Editor spills the beans... Hello and welcome to the very first issue of Guilty Pleasures. (p15) We’ve got all this and much more, so you have no excuse for not sticking with us! Thanks for picking up a copy of our first issue, be sure to tweet or email us what you think as suggestions for future copies. You stay classy and thanks for stopping by. I’m Ron Burgundy.

Second place is the first to lose T doesn't buy talent!”

With her came a whole host of young aspiring dancers between six and twelve, and their forever gossiping and arguing mothers who all just want the best for their blossoming daughters. Drama-fuelled, and at times frankly unsettling, the car-crash moments prove to be some of the greatest in reality television history, but for all the wrong reasons. Just two episodes in, and we’ve already seen some monumental confrontations between the mothers and Abby. Whilst the parents have claimed they are paying Abby to teach their kids, she’ll hit back fiercely with: “money doesn’t buy talent.” Battle: Dance teacher Abby will make her students battle for the top spot in the new show The dramatics seem set to continue this week as the latest addition to this troupe of ‘Dance Moms’, Cathy, decides to switch the solo her daughter was given by Abby to something she already knows – not a good move! Abby is an incredibly interesting character and says she wants nothing but the best for her students, claiming: “second place is the first to lose.” In its fourth season stateside, there’s no sign the show will be leaving our screens anytime soon Strik – and we cannot wait to see what ea a nd m pose: T else the dancers, mothers and the Danc others a he dance infamous Abby have in store for us. t r e Co mpa The Abb s We’ve got our series link set already. ny, P y Lee enns ylvan Catch Dance Moms every Tuesday ia at 9pm on the Bio channel

ex, lies, scandals and daytime drinking are back. Everybody’s favourite advertising agent, Don Draper, returns for a sixth season of Mad Men, starting this Sunday in the US and hitting Sky Atlantic on Wednesday with a two-hour season opener. The penultimate season of the 60s drama is set to show “a lot of our favourite characters doing a lot of different things” with a lot of story still to tell, according to Don himself – Jon Hamm. His on-screen wife, Jessica Paré (Megan Draper) told AMC in a season preview, there’s a massive moment awaiting us this season. “It’s not coming in the way that you thought it was coming. It’s probably not coming at all!”

We left Don, Roger, Bert, Joanie and Pete at the end of season five, set in 1966-7, mourning the tragic suicide of fellow partner, Lane (Jared Harris) whilst their agency, Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce looked set to finally turn a corner, leading to the office expanding to a second floor. Creator Matt Weiner had us screaming in frustration at our TVs in the season finale when it looked like a seemingly happy Don had gone back to his old cheating ways after being approached by a girl in a bar, as Megan secured her first big acting break. We also saw Roger (John Slattery, above) standing naked in his hotel window after another experiment with LSD. What could that mean for season six?

DOCTOR WHO

Words: Becky Milburn

It has been a long three months, but part two of Doctor Who series seven is here at last. Life without our weekly dose of Matt Smith has been less than entertaining but with a fantastic adventure promised for the next seven episodes, it’s hard to contain our excitement. Although this series will say goodbye to Karen Gillan (Amy Pond) and Arthur Darvill (Rory Williams), we have plenty of thrills to look forward to as the show builds to its climatic 50th anniversary year. This week’s episode, The Rings of Akhaten, sees the Doctor whisk Clara off to the inhabited rings of the planet Akhaten in which the Festival of Offerings is taking place. As the pilgrims and natives get ready for the ceremony, Clara (Jenna Louise Coleman) meets the young Queen of Years. However, like all things Doctor Who, not everything is as it seems and a stir in the pyramid means a sacrifice must be made. (April 6, 9pm, BBC One)

THE MINDY PROJECT

s

If you didn’t fall in love with Vera Mindy Chokalingham when she starred as Kelly Kapoor in The Office, don’t worry you’ve still got time. Last week The Mindy Project finally aired in the UK, and what an arrival it was. If your schedule meant you didn’t catch the first episode of the much loved US comedy series, we suggest you tune in and get hooked! Like many of us, Mindy Lahiri is determined to kick those bad habits by being more punctual, lose weight, spend less money and in the process, pursue the perfect guy. Now that the pilot is out of the way, we can finally get excited about Mindy’s funny, impatient and politically incorrect nature in episode two. Whilst Mindy and Danny (Chris Messing) re-establish their workplace chemistry, a new potential love interest is on the horizon - none other than American actor and comedian, Seth Meyers. Without spoiling too much, let’s just say this episode promises some witty pop culture references and a lot to laugh at. (Tonight, 9.45pm, E4)

X-Factor star Rylan Clark belting out a tune on the show in 2012. Is Reality TV all that?

REALI T Y

ADDICTion? Whether you’re a casual or avid watcher of reality television, you’ve probably enjoyed some time in front of the box watching the lives of others unfold and deciding who you love, or love to hate

F

rom the long-running types like Big Brother and X Factor, to relatively new shows such as Geordie Shore and The Only Way Is Essex, there now seems to be a show for absolutely everybody who wants to switch off their brain and relax. Lisa McGarry, the founder of unrealitytv. co.uk gives her insight on the trend. She says, “There’s nothing better than a good old gossip about what is going on in

“Reality TV is massively successful because human beings have a natural instinct for curiosity”

Words: Daniel Falconer Image: mtv.co.uk

our friends’ and families’ lives and the genre of reality TV opens that up to celebrities and people we would never normally get to meet in real life.” But why do we bother tuning in week after week? Lisa continues: “The genre is expansive. Whether you are interested in footballers and their hangers-on, your favourite singer and their family life, university age kids living it up in their first non-parental home, young doctors, fishermen, chefs, CEOs, interior designers or hoarders, there is a show that will catch your attention and pique your interest. “Better still, the good ones keep you hooked. You want to know who is going to win the recording contract, who will take the glitter ball trophy and how Snooki will react to being dumped. Somehow we grow to feel like we know these people and it’s not just TV; it’s real life.” Admit it; you can definitely relate.

But what’s the future for reality television? With shows such as Dancing On Ice facing a ratings slump here in the UK and American Idol abroad in the States, has it come to a grinding halt? Boyd Hilton, television and reviews editor for Heat Magazine, doesn’t think so. He says: “Reality television is popular because the formats are compelling and easily understood and they can run for many years simply by casting new people every series. So a show like Big Brother, which has the purest concept of all - just gathering real people in a house, subjecting them to the rule of Big Brother and watching what happens - feels like an annual event.” As for the future of reality television, Boyd says: “Reality television will continue to thrive. Some shows might get less popular or die altogether, but the genre is here to stay. It’s too popular, and relatively inexpensive (compared to scripted drama for example), for it not to be a key part of TV forever more. “I like reality television as much as I like any genre of TV - if it’s good. That is, a good series of Big Brother, with interesting people given clever tasks is still worth watching, whereas a dull series of it with the same old kinds of characters won’t be worth watching. “As with many cases, it would seem that quality is much preferred over quantity, and so we will probably see with the rise in the amount of television shows a mirrored rise in the amount of shows that get cancelled, because they’re just not that great.” Whatever the case may be, reality television seems set as a genre and continues to fill a void in those people’s lives that need a little rest. We say bring it on. There can never be too many hours to spend in front of the telly box, now where’s that remote gone?

GUILT Y! FILM

spring/sum previ

It’s not too early to get excited for an amazing season of film. The Guilty Pleasures team have picked out some fantastic sci-fi flicks and outrageous comedies that you can look forward to seeing this year

S

o here we go for yet another Scary Movie sequel, which will now be their fifth spoof edition, out on April 12, and one which will no doubt make you go wild. The story centres around happilymarried couple Dan (Scary Movie alumni Simon Rex) and Jody, played by High School Musical babe Ashley Tisdale. The new parents start to notice some strange activity after they bring their newborn baby Aiden home from hospital. It later becomes clear that something or someone has been messing with their lives, including Jody’s ballet career and Dan’s work as an ape researcher. The only possible answer is that an evil demon has entered their home to wreak havoc.

With the help of so-called experts and home-surveillance cameras, they must find out how to get rid of it before it’s too late. With cameos from Charlie Sheen and everybody’s favourite train-wreck actress Lindsay Lohan, director Malcolm D. Lee and writer David Zucker have really stepped it up with their return to the Scary Movie throne. They’ve even landed heavyweight Mike Tyson for a guest role after his successful appearance in The Hangover. Scary Movie does ‘hilarious horror’ better than any other movie franchise and fans’ expectations are high. We bet you can’t wait to grab some popcorn and laugh ‘til your sides hurt at every cringe-worthy comment, and the occasional, childish penis joke.

Last orders, lads!

W

e’ve all had our fair share of hangovers, that not even a couple of paracetamol and a cooked breakfast can cure. The room’s still spinning, your stomach’s churning, and you’re asking “what did I drink last night?!” We then vow to never touch a drop of alcohol ever again… until we’re back on it next Friday night with a pet giraffe in our room... Maybe that’s why the cast of The Hangover continue with their crazy antics, and why people around the world are so hooked on watching them!

“It will be a fitting conclusion to our three-part opera of mayhem, despair and bad decisions”

The boys are back for their final session, which will be unleashed in cinemas around the UK on Friday May 24. It’s third time unlucky for our Hangover cast, and we’re eagerly waiting to see what they have in store for us. We can almost

guarantee that there’ll be lots of swearing, partial nudity, some sex and they could potentially lose a member of the group. It’s been revealed that this time, there’s no wedding, no bachelor party and no crazy arrangement planned for the boys. That means nothing can go wrong, right? Except we all know that when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off. From the trailer, we know we can expect a reunion between Stu and his stripper ex-wife Jade. It’s also been revealed that Ken Jeong’s character, Mr Chow will play a close-to-lead role in this third film, and Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy along with several other well-known actors will also be making appearances. As director Todd Phillips explained to Digital Spy, “I’m so excited to embark on another Hangover film with Bradley, Ed and Zach. We’re going to surprise a lot of people with the final chapter we have planned. It will be a fitting conclusion to our three-part opera of mayhem, despair and bad decisions.” We look forward to seeing what shocks he has in store for us.

one are the days when only the ‘geeks’ and ‘losers’ read comic books and obsessed over superheroes in the playground or in their mate’s bedroom. The world has gone sci-fi crazy over the past few years. People seem to love the idea of escaping into a fantasy world, where the underdog gets bitten by a radioactive spider and beats the baddies into a pulp with their superhuman strength. Marvel’s Avengers Assemble grossed $1.5 billion worldwide and the franchise shows absolutely no sign of slowing down, with sequels popping up all the time. Now DC Comics are looking to get a slice of the action, with rumours of a Justice League movie being set for 2015, with Christian Bale and Henry Cavill reprising their Batman and Superman personas. Wonderwoman, Green Lantern and The Flash could also make an appearance. Sounds like nerd-vana! Even if you don’t know your mutants from your Kryptonians and you just like looking at men in tights, 2013 could be the perfect year for you to get clued-up, as there are three huge superhero films due out this summer. For more comic book goodness, see our gaming section for a preview of DC Comics latest creation, Injustice: Gods Among Us

Iron Man 3 (May 3)

Billionaire, philanthropist playboy Tony Stark isn’t your average superhero to say the least. Maybe that’s why he’s so appealing? Stark created the Iron Man suit to save his own life and that’s his main priority – protecting humanity was just an added bonus. Now we’ll see a new Tony, with his back against the wall, and his personal life crumbling around him. He’s faced with a major new enemy, The Mandarin, and his sidekick Aldrich Killian, who may just be able to control Extremis, a scientific program which can alter ‘biological reality’ and basically rip apart the Iron Man suit, leaving Stark no more than just a man. Scary thought, shame he doesn’t have any superhero pals he can call to help him out... Man of Steel (June 14) Arguably the most recognisable superhero of all, the tale of Superman has been well-covered in both film and TV. Now the next wildly anticipated incarnation will fly onto our screens in June with Immortals and The Tudors hunk Henry Cavill starring as the Man of Steel. Following the Superman legend, a baby called Kal-El is sent to Earth by his father Jor-El (Russell Crowe) to protect him from the battles on the planet Krypton and

to complete his ‘true destiny’. The child becomes Clark Kent, a farm-boy and a journalist at the Daily Planet. This will be the second Superman film not to feature the major protagonist and evil genius Lex Luthor. Instead we will see Clark battling General Zod (Michael Shannon) as he attempts to assassinate Jor-El’s son to stop him taking over the Krypton council. Obviously Zod doesn’t know that Clark’s far too loved up with Lois Lane (Amy Adams) to bother with silly Kryptonian politics! The Wolverine (July 26) Hugh Jackman’s giving his vocal chords a break after wowing us in Les Misérables and now he’s strapping the bone claws back on. Everybody’s favourite mutant finds himself in Japan for this film, intended to be a standalone movie rather than a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and is set shortly after X-Men: The Last Stand. Director James Mangold has said that since Jean Grey is gone and the X-Men are disbanded, there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for Logan. We’ll be seeing a more vulnerable side to Wolverine in this chapter, as he is physically and emotionally strained, forced to face his ultimate nemesis and get to grips with his own humanity.

COVER S TARS

PhDoubleD Features editor Bethany Fisher talks boobs, brains and Botox with the mother who has written and published five novels and her shameless daughter who showcased THAT tattoo on TV she doesn’t wear makeup because she thinks it’s bad for her face, and never uses foundation or powder products. Though, after spotting the amount of heavy makeup she is wearing I realise she has the exact same dry sense of humour as the Guilty Pleasures team. I am not shy about asking them to dish the dirt on who they love and who they hate out of their cast mates on the show. Bonnie admits she loves fashionista Connie Dieb and ex-model Melissa Poe as they “have the best hearts and are good people to the core.” She says, “By the end of

season two and definitely in season three, you can watch the transformation of our relationships. I don’t get along with any of the others, enough said.” Whitney nods and adds, “I’m with my mum – we get along with the same people and have the same that we don’t care for.” Before the women agreed to do the show, Whitney’s mother Bonnie, was going to go on the 10th series of American Big Brother, but she was cut at the last minute. “I was even flown to Los Angeles, but I think I was cut because I wasn’t nerdy enough to be on the nerd team!” Bonnie laughs. She adds: “However their casting producer called me about Big Rich Texas since I have a daughter, and when I told Whit about it, she was in!” Whitney says: “When my mum called me about it, I was like, hell yes! Let’s do it!” If you are in the minority of people who hasn’t yet seen the show, we are introduced to the girls in a scene where Bonnie is making a deal with Whitney to get

the c-bomb she had tattooed on her foot removed in exchange for lip fillers. I ask them if they always make deals like this, and they both laugh, and admit they love a bit of surgery here and there. “I love Botox!” Bonnie declares. “I would have lines on my forehead if I didn’t get it, and who wants lines? Not me!” Whitney tells me that she is also pro-plastic surgery, “I have done Botox once, but it didn’t even do anything for me” – I’m not

surprised, she is only 24! I ask if she had anything else done and she says that she has only got the lip fillers that they showed her getting on the episode. Tension seems to flare up between the mum and daughter when Whitney admits she wants more surgery – “I want porn star boobs!” she laughs, while looking down at her alreadylarge pair. Bonnie tells me that she has also had a nose job, and a CO2 laser procedure on her face, which she describes, was ‘fabulous’. “That’s all I’ve done, but I will fight ageing every step along the way – I’m just not going to age gracefully, no way!”

“I don't get along with

pon meeting the pair of glamorous starlets, Bonnie Blossman, 43, and her eldest daughter of two children, Whitney Whately, 24, from new reality show Big Rich Texas, I was very worried about what I was getting myself into. The show follows wives and their daughters at the local Dallas country club, and from the first few episodes that have aired on ITV2 this month, the two ‘outcasts’ of the series seem to be in the middle of every argument and at the front of every cosmetic surgeon’s waiting list. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find how real and down to earth they were – despite all the plastic and silicone. They greet me with Hollywood white smiles and bat their thick false eyelashes that hide under their veils of voluminous platinum hair. I immediately compliment them on how glamorous they look, and Bonnie grins as much as her Botox would let her and in a high-pitched Texan accent replies “Why thank you, that is so nice! I spend an hour getting ready, but mostly for a hot bath!” Whitney, who is dolled up to the nines declares that most of the time

and effort on their appearance, you would assume they wouldn’t have much to offer in the academic department. “There are a ton of stereotypes about being educated and what you should look and act like and even more stereotypes about blonde hair and big boobs. I seek to break both of these stereotypes”, Bonnie tells me. She adds “it doesn’t matter what you look like, you are capable of anything”, and she’s right, as she goes on to tell me that she has a PhD in Biology and she has published five journals, along with a whole load of murder mystery novels.

What are their guiltiest

pleasures?

Bonnie: "Harry Potter! I love it so much, although it wouldn't be so embarrassing if I wasn't 43…" Whitney: "I love getting tattoos and piercings!" I can tell from Whitney’s proud expression that she looks up to her mum as a role model. “It shouldn’t matter what you look like, if you’re smart, you’re smart,” she says. Whitney knows this, as she was a state champion cheerleader when she was younger and also studied pre-med at university and is working on her medical esthetician licence as well as just becoming a business partner with an existing alternative fashion line. With all this hard work and success you would think the pair would have no time to do anything else. Whitney tells me that she loves painting guitars and looking at her exposed arms and chest I can tell that she loves being creative, down to the 10 tattoos decorating her body. “I have recently helped my mother make clay monsters for her animations”, she says. Bonnie pipes up: “Yeah I do Claymation for fun! Mountain Dew

paid me $10,000 for a Claymation that I put on YouTube – it was horrible!” she laughs. “But they put it in one of their commercials and it was very popular for a year.” The duo are also musically talented as well. Bonnie says that she has recorded seasonal dance songs as they have a recording studio in their house. “I also play bass guitar in our house band, which is called DrunkLora. My husband plays guitar, my son plays drums, and Whit sings too.” The band is obviously named after their party lifestyles, I tell them that they live a very colourful life. “Yes, it gets loud at my house!” Bonnie laughs. I thank them both for giving up some time from their hectic schedules, and tell them that we will be glued to our screens watching them for the rest of the series – but after stripping down their plastic exterior, I think we’ll definitely see them in a very different light.

hile David Guetta style Balearic dance beats may be flavour of the month in the charts right now, there’s no denying that we all still love a catchy indie chorus. One of the best in the business at producing them (I’m Not Sorry, This Is An Emergency) are The Pigeon Detectives, who release their fourth album, We Met At Sea on April 29. In the two years since their last album, the band have toured heavily, and Matt says this is something that has influenced their latest effort. “We’re a sharp live band and we’ve tried to take the road vibe with us and bring the touring mentality to the album.” A live approach has also been taken with the recording of songs, with mistakes deliberately left in, to give fans a more honest experience as Matt explains to us. “We just wanted to make an honest record, warts and all, rather than an amalgamation of seven or eight good

Matt says the band would like a number one with We Met At Sea, but admits he and the others are just pleased if fans enjoy the experience. “As long as everyone enjoys it and gets pleasure out of it, we’re happy, although I do want to take it around the world. I’m always telling our tour guys, I’ve never been to Australia, Brazil, South America and I want to take it there,” he concedes. With touring playing a large part in the band’s life, it’s fair to say the guys have had their share of ‘once in a lifetime’ trips and experiences, and Matt says the band always try to make the most of being on the road and party wherever they are in the world, whether it’s at

home in Yorkshire or touring abroad. “We’re a rock and roll band, so yeah, that’s half the fun, things happen but we’re five mates who started out together and to tour the world with your four best mates is brilliant.” He adds smiling: “Antics happen and we make it through but we always go back to our roots.” Despite making the most of their fame, the group all have their own down to earth guilty pleasures, with Matt more than happy to dish the dirt on what he and the band as a whole like to get up to in their spare time. “I’m an angler, which is kind of the polar opposite to what it’s like being in a rock band but that’s something that I really enjoy. “I’m also a vegetarian but I do nick some pepperoni off my wife’s pizzas every now and again,” he laughs cheerily. “As a band, we all really like Rufus Wainwright, we’ve followed him from the start and again that’s like the polar opposite of what we do.”

Pop Trumps Remember your childhood days playing Top Trumps? If you want to relive the memories, or if you haven’t heard of the game, then here’s your chance to be crowned top of the pops with Guilty Pleasures’ Pop Trumps! Cut out, collect and keep each week

How to play - All the cards are dealt among the players. (Two or more) - The starting player selects a category from his or her first card and reads out its value. (Eg. Attractiveness 75) - Every other player then reads out the value of the same category from their cards. The best (usually the largest value) wins the “trick.” - The winner takes all the cards of the trick and places them at the bottom of his or her pile. - That player then looks at their new topmost card, and chooses the category for the next round. - Players are eliminated when they lose their last card, and the winner is the player who obtains the whole pack.

Judge away: albums to get excited about Angel - About Time. Out April 8

Fall Out Boy - Save Rock & Roll. Out April 15

After previous chart success with his work on Roll Deep’s number one single Green Light, it’s clear that West London born producer turned rapper Angel can write a club-ready hook or two. Expect plenty of his grime pals including Wiley and Chipmunk to make an appearance on his long-awaited debut, which contains a number of danceable numbers, including the single Wonderful, which reached nine in the UK Top 40.

American pop-rockers Fall Out Boy return from their three-year hiatus to the delight of teenage girls everywhere.. and those of us in our twenties who should know better. ‘The future of Fall Out Boy starts now. Save rock and roll...’ claim the group on their website. It’s a bold claim but you wouldn’t bet against these boys pulling it off, especially after hearing comeback track My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up).

Paramore - Paramore. Out April 8 It’s been a long time coming but Paramore, lead by Hayley Williams, are back with their first album since 2009. The self-titled record is said to sound ‘very visceral and a little bit less locked down and computerized’, according to producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen. We’re not exactly sure what that means but if it’s anything like the catchy first single Now, then we’ll have a happy Guilty Pleasures office.

from wearing staggeringly high heels cost the NHS £29 million last year”

Every time we admire our new shoes for a night out we can all imagine our mums giving us that look of disapproval, whilst saying: “You will end up with bad feet when you’re older!” But do we ever listen? From recent reports from the shoe company, MBT, stating that foot injuries from wearing staggeringly high heels cost the NHS £29m last year, it’s obvious that we don’t. As well as causing pain on nights out (taking your heels off is never an option), constant use of uncomfortable shoes can encourage long-term foot problems. This can range from twisted ankles and ingrown toe nails to bunions and even toe joint replacements and straightening. Each of these problems need medical treatment and end up costing the NHS millions a year. The MBT report also shows that the main culprits in the UK are from Liverpool and Manchester, where 45% of women wear high heels every day. Although we spend most of our time in the Guilty Pleasures office looking at the latest wedges on Topshop’s website (when editor Dave is having a rant somewhere out of view), we all do agree that flats on a daily basis are the most practical. This doesn’t mean that women should never wear heels again. Got aching pains from a growing bunion and considering swapping your five and a half inch Louboutins for flats? Don’t do it. Women should consider wearing them only on occasion, and invest in well-made shoes, rather than cheap and uncomfortable pairs. A Mintel report last year showed that only 27% of people aged 16 and up buy shoes for their comfort. This is incredibly low and showcases how we tend to go for style rather then practicality. So how do the celebrities do it? The reality is that they simply don’t. Victoria Beckham apparently gets severe bunions from wearing high heels everywhere, from picking her kids up at school to even doing the washing up. Just kidding, we all know she doesn’t do the washing up.

Bunions can cost up to £4,000 a time to remove, which adds up to a whopping £10.5m a year for the care system to fork out. Sarah Jessica Parker, star of Sex and the City, became famous for running around the streets of New York in pointy stilettos, and has recently admitted those days are definitely over. After having her feet at an almost vertical angle for most of her acting career, doctors found that she had developed an additional bone that causes her extreme discomfort. That’s almost as shocking as the prices of the shoes she wore. So next time you step out of the door, think about whether or not you need to wear that pair of heels. However don’t ever substitute for kitten heels, they are the mullet of all shoes. Go high or go home – just not in an ambulance.

Sarah Burton’s latest piece for Alexander McQueen has taken a trip back in time with an Elizabethaninspired overload. Think Henry VIII’s wives meets a knitted toilet roll holder with huge hip-laden skirts, bejewelled bodices and Tudor-esque sleeves. This century aged outfit won’t be hanging in our wardrobes any time soon.

It appears hipster designer Jun Takahashi has took inspiration from Alice in Wonderland with this bizarre creation. His fantasy inspired papier-mâché bunny masks (pictured centre) would be great for a fancy dress party. No matter what your age, all of us worry about getting wrinkles, and some will go to any length to prevent them for good. Planet Skincare has created a daily anti-ageing moisturiser, which contains the venom of an Asian snake. The cream mimics the effects of a snake bite, leaving the skin in a state of shock – it’s almost like a natural Botox. Chemicals are then produced to relax and strengthen the facial muscles. Available from £60 from Planet Skincare - it’s an amazing splurge!

VAMPIRE FACIAL

T his treatment is not for the fainthearted. In an effort to rejuvenate her skin, Kim Kardashian has undergone this freaky-looking procedure which involves a large needle drawing blood from your arm. The blood’s then spun in a machine to remove platelets, before it’s injected into your face using tiny acupunture-style needles. The facial is reported to rebuild collagen and smooth your complexion. Results can be noticed immediately, but as the collagen grows they will become more apparent two months after the procedure. Results last up to 18 months. Prices start from £600 at clinics across the UK.

BULL SEMEN HAIR MASK

6

CHOCOLATE BODY WRAP

It might sound a little bit There’s Something About Mary, but bull semen is being used as part of a luxury blow-dry in salons across the US. It’s completely organic and full of protein, which is what hair is made of and lacks when it’s dry. The semen is refrigerated before use and doesn’t smell. The mixture is then massaged into hair after it has been shampooed. Users are then placed under a steamer so it penetrates the hair. Finally it’s blow-dried to leave the locks looking wonderfully soft and thick. Enquire at local salons for more information!

Planet Skincare snake venom face cream

Cupping is an ancient Chinese treatment and totally natural. A practitioner ignites a cotton ball soaked in alcohol and puts it inside a glass cup. The cup is then placed onto the skin to create a vacuum and is left for five to ten minutes before being pulled off. Fans of the therapy say it boosts the immune system, increases circulation giving skin a natural glow, and draws toxins from the body. If you fancy giving it a go it’s available nationwide at any great local treatment centres from £15.

ig London derby and the race for a Champions League place continues as these two great rivals go up against each other. Most Chelsea fans would call this season a disaster, but given the circumstances, and to the neutral - it hasn’t been catastrophic. They’re still in contention for a top four finish and still in the FA Cup, but Rafa Benitez won’t be allowed to get away with a loss at Stamford Bridge against the side that are excelling under a manager who once spent the night in residence at the Chelsea training ground. Andre Villas-Boas (AVB) has ensured something of a rebirth at Spurs, but a trip back to his former residence will prove antagonising and intimidating. With Gareth Bale on fire, AVB’s side will be relishing this trip to Stamford Bridge and we expect they’ll nick the three points.

his weekend marks the opening of the Grand National at Aintree and whether you follow horse racing or not throughout the rest of the year, come April, it’s hard to resist a flutter on the horses. The Grand Opening gets underway this Thursday with a performance from The Saturdays topping the entertainment bill alongside a full day’s race card, including John Smith’s Aintree Hurdle, which boasts a record prize fund of £200,000. The glitz and glamour of Ladies’ Day follows on Friday, one of the most popular events on the social calendar. As is tradition, one lucky racegoer will be selected as the most stylish at the meeting and will win a whole host of prizes. The racing on offer is just as impressive with features that include The John Smith’s Melling Chase and The Topham Chase over the Grand National course in addition to the Handicap Hurdle. Excitement is likely to reach fever pitch come Saturday afternoon. Racing on the day starts with The John Smith’s Maghull Novices’ Chase and Aintree Hurdle, so you have no excuse to not make sure you’re track side or near a TV for 4.15pm and the four mile, four furlong historic 30 fence steeple chase on Aintree’s national course.

Gamepad Unleash your hidden gamer and get stuck into our preview of the DC Comics and Mortal Kombat mash-up, Injustice: Gods Among Us

Batman

VS CYBORG

L

et’s face it; Mortal Kombat is the best fighting game there has ever been on any console, ever. Find us someone who argues differently and we’ll finish them off with a combination of fatalities. So, imagine how excited the nerds in the Guilty Pleasures office were when it was announced that comic book heavyweights, DC Comics, are teaming up with the creators of Mortal Kombat, NetherRealm Studios, to bring us Injustice: Gods Among Us, their second game together after delivering the popular 2008 title, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. Featuring everyone’s favourite DC heroes and villains, including Superman, Batman, The Joker and Lex Luthor, combined with gameplay in both story and battle modes, Injustice: Gods Among Us is the game we’re looking forward to most in the first half of 2013. Developed in collaboration with DC Entertainment, featuring a unique DC Comics storyline scripted by comic book writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, Injustice takes place in a world where the line between good and evil has become seriously blurred and our greatest heroes may turn out to be the things we fear the most. The story centres around Superman’s new world order following the death of Lois Lane and their unborn child, at the hands of the Joker – driving a wedge between the Man of Steel and Batman and causing the world’s greatest heroes to choose a side, the new world or the Dark Knight’s uprising. Players will experience heroes and villains engaging in epic battles on a massive scale, using their surroundings to vanquish their opponents in a number of iconic DC Comics locations. Controlling the most powerful beings in the universe, players can send adversaries crashing through walls, floors and flying through buildings with a combination of devastating moves. Injustice offers something for every type of gamer, straight from the Mortal Kombat copy book with character-based unique fighting styles, realistic ‘roughing up’ of character’s clothing and the double health bar system. Expectation levels for Injustice have been just as incredible as the characters featured and our featured gaming guilty pleasure is clearly destined for good things, sweeping up 20 awards so far including the coveted E3 Game Critics Award for Best Fighting. We think this is set to be most exciting game in 2013. Injustice: Gods Among Us is out on April 19th on all platforms priced £39.99 from all good retailers, not the rubbish ones

CAPTAIN BACKFIRE Q Where did you come up with the name Captain Backfire?

“It’s not actually original, it’s a John Mayer song – I’m a big fan actually. It’s a lyric from the track My Stupid Mouth, ‘I just want to be liked, I just want to be funny, looks like the jokes on me, so call me Captain Backfire.’ I used it way before I took music seriously and it just stuck.”

Q Tell us more about the sound you’re creating?

“Dirty pop is certainly at the heart of it, but I feel like recently, the term has been muddied to mean like, rubbish, y’know, derogatory. It’s a culmination of what’s at the zeitgeist but it’s definitely pop music, sort of like the middle ground between Ellie Goulding and Enter Shikari.”

Q What can we expect from you in the future?

“Exhibit A was an introduction, it was me trying different things, I wanted to make a big noise, something loud but the next stage is gonna be stripped back, more acoustics. Who knows? At the moment, I’m just looking to promote Exhibit A and get out there more.”

Q If you could make a track with anyone, who would it be?

“A couple of years ago, it’d have been Justin Timberlake, but he’s massive now! Most of the people who I thought were guilty, turn out to be relevant now! It’d have to be Craig David then, like old Craig David, back when he was ‘Craaaaiiiiggg Daaaavid’.”

Q Finally, we think you should share your guilty playlist with us...

“I’m a really big fan of songwriting, even if it’s a crap song, the structure attracts me, so I’d have to say I like Taylor Swift at the moment – the way she writes her songs. Ke$ha’s another one, she’s really bad but the structure of her stuff is so clever, I can’t help but sing it.”
