LETTER FROM THE

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Emerging from shutdowns but still struggling with a cycle of uncertainty, Venues Parks & Arts had a remarkable year filled with creative momentum, audacious initiatives and strong collaboration. I am extremely proud of our talented team who remain ever committed to creating exceptional spaces and delivering high-quality experiences. I’m also ever grateful for the generosity of our strong supporters and the contributions of our passionate partners. Our collective efforts are creating an undeniable impact in our community that will be felt for generations to come.

While not without ongoing challenges, this year we re-opened our temporarily shuttered venues. It was emotional to see people once again populating the Morris Performing Arts Center, Palais Royale and Century Center. Beyond opening the doors again, we unveiled some upgrades too, mostly notably the Bendix Esports Arena and Gaming Center – the first of its kind in the region. Meanwhile, our outdoor spaces remained as popular as ever. Neighbors and visitors continued to discover our overhauled parks and trail system, while we saw record breaking attendance from golf and rafting to swimming and ice skating.

This past fall we received recognition as a National Gold Medal Finalist from the American Academy of Parks & Recreation Administration – one of the highest honors an agency can receive in the country. Yes, this is partially a reflection of upon our noticeable enhancements, new amenities, and increased levels of care to our shared public spaces. More importantly, however, it’s an affirming acknowledgment of the way we’re conducting our efforts.

2021 was another year like no other. We improved, we called audibles, we learned and we laid plans. These include some bold new projects including the “Build the Dream” project to redevelop the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center and Seitz Park as well as the Morris Performing Arts Center 100Year Anniversary initiatives and campaign.

Thank you for celebrating with us and for continuing to support our mission to create a more livable and lovable South Bend for all.

Providing opportunities to all members of the community is a critical component for enhancing social sustainability within our community and a key goal for Venues Parks & Arts.

As part of the Morris 100-year celebration, a committee has assembled a 15-person subcommittee chaired by Dr. Marvin Curtis and Kareema Fowler to develop a comprehensive program for the next 100 years. The group hopes to raise a $2M endowment to ensure the program in perpetuity.

ECOLOGICAL STEWARDSHIP Holding ourselves accountable for ecological progress by implementing sustainable business practices, engaging in public ecological education & protecting our environment.

Our grounds crews worked tirelessly to improve the ecological health and beautify our city’s parks and public space through the following efforts: •

Removed invasive species throughout city parks including Knotweed, Amur Honeysuckle, and Eurasian Watermilfoil.

Installed 2,700 bulbs, flowers and plants around various parks and trails

•

Planted 233 trees in parks and downtown Smart Streets

•

Gave away 70 trees to the public

•

Transplanted 523 trees into the urban nurseries throughout the city

•

Transplanted 58 trees from Elbel nursery into our parks system

•

Pruned and provided beneficial healthcare to 1,386 park and city trees

•

Watered 6,487 trees in parks and the downtown area

•

Fertilized 519 downtown trees

•

Installed wire wraps to protect 59 trees from beaver damage

•

South Bend has 26% urban tree canopy coverage with an overall goal of reaching 40%

•

Planted 139 trees among tree lawns as part of the free “Community Tree Canopy” program

•

Performed yearly river window maintenance and brush clearing along Veterans Memorial, Riverside Drive and Governor Joe Kernan to provide pleasant vista views along 4.4 miles of riverbank

•

Continued the urban tree recycling program, recycling trees by selling logs to the local sawmills. This program reduces the total amount of woody materials going into our landfills

•

2,180 mowing abatements completed on vacant and abandoned lots for Code Enforcement

•

Mowed 4,335 properties for the City of South Bend and Department of Community Investment

•

Removed graffiti from 101 residential and commercial properties at no cost

•

Comprehensive Natural Resource Management Plan updated

Saved from the landfill by donating to Cultivate Food Rescue.

With the leadership of the Ecological Advocacy Committee, South Bend Common Council passed a progressive code removing invasive species of trees, which have out-competed the native species and disrupted the local ecosystem. This is the first of its kind in the nation.
