New Faces at the Nest Last week was an exciting one at the Nest - particularly for Athletics. We are pleased to introduce our new Baseball, Men's Basketball and Football coaches. Also, if your child is interested in playing a sport for the Eagles, please pay special attention to our sports report this week for opportunities to meet the coaches and get in some workouts.

Jake Garbuzinski – Director of Admissions & Head Baseball Coach With a skill set that includes high school recruiting and advancement, as well as alumni relations and teaching, Jake will be taking the reigns as Director of Admissions and the Head Baseball Coach at SBA. A lifelong Memphian, Jake attended school at Holy Rosary and Christian Brothers High School before earning his B.S. in Business Management at Christian Brothers University. At CBU he was a four-year starter and letterman and the only baseball player in the school’s history to be named to the Gulf South Conference All-Tournament Team. After graduation, he coached at Munford High School and then Rhodes College, where he led the team to an SAA Conference Championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. He also served as the Director of Advancement at Christian Brothers High School. Following a stint in the private sector, Garbuzinski’s passion for education and student athletes called him back to coaching and recruiting. Jake cannot wait to be an Eagle, stating, “My wife, my daughter and I could not be happier to get to be a part of a fantastic school like Saint Benedict. I am thrilled to get on campus, meet the families and start this incredible journey. I want to thank Mrs. Morris, Mr. Weyant and the hiring committee for their trust in me, and I look forward to the opportunity to build enrollment for the school and lead the baseball program in the years to come."

Joshua Weeden - Head Men's Basketball Coach Joshua Weeden is the new Head Coach of the Men's Basketball

Team. Born a motivator, Joshua honed his coaching skills with a Master of Education in Sports Administration from Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee. Joshua comes to SBA from a management position at Reform Sports Training, as well as being the Founder and Director of Charitable Donations for the West Tennessee Youth Basketball Association. He has also served as the Assistant Basketball Coach at the University School of Nashville and the Head Basketball Coach at St. Pius X in Nashville. Coach Weeden has worked with many high level prospects, and sent players on to professional ranks, as well as D1, D2, D3 and NAIA schools. Coach Weeden is passionate about the student athlete and prides himself on his inclusive approach and transparency in communications. Eager to get to work, he shared with us: "It is with great honor and privilege that I have been chosen to lead the St. Benedict Eagles boys basketball program. Establishing a culture of education, commitment, and accountability will be at the forefront of our mission."

Joey Magnifico - Head Football Coach St. Benedict Football MVP Joey Magnifico is returning to the Nest after a standout career at the University of Memphis to lead the Eagles football program as Head Coach. During his time as a player at SBA he was named first team all-region and allstate, Commercial Appeal Best of Preps and played in the Liberty Bowl High School All-Star game. At the University of Memphis, he built an impressive highlights reel, including playing in 53 games, 35 starts, 71 receptions with 12 touchdowns and the most receiving yards by a tight end in Memphis Tigers Football history. All the while, the lessons Magnifico learned in the classrooms at Varnavas Drive set him up well for academic success, earning spots on the American Athletic Conference AllAcademic Team, the Dean’s List and the Tiger 3.0 Club during his tenure at University of Memphis. “I’m all in. And I’m asking the players and the families and the school to be all in too,” Magnifico stated at an impromptu introductory meeting Wednesday night with some of the current SBA football families. Magnifico plans to bring in some of his mentors to help him as he intensifies passion for Friday nights at SBA. Hard work – on the field, in the gym and in the classroom – as well as establishing that true Eagle family atmosphere are going to be the hallmarks of his program.
