publisher’s note Summer at the Jersey Shore is an experience unto itself. For those of us lucky enough to live here year round, the sights and sounds have become part of our DNA. By the time our kids can sit up in a stroller they’ve experienced the boardwalk. They’ve heard the call of seagulls overhead; caught the aromas rising from concession stands; held a sphere of pink cotton candy as it dissolved between their fingers. And then they experienced the thrill of amusement piers...The “half joyful-half terrified” screams of roller coaster riders rounding a curve; carnival games with their enticing prize offerings; lights blinking in unison as the moon gave rise above a glistening evening ocean...and the unending, unmistakable sound of Laughter. Pure. Simple. Joy. This summer issue we are celebrating that Jersey Shore experience. From the history where it began in Atlantic City to where they’re celebrating a 50th Season in Wildwood. Generations of local families who have devoted their lives to the amusement experience for our families to enjoy. As JSF continues to evolve as your source for entertainment at the Jersey Shore, we invite you to make some special memories with your family...What will your Kids remember about the Summer of 2019?

PARENTING 101: Making The Case for Chores In the natural order of development toddlers quickly evolve into ‘little people.” That milestone also opens up the opportunity to introduce lessons in responsibility. While the introduction of ‘clean up’ duties to two year olds may seem premature, most young children thrive on independence and encouragement. As they develop into responsible citizens, children will continue to seek their parent’s praise and approval along the way. Parents of older children will agree there are times when completing the task themselves would be the lesser of two evils, as structure can set off a battle of the wills. Once cooler heads have prevailed, it’s always best to set the example of returning to or temporarily postponing the assignment. Staying committed to completing a task is a trait children will be challenged with long after these early years. For families with pets, it is essential

10

to oversee any chores that include the feeding and watering of animals. Children must first develop a sense of empathy and responsibility when caring for their furry, feathery, reptilian or aquatic family members. A better option may be to provide your little helpers with a small watering can and have them start with the ‘thirsty’ houseplants. The introduction of a chore chart may coincide best with your family’s lighter schedule during the summer months. Below is an age outline for reference when assigning household chores. These are just a sampling of the many opportunities to be found in and around your home. Once a routine is established, adding rewards or an allowance to compliment your praise is appropriate. As with anything in your child’s development, you’ll know what works best for you and your family. Look here for more ideas on CHORE CHARTS for kids of all ages!

Atlantic City’s Steel Pier June of 1870 saw the introduction of a mile long wooden walkway built over the beaches of Atlantic City. Conceived by railroad conductor Alexander Boardman, the design for the first “Boardwalk” was aimed to reduce the amount of sand tracked into hotel lobbies and railroad cars. The original structure was constructed in 12 foot sections and dismantled and stored during the winter season. What began as a maintenance solution one hundred and fifty years ago has evolved into an American Icon and a favorite attraction at the Jersey Shore. The present day Atlantic City Boardwalk is the World’s longest at 4+ miles and sits adjoining two Piers, each with their own celebrated history. Arguably the most famous and one of the oldest landmarks in Atlantic City is the Steel Pier, named after the steel girders that supported the structure 1600 feet out over the ocean. When it opened in June 1898, it’s attractions, rides and exhibits earned the Pier such taglines as “An Amusement City at Sea”, “A Vacation in Itself ” and the “Showplace of the Nation”. Dr. Jonathan Pitney was instrumental in planning the resort with his

12

vision of an amusement pier rising over the ocean. George Hamid who would become an owner in later years, introduced many of the unusual acts that the Steel Pier would become famous for, including the Human Cannonball, Diving Bell and the Skiing Dog. However the most legendary attraction in its decades long history was undoubtedly Carvers Diving Horses. Horses with riders atop, would dive off a platform approximately 40 feet high above the audience into a pool of water. They were so popular during their run that in 1929 they became a permanent feature. The show closed permanently in the 1970s, but was made famous again in 1991 with the release of a fictionalized Disney movie “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken”. The show’s headline female performer, Senora Carver, lived out her final years in Egg Harbor Township before her death in 2003. Steel Pier has also been host to many legends and entertainers including the Three Stooges, Abbott and Costello, The Beatles, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross and The Supremes and many other notable celebrities. Regrettably, fires in the years of 1969 and 1982 completely destroyed Steel Pier changing the boardwalk’s landscape for a decade. In 1993 a joint venture between the Catanoso Brothers, Taft Johnson, Edward Olwell and Trump Taj Mahal enabled the iconic landmark to be rebuilt and reopened. Like the materials used in the original structure, the modern pier is constructed of concrete and steel spanning 1000 feet out over the Atlantic. A new addition in 2001 saw the inclusion of a heliport and ‘Steel Pier Helicopter Tours’ at the furthest point of the rebuilt pier. After leasing the the pier for 18 months, in 2011 the Catanoso Family purchased it from Trump Entertainment for $4.25 million, operating under the LLC name, Steel Pier Associates. In

Jersey Shore Family Summer 2019

the winter of 2017 they launched their newest venture, a $14 million Observation Wheel. At 227 ft high, “The Wheel” at Steel Pier has been Atlantic CIty’s most welcomed attraction in decades. As the third largest Wheel in the U.S. it is completely comprised of galvanized steel to offset the fluctuating temperatures and sea salt air throughout the year. With seating capacity for up to 240 passengers, the 15

minute ride offers 360* panoramic views of the shoreline and Absecon Island. Added to the frame of this man made marvel are 14,000 LED lights, illuminating 40 climate controlled gondolas for spectacular nighttime riding. While the face of Atlantic City continues to change with the times, the foundation on which it was built remains. Get to know the Jersey Shore with your Family, Again.

Atlantic City’s Absecon Lighthouse

With its miles of inviting coastline, the Jersey Shore has long been a natural attraction for centuries of seasonal visitors, the first being the Nanticoke Lenni Lenape People. They were followed by Dutch and English explorers in the 17th and 18th centuries who claimed their place in South Jersey’s early history. Recognized as a Quaker commonwealth in 1702, today some of South Jersey’s same locations are considered the country’s oldest seaside destinations. During the Victorian Era, cool shore breezes made the beaches of Cape May, Atlantic City and Ocean City particularly attractive to early travelers. Sweltering temperatures combined with the modest fashions of the day made a trip to the Jersey Shore a relief and delight of the

summer season. Dr. Jonathan Pitney relocated to South Jersey in 1819 and later began promoting Absecon Islandhome of the future Atlantic City, as a seashore health resort. He would come to be regarded as the ‘Father of Atlantic City’ for his contribution to the City’s design and development. Records of the period from 1846-1856, indicate that sixty-four maritime vessels were wrecked within a radius of 10 miles of Atlantic City. In April 1854, the U.S. Ship “Powhattan” traveling from France to New York City with approximately 300 German emigrants, ran aground just north of Absecon Island on what was then known as the Barnegat Shoals. The following day the ship broke apart resulting in the loss of her entire crew and passengers. Today it is still considered one of the deadliest shipwrecks in New Jersey history. After the Powhattan disaster Dr. Pitney, then a delegate to the New Jersey Constitutional Convention, lobbied for a Congressional grant of $35,000 for the construction of the Absecon Lighthouse at the Absecon Inlet. The Lighthouse was designed by George Meade, who would later become the General in the Union’s successful Battle for Gettysburg six years later. The first lighting on the completed light tower came in January 1857 with its fixed Fresnel lens. Today, the original lens is on display, made of lead glass weighing approximately 12,800 pounds. Although the light still shines every night, it is no longer an active navigational aid. At 171 feet tall, The Absecon Lighthouse retains its place as the tallest lighthouse in the state of New Jersey and the third-tallest masonry

Celebrating a Golden Anniversary in WIldwood:

The Morey’s Brand turns 50!

WOODSTOCK, The MOON LANDING, SESAME STREET all major events that shaped a generation and American culture in 1969. For fans of the Jersey Shore, the opening of the Surfside Pier at 26th Street in North Wildwood was just a glimpse into the Bigger Dreams the Morey Family would deliver over the next fifty years!

Wildwood-By-The-Sea as it was known early on was considered the center of the East Coast’s post-World War II cultural explosion. With the completion of the Garden State Parkway in 1955, a building boom began along the seaside resorts of South Jersey. Known for their wide beaches, as much as 500 yards in some places, development around Wildwoods’ boardwalk would become a natural draw for seasonal tourism. Capitalizing on the Doo Wop theme of the day, the architecture grew to reflect the style of the tail-fin cars that were dialed into rock and roll stations as they headed for the beaches and boardwalks at the Jersey Shore. The first thoughts for an attraction in the Northeast were conceived after the (Senior) Morey Brothers saw a giant slide in Fort Lauderdale and realized the potential for its success. The vision for the 12-lane fiberglass slide called “The Wipe Out” began with an admission of .25 and quickly exceeded their expectations. In 2010 the slide was refurbished and utilized as a waterslide for their water parks. The early 70s saw the inclusion of mini golf, kiddie rides and a haunted house followed by more land and pier development. Food

concessions, retail shops and yearly acquisitions of new rides and attractions continued to grow the Brand. Waterslide complexes at the Surfside Pier and newly acquired Mariner’s Pier rounded out the decade. A major fire on that Pier and the Starlight Ballroom in 1981 did not deter their progress. Five attractions were added in 1985 while the Waterslide complex was renamed “Raging Waters” when it became a full fledged waterpark. The yearly additions continued to include “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” and a third Pier (Fun Pier) in 1986. More daring rides were added in the 1990s aimed at a more adventurous market. They included go carts, bungee jumping, rock climbing, helicopter rides and the always thrilling roller coasters! Hunt’s Pier (Adventure Pier) became another acquisition in 1998 for future expansion. The new century saw industry recognition for the Morey Family when the patriarch of the family, Will Morey Sr. was posthumously inducted into the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Hall of Fame. The addition of a Beach Picnic Pavilion in 2003, ushered in the era of large scale company picnics, hosting record numbers of casino employee events. X-treme rides and food eateries continued to grow the Morey Brand as they introduced bigger and better experiences. Fire struck again on Mariners Landing in 2008, but again it was fully restored. Appealing to the water lovers was the metamorphosis of the Lazy River at Raging Waters to ‘River Adventure’ in 2012, complete with waterfalls, geysers and hand carved rock faces. At Ocean Oasis Waterpark and Beach

Jersey Shore Family Summer 2019

Club, Morey’s second waterpark, an old familiar name resurfaced with the addition of a new six lane racer slide again named “Wipeout”. This nostalgic return was then followed by another past favorite in 2015 when KONG made his colossal comeback. More growth continued into the second decade as the attractions numbered over one hundred. Other additions included a Beer Garden and a Dog Friendly Beach Bar, to coincide with a yearly event for Dog Families in September. To kick off Morey’s 50th Anniversary Season, a four million dollar investment was made to this year’s newest addition-the “Runaway Tram” rollercoaster. The custom designed ride was themed after Wildwood’s Sightseer Tramcar, famous for transporting visitors on the boardwalk to the familiar recording of “Watch the Tramcar”. The 2019 Season will have you coming back for Summer Camps, Sports Tournaments, Oktoberfest, Scouting and Fellowship events and more! There’s never been a better time to take advantage of the many opportunities afforded with living at the Jersey Shore! For more information, https://www.moreyspiers.com/info

Renee Johnson Gifted with an adventurous spirit and boundless energy, Renee Johnson is a believer in the joy of mud, slip and slide paint, slime swimming, feather pillow bed fights and baking flour tosses. So in this technology driven world, she’s made it her mission to encourage imaginative play and childhood memories. As an elementary reading teacher and reading specialist, she introduced a program that enabled her to bring ‘books to life’ through the magic of photoshop! “Helping kids get excited about reading is crucial to their reading success” she says. Although these days she doesn’t teach in a school system Renee still oversees the program, volunteering her time to the project in several local schools. Being a volunteer comes naturally for Renee. A Brownie/Junior Leader for the Girl Scouts of Central and Southern Jersey, she holds a special place in her heart

for community service. “I was a scout for several years and I loved how it kept us connected to society. Scouting gives kids a sense of worthiness, belonging and goodness to help others and the planet.” When she isn’t working as a volunteer Renee can also be found directing a class as an aerobics instructor or utilizing her abilities as a children’s freelance photographer. Like her “books to life” project, Renee uses her photoshop skills to create magical scenarios to enhance her subjects. What began as a stress reliever has earned her the distinction of ‘Mud’ Photographer-but she’ll happily invite messes of all “textures!” Her work life aside, it is her homelife that earns Renee the title of “SuperMom”. Together with her husband, a set a twins in fourth grade and a younger sister behind them she is busy with their activities, including traveling soccer. When asked how she keeps her life in balance, she replies: “Photography is my therapy. Going outdoors and photographing other families is a way for me to get space from my own kids. I used to feel guilty when I would spend time away from them, but now I realize it is healthy for everyone!” We are proud to present our SUMMER Spotlight, from Egg Harbor Township, Renee Lynn Johnson!
