The Architect’s Perspective CARY PERKINS, AIA
ARCHITECT AND ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL MCMILLAN PAZDAN SMITH ARCHITECTURE
I’VE HAD MY EYE ON: The Greenville County Museum of Art When I was an undergraduate majoring in studio art at Converse College, prior to seeking my architectural degree, I went on many field trips to this building! Now, as an architect focused on visual and performing arts spaces, I have an even deeper appreciation for the Greenville County Museum of Art and the inspiration it offers for both art and architecture.
HOW I WOULD DESCRIBE IT TO A NON-ARCHITECT: At first glance, the museum building would seem very simple in its design. The geometry is basic but not boring and it’s made of concrete, which is a fairly common material that may seem plain to some. However, as you look at the building closely, you realize what care went into designing and creating it. Some of the simple touches that make this building so interesting are the various textures applied to the concrete walls, giving it variety and creating shadows and character. Much of the interior concrete was formed with horizontal boards so you can actually see and touch the impression of the wood grain in the walls.
WHY I THINK IT’S SIGNIFICANT: I believe that the GCMA is one of the finest examples of modern architecture in the Upstate, especially one with brutalist influence. The fact that it is a public building and that the experience of the artwork and architecture are so intertwined makes it a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. The artwork housed within the building is also significant and is nationally recognized for collections related to Southern and contemporary art, and the volume of the Andrew Wyeth work. It also houses one of the nation’s largest institutional collections of Jasper Johns’ work, which is fitting given that he was raised and educated in South Carolina.

I have loved this building since moving to South Carolina, and it happens to have been built the year I was born. One of my favorite personal possessions is a poster from the grand opening, held only two days after my birthday, featuring a print by Jasper Johns.
