ARTIST STATEMENT

Cigarette butts.

Rubber bands.

Coffee cup protectors.

Cash register receipts.

Bicycle inner tubes.

Close examination of ubiquitous man-made materials fascinates me. Situating objects in a new context is the ongoing challenge that keeps the sport of art making invigorating. Imbuing the mundane with new life is the goal of the game.

Thousands of discarded, disinfected cigarette butts, individually dipped in street striping paint and sewn on large canvas become an urban tapestry.

Assembled coffee cup protectors turned inside out transform light into a visual labyrinth.

Rubber bands coated in wax and individually hand-rubbed with graphite powder morph into a wind-driven rainstorm.

And hundreds of layered waxed receipts, their buttery surface undulating in hypnotic rhythm, create a quiet space for contemplation.

When choosing a cast off, the material always leads and informs the direction the work will take. I begin by coaxing it and then follow it to its destination. The process is pure engagement, fascination, and delight.

Although the work reflects society’s obsession with accumulation and consumption, it is the common, unremarkable object that is given center stage.

Eyes wide open.

Beauty in everything.
