On July 16, 1790, the Resident’s Act was signed into law by President George Washington to provide for a permanent seat of government that would include the Capitol and other buildings necessary for the newly formed country. From humble beginnings, the Capitol stands today in tribute to the People and the legacy that we all share as American ci zens. The Capitol building and grounds are constantly evolving. This year is the 200th Anniversary of Frederick Law Olmsted (1822 - 1903), Father of American Landscape and designer of the . Capitol grounds. It’s a natural se ng for relaxa on, re ec on & comfort. His “Summer House,” dated to 1881 on the northwest front o ers shade, sea ng, and a fountain. A similar structure for the southeast front was not approved by Congress
Did You Know: A maze of tunnels, a crypt, 2 movie theaters, and a monorail lie underground on Capitol Hill. Digging began in 1865 with tunnels that connected to towers above ground that ven lated Chambers. Today, the Library uses pneuma c underground tubes to deliver orders rst installed in 1897.
