In the Ellington Hotel in Berlin, one can not only feel comfortable, but also take a journey through time – the building was constructed throughout the 1920s and 1930s. And still today, one can find traces of those decades all around it. A focus on jazz and a varied selection of arrangements and packages on offer, make the hotel an exceptional place to stay.
Im Ellington Hotel in Berlin kann man sich nicht nur rundum wohlfühlen, sondern auch eine kleine Zeitreise unternehmen – das Gebäude stammt aus den 1920er/1930er Jahren. Noch heute finden sich Spuren in diese Jahrzehnte. Ein Fokus auf Jazz und wechselnde Arrangements runden das außergewöhnliche Profil des Hotels ab.
“The entrance of the hotel already shows traces of the golden era of the ‘20s,”Astrid Prüger, PR and marketing manager of the hotel, says. Guests pass through brass-adorned double doors and arrive into the lobby which is still preserved in its original state. Inside the Ellington Hotel, one can also find a hall with wood panelling, where, in former days, the financial senators held their meetings. In the cellar, behind heavy doors made of steel, there was the strongroom – nowadays, the hotel stores its wine selection there.
„Schon die Eingangssituation lässt die Goldenen Zwanziger erkennen“, sagt Astrid Prüger, PR und Marketing Managerin des Hotels. Durch Messing-Flügeltüren gelangen die Gäste in den Vorraum, der noch original erhalten ist. Zudem findet sich im Hotel ein holzvertäfelter Saal, in dem früher die Finanzsenatoren ihre Sitzungen abhielten. Im Keller, ausgestattet mit tonnenschweren Stahltüren, befand sich früher der Tresorraum – heute lagert dort das vielfältige Weinsortiment des Hotels.
Jazz has always played a role for the hotel building: In the years after World War II, the famous Berlin jazz club ‘Badewanne’ (bathtub), where stars like Louis Armstrong performed, was located there. Besides this, the hotel is also named after the influential jazz musician Duke Ellington: the Ellington Hotel with its restaurant Duke. Still today, jazz concerts take place regularly at the hotel, and the JazzRadio 106.8 station has a studio in the hotel’s Duke Lounge. Many special arrangements are offered: watching a film in the Astor film lounge combined with a dinner; an overnight stay with a visit to the Las Vegas live show Stars in Concert, or ‘Time for Two’ for couples. So much is possible - and there is always a little bit of that throwback feeling to the roaring ‘20s to be enjoyed too. 70 | Issue 64 | July 2018
