His effort also earned him a solid seventh place overall finish holding off all but two of the fastest SRF entries. Beach upped his game Sunday and was able to hold off any challenge from the SRF pack who were in hot pursuit. He finished first in Spec Ford again earning a solid fifth overall finish. FV - We keep saying it over and over and time and time again, anytime Formula Vee national drivers Charlie Turner and Mark Edwards show up for a regional you better find your way track-

side to see one of the best races of the day. They're here to have fun! It happened again Saturday as the pair put on a show that lived up to our expectations. Turner held the early advantage through lap 1 over Edwards. Edwards put the move on Turner on the second circuit and held the lead through lap 6. Turner snatched the lead back but three laps later so did Edwards. Back and forth they went. When push came to shove it was Turner out front when the checkered flew defeating Edwards in second. Edwards looked like he brought more game to the show on Sunday by securing the FV lead from the green. But the cagey Turner had something for Edwards. On lap 2

Turner made his move on Edwards then controlled the pace to the checkered. At the flag Turner tallied his second win of the weekend ahead of Edwards in second. CF - Saturday afternoon rookie Dan Skeeters pushed his Crosslee F-35 to the checkered flag earning the win in Club Ford after 12 laps of competition. Sunday, Skeeters was hooked up again and raced from the green to the checkered earning his second Club Ford win of the weekend. DSR - Only completing nine laps but enough to secure the DSR win, John Waddell was victorious in his 2002 Stohr

GROUP 6 - ASC, SP, ITE, STL ASC - The only ASC entry driven by Kevin Callahan easily set Group 6 race pace Saturday afternoon. On lap 1 Callahan took control of the race then led every lap before he tallying the ASC win and overall victory with a whopping 1:14.7 gap on his closest challenger, Super Production winner Robert Green. Callahan was back to set the pace in the final race of the weekend Sunday afternoon and tallied another ASC win. He pushed his Chevy Super Truck to another class win and easily earned credit for the overall victory as well.

Super Production from the start. Green pushed his Noble M400 in the direction of victory lane from the start. But on 13 John Schectzer moved up from fourth position to capture the lead from Green. Schectzer held his advantage for three laps then fell off the scope as Green moved back to first. At the checkered it was Green in first with Schectzer in second, one lap down. Joshua Pitt finished third after running as high as second. Bruce Powers tallied fourth ahead of Ron Bailey in fifth. Bob Kelley showed up Sunday to capture some of the Super Production glory from yesterday's podium finishers. Kelley led every lap before he secured the class win ahead of Green in second and Bailey in third. Pitt was out after four laps with a DNF.

Gassen raced to the checkered where he nailed Saturday's ITE win. Calcagnie suffered a DNF. STL - Dale Shoemaker raced his Mazda Miata to another class win in STL Saturday after 14 laps of competition. He topped off the day with a respectable fourth overall finish. Shoemaker had new comp on Sunday as Karen Zarterman entered her Mazda to do battle for the STL trophy. Shoemaker had the pace covered though and managed to maintain his dominance by capturing his second class win of the weekend ahead of Zarterman in second at the checkered.

Kelley and Ford victorious in Round 5 F2000 at Buttonwillow

(May 19, 2012) – Round five of the Pacific F2000/Formula F Super Series was held on the 2.640 mile 14CW track at Buttonwillow Raceway Park. The event was run as part of the Cal Club Region of the SCCA Double Regional weekend and was held under sunny skies with warm temperatures typical for this time of year. Qualifying began at 10:45 a.m. and fifteen cars took to the track including five of the six Formula F cars entered and immediately the qualifying duel began between Bobby Kelley in his #21, A & B Equipment, Dave Freitas Racing Van Diemen and David Cheng, a series veteran making a one off guest appearance in the series this weekend driving the #4 C.J. Wilson’s Children’s Charities Van Diemen for PR1 Motorsports. Kelley and Cheng traded fast laps until it was finally Kelley who managed to wrestle the pole away from Cheng by a mere thirteen one thousandths of a second. Camren Kaminsky in the #34 PR1 Van Diemen was next followed by Bob Negron, #9 Terri Negron Web Design Negron Racing Van Diemen, back to defend his Master Class (drivers 51 and up) championship, and Les Phillips, #2 Swiss Implants, Porterfield Brakes Van Diemen, current Master Class point leader, all of which managed times within one second of the pole time. Next up was Peter Thomas, #7 Refrigeration Control Co., PR1 Van Diemen followed by Camden Geise having a fraught weekend having already had an engine change in the #6, DFR Van Diemen, Peter West, #99, Frank Monise Motors Van Diemen, Chris Hundley another former series runner back for this weekend in the #62 Limousine Connection, DFR Van Diemen and Nick

The Formula F group was again led by Conner Ford in the #77 JF Excavating & Grading, Western Nevada Supply, Sparco USA, PR1 Motorsports, Mygale/Honda ahead of Ed Erlandson, back after winning both rounds of the B. F. Goodrich Super Tour Double National. Erlandson, driving the #8 Artwork by Eli, Porter Racing, Loyning, Goodyear Swift DB6/Ford, managed to get within six tenths of Ford. This pair was trailed by Al Salvo, #23 Miracle Sealants, Corsa Care, PR1 Mygale/Honda, Sage Marie, returning after his outing at Miller Motorsports Park in the #17 Honda Performance Development Piper/Honda and Jerry Andersen, #0 Swift DB1/Ford. When the green flag waved it was Kelley who took the lead followed by Kaminsky and Cheng as the field headed toward turn 1with a slight gap to the FF group led by Ford and Erlandson and at the end of the first lap it was Kelley, Kaminsky, Cheng, Negron, Phillips, Thomas, Geise, West, Hundley and Kodenko. The Formula F group was led by Ford, closely pursued by

Erlandson and Salvo with Marie, Neil Roberts, who had missed qualifying in his Keenan Honda, Think Fast E n g i n e e r i n g , ThinkFastBook.com, Swift DB6/Honda and Andersen. Cheng passed Kaminsky on lap two and began his pursuit of Kelley in a battle that lasted the entire race with Cheng always applying the pressure and Kelley able to withstand it lap after lap to the end of the race with Kelley finishing only 2.395 seconds ahead of Cheng for his third win of the season to extend his points lead. Cheng in his dogging of Kelley managed the fastest race lap with a 1:40.784 good for two points and bragging rights. Behind the Kelley/Cheng battle, Kaminsky and Negron had an equally spirited battle with Negron holding the early advantage, having gotten by Kaminsky on lap three. Kaminsky fought back and got by Negron on lap eleven and held the final podium position until lap fifteen, the penultimate lap, when an off track excursion cost him not only the third place but dropped him to seventh place at the finish. Negron held on to take the third place finish and with it the Victory in the Master continued on next page

Page 18 Class and showed that his time away from the series had not diminished his pace. Fourth Place went to Camden Geise, who after his ill-fortune on Friday and in qualifying charged back to defend his second place standing in the points starting seventh and working his way up to fourth at the finish by first passing Thomas then Phillips and gaining his last position on Kaminsky’s misfortune. His drive earned him the Wine Country Motorsports Hard Charger Award. Phillips had another competitive drive to fifth place and was followed by Peter Thomas, whose sixth place finish netted him the Expert Class (drivers 3550) win. Kaminsky, Hundley, West and Kodenko finished seventh through tenth respectively. Conner Ford raced to another dominant victory in the now familiar Mygale/Honda, not putting a wheel wrong and showing the poise, consistency and skill that earned him the F2000 series title last year. His victory was his fourth of the season and coupled with the race’s fastest lap give him a huge points lead as the series has reached its midway point. Following Ford home was teammate Al Salvo in and identically prepared Mygale/Honda after a race long duel with Erlandson that saw Salvo get by Erlandson on lap nine to take the position he was to hold to the end to give PR1 Motorsports a one-two finish. Erlandson finished third and was followed by Andersen, Marie, who dropped out with low oil pressure and Roberts who only managed three laps before electrical problems sidelined him. (May 20, 2012) – Buttonwillow Raceway Park was the site of the Pacific F2000/Formula F Super Series Championship Presented by Corsa Car Care round six. Again using the 2.640 mile 14CW track the event was run as part of the Cal Club Region of the SCCA Double Regional weekend and was the first race of the day with an 11:15 start. An 8:30 qualifying session meant cooler temperatures but that didn’t keep the battle for the pole from heating up as

again Bobby Kelley in his #21, A & B Equipment, Dave Freitas Racing Van Diemen and David Cheng, #4 C.J. Wilson’s Children’s Charities, PR1 Van Diemen picked up right where they left off on Saturday trading fast laps. Again it was Kelley who finally prevailed to wrest the pole away from Cheng with a lap of 1m40.277s. The second row of the grid was made up of Camren Kaminsky in the #34 PR1 Van Diemen and Bob Negron, #9 continued on next page

In the Formula F group Conner Ford in the #77 JF Excavating & Grading, Western Nevada Supply, Sparco USA, PR1 Motorsports, Mygale/Honda with over a second and a half advantage over Ed Erlandson in the #8 Artwork by Eli, Porter Racing, Loyning, Goodyear Swift DB6/Ford. Kelley took the lead at the green flag and was followed by Cheng, Kaminsky and Geise as the field set off on the first lap. Kelley led lap one followed by Cheng, Kaminsky, Geise, Negron, Phillips, Thomas, Hundley and Kodenko with West having called at the pits to retire with a misfiring engine. The Formula F group was led by Ford, with Salvo, Roberts, Marie, Erlandson, and Andersen. Lap 2 saw Cheng pass Kelley for the lead, a position he would hold for the next several laps and this was also the lap Geise wrested third place away from Kaminsky as the pair fought for third place and Negron dropped from fifth

Cal Club News to ninth. Cheng led until lap seven when Kelley was able to take a short lived lead as Cheng was back in the lead on the next lap and held on to the end scoring a seventh win in the series for the Sammamish, Washington resident by a comfortable 5.817 seconds over Kelley. Geise and Kaminsky managed to break away from the field in the battle to claim the final step of the podium. After a brief exchange of positions on lap eleven, Geise regained the spot on the next lap and held on to take a fine third place finish with Kaminsky fourth. Fifth place went to Negron, who after dropping to ninth worked his way back to fifth by getting by Thomas, who spun on lap three, and Kodenko. He trailed Hundley for three laps before passing him and got his final spot when Phillips spun and got high centered with four laps to go. Negron again claimed the Master Class (drivers 51 and over) honors. Sixth and seventh went to Hundley, hoping to enjoy more series events, and Kodenko with Thomas claiming eight spot and the Expert Class (drivers 35-50) win. Formula F honors again went to Conner Ford who was un-harried in his cruise to victory, claiming his fifth win and a commanding lead in the title chase. Behind Ford in the race for second it was Salvo who prevailed but not without fending off the challenges first of Marie and then Roberts as the Honda powered cars fought it out to see which would stand on the podium as Honda swept the first four places. Salvo held on for second followed by Roberts, who took his first podium after a sixteen year layoff and Marie. Erlandson would up fifth on three cylinders and Andersen was sixth. 2012 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Highlights By Larry Mason The IZOD IndyCar Series finally arrived in Long Beach with a new chassis and with turbocharged power plants from Chevy, Honda, and Lotus. Gone with the wind was “Danicar” replaced by a driver with three times as many Twitter followers as his teammate Tony Kanaan. Of course the arrival of Rubens Barrichello brought a much needed boost to the series both domestically and internationally. Additionally, the “Mayor of Hinchtown” James Hinchcliffe infused the media with his sense of humor and showed off his outright speed. Friday was essentially a washout, so the experience level played a role in getting up to speed quickly for the precious track time Saturday and Sunday. Of course, being Long Beach, the sun and the crowds were shining brightly for those weekend days. IZOD IndyCar Series I was looking forward to seeing the new cars in person to see if they were as “ugly” (strictly my opinion, yet shared by many) as they looked in the photos I had seen. Unfortunately for me, seeing them in person did nothing to change my opinion. Well at least they’re back to being turbocharged. However, with their limited horsepower, they didn’t rocket off of the hairpin like the Champ Cars used to. Furthermore, they weren’t hitting big speed numbers at the end of Shoreline Drive. Well, at least they switched to carbon brakes so they’d have greater braking performance at the end of the long straights. Again, I was surprised to see that the drivers weren’t braking any later then they had in previous years. At this point you’re probably thinking, “Does Larry have anything good to say about

Josef Newgarden’s brief foray to the front of the field ended just a few yards later stuffed into the Turn 1 tire barrier. Larry Mason Photo

this?” The answer is yes. From a racing standpoint, the entire field put on a tremendous show with lots of passing throughout the race. Different pit strategies led to fuel saving for some, and sprints for others, mixing up the field. One other factor that played a role in the excitement was the fact that all of the Chevy powered drivers were docked 10 spots from their qualifying times due to an unauthorized engine change dictated by Chevrolet after the Sears Point open test. This allowed Dario Franchitti to “grab pole position” with rookie Josef Newgarden driving for the underfunded Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing team to share the front row. Before I get to the start of the race, let me begin and end the story of the Lotus powered cars. It didn’t matter where they started as they were either going to drop out with mechanical issues or fall to the back due to being uncompetitive. It’s a sad but true story and the current state of affairs. Friday was essentially a washout although in the morning wet, but drying practice;

Marco Andretti put a set of slicks on a few minutes from the end and set the quickest time. In the afternoon qualifying, only the Target Chip Ganassi duo of Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon braved the weather. Franchitti did one lap and Dixon hit the wall. Firestone Fast Six qualifying saw Ryan Briscoe earn the pole position just a tenth ahead of his teammate Will Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay. I asked Franchitti at the post-qualifying press conference how much the track had changed during the session. He answered, “It normally changes a lot anyway with all of the rubber going down because of the Firestone Reds. But I think it probably changed more than in years past because there was the green track, there was no rubber. Yeah, as the session went on, as different sessions went on, it definitely changed more than I’ve seen here in the past.” After he left the microphone, I also asked him about the differences he sees with the Honda and Chevy powerplants and he continued on next page

June - 2012 snapped back, “I don’t know, I’m not driving a Chevy.” I pushed for more information saying, Yeah, but you’ve been on the track with them; is there any place where you notice a difference?” He just looked at me and snarled his nose. . . I asked Newgarden basically the same question and he also sidestepped the answer. I went up to him after he had left the podium’s microphone and said that perhaps he had misunderstood my question. He told me that he hadn’t but he wasn’t able to talk about it. He had to be politically correct. Not that I was looking to spear the hearts of an engine manufacturer, but come on guys, just state the facts. If the competition is faster off the slow corners or the end of the straights, just say so. Sorry, I digress. . . Ryan Briscoe talked about how physical the new car and track combination is and how that’s visible from the in-car cameras. “Yeah, I think it’s cool, I think we were carrying four cameras on our cars each this weekend. It gives everyone a good view of all of the different dynamics going on. One is how physical it is, you see that through the wheel. Every bump, you sort of feel that through the steering wheel, and you need to be fit and you need to be strong; part of IndyCar racing.” At the start Newgarden drafted past and out-braked Franchitti into Turn 1. As you know, two-wide into T1 doesn’t usually end up well. Ditto for Newgarden. Whether or not there was contact, Newgarden stuffed it into the driver’s right tire barrier as Franchitti rushed away. All was not right though with the four-time series champ. He never seemed to have the speed in his car during the race to compete for the win. After the caution, Justin Wilson took advantage and jumped out to the lead and started pulling away. The Long Beach snake-bit driver who’s always run well here to seemingly always end up with some issue or another, held the lead

Cal Club News for 15 laps building a gap as large as seven seconds in the process. Wilson set the second-fastest lap of the day (and fastest of the Honda powered cars) but due to pit issues and fuel strategy wound up 10th. The race really came to a head during the last few laps as Takuma Sato was saving fuel in second place behind Power. With five laps to go Pagenaud passed Sato for second place just over five seconds behind Power. Pagenaud put on a heck of a drive taking over a second a lap out of Power’s lead. This was going to go down to the wire. On the last lap Pagenaud was one second behind and charging hard but he wasn’t the only one. Hunter-Reay tried to pass Sato into Turn 6 and punted him into a spin. Meanwhile, Power had saved enough fuel that the Penske team told him to use as much fuel as he needed to go as fast as he wanted. He did just that and narrowly held his advantage at the checkers.

Page 21 The race took a penaltyinfused twist from the HunterReay/Sato incident. Hinchcliffe moved past Sato and with Hunter-Reay’s 30-second penalty for avoidable contact, the “Mayor of Hinchtown” snared the final step of the podium. In the post-race press conference, Hinchcliffe and Pagenaud put on a comedy routine with Hinchcliffe making faces while Pagenaud looked the other way. Pagenaud was in a good mood anyway as he had scored his best-ever finish in the IZOD IndyCar Series. As those two departed, Power came to the podium and answered one question about his drive from 12th on the grid to victory that stunned many of the onlookers. “I go into every season thinking that there's no way I can win another race,” Power said, “I don't know why I feel like that, but I do, and that's always - I guess I have an insecurity or something or I don't believe in myself enough.

Yeah, that's always my feeling.” Apparently that insecurity serves him well behind the wheel of an IndyCar. . . Firestone Indy Lights Sebastian Saavedra returned from the IZOD IndyCar Series to compete again in Firestone Indy Lights. That risky move down a level seemed to pay dividends when he earned the pole position with a late flying lap. Esteban Guerrieri who had pole last year qualified second and when I saw his car on the warm-up lap I knew he would be in front soon. He was running a low down-force setup that was clearly visible looking at his rear wing compared to Saavedra. Sure enough, he used that extra speed to his advantage at the drop of the green down Shoreline Drive and never looked back. Not to say he cruised to an easy victory - not at all. He was driving what looked like qualifying laps all race long on the ragged edge sawing at the wheel pushing that Dallara for all it had. Compared to last year, he made no mistakes. With a year of experience under his belt, he parlayed that knowledge into a well-earned victory. Tristan Vautier who won the race in St. Pete crashed his car in Turn 5 during qualifying. FIL officials penalized the

new-spec Firestone tires, “It’s good for the Firestone Indy Lights series that the tires go off in the end so you have to manage them - you have to think in the car. It’s not always 100 percent, and you have to drive it, which is the most difficult part. I’m very happy to be able to win.” Tequila Patron American Le Mans Series With qualifying washed out, the starting grid was based on championship points. The cars in this series are gorgeous, the sounds can be scintillating, however the top classes in this series is still underdeveloped in the sheer numbers category. Only three cars entered in LMP1, and four in LMP2 makes you think that they should go back to one combined group of LMP. The LMPC category had eight cars entered and even finished third through fifth overall. The GT class is always strong with multiple manufacturers while the GTC field for Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars rounded out the field with six entries. In the race, the Muscle Milk HPD ARX-03a Honda driven by Lucas Luhr and Klaus Graf were able to best the “pole” starting Chris Dyson and Guy Smith Lola B12/60 Mazda. The LMPC Oreca FLM 09 driven by Alex Popow and Ryan Dalziel finished 3rd overall followed by

Memo Gidley/Michael Guasch. The GT class Corvette of Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner finished 6th overall followed by the GT BMW of Joey Hand/ Dirk Muller and the Ferrari of Scott Sharp/Johannes Van Overbeek. The first LMP2 car (Honda ARX) finished 10th overall and was driven by Scott Tucker and Christophe Bouchout. The next closest P2 car was 17th overall – the Morgan of Martin Plowman/David Heinmeier Hansson. In GTC, Peter LaSaffre and Damien Faulkner edged the Cooper MacNeil/Leh Keen duo for the win. Toyota Pro/Celebrity With qualifying rained out, the grid was set based on practice times. Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy) was presented with the People Pole Award and named the charity “One Heart Source” in Africa as the designee of his $15,000 award. Second quick was Adam Carolla (Adam Carolla Show) while in the Pro division, drifter Frederic Asabø went a wee bit quicker than last year’s celebrity winner (and this year driving as a Pro) William Fichtner (Entourage). In the race, Carolla stalked Coates and was able to take the lead out-braking Coates into Turn 1 on fourth lap. Meanwhile, Asabø was weav-

Page 23 ing his way through the field after starting 30 seconds back with the rest of the Pros. Carolla wasn’t done racing yet as Hill Harper (CSI: NY) raced his way through the field after starting eighth to battle with Carolla. Harper tried in vain to pass Carolla even giving him a wee bit of a love tap going into Turn 8 a couple of laps from the end but couldn’t complete the pass. He ended up finishing just under a second behind at the checkers. Asabø held off Fichtner for the win in the Pro division after Bryan Clauson, who was running second, pounded the tire barrier in Turn 8 trying to pass a slower celebrity. Carolla said afterwards, “It’s a really amazing feeling to win. And I’m also thrilled to benefit the kids at the children’s hospitals – and also the parents, who are by their kid’s side around the clock. This win is for the parents!” Pirelli World Challenge A stellar start by GT pole-sitter Randy Pobst in his AWD Volvo S60 was not enough to keep a determined Andy Pilgrim in his Cadillac CTS-V from pouncing at the end of Shoreline Drive a short time into the race. From there, Pilgrim cruised to victory while Pobst had to settle for second and the sister Cadillac driven by Johnny O’Connell rounded out the podium. In the GTS category, Jack Baldwin of SCCA Trans-Am fame made a tremendous start in his Porsche Cayman and drove by pole-sitter Peter Cunningham’s Acura TSX and multiple GT competitors to win wire-to-wire. Near the end, Justin Bell (Los Angeles) was making a charge in his Ford Mustang Boss 302S but couldn’t get close enough to the wily veteran. Other California drivers competing over the weekend included: Dino Crescentini, James Sofronas, Tomy Drissi, Anders Hainer, Brent Holden, and Nick Esayian.

Around SoPac Division Arizona Border Motonishi earns Gumout Super Challenge at El Toro Pro Solo

Autocross Calendar

IRVINE, Calif. (May 9, 2012) – Longtime top soloist Ken Motonishi had never made it past the round of eight in a Gumout Super Challenge at a Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo event, and wasn’t about to waste a chance to finally grab that elusive win this weekend at the El Toro Pro Solo in Irvine, Calif. Motonishi qualified for the elimination-bracket Gumout Super Challenge as just the fourth-quickest driver in the 26car Street Touring R class. Once in, however, the work was hardly done. Motonishi’s Mazda MX-5 was matched against Andy McKee’s Mazda RX-7. Motonishi knew that McKee’s RX-7 would be much quicker on the second run once the tires were warmed, but was only able to carry a narrow lead after the first pair of runs. By his own accord, Motonishi drove his best lap of the event to keep the margin over McKee and motor on to Round Two. After dodging that bullet, Motonishi was able to settle in and run consistent laps to move through the field. Motonishi disposed of Doug Rowse’s D Street Preparedleading BMW 330 in the second round, and exorcised his round-of-eight demons with a win against Ryan Buetzer’s ChaseCam/Albin Bowling Supply Pontiac Solstice to move into the semi-finals. Not ready to miss an opportunity, Motonishi locked down

In the opposite bracket, Steve Lau’s A Stock qualifying Porsche Cayman topped bestqualifying Street Modified’s Mike Simanyi (OS Giken/ABL Original Parts BMW M3) to square off with Motonishi in the championship round. While Motonishi was landing the Gumout Super Challenge title, Simanyi bested Trotter for third place. Christine Grice drove her top qualifying Berry Family Racing/Hoosier/OS Giken Mitsubishi Evo to the Ladies Challenge title over Nicole Nagler. Nagler was the top qualifier in Ladies Class 3, driving the Toyo Tires/ProParts USA Honda Civic past Kim Whitener to make the finals. Grice topped Round 1 Ladies Challenge winner Shelly Monfort in the semi-finals. More information on the TireRack SCCA ProSolo Series is available at www.scca.com.

Jason (951) 315-3710 or Jason@UnbalancedEngineering.c om ‘99 Spec Miata for sale Originally built by RDR (Robert Davis Racing) for Mazda. This car was never a street car: Mazda provided the new chassis to RDR, it started as a showroom Stock and was converted by RDR to a SM. It was the “showcar” for mazda, owned by Nick Esayian (world challenge acura/BMW racer), who ran it 1 year in SSB. I bought it from Nick. Serviced improved by Rush and Motorsport. No expense spared. I don’t abuse the car, I am a short shifter!, being just a mid pack racer I never needed to push the car beyond normal since the driver was the slower part of the combination…!! Over the years I have done maybe 23 races a year on averageCar comes with 3 sets of matching wheels, all tires in good shape, some with only 1 week end, I always rotate my sets through heat cycles. Car set up for 6'4” driver. Cool suit set up in trunk with hoses to front and switch on dash. Asking $18,000 with all wheels. OBO Make me a reasonable offer.
