OFFICERS
The Free Concert Seats for Families program, now in its tenth season, provides students ages 8 to 18 an opportunity to attend any of our four Lobero series concerts with a parent or guardian for FREE! This unique program offers young people the thrilling experience of attending a live classical performance with their family in a real concert-going atmosphere. Free Concert Seats for Families educates students about music and concert etiquette in a professional performance. Classical Connections The Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra is excited to introduce Classical Connections, a new community engagement program that shares the therapeutic benefits of classical music with Santa Barbara elders. Working in collaboration with the Friendship Center and the Alzheimer’s Association, California Central Chapter, Classical Connections will extend the physical and emotional power of music to individuals suffering from various cognitive and neurological conditions. HEIICHIRO OHYAMA Music Director and Conductor
Heiichiro Ohyama holds the position of Music Director and Conductor of the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, Artistic Director of Chanel Pygmalion Chamber Music Series in Tokyo, and Artistic Director of “Music-Dialogue!” Born in Kyoto, Japan, Mr. Ohyama studied violin and chamber music at the Toho Music High School and College. He graduated from London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1970. He then entered Indiana University where he studied viola with William Primrose; violin with Josef Gingold, Ruggiero Ricci, and Franco Gulli; and chamber music with Janos Starker and Manaham Pressler. He later taught as a visiting lecturer at Indiana University. Participating in the Marlboro Music Festival over several summers, beginning in 1972, Mr. Ohyama became increasingly in demand as a violist and has continued to perform throughout the United States and abroad. In 1974, he won the Young Concert Artist International Audition Award of New York. Appointed as Principal “[The SBCO] is one of Violist for the Los Angeles the best orchestras on Philharmonic in 1979 under the West Coast. Why? Music Director of Nagasaki Music Festival from 20072009. He was also Professor of Music at University of California from 1973 to 2003. In 2005, he received the ‘Fukuoka City Cultural Prize’ and in 2008, ‘Outstanding Performance Award’ by the Japanese Government. In 2014, he was recognized for his ‘Artistic contribution’ by the City of Santa Barbara, USA.

Born in California, Wendy Chen debuted with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the age of 15 under conductor André Previn. She won First Prize in the National Chopin Competition, the Young Concert Artists auditions, was an inaugural recipient of the Gilmore Young Artists Award, and was named a Presidential Scholar by the National Foundation for the Arts. Ms. Chen is one of the most sought after pianists and chamber musicians, performing on many of the world’s most prestigious concert stages. She has appeared in unique programs that also featured musical legends Art Garfunkel and James Taylor; and in a private concert for the justices of the United States Supreme Court, presented by the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Highlights have included an all-Chopin recital at the National Philharmonic Hall in Warsaw; recording with the London Philharmonic; Spoleto USA tours with Charles Wadsworth; recitals with cellists Carter Brey and Andrés Diaz and violinists James Ehnes, Chee-Yun, Anne Akiko Meyers, Andrès Cardenes and Elina Vähälä; appearances in South America, Finland, the Forbidden City in Beijing, and at Festival Week in Tokyo. Ms. Chen’s performances are regularly heard on NPR’s Performance Today. She gives masterclasses and lectures throughout the world, and serves as panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts.

PAUL HUANG Recipient of a prestigious 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant, Taiwanese-American violinist Paul Huang is quickly gaining attention for his eloquent music making, distinctive sound, and effortless virtuosity. His recent and upcoming engagements include debuts with the Houston, Pacific, Omaha Symphonies, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, Louisiana and Seoul Philharmonics, as well as return engagements with the Detroit, Alabama, Bilbao Symphonies, and National Symphonies of Mexico and Taiwan. This season he appears in recital at the Melbourne Chamber Music Society, University of Colorado, Rockefeller University. He also appears at White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg at the invitation of Valery Gergiev, and returns to the Chamber Music Society of Palm Beach, Caramoor Festival’s Rising Stars series, and Camerata Pacifica as their Principal Artist. In addition to his sold-out recital at Lincoln Center on the Great Performers series, he has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Phillips Collection, the Gardner Museum, the Seoul Arts Center in Korea, and the Louvre in Paris. His first solo CD, a collection of favorite encores, is on the CHIMEI label.

Mr. Huang, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Juilliard, won the 2011 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. He plays the Guarneri del Gesù Cremona 1742 ex-Wieniawski violin, on loan through the Stradivari Society, and is a member of Chamber Music Society Two.

Pianist Alessio Bax – a First Prize winner at the Leeds and Hamamatsu International Piano Competitions and a 2009 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient – has appeared as soloist with more than 100 orchestras worldwide, including the London Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, Japan’s NHK Symphony, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic under Yuri Temirkanov, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with Sir Simon Rattle. Recent highlights include a Minnesota Orchestra debut under Andrew Litton; a return to Bravo! Vail with the Dallas Symphony and Jaap van Zweden; performances with London’s Southbank Sinfonia and Vladimir Ashkenazy; a recital tour of South America including three concerts at the famed Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires; tours of Asia with both Joshua Bell and Daishin Kashimoto; concerts with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York and on tour; and a solo recital at the Cliburn Concerts series in Fort Worth. Among festival appearances are England’s International Piano Series and the Aldeburgh and Bath festivals, Switzerland’s Verbier Festival, the Risør Festival in Norway, Germany’s Ruhr Klavier-Festival and Beethovenfest, and the U.S.’s Music@Menlo, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and Italy’s Incontri in Terra di Siena Festival, where he was recently appointed Artistic Director for a three-year term starting in 2017. At age 14, he graduated with top honors from the conservatory of Bari, his hometown in Italy, and after further studies in Europe he moved to the U.S. in 1994. A Steinway artist, he resides in New York City with his wife, pianist Lucille Chung, and their daughter.
