Lakes of the Region The five lakes and numerous waterways located throughout the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Region are the heart of outdoor recreation for locals and visitors alike. Nearly 50 miles of Lake Erie shoreline make up Chautauqua County’s northwestern border including windswept shores, beaches, and dramatic cliffs. Lake Erie is home to many water-based activities and attractions making it a great vacation destination. Comprised of two basins, Chautauqua Lake is 17 miles long and 2 miles wide at its widest point. This inland lake is a year-round destination for lake activities including boating, sailing, paddle sports, and fishing. Cassadaga Lakes is made up of three interconnected glacial lakes and is great for fishing large and smallmouth bass, northern pike, and muskellunge. Keep an eye out for other wildlife such as bald eagles, great horned owls, osprey, beavers, and painted turtles. Watersports including boating, paddle sports and fishing are popular activities at Findley Lake. The smallest lake in the region, Bear Lake, has a shoreline made up of 70% wetland, making it an excellent habit for bass and other predatory and prey fish.

Play: Lakes

Beaches & Lighthouses of Lake Erie Sunset Bay Beach, near Silver Creek, is known for its sandy shoreline and shallow water making it one of western NY’s favorite beaches. Sip fun cocktails and savor delicious food on the outside deck of Cabana Sam’s Beach Bar & Grill, adjacent to the beach so the fun doesn’t have to stop. One of the region’s best kept secrets is Barcelona Harbor. This beach in Westfield is wide and is perfect for a stroll in the sand, searching for beach glass, or enjoying a sunset lakeside campfire. Though there are no lifeguards here, the water is good for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. Picnic tables, free parking, a pier, several restaurants, and boat launch make it a bustling destination. Also located in Barcelona Harbor, the Barcelona Lighthouse is the nation’s First Natural Gas Lighthouse. Visit the keeper’s cottage to see exhibits chronicling both lighthouse and local history. Dunkirk’s Point Gratiot Park offers life-guarded swimming, picnic facilities and a playground, making it a popular spot for families. Nearby, visit the historic Dunkirk Lighthouse for the chance to climb up the observation deck for sweeping views of Lake Erie. Allow kids to cool off on hot days at the splash pad at Wright Park Beach, also located in Dunkirk. High bluffs provide a breathtaking view at Lake Erie State Park, where visitors can also enjoy the conveniences of picnic areas, playgrounds, cabin rentals, a disc golf course, and hiking trails.

World Class Fishing

DEEP WATER ANGLING, TRIBUTARY STREAMS AND INLAND LAKES Experience top notch fishing on all five lakes throughout the Chautauqua Lake Erie region. Largemouth and smallmouth black bass fishing is enjoyed by anglers on Lake Erie year-round. Bass are found along the entire New York shoreline with hotspots concentrated around rocky drop-offs in 15 to 35 feet of water. The eastern basin of Lake Erie is well-known for trophy-size walleye found in deeper waters. Lake Erie's tributary streams, collectively known as “Steelhead Alley”, receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called "steelhead." From October through April, thousands of steelhead ascend Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Canadaway, Silver, and Walnut Creeks on their mission to spawn allowing for excellent flyfishing opportunities. Among local inland lakes, Chautauqua Lake has exceptional fishing for walleye, bass, muskellunge and several species of panfish. It ranked #21 Best Bass Lake in the Northeast by Bassmaster (June 2023). Findley Lake’s beds of aquatic vegetation provide habitats for a variety of sportfish and panfish, while the three interconnected lakes of Cassadaga provide angling opportunities for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge and panfish. Bear Lake's shoreline is predominantly wetland, providing excellent habitat for bass and other predator and prey fish. Check TourChautauqua.com/Fishing for information regarding chartering a fishing expedition.

Winter Sports in Western NY Each winter, Chautauqua County receives a large amount of snow due to its proximity to Lake Erie and lake effect storms. For downhill winter sports including skiing, snowboarding and tubing, visit Peek’n Peak Resort in Clymer. Spend time on their over 20 slopes and trails as well as five progressive terrain parks. Need lessons? Peek’n Peak is also home to a renowned ski and snowboard school. Lessons can be private or with a group and are perfect for all ages. Their seven-lane tubing arena is enjoyed by families all season long. Their “Magic Carpet” lift allows for an easy trip back up to the top of the hill. At night, the lanes are transformed into a nighttime Lunar Lights Snow Tubing experience, highlighted by thousands of pulsing LED lights synchronized to music. Trails are popular with cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and fat-tire bikers in winter. Favorites include Long Point State Park on Chautauqua Lake, Lake Erie State Park, Boutwell Hill State Forest, the Eastside and Westside Overland Trails, Chautauqua Institution, and the Jamestown Audubon Community Nature Center. Visit our website at TourChautauqua. com/play/winter-sports for more information including rentals.

“Sip a cold

one with a beautiful lake view…”

Lake Erie’s Concord Grape Belt is made up of more than 30,000 vineyard acres along a 50mile trail and is home to over 20 wineries collectively known as Lake Erie Wine Country. The local wine selection spans the palette from dry to sweet, including award-winning dessert and ice wine, pinot noir and grigio, Riesling, port and more. Southern Tier Brewing Company, now one of the largest craft-makers in the country, invites you to tour the brewery where it all began. Grab a craft beer in the taproom or head to Southern Tier Distilling Company for a handcrafted cocktail. Sip a cold one with a beautiful lake view at Ellicottville Brewing Company’s Bemus Point location or grab a pint while listening to live music at Big Inlet Brewing. Farmers Markets occur in nearly every community during growing and harvest seasons. Visit Amish Country for roadside stands that sell bulk spices, baked goods, and produce throughout the countryside. U-pick produce is a fun activity for families. Head to local farms for the chance to pick in-season fruit, squash, and greens.

Must Do

1 Shop at a Local Farm Market There’s truly nothing like freshly grown produce. Stock up for locally grown fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices and homemade goods at any of the weekly farmer’s markets in the communities throughout the region. Markets begin in June and run through September. Visit our website event calendar for more information about the markets near you.

Did You Know? Grape growing began in the region over 150 years ago! Learn the history of grape growing in the region and what exactly makes the Lake Erie Concord Grape Belt superior at the Grape Discovery Center. See how grape products transition from vine to table and sample grape juice, wines, and other artisanal grape products. Shop for grape inspired gifts and art, plus bottles of wine.

2 Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth Taste a variety of handmade chocolates and desserts from local candy shops and bakeries. Try goatmilk fudge, pecan turtles, and sponge candy - a regional delicacy from Webb’s Candies. Enjoy hand-crafted artisanal pies and pastries paired with locally roasted coffee at PersNikkity Pies.

a Chautauqua 3 Create Cheeseboard

Maple Madness

Incorporate delicious artisanal meats, cheeses and spreads made in the Chautauqua-Lake Erie region on your next cheeseboard. Visit Cadwell’s Cheese House and the Truffle Honey Market at CHQ Marketplace to browse their curated selections of specialty foods. Don’t forget to pair it with local wine from Lake Erie Wine Country.

Celebrate Chautauqua’s Maple Syrup Bounty during New York State Maple Weekends every March. Tour local sugar houses to learn the process of turning sap into syrup. Taste fresh samples, attend maple themed events and purchase your own local maple syrup to enjoy at home again and again. Indulge in pancake breakfasts, French crepes paired with Maple Liqueur, maple candy and more. Can’t make it in March? Locally made maple syrup is available year-round at local shops and markets. www.tourchautauqua.com 866.908.ILNY(4569) |49

Craft Beer and Spirits Prefer beer and spirits? Plan a tour of the craft breweries and distilleries on the unofficial “brew and spirits trail” of Chautauqua County. Big Inlet Brewing is a farm-themed microbrewery and taproom in a converted hoop barn. Unwind in the cozy seating area in the transformed hayloft. Listen to live music and grab a bite from a food truck during your visit. Ellicottville Brewing Company has two locations in the region. EBC West complements its Fredonia college town surroundings, while the Bemus Point outpost offers indoor/outdoor dining on Chautauqua Lake. Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing/Mazza Chautauqua Cellars has options for all tastes, whether you prefer wine, beer or spirits! Southern Tier Brewing Company’s Lakewood location is the original brewhouse and taproom where it all began. Food and beer are served daily, stop in for a flavorful bite and seasonal beers on tap. Southern Tier Distilling Company creates unparalleled small batch spirits including whiskey, vodka, rum and gin. Visit the Empty Bottle to purchase a bottle or taste one of their handcrafted cocktails. Steelbound Brewery & Distillery has opened a new location in the Clarion Hotel in Dunkirk. Check out their list of craft brews, handcrafted cocktails, and delicious food.

The Chautauqua Experience Chautauqua Institution’s nine-week summer programming season offers a unique mix of performing and visual arts, educational lectures, interfaith experiences, and activities including golf, sailing and youth camps. There is much to do and see within Chautauqua’s picturesque lakeside grounds. For visitors who only have a short time to accomplish as much as possible, here are tips to make the most of a brief experience. Purchase a Day Pass (or Come on Sunday, When Admission is Free!): Gate passes are available in advance at tickets.chq.org or in person at the Institution’s Main Gate Welcome Center. Use the resources at chq.org in advance to discover art exhibitions, performances, lectures, worship services and readings offered on any given date, as well as other key guest information. Narrated Bus Tour: Purchase tickets for the 75-minute bus tour at the Main Gate Welcome Center daily during the summer. One tour daily is accessible for people with disabilities. An experienced guide will tell the fascinating story of Chautauqua Institution, from its founding in 1874 as a place to educate Methodist Sunday School teachers, to the inclusive and dynamic intergenerational community and programming it offers today. Rent a Bike: Cover the Chautauqua grounds quickly on two wheels or utilize shuttle transportation in this pedestrian-friendly community. Shop and Eat: Visit a variety of centrally located offerings around Bestor Plaza, the quintessential American town square, including a pair of juried craft fair weekends and a weeklong food festival. The Institution also maintains a museum quality gift shop at the Strohl Art Center and popular eateries with lake views. Stay the Night at the Athenaeum Hotel: Check athenaeum.chq. org for overnight packages at the Athenaeum Hotel that include general admission to popular Amphitheater concerts, breakfast on the grand porch, and charming accommodations at the Grand Dame of Chautauqua Lake.

Visit the City of Buffalo on the way, perhaps spending an afternoon touring their Buffalo Wing Trail including the Anchor Bar, the birthplace of Buffalo Wings. New York’s largest state park, Allegany State Park, is just east of the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Region. Hike, bike, horseback ride, cross country ski and snowmobile both paved and natural trails throughout 65,000 acres of rolling hills, meadows, ponds and two lakes. The SenecaIroquois National Museum is housed in the new Deyonöhsagwë:de’ Cultural Center in Salamanca. The Living Culture Village gives visitors an in-depth look at the traditional history of the Haudenosaunee people, with an emphasis on the Seneca people. Visit Western New York’s must-see artistic and architectural gems. One of America’s largest and oldest sculpture park, Griffis Sculpture Park, is located just outside of Ellicottville and features 50 monumental steel sculptures dispersed over miles of hiking trails. View two estates designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Isabelle and Darwin D. Martin nearby. Graycliff estate is located on a bluff overlooking Lake Erie just south of Buffalo and the Martin House Complex is in the city itself. Both properties include classic Wright features like cantilevered balconies, graceful terraces, and “ribbons” of windows. Sign up for a historic architecture tour of Buffalo.
