A CITY FULL OF HISTORY, CULTURE AND ART

The former Roman city of Augsburg is extremely versatile. As the ‘City of Peace’ it has been celebrating Religious Peace with an annual festival for centuries. But it’s also known as the ‘City of Mozart’ and ‘City of Brecht’. Amadeus’ father, Leopold Mozart, was born here in 1719, as well as Bertolt Brecht in 1898. Augsburg was also the famous home of the influential merchant family Fugger, who settled here in 1367 and left their historically significant mark, still visible today. If you’re visiting Augsburg, make sure you stay at least a weekend. The UNESCO World Heritage ‘Augsburg Water Management System’ alone includes 19 monuments. There are, for example, the waterworks at the Red Gate with the oldest still preserved water towers of Central Europe, two fountain master houses and an aqueduct. Or, you can 46

visit the Augustus, Mercury and Hercules fountains, which form a trio of monumental fountains with numerous figures in late Renaissance style that is unique worldwide. Different tours and museums on the various subjects that the area is famous for allow for a deep dive into history. So, it only makes sense to check-in to one of Augsburg’s most leg-
