ON THE COVER ISSUE 6 Participants kayak down the St. Joseph River as part of the Paddle for Pints during Best. Week. Ever. Nearly 100 people took part in the new event, enjoying a fun and memorable afternoon of paddling down the serene river.

The St. Joseph River is the heart of South Bend, offering dynamic fishery and hosting the first artificial whitewater course in North America at the East Race Waterway. The banks of the St. Joseph River offer miles of paved and lighted walking and running for everyone to get out and enjoy.

Changing over to a new season always turns my eyes toward nature and the ways we interact with it. The spring and summer season invite us to get out and explore everything nature has to offer in South Bend. Did you know there’s a park 10 minutes from every resident in our city? Many have been the recipient of upgrades with new playground equipment! Learn more about what parks have been upgraded on page 31.

This spring/summer issue serves as a reminder to get out and be more intentional about being together. Being intentional about spending time with friends and family is important to our overall health. Head to an outdoor concert, play a game… whatever the case may be, put the phone down, get outside and take an adventure together! Need ideas on where to go? We’ll tell you more about our favorite places and hidden gems throughout the city on page 20.

18 parks just received an upgrade as part of My South Bend Parks & Trails to include new irrigated soccer fields, basketball courts, restrooms, splashpads and playgrounds.

3 | If you normally walk your neighborhood… try the downtown trail loop. Once construction is complete later this summer, the trail system can be followed from the east side of the river across the pedestrian bridge south of Howard Park, and all along the western edge of the river to Leeper Park.

4 | If you normally seek a thrill on the weekends... try the East Race Waterway. The East Race Waterway was the first of its kind, a white water rafting experience that provides all kind of thrills in downtown South Bend. Get your adrenaline pumping!

5 | If you normally travel to a waterpark every summer... try our local Kennedy Water Playground or Potawatomi Pool.

Both locations offer an affordable water experience to help cool off in the summer heat. There are also splashpads at eight different parks in areas throughout the city.

6 | If you normally watch fireworks on the Fourth of July… consider going to First Fridays during Best. Week. Ever. to see fireworks off of the Jefferson Bridge. Arguably the best fireworks show in South Bend all year, First Fridays will close down the Colfax Bridge for viewing the show right over the St. Joseph River at dusk on Friday, June 5.

7 | If you normally visit the South Bend Farmer’s Market... see if your neighborhood has a community garden. Unity Gardens has over 55 small neighborhood gardens throughout South Bend which provide community access to homegrown food and a way to connect to your neighbors.

8 | If you normally tailgate every home game... head out to one of the Boomin’ In the Parks events coming to a neighborhood park near you. eSPORTS SECOND ACT: REVIVING THE BENDIX THEATER

eSports.

It’s a new yet explosively popular phenomenon around the world. In fact, it’s so incredibly popular that the best of the best have earned seven-figures and brand endorsements. But what exactly is it? eSports is a world in which video gaming is organized in various leagues. Teams face off in video games that many may have heard of including Fortnite, Madden NFL, and Call of Duty. There’s even an entire network followed by millions of people on YouTube, dedicated to showing gamers play in real-time. It seems as if video games have exploded in popularity, but it’s not a new concept.

Video games have been around since the ‘70s, with many playing the likes of Pong, Mario and Crash Bandicoot. The earliest known gaming tournament was held in 1972 at Stanford University, featuring allamateur players vying for the top stop playing the game Spacewar. The grand prize winner received a year’s subscription to Rolling Stone. By the 2010s, these professional gaming competitions continued to boom in popularity.

John Anthony, President of St. Joseph County Hotel Motel Tax Board, knew the industry could take hold in South Bend if there was a dedicated place to host it. Not only would it allow the city to stay relevant, but it would help the underutilized Bendix Theater see a new future.

Approved for $2 million, the Bendix Theater has begun to take on a new look and feel including the addition of monitors, video boards, and new seating.

It will also include dedicated team rooms, separate production facilities, and all-day gaming for local amateur players.

“We still plan on being able to use the space for all the other groups that currently call the Bendix home,” said Jacob Hamman, Director of Sales & Marketing at the Century Center. “We have sporting events, theater, comedy, breakout sessions, meetings, and community forums just to name a few. We are excited about all the possibilities that [the new Bendix Theatre improvements] create.”

More than 50 colleges have varsity eSports programs.

The National Association of Collegiate eSports provides thousands in scholarships to winners each year. Locally, Bethel University recently announced the implementation of their own eSports team, complimenting the Bendix Theatre renovations. They’ll be launching in the fall of 2020 with regular practice times and competitions. Local high schools including John Adams High School already have existing eSports teams competing for scholarship dollars.

“We anticipate holding two or three national level events in the first year after renovations are complete, along with local or regional events every month,” says Nick Kevla, Sports Market Development Manager at Visit South Bend.

South Bend is about to get a piece of the growing $1.2 billion industry. According to what is seemingly an erupting cultural movement, eSports will continue to grow with players and audiences alike. CNN estimates that by 2021, the audience rate will grow to 557 million viewers.

What may seem like yet another construction project in South Bend will truly be an asset to the community. With a globally and culturally growing interest, it’s bound to put us on the map.

The design of a playground isn’t just about the addition of new swings and play towers. Although those amenities are always exciting to see, there are many additional factors that play a role in designing a park.

At Venues Parks & Arts, we try to be intentional with how we design public spaces to fit the needs of the community that uses them most. The My South Bend Parks & Trails initiative began by taking a deep dive into important questions like: How do residents use their local park? Are they easy to get to? Where do gaps exist in our community?

In many instances for residents around the city, the common thread wasn’t well-manicured shrubs or a fancy playground. After receiving data through surveys, community meetings, online forms and thousands of pieces of feedback, it was obvious that residents simply wanted a safe space for neighbors to come together.

That concept rings especially true in the newly renovated Pulaski Park, which has seen transitions throughout the years.

When beginning the conceptual designs of the new Pulaski Park, it was evident the community had deep ties to its space. Both community meetings were well attended with neighborhood residents. It was overwhelmingly obvious the importance this park not only played in the surrounding neighborhoods, but the opportunity it provided to its kids as a safe zone.

Over the years, Pulaski Park has grown into a highly active soccer league, playing every Friday evening with its number of members growing each season. It went from simple youth leagues and casual pick-up play to a legitimate adult league, many of which have played since they could walk. The park and the soccer league had become such a neighborhood staple, special considerations were made during the design process.

Oscar Marin has been playing soccer at Pulaski for over 17 years with his entire family. The new park includes irrigated soccer fields and the addition of ADA accessible restrooms. A new plaza and pavilion will support the activities that take place throughout each season including the soccer leagues and summer lunch programs. The new park will include

features like new play elements and a splash pad, better facilitating parents multi-tasking, like watching soccer games and their younger kids play at the same time.

Troyer Group Landscape Architect, Jonathon Geels, who designed Pulaski Park explains, “The park has long been identified as the center of the community.

Our process focused on strengthening the capacity of the community, the things that were already going well and the elements that would improve that experience.”

Plans for additional soccer leagues to play at Pulaski are already in place. “Liga Latina de Futbol,” a league that once played at Pulaski many years ago, will be returning. When the park is back up-and-running this spring, it’s anticipated to be busier than ever.

Pulaski Park reopens with a grand opening celebration on April 29 from 4:00pm – 8:00pm.

THE CORE VALUE OF MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL IS COMMUNITY

and the South Bend Cubs are working harder than ever to be sure the community is stronger and more inclusive. As one of the most beloved and well-attended experiences in the area, inclusivity is more important than ever before.

As part of Minor League Baseball’s Copa de la Diversión initiative, the South Bend Cubs join 91 other teams as they become Los Cabritos Maldichos for five games this 2020 season. The partnership with Minor League Baseball provides a new experience while diversifying the game of baseball.

“The goal of the series is to expand our community reach and engage the Latino community,” said Joe Hart, President of the South Bend Cubs. “…we will be doing more to incorporate the Latino community. We will be adding new food items and have mariachi bands…These are days to celebrate the Latino community.”

The South Bend Cubs have several community programs and events happening all year long that diversify their offerings and provide opportunities for the community to be involved. From Reading Club to fundraisers benefiting local non-profits, they are committed to being positive neighborhood stewards.

Not only is the club winning in their community efforts, they’re also winning awards season-after-season. In 2015, the South Bend Cubs received Minor League Baseball’s highest honor: The John H. Johnson President’s Award. It recognizes areas of financial stability and contributions to the baseball industry, the first in Indiana to win since 1988. Last year they won the hard-fought battle of the Midwest League Championship. “…It’s been exciting to see that when you give something good to support and celebrate, they come out and support you,” said Hart.

The team has captured some major talent on their roster, making the experience even more exciting each season. They’ve seen former players move to the Major Leagues, and Major Leaguers debut during a short injury rehab.

“When you’re 100 miles away from your major league affiliate, it’s pretty exciting because [the Cubs] are a national, world-wide brand,” said Hart. “It just created a whole new excitement and support from the community.”

Conserving OUR LEGACY

Parks provide fundamentally important environmental, aesthetic and recreational benefits to a city. They are the source of economic upswings, increased property values and most importantly, provide accessibility to wellness.

Parks are also critical in sustainability and conservation efforts.

In recent years, conservation has become more than a buzzword. Armed with better scientific studies and seeing first-hand the impact we have on our environment, parks around the nation have taken a lead in supporting the conservation and stewardship of land and resources.

Recognizing its own place in maintaining sustainability, Venues Parks & Arts (VPA) formed the Ecological Advocacy Committee (EAC) in 2016. The committee serves with the goal of advising on matters that enhance the quality of life for the environment and the citizens of South Bend. With over 50 parks in the VPA family, there’s a constant need to reevaluate how we’re protecting the natural environment.

“Our [EAC] recommendations have resulted in changes to some of the landscaping plants chosen for Leeper Park, designs for Pinhook Park and created a partnership between South Bend and Notre Dame to study the feasibility of creating a new park,” said Steve Sass, EAC Chair and parks advocate.

The everyday stressors of managing people, kids, time…it can leave us stressed at the end of the day. There are moments where it’s nice to sit down and binge watch our newest television obsessions, but it does a body – and mind – good to get outside and breathe fresh air. We’ve prepared this guide to get you up and out to your local park.

Play THERE’S AN INNER CHILD IN ALL OF US Not much of the hiking type, but fancy some fresh air? Gear up the kids and head to these local parks which offer enhanced playgrounds, athletic courts and pavilions, perfect for an old-school picnic.

BOEHM PARK This underestimated park is full of fun surprises. Not only does it boast a brand-new ADA accessible playground, it has a wide variety of athletic courts. Basketball goals, tennis courts, baseball field and picnic tables are just the start of this 30-acre park.

POTAWATOMI PARK One of South Bend’s most active parks, Potawatomi Park’s tree shaded acres give way to a variety of play options. A warm summer day calls for a refreshing dip in the Potawatomi Pool, or jump around the splash pad within the park. Potawatomi Zoo, Indiana’s oldest, calls the park home as well.

PHIL ST. CLAIR PARK Best known for its Byers Softball Complex which hosts national tournaments every year, this park has a large playground and open tennis courts for play. Located on the city’s southwest side, Phil St. Clair park has over 43 acres of open land for play.

WALK BREATHE IN THAT FRESH SUMMER AIR There’s a reason why doctors all over the world recommend getting out of the house and taking a walk. Not only will you subtly burn calories, the movement has an incredible amount of health benefits. Any of these parks offer trails to get your heart pumping in a beautiful display of nature.

EAST BANK TRAIL The East Bank Trail is a 3.5-mile paved stretch of beauty. Nestled next to the St. Joseph River, this trail starts on Angela Boulevard near the University of Notre Dame and stretches through downtown South Bend. The trail extends through downtown to Mishawaka and is the perfect opportunity to bike, walk or jog. Pick a summer evening and enjoy the sun setting along the river.

ELBEL GOLF COURSE It’s not just for golf. Home to unique animals and wildlife, this oasis is a natural wetland home to Mud Lake. Sandhill cranes are seen often sauntering around the greens and turtles are typically seen meandering around the water. Rich with native and endangered species and over 500 different kinds of plants, this is the perfect place to bring the family for a hike.

RUM VILLAGE As one of the biggest parks in the city with just over 160 acres of rolling woodlands, Rum Village is a beautiful sanctuary home to some of the most stunning scenery and animals. Within it hosts three miles of trails which wind through this habitat.

RELAX TAKE A BREAK FROM THE HUSTLE OF LIFE Just because you want to relax doesn’t mean you have to spend a day at the spa. Bring a book, a podcast or the dog!

These locations are perfect havens from the busyness of life. Featuring nature at its finest, you’ll forget that you are in South Bend!

LEEPER In the heart of downtown is a quaint park tucked away with bountiful history. Meander through the well-kept Rose Garden or have a seat in front of the historic Studebaker Fountain. Walkways will wind you around the park with overlooks into the river and into the lavender labyrinth.

RAVINA This small neighborhood park boasts beautiful new walkway paths that lead down to Bowman Creek. Have a seat on one of the benches and let the tranquil flow of water take you away. Sneak a peak at the wildlife which call the creek banks home.

PINHOOK What once was a bend in the river long ago, Pinhook Lagoon now forms a scenic background for anyone looking to relax within nature. The park protects valuable wetland habitats and animals including deer and waterfowl are frequently spotted. Pardon the construction! New upgrades are underway this summer.

THREE YEARS AGO, WHEN BEST. WEEK. EVER. WAS A VAGUE, HIGH-LEVEL CONCEPT, MY FIRST REACTIONS WERE – WHAT IS IT? HOW WILL WE PULL IT OFF? WHY WILL PEOPLE CARE? Fast forward to today when we are about to enter our fourth year, I look back on the infancy of such a large-scale event and the deep impact it continues to make, year-after-year, in our community. Each year has seen more than 50,000 people in attendance who have experienced a myriad of events throughout the city. Swing through the trees at Edge Adventure? Check. Play board games in the middle of the street? Yahtzee! Climb in a firetruck? Sure did.

But why is a city-wide even like this important to have?

The second year, I remember standing on the blacktop parking lot at Walker Field in what felt like 117-degree heat posing this exact question. The week was long, and we were closing in on the last day. I was directing pedestrians on where to go within the park after parking their cars, since it was such a large campus. A man and his son approached me. They looked slightly lost or perhaps confused, but it was to be expected with the crowds that day.

He said, “This is the best week ever thing, right?” I nod.

He smiled. “I just wanted to tell you this.”

He began to explain that he and his son had never been to this park and many of the other locations Best. Week. Ever. had highlighted throughout the week. They had just moved to the area and his son was struggling to adjust his new home. He said this brought a smile back to his son’s face, and he felt excited about the potential that South Bend could have.

Did the week change his life? No. Did it open their eyes to everything our city has to offer? Absolutely. And that is what it’s all about. My passion for this event rests on the goal of Venues Parks & Arts: Connecting residents to emotionally engaging experiences and to one another, making incredible memories in South Bend.

This year will be no different. We’ll be bringing new and exciting experiences to the week for all to enjoy. Release your inner child and head down a slip-n-slide in the middle of the park or try that new restaurant down the street.

You don’t have to be a certain age to enjoy the zoo.

In fact, the Potawatomi Zoo is one of the most visited destinations in South Bend, welcoming over 200,000 visitors each season. Many flock to the Amur tigers to get a glimpse from the glass enclosure and others can’t wait to see the charming red pandas.

Both the Amur tigers and red pandas are part of a bigger initiative within zoos which have only in the last two decades, transformed the way humans experience animals. Zoos across the world have undergone a shift, becoming less of an “attraction” focus and more of an educational experience. No longer is it about elephant rides and pony tricks.

“We try to make it a learning experience,” said Kristina Barroso Burrell, Marketing & Communications Manager for the Potawatomi Zoo. “We want visitors to ask questions and learn. The more people care about the animals we have in the zoo, the more they will care about them in the wild too.”

The oldest zoo in Indiana, Potawatomi Zoo has more than 400 animals who call its 23 acres home. As part

of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the Potawatomi Zoo is part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP) Program. This program determines how to safely breed animals based on what is best for genetics and geographic diversity.

“Accredited zoos manage their animals through breeding programs called Species Survival Plans,” said Josh Sisk, Executive Director of Potawatomi Zoo. “We keep track of genetics and make breeding recommendations all in the name of sustaining the population for the future. If we have the choice between two different large cats, we do our best to choose the one that needs the most help.”

The SSP Program helps determine what animals the Potawatomi Zoo receives, based on many factors.

Everyone loves to experience new animals, but the biggest enjoyment is seeing a successful breeding program come to fruition.

“A baby anything is definitely the favorite animal of the zoo,” Burrell said, laughing. “Who doesn’t love to see a baby animal?”

“We love visiting in the summer,” said Nicole Gill, member of the Potawatomi Zoo. “It’s constantly improving, and the variety of animals always keeps my kids wanting to come back again…So much so they ask every morning at breakfast to see the tigers!”

The Potawatomi Zoo has undergone major capital improvements recently, ensuring the experience for the community is an unforgettable one year after year. As part of the Master Plan, construction on the new front entry, gift shop, and additional parking was just completed. The Red Barn project, which includes new classrooms and a learning zone, is slated to wrap up construction this summer.

“It’s about the experience that we can provide our visitors year after year,” said Burrell. “The Master Plan lays out some really cool initiatives, from a new educational classroom in the Red Barn to expanding the kind of animals we have in our zoo.”

There are many more developments in the coming year, including elements that would make the Potawatomi Zoo a regional draw for many.

The White Rhino (left) is the newest addition to the Potawatomi family, inviting a new kind of experience to zoo-goers. In addition, hours have been extended to 8:00pm in June, July & August, offering many families the opportunity to visit.

Meet Masamba The Potawatomi Zoo is happy to announce that a male southern white rhinoceros arrived at the Zoo at the beginning of October. He now has regular access to his new habitat between the okapi and Sichuan takin as well as his indoor space behind-the-scenes. He will be out in the public view as weather allows and as he chooses.

The three-year-old southern white rhino named Masamba (left) came from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. After he arrived, the Animal Care Staff took several days to help him acclimate to his new surroundings and routine before he was given access to his habitat. He will still move between the two spaces as he chooses to help him feel comfortable in his new home.

The My SB Parks & Trails initiative, a signature park and public spaces improvement program for the City of South Bend, has reached many notable milestones over the last two years. With nearly 80% completion, the city has only begun to see the benefits of such a historic overhaul.

The revamped Charles Black Center has seen a dramatic rise in attendance since its grand re-opening, both with visitors to the Center taking advantage of the increased programming and community groups using the facility to host events. Howard Park had record attendance numbers in its first season open. Underutilized neighborhood parks have seen modernized play equipment and ADA accessible restroom upgrades.

The historic Studebaker Fountain made its grand return to South Bend in the first phase of the Leeper Park improvement project. The new exercise equipment on the trail system, free and open to all users, will be getting its first real workout when the weather warms.

Soon to come is the overhaul of Pulaski Park on the west side, inviting neighbors to experience something completely new. Pinhook Park on the north side is targeted be finished this summer with upgrades to its facility and playground. Seitz Park, in partnership with the University of Notre Dame, will see a dramatic change as well.

Last year saw the completion of 18 neighborhood park renovations, which included playground equipment upgrades for a more fun and safer environment along with renovated bathrooms to meet ADA standards. Changes like this bring about a more inclusive atmosphere and a more livable and lovable South Bend for all.
