SCBIZ Accounting Power List & Best Places to Work 2022

ACCOUNTING

Accountants

long ago shed the stereotypes of “bean counters” and “numbers crunchers.”

Probably the green visor, too.

Today’s professionals are up to speed on the latest technology and innovations that continue to shape the industry.

Cloud-based accounting. Arti cial intelligence. Block chain. Accounting has evolved rapidly, much of which was brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic and a virtual work environment.

e executives on the following pages that make up our 2022 Accounting Power List know this all too well. It’s adapt or be le behind. As you can tell from their pro les, they’re thriving.

I want to note that the Accounting Power List is purely subjective, and not in any way scienti c. SCBIZ Magazine sta (mainly myself) researched our list of South Carolina’s largest accounting rms, and searched the web, to nd the best candidates. I feel like this is a well-rounded list.

You might notice that some pro les are shorter than others. Due to space constraints, we had to make some trims. Pro les in their entirety will appear on the online version on SC Biz News’ website.

We’ll be doing plenty more Power Lists in various industries in future editions of SCBIZ Magazine. Feel free to contact me if you know someone doing big things in their profession, and in their community.

As always, thanks for reading.

NATURCHEM INC. DBA OPTERRA SOLUTIONS

Highest-ranking executive and title in SC: Nick Hook, CEO

Location: Lexington

Why are you a best place to work? Our company is a vegetation management services organization; we provide our services to government and commercial clients as part of infrastructure and safety needs. We are often confused for landscaping or grounds maintenance services. However, our services are narrowed into industrial vegetation management needs that include weed control, turfgrass maintenance, stormwater system intervention and other highly specialized services. This means we exist in a narrow niche in the marketplace. It allows us to create our own ideas of best practices rather than an industry status quo. We draw from our employees’ experience and training to transform. We encourage all our employees, from the CEO to the entry-level technician, to dream up solutions and innovations for our company. Our workgroups use experiential knowledge and training as a foundation, but each operates like its own training ground. They develop and filter new thoughts up the organizational chart, rather than everything being handed down from the top. We pride ourselves on creating our own leaders who worked their way up the ranks and displayed our core values.

1THS CONSTRUCTORS FOUNDER WANTED EMPLOYEES TO OWN IT. LITERALLY

Alot

of business operators want their employees to take ownership of their responsibilities.

THS Constructors founder T. Howard Suitt had a way to make it happen: by giving employees a chance not only to own their jobs, but to own the company, too. All employees were offered a chance to buy Class C shares in the company, and now THS Constructors is 100% employee owned.

Suitt “had a clear mission for the company to be an employee-owned, relationship-focused construction services company committed to its clients, partners and suppliers,” the company said in a questionnaire.

“THS is intentional about providing employees with benefits and career growth opportunities. We work together as a team and motivate each other for continuous growth. We have a very family-oriented culture. When we look for others to join our team, we look to find the right personnel who want to grow with us.”

The company, which offers half-day Fridays for employ-

ees, says it was built by attracting the right people — those willing to work together as one, united by common values and goals.

The firm uses “The THS Blueprint,” which was created to ensure that its actions align with its values, including a list of “Our Fundamentals” and “Guiding Principals” stated on its website.

“Transparency and addressing issues early are a keystone for THS,” the company stated. “THS is intentional about providing employees with benefits and career growth opportunities. We work together as a team and motivate each other for continuous growth. ... When we look for others to join our team, we look to find the right personnel who want to grow with us.”

It means we truly care about one another in a way that makes us a destination for top talent. We offer professional development and employees feel that the company and leaders are invested in their growth.

Only somewhat funny.

There’s a reason people in our industry love awards: we’re terrible people and we really love ourselves. Well that’s not entirely true—only most of us are horrible.

In over 23 years of advertising and branding, we’ve won our fair share of awards. Some are better

than others (we still can’t find Geoff’s award-winning banana bread recipe from 2002. Man, that was good.) But we never thought we’d win this award. We suppose we have to break out the brown bananas again.
