LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Warmer weather is here, and I welcome it with open arms! Although we did have some fun this past winter season, it always feels good to get out of the house and into a park without all the layers. There’s an eagerness buzzing around our city this spring and summer as we welcome in some really big initiatives.

The giraffes at Potawatomi Zoo have finally arrived and we couldn’t be more excited.

They’re the talk of the town and for good reason! These stunning creatures are one of the many great opportunities within our incredible zoo, with additional projects coming up! To read more about the giraffes and their arrivals, check out page 12.

This year is also a big one for one of the historic venues in our city. The Morris Performing Arts Center turns 100 years old and we’re embracing this milestone in a big way. The architecture alone could speak to its exquisite and unique history. There are so many incredible talents that have stood on the Morris stage, and we can’t wait to usher in another 100 years with the grandeur it deserves. Learn more about the years’ celebrations on page 4.

We’ve also got a lot going on in our green spaces, with three free concert series to art fairs and Boomer making its way to a park near you! There’s so much going on, we’ve narrowed it down to a Hot List for you. Take a look on page 18 and get ready to mark your calendar!

AS I THINK BACK ABOUT MY EXPERIENCES WITH THE MORRIS THEATER,

I realize that it was not until after the birth of my first grandchild that I really began attending functions and events. I’ve lived all my adult life in South Bend, and so I knew about the Morris Theater and the opportunities to attend different types of shows, but going to shows was just not part of my lifestyle at the time. The reason could partly be because I grew up in a family of twelve siblings and going to the theater was a luxury that was not afforded to me as a child. I cannot recall when the arts and the shows at the Morris were ever offered to me.

After my granddaughter Jasmine was born, my priorities shifted to making sure that I was able to spend time with her. As she grew older and started becoming familiar with popular children’s television shows and books, we would notice those same shows offered at the Morris. Those were the times that I would read the marquee when I drove past the Morris, so excited to share what new children’s shows were coming with Jasmine. The first show we saw was Sesame Street Live when she was three years old. She absolutely loved the character Elmo, and the look on her face when he came on stage was priceless. I lived for those moments when she would light up and sing along with the various characters on stage.

It was then that I would look ahead at the upcoming shows and buy tickets in advance to make sure Jasmine was able to enjoy her favorite shows like Blues Clues, Dora Live, and Sesame Street every year.

When my second grandchild was born, we were experts at planning out which shows we would attend, and we found ourselves in regular attendance of the shows my grandchildren enjoyed.

The impact of those shows upon my grandchildren was an extremely positive one. They had an appreciation for the arts and were able to understand the world of live performances.

Theatrical performances were particularly Jasmine’s favorite hobby. She would act out shows and sing all the time. As she became school age, she got involved in theater and performed on stage both in middle and high school. Jasmine is now twenty years old and is still performing in Improv at the college level as a club activity.

Jasmine’s love of theater has broadened our entire family’s knowledge of shows and classic theatrical performances. We have seen several Broadway shows at the Morris, including Wicked and Les Miserable. I feel that the Morris was a huge influence on introducing our entire family to world of live performance, and for that we will be forever grateful for having a theater in our city like the Morris.

The alarm clock sounds, and many are off to work with the sun having already risen. But just before dawn when the sky is still dark and the streets are quiet, there’s work already being done: sidewalks are being swept, the stage is being set and the hum of a mower can be heard in the distance, cutting fairways to perfection.

It may sound simple, but these behind-the-scenes jobs are critical to keeping our places and spaces looking beautiful and operating smoothly. They fly under the radar acting as the front lines of our courses, parks and venues. I sat down with a few of our own as they continue to create a sense of beauty day in and day out.

SEYHAN KILIC

EVENT TECHNICIAN, THE MORRIS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

When I arrive at the Morris Performing Arts Center on a Tuesday morning, there’s a semi just outside the front under the marquee, unloading road cases of merchandise for a two-night run of the popular kids show: Trolls Live! In a few short hours, the sidewalks will fill with eager kids, ready to make their first memories at the theater.

“Sorry it’s a little crazy back here,” Kilic said, in her cool, calm, and collected demeanor. Show day or not, she exudes zero signs of stress. Answering three phone calls in the first few minutes, I can barely keep up with her as she power-walks through many corridors I didn’t know existed deep beneath the Morris main floor.

Over the years, The Morris has seen a variety of shows on its historic stage from comedic stars to music legends, with sell out crowds (2,564 to be exact) and worldwide recognition in Pollstar Magazine. I’ve been in one of those seats and can speak to the magical space the Morris can be on a show night.

We finally make our way to her office, a shared space suspended above the backstage dock area overlooking the controlled chaos. Kilic is one of three full-timers that work behind-the-scenes, all having important roles in the care and maintenance of the building.

As I make my way backstage to meet with SEYHAN KILIC, Event Technician for the Morris, I feel out of place and quite frankly, in the way. The rush of a load-in is seen beyond the stage curtain and it’s almost as if the first act of a show has already begun. There’s a seamless dance the stagehands routinely execute as they maneuver around in their unofficial uniform - a sea of black.

Celebrating its 100th birthday this year, the Morris Performing Arts Center has seen its fair share of struggles with deteriorating infrastructure, most of which are typical with a 100-year old building. It’s soon to see upgrades with the Morris 100 Capital Campaign raising over $30M for upgrades and additions. Nonetheless Kilic wears many hats, as technical point-of-contact on a show day to tending to the underground sewage pipes during

a backup. There isn’t a thing Kilic wouldn’t do to keep the Morris looking its best.

“There’s always something to be done, especially on a nonshow day,” Kilic said. “It’s an old building, so there’s always something we need to stay on top of. I don’t mind any of it, it keeps the job interesting.”

Beyond the confines of the main level is a lower basement that I could easily get lost in. It winds around with white cement block hallways and various unmarked doors, each having an important purpose to the functionality of the theater. “There’s a lot of dirty jobs…but this can get pretty bad.”

She’s referring to the water pipes and sewage pumps that wind their way in a small, dark room. Despite describing the overflows that can occur, and having to clean, sanitize and bleach mop the floor, she doesn’t flinch. “It’s not too bad,” she said, smiling.

It takes a passionate person to take on these kinds of jobs. After spending 30 years in community theater, Kilic found her home at the Morris and never looked back.

“IT WAS COMPLETE FATE AND I’VE LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF BEING HERE. IT’S LITERALLY MY DREAM JOB.”

DARRELL PARGO GROUP LEADER, HOWARD PARK

If you’ve spent any time in Howard Park, it’s quite possible you’ve seen DARRELL PARGO zip around in the Toolcat collecting trash and picking up debris among the large open green space on a summer day.

The Group Leader at Howard has the daily, grueling task of maintaining the 13-acres of public greenspace at the most highly trafficked park in South Bend.

“MY GOAL IS TO MAKE EVERY DAY LOOK LIKE A GRAND OPENING, SO PEOPLE CONTINUE TO COME AROUND AND FEEL INVITED. EVERYONE SHOULD FEEL IMPORTANT WHEN THEY COME HERE, BECAUSE EVERYONE IS IMPORTANT” Pargo said.

I’ve known Darrell for many years, first when he was with Downtown South Bend, Inc. before taking on the lead at Howard Park. Regardless of how long you’ve known him, it’s easy to feel his passion for the community. He’s one of the most humble people you’ll ever meet, never once complaining about the job at hand.

He takes great pride in his work and when complimented, shies away from taking on the credit himself.

On any given day, the park can see upwards of thousands of visitors enjoying a special event, the four-season playground, a fitness class on the event lawn or a quick jog through the park. The influx of visitors in the season can create quite the dirty job for Pargo.

“Without a team, we have nothing and I’m proud of our team…it keeps me coming back every single day. All of us are working for one common cause – and that’s to make the community happy and safe and that is what makes the difference,” he said.

The next time I see him, he’s stopped saying a polite hello to a couple walking through the park. His smile is genuine and contagious and it’s people like this that make our parks special places to visit.

“I’ve seen a lot at this park. Sometimes there are homeless taking refuge, sometimes there’s a situation where someone tries to do destroy what we have going on here,” he said. “But sometimes the job gets so good that someone has to tell me to take my lunch break.

I have a passion for cleanliness and making this place the best that it can be.”

“I love the public. I love being in it. I love breathing this natural fresh air and seeing people here. It’s all right here.”

ADAM OLTMAN

SUPERINTENDENT, ERSKINE & STUDEBAKER PARK GOLF COURSES

Just before the warm air fills the senses of golfers around the city, urging them to tee up for the first time in months, the greens are recovering from another brisk South Bend winter. There’s a team of two full-time staff managing 6,100 yards of green space within the course, year-round.

The sun has already begun to rise and the final layer of snow has (finally) just melted on the course when I meet with ADAM OLTMAN, Superintendent of Erskine and Studebaker Park Golf Courses. His office is housed in the Maintenance building just behind the 5th hole and is what I’d imagined. A faint smell of gasoline and grass lingers as I enter the space, various machines are lined up and ready

to work. Oil stains the floor and tools line a full wall of the mechanics area, a mower on the lift ready for a tune-up.

During the winter season, Oltman has been assisting in mechanic duties of each machine and tractor used through the golf season. He and the mechanic work to get everything tuned up, pressure washed, and ready.

But once that snow melts, Oltman is eager to care for his pristine greens. He has overseen them since 2014, year after year seeing the fruits of his labor continue to thrive and blossom into talked-about fairways.

Gearing up for a busy spring and summer, quite possibly busier than the record-breaking 2021 season at Erskine, Oltman’s routine is less than typical. Grasses are cut, fertilizers are laid, and hole locations are moved.

There’s something new to do every day, and it’s one of the many reasons why Oltman loves the job.

“In the spring, there’s a lot of blowing and raking sticks and whatever came down in the winter to clean up. It can get dirty with the wet leaves. We’re up before daybreak around 5, jump on the mower and change the flags before anyone beats us out here,” he said.

I may not be privy to the needs of course maintenance, but I do know creating greens to be that perfect shade of green and length require a keen understanding. Oltman started in the industry doing part-time work and self-taught his way to Superintendent.

“It’s always different every day,” he said. “What we do here, they may do different at another course.”

One may think golf courses are known for their commitment to tradesecrets, but I learn it’s quite the opposite.

“Regardless of the course we work for, I’ll call them up and talk about fertilizers or ask for other tips,” he said. “We’ve let others borrow equipment when theirs has gone down. We’re like a big family.

In addition to his duties at Erskine, Oltman also cares for the historic 9-hole Studebaker Golf Course, a community course known for its program with The First Tee. The golf courses have all seen an uptick in visitors, with a record-breaking 2021 season. There may not be one contributing factor the success of the courses, but it’s safe to say the love they receive is most certainly far above par for the course.

by JE SSI CA SPOOR As I walk into the zoo’s side entrance I feel like a VIP, not a soul around. The popular destination is just shy of opening for their season and it’s almost as if I’m in a different time zone. The usual suspects of noise and disorder are all void of sight and the only sound I hear is coming from the welder just outside the giraffe quarters.

They’re putting the finishing touches on what will be the platform to feed the newest stars of the zoo.

The four stunning Masai giraffes, ranging from 15 to 17 feet tall, can be seen through their barn enclosure looking skeptical as I walk in with Potawatomi Zoo’s Executive Director, Josh Sisk. Their stature is purely breathtaking when seen from a short distance – they tower with elegance, moving in near silence. The four males (known as Seymour, Maximus, Wyatt and Kellan) and their arrival to the zoo is the first of many new additions to make waves.

Their new home, the Laidig Giraffe Conservation Center, is a stunning new $2.6M facility, hosting expansive indoor quarters for the giraffes, additional quarters for (what will be) the ostriches and a small event space in the front. It’s tastefully modern, matching the look and feel of the brand-new front entrance.

It’s been a dream in the making for Sisk.

When we sit down to talk, it’s in their brand-new office space housed in the renovated red barn. Formerly a house for livestock, the barn has seen a complete transformation just as many other areas of the zoo have in recent times. Before we even begin, I can tell his excitement for the job is contagious – and his knowledge of the industry is far more than one would imagine.

Rightfully so. Sisk spent over 12 years in the LA Zoo as a Giraffe Keeper and Mammal Curator and from there, a stint at the world-renowned Bronx Zoo. “He’s not above any job. If there’s a job that needs to be done, you’ll find him doing it,” said Marketing Manager Kristina Barroso Burrell. “He mows, he cleans up trash, he leaf blows…”

“The leaf blower is my therapy,” he interrupted with a laugh. “It all adds up and is something that’s instilled in me. IT ALL MATTERS.” On any given day, you’ll find Sisk helping at animal care, designing a new exhibit, creating a presentation for a board meeting, or stopping by the local hardware store picking up supplies for his next project. It’s that servant leadership mixed with a greater vision that has seen successes year after year. The introduction of the giraffes is yet another example of the big vision.

Masked up and more eager than my three-year-old, I’m coached to move slowly as the keepers take lead on encouraging the stunning animals forward with fresh lettuce leaves. The enclosure is warm, and I can only imagine how refreshing the warm sun feels after acclimating in their new quarters this past winter.

That acclimation period was an extremely important time for keepers to earn their trust. Visitors have been few and far between since their arrival, and they aren’t convinced I’m any different today.

It’s not every day giraffes are being transported across the Midwest. In fact, there are only two haulers in the country who can accommodate the journey with a modified horse trailer. It took four trips from Florida and Greenville, South Carolina – the locations of the AZAaccredited zoos where these four giraffes originate from.

The Masai Giraffes who are native to East Africa, are also considered endangered, which is why this is an important process for Potawatomi Zoo. South Bend is the only zoo to have the Masai Giraffe in the tri-state area and taking on more is in the works for the future.

“Through AZA-accredited zoos, we don’t buy and sell animals,” said Sisk. “It’s all about sustainability. There are population biologists with massive databases – almost like a dating app – that tell us bloodlines and lineages…

the most successful campaign the Zoo has ever seen with the majority funded by private donors, but it began with Sisk’s imagination for what could be and someone to align with his vision.

“I was standing in the African Savannah area with the Laidig family and laid out my dream for it someday. He turned to me and asked, ‘How much would you need to get started?’ I jokingly answered with 1.5 million,” he says, getting emotional.

“Right there, standing at the fence he goes ‘Ok. I think we can do that.’ I remember my stomach sinking thinking, are you serious?”

Turns out, he was very serious.

From that moment on, Sisk sat down with architects to begin designing his dream from scratch. To see it come to fruition over the last two years has become an incredible journey for Sisk and his team. But at the end of the day, it’s not just about the giraffes.

“We’re reshaping this core part of the zoo to bring in animals that people love,” said Sisk. “…it’s putting in these state-of-the-art facilities and bringing an immersive experience to the community.”

it was important [for us] to take on the males, because it allows other zoos to have space to continue to breed and grow the species.”

As I stand and gaze at the tall mammals, I’m eager to have the opportunity to see behind-the scenes of such intriguing creatures for the first time.

It’s one of the many things Sisk is intentional about doing, setting himself apart from the typical zoo director role.

He’s been unafraid of taking the public on a behind-thescenes tour on the morning news or sharing how the keepers care for animals during a Facebook Live session.

“We’re finding the more we provide that access to people – like how the animals are cared for - and being an open book about it, the more support we get from the community,” he said. “At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.”

That open book mentality is due in part to the overwhelming passion for the industry, which is evident from the moment you meet him. Sisk isn’t here for a business-as-usual experience. He’s been shaking up the zoo’s excitement factor since his 2019 appointment.

Most recently stirring eager zoo goers with the “Big and Loud” campaign, one that will see additions of new species and development of additional habitats to the tune of $6.2M – the largest investment to date. It’s been

As the zoo continues to grow and thrive in our community, it’s no surprise that equity is front-of-mind. The industry nationwide has a history of not being as diverse as it could be, but here at home Sisk and his team are intentional about tackling the disparity through new partnerships, discounts, and unique opportunities for kids.

“We’re working on fostering the connection with wildlife and those who may not otherwise be exposed to it,” he said. “It’s getting animals in the hands of kids and letting them experience it at a young age. Getting those kids who may not have thought about a career in zookeeping to think about it is something we’re always working on.”

With the zoo continuing to undergo additional exhibit changes and welcoming new animals within the next few years, their ultimate goal is to remain a community zoo.

As I walk back to the main gates after our quick behindthe-scenes encounter, I am at awe at what this community zoo continues to do for our city. It’s the passion and commitment from Sisk and the zoo staff who are working tirelessly day and night that make it something special.

Studebaker Golf Course is known for its unintimidating, inclusive environment with a modest clubhouse and ready-to-play, no-nonsense greens. The course experience certainly doesn’t lack in quality, which is why generations have grown up playing the course after school, learning the ins and outs of the water hazards and tree-lined fairways. It has welcomed old friends for a quick 9-hole reunion and been the site of a youngsters very first drive.

It’s quite literally a hidden gem in the heart of the south side, nestled between residential streets and Riley High School’s campus. But what many may not see is the incredibly positive impact the course is making on the youth in our community.

The 100-year-old course has been the home of junior golf, a program that has seen five decades of youth grow and mature from the skills they’ve developed through play at Studebaker. It has most recently become home of The First Tee, a national organization promising to deliver a positive impact in the lives of youth through the sport of golf. Jenny Zimmerman, Executive Director of the First TeeMichiana has seen its impact with her own eyes: “Throughout our community (and beyond), there are hundreds of successful adults—in dozens of career fields—that learned some of the skills vital to their success by rounding the fairways of Studebaker Golf Course during the summer.

I have met many of them, and nearly all attribute important parts of their growth and maturity—as well as some of their lifelong friends—to their time at Studebaker.”

Housed within Studebaker Golf Course, The First Tee-Michiana is taking on that tradition and developing new strategies to introduce the game to a new generation.

Over the last few years since its chapter began locally, the program has seen incredible gains in enrollment and participation. The John & Kathy Postle Center, a newly developed addition to the Studebaker clubhouse that offers a simulator, classroom space and areas for continued learning regardless of the season. According to Zimmerman the center has been a blessing to the community.

“Having a welcoming ‘home’ they can call their own and where First Tee coaches give the kids the opportunity to exercise their own autonomy within the values we learn at First Tee, has been a delight.”

The First Tee may be a national brand, but Zimmerman has a heart for seeing youth in our community thrive in new ways from playing such an inclusive sport.

“There’s a “sweet spot” – the sport is available to all body shapes and sizes, athletic abilities and is selfpaced for development. Values like sportsmanship, respect, honesty, and perseverance are all seen under this inclusive model.”

It takes one step inside to see why the center has become a staple in the community. Kids can be seen from all walks of life taking on the challenge of the game with patience and grace. A highfive and pat on the back is welcomed and the encouragement between these young people will certainly benefit our future generations to come.
