Scotland, Ireland and the USA are well known for their whisk(e)y production, but they are now getting some fierce competition from Switzerland. With a young and dynamic team of 16 employees, the distillery Langatun creates firstclass single malts.
Schottland, Irland oder die USA sind bekannt für die Whisk(e)yProduktion, Konkurrenz aber kommt aus der Schweiz: Mit einem jungen und dynamischen Team von 16 Mitarbeitern kreiert die Destillerie Langatun erstklassige Single Malts.
Among the outstanding Langatun products are the Old Woodpecker, one of only a few organically certified single malt whiskies on the market, and the Jacob’s Dram. This rounded and aromatic whisky ripens in pinot noir caskets and, in 2017, was voted ‘European Whisky of the Year’.
Zu den herausragenden Langatun-Produkten gehört der Old Woodpecker, einer der wenigen bio-zertifizierten Single Malt Whiskys auf dem Markt, oder der Jacob’s Dram. Dieser runde und aromatische Whisky reift in reinen Pinot Noir-Fässern und wurde 2017 zum ‚European Whisky of the Year‘ gewählt.
Next to fermentation and distillation, the storage in wine caskets is significant for a whisky’s sweetness, temperament and character. “Wine for us is always the starting point: we find a wine that tastes really good and then we take a look at how we might use the caskets,” says managing director Christoph Nyfeler. Amarone caskets, for example, create greater sweetness, while pinot noir gives more elegance and spiciness. The Langatun team regularly travels to wine regions in Portugal, Spain and Switzerland to test caskets. “In autumn, for instance, we visited the Beqaa Valley in Lebanon,” says Nyfeler. The distillery has been working together with some vineyards for many years.
Nach Gärung und Destillation, ist vor allem die Lagerung im Weinfass entscheidend für Süße, Temperament und Charakter des Whiskys. „Wein ist für uns stets die Ausgangslage: Wir finden einen Wein, der schmeckt, und dann schauen wir, wie wir die Fässer verwenden können“, sagt Geschäftsführer Christoph Nyfeler. Amarone-Fässer beispielsweise bringen mehr Süße, Pinot Noir entsprechend mehr Eleganz und Würze. Das Langatun-Team reist regelmäßig in Weinregionen in Portugal, Spanien und der Schweiz und testet sich durch die Fässer. „Im Herbst zum Beispiel waren wir in der Bekaa-Ebene im Libanon“, erzählt Nyfeler. Mit einigen Weingütern arbeitet die Destillerie bereits seit vielen Jahren zusammen.
