Apprenticeships and traineeships

Diplomas

‘Earn while you learn’ with an apprenticeship or traineeship. These can be undertaken full-time, part-time or even while you are still at school as part of our innovative STEP program.

A diploma is an ideal way for you to reach management and supervisory roles, and offers more in-depth training if you want to pursue a career requiring a high technical ability, or if you seek a direct pathway to university (please note that not all diploma courses offer articulation to university).

Apprentices and trainees are contracted to an employer for the time it takes to gain skills in a trade or vocational area – usually between one and four years – and are paid to do a job while learning new skills at the same time. Best of all, at the end of your training, you will receive a nationally recognised qualification. Certificates Certificate courses are offered at levels I – IV and are ideal for professional development, career enhancement, work entry and re-entry to the workforce. You can enrol at a level that suits your current skills and knowledge and exit at a level that suits your goals. These qualifications are often core courses from diploma courses, and students wishing to undertake further study to diploma level will gain credit for any certificate courses completed.

Advanced diplomas An advanced diploma aims to give you command of wide-ranging, highly specialised technical, creative or conceptual skills in a particular field. SBIT has formed partnerships with a number of universities to provide articulation into specific degree courses for dual qualifications. Associate degrees SBIT is the first public Institute in Queensland to offer the Associate Degree in Civil Engineering. This unique qualification can give you up to two years credit for university studies, and will equip you with the skills you need to undertake professional employment in the civil engineering sector. Post-degrees – vocational graduate certificates and diplomas These unique qualifications, positioned between bachelor and masters level qualifications, are developed in consultation with industry and focus on areas of expertise that are experiencing high demand in the world market. Practical, hands-on advanced training is provided in areas such as biotechnology, architecture, community education and a range of teaching specialisations.

Study disciplines Go to course search at southbank.edu.au Southbank Institute of Technology provides access to high quality vocational education across an extensive range of study disciplines. These include: • creative industries • tourism and hospitality • engineering and design • digital media • industry and trades • sciences • health services • community services • beauty and recreation • communication and general education • business and information technology • language and literacy • specific courses for Indigenous Australian Peoples.

Pathways to university Go to southbank.edu.au/pathways Phone 13 72 48 If you’re keen to go to university, but you don’t have an OP, or didn’t get the right OP, there is an alternative way to get there. By completing a diploma or advanced diploma at SBIT, you can improve your OP score and heighten your chances of securing a place to university. Many SBIT qualifications articulate into degree courses with selected universities. As a recognised centre of excellence for its pathways to universities, SBIT continues to nurture partnerships with major Queensland universities to give diploma, advanced diploma and associate degree graduates recognition for the quality of education and training they receive at Southbank Institute of Technology.

The Southbank Tertiary Entrance Program (STEP) is designed for school students beginning Year 11. The program offers units that build toward a diploma qualification. Over two years STEP (Years 11 and 12) students are offered an on-campus experience, attending class and/or sharing facilities with Southbank Institute of Technology’s full-time and part-time students. STEP students are required on campus for up to eight hours each week. STEP study is a part of a student’s high school curriculum and provides credits toward their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Following Year 12, STEP students have the opportunity to complete their diploma program with confirmed entry and credit into the course they have been studying. The majority of diplomas offered will provide pathways and credit to university courses.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Go to southbank.edu.au/rpl Phone 13 72 48 Email rplcoordinator@southbank.edu.au Many of the skills we gain in life are obtained in ways other than through formal training. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that acknowledges these skills. You may have acquired industry-relevant skills on the job, through paid or unpaid work experience, life experience or through participation in community-based work. Assessment through the RPL process can provide you with a full or part qualification, and avoid the duplication of training. It may be used to identify what training you will need to complete a qualification, or could provide a pathway to higher qualifications if you may not have formal access to further training.
