foreword KwaZulu Natal Department of Education

HOD: NSP Sishi Since 2009, our government has declared education as an apex priority. This suggests that the education of the young people of our country must take centre stage in all our endeavours in order to ensure a skilled and capable citizenry. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education is committed to ensuring that the education of our young people is relevant and responsive. In this regard, the Department continues to strive for improvement in the quality of offerings in order to meet the demands of the globalizing world we live in. There are many developments that the Department of Education has undertaken towards the attainment of this goal. To this extent, we have declared the classroom as the centre-piece of all the work we do.

to contribute to a diversified curriculum. In Grade 4-6, learners take six (6) subjects which provide grounding in the subject areas that are offered. The number of subjects that are offered in Grades 7-9 increases to nine (9) subjects. At Grade 10, our curriculum provides for learners to select and package their subjects in a manner that will contribute to their career aspirations. Every learner in Grade 9 is expected to know the subjects that are offered in Grades 1012. The combination of subjects at this level is important for ultimate career choices and opportunities. I would therefore like to encourage all learners in Grade 9 to use this resource to guide their decisions on subject combinations.

Our attention in the classroom is to consolidate our efforts in improving the quality of teaching and learning and thereby contribute to the improvement of learning outcomes.

Hence as part of the provincial curriculum management strategy, the Department has declared the month of August as a month for career information for Grade 9 learners.

The National Curriculum Statement (CAPS) taught in our schools is a world class, high skills curriculum that is targeted at making our learners competitive. The CAPS provides a curriculum that offers a wide range of subjects

During this period, each school that offers Grade 9 must convene a parents and learners information session in order that learners can make informed choices about their intended career paths.

foreword/continued

South Africa needs a workforce that responds to the needs of the economy and its social development. In order to attain this, learners who are motivated to achieve their dreams and goals need to pursue the career paths that will provide them with the appropriate skills and knowledge. Learners need to consider very carefully not only their career options but also their subject choices. It is therefore clear that this booklet on Maritime careers will contribute to the increased number of choices that learners will make. The Department will continue to expand the curriculum in new emerging sectors of the economy. In this regard, the Department has responded to the Provincial Growth and Development Plan (PGDP) to expand and establish a Maritime School in the province as a contribution to the provincial maritime strategy. The Department of Education is pleased to have partnered with the eThekwini Maritime Cluster (EMC) to promote Maritime Careers and expand them in the KwaZulu-Natal schooling sector.

It is our view that the maritime careers will contribute to the increased number of choices of careers that learners will make for their future developments. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education wishes to support learners in this exciting journey. Good luck in your studies.

foreword eTHEKWENI MARITIME CLUSTER and CENTRE FOR MARITIME INSTITUTE

Chairman: Wandile Mzamo It is very gratifying to reflect on the establishment and existence of the eThekweni Maritime Cluster (EMC), a cluster which was founded in the year 2009 – albeit long overdue! The EMC has therefore become a platform of collaborative engagement between the eThekweni Municipality, Provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDT), Transnet (TNPA and TPT), the entire Maritime Private Sector (through their respective constituencies / associations) as well as the local academic institutions. Amongst the key strategic objectives of EMC is to promote sustainable skills development. To this end, it is pleasing to advise that EMC has already officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with local tertiary institutions that are offering maritime studies; an event which was attended and blessed by the Mayor of Durban, Cllr James Nxumalo about two years ago. The next envisaged milestone and in line with EMC’s strategic objectives in Skills Development is the establishment of the Centre for Maritime Institute. EMC is accordingly ready to advance on this vital project (and objective), and Durban

being well positioned as the maritime hub for South Africa, and the busiest port in Africa, the respective institute will further enhance Durban as one of the greatest port cities of the world. Accordingly, EMC is the most appropriate vehicle in spearheading and playing a leading role on the establishment of the Centre for Maritime Institute that will provide maritime skills and education, maritime training and research that will not only benefit greater South Africa, but Africa and beyond. The Centre for Maritime Institute will equally directly benefit Africa ports infrastructure development insofar as skills and human resource capital needs going forward.

foreword eTHEKWENI MARITIME CLUSTER

MD: thato Tsautse EThekwini Maritime Cluster is a Non Profit Company that was launched in 2009. The EMC provides a platform for a collaborative engagement between different levels of government, state owned enterprises and the maritime community to implement programs of the common interest that support the growth and improve performance and competiveness of the maritime industry.

• To improve maritime safety, health and environment management. • To foster the development of the ship repair and boat and ship building sectors which offer good opportunities for employed creation. • To promote the eThekwini maritime industry locally, nationally and globally.

The vision of the eThekwini Maritime Cluster is to create a platform on which stakeholders and role players can work together towards the common goal of improving the competiveness of the maritime industry thereby contributing to the economic growth of the city, province and the country.

The EMC Programmes are 1. Advocacy Lobbying and Stakeholder Engagement 2. Research and Development 3. Enterprise Development 4. Industry Promotion 5. Training and Skills Development 6. Maritime Health, Environment and Safety 7. Shipbuilding, Ship Repair and Boatbuilding

The objectives of the EMC are • To provide a platform for role players to network with each other and to engage with government and Transnet to overcome infrastructural and institutional constraints. • To improve education and training for the maritime industry and to enable talented people to enter the industry. • To foster the growth of small and medium sized businesses in the industry as well as the transformation of the industry more generally.

In driving the Skills Development it was felt that EMC needs to reach learners in their desks, and the idea of this booklet was born. The purpose of this booklet is to enable the learner as well as their parents to know that there are Maritime Careers but importantly that there are institutions that offer Maritime Studies.

foreword CENTRE FOR MARITIME education

Chairman: Prof A.C. Bawa South Africa is a maritime nation and Durban is a maritime city. The history and the many flows of our beautiful city are intricately interwoven into the physical presence and the functioning of the port with its many forms of traffic – humans, ships, trains, trucks, cargo and so on. Durban is also home to the maritime industry. The KZN Provincial Government and the eThekwini Municipality have both been very proactive in shaping the city as a maritime hub, a maritime centre. The establishment of the eThekwini Maritime Cluster (EMC) was a natural outcome of this initiative and this structure is now vital to the project. It has developed a number of work streams, one of them being Education and Skills Development. It is out of this works stream that the idea came of elevating Durban and KZN as a centre for maritime education. The establishment of Durban as a Centre for Maritime Education is an exciting challenge. There are four universities in KwaZulu-Natal, ten further education and training colleges and a significant number of private sector post-school education institutions. Each of these provides courses and programmes of study that relate to all aspects of the maritime industry.

Our deliberations have resulted in four undergirding principles that would help us to think about the Centre for Maritime Education. 1. An education platform, which may be called the Durban Centre for Maritime Education, would be created that would facilitate the collaboration of all the interested institutions in the creation, offering and organization of courses and programmes. 2. We would make every effort to build a strong connection between the demand-side and supply-side so that the Centre would work closely with the maritime industry. 3. Other national and international providers of maritime education will be invited to work with us so that we can offer the full set of programmes that are required. In the mean time local capacity will be developed to provide all forms and types of courses and programmes that are required in the maritime sector. 4. The Centre for Maritime Education will draw students both nationally and internationally. We must build it as an outstanding centre. This is an exciting programme of action that will make a major contribution to the further evolution of Durban as a global maritime centre.

what is a perfect career choice? Have you ever wondered why some individuals are exceedingly successful at their careers while others drastically fail to ever reach their dream career paths? Surely this cannot be ascribed to luck. What then is a perfect career? All science behind building greater career choices indicate that any individual can be successful since most failed careers are mismatches resulting from individual’s faiure to follow their passion and natural talent. Consider your anticipated career path and ask yourself if you have arrived at your decision because of monetary and status reasons or because of passion and natural talent. If your decision is based on monetary and status reasons please be advised that there is a 99.9% chance for your career choice to fail whereas if your decision is based on passion and natural talent there is a 100% chance for your career choice to succeed.
