TIME WARP: THE 70’S

Sawyer Magazine / 2

Letter from the Editor: About Rocky Horror Halloween szn yet again! And there's no movie more offbeat, campy, ludicrous, erotic, intergalactic, time-warped and straight up fun than the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Originally a stage show by Richard O’Brien (who appears as Riff-Raff in the film), the production parodies B-movies and sci-fi flicks in the form of a high-energy musical. The movie version was shot in the UK and became an instant cult success. It pretty much invented the ‘midnight movie,’ particularly at the Waverly in New York City. Throngs of people crowded into the theater: heads full of memorized quotes and arms full of props. ‘Shadow cast’ productions, or showings where actors simultaneously recreated the scenes live, also became popular. ‘Rocky Horror’ symbolizes freedom. Of personal expression, sexuality, the list goes on. People found themselves suddenly and deeply relating to a movie on subjects that were barely discussed in the mainstream. Midnight showings brought people together back in the 70's and they still continue to bond marginalized outcasts daily. I mean…there’s something to be said for that kind of magic! See for yourself right here + have a happy October!

Science Fiction Double Feature

‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ introduces itself as a spoof on b-movies (commercial yet low budget movies traditionally paired with a larger movie in a theater ‘double feature’) in its opening song: ‘Science Fiction Double Feature.’ The lyrics are dripping with references to cinematic underdogs, and we looked them all up so you don't have to.

Michael Rennie was ill the day the earth stood still but he told us where we stand and Flash Gordon was there in silver underwear Claude Raines was the invisible man Then something went wrong for Fay Wray and King Kong They got caught in a celluloid jam Then at a deadly space it came from outer space And this is how the message ran: Science Fiction Double Feature Doctor X will build a creature See androids fighting Brad and Janet Ann Francis stars in Forbidden Planet At the late night, double feature picture show I knew Leo G. Carroll was over a barrel when Tarantula took to the hills And I really got hot when I saw Janet Scott fight a triffid that spits poison and kills Dana Andrews said prunes gave him the runes and passing them used lots of skill But “when worlds collide” said George Pal to his bride “I’m gonna give you some terrible thrills” Like a Science Fiction Double Feature Doctor X will build a creature See androids fighting Brad and Janet Ann Francis stars in Forbidden Planet At the late night, double feature picture I wanna go to the late night, double feature picture by RKO to the late night, double feature picture in the back row to the late night, double feature picture

A 1933 horror movie based on a novel of the same name. The invisible man appears only at the end of the movie covered in bandages, just like we first see Rocky Horror himself.

A 1951 sci-fi flick starring Michael Rennie. His role was turned down by none other than

A 1936 serial film about three earthlings who travel to another planet to fight an evil emperor

A popular actress in the early 30’s, she also appeared in Directly referenced by Frank-NFurter in ‘Don’t Dream It, Be It’

A film by The greatest monster movie of all time. RHPS replicates it’s iconic imagery when Rocky carries the body of Frank up an RKO tower.

1932 horror/mystery film

a 1956 sci-fi film based on Shakespeare’s ‘the Tempest’

1956 sci-fi movie starring Leo G. Carroll about a well-intentioned experiment that goes wrong and causes animals including, you guessed it, tarantulas to grow to extreme proportions. Directed by Jack Arnold, who also directed

Andrews starred in 1957 British horror film “Night of the Demon”, based on “Casting the Runes,” a 1911 novel. Often paired as a double feature with “The Revenge of Frankenstein,” a reference to RHPS (a scientist creates a sentient being).

A 1951 sci-fi movie is about a star that goes off course and threatens to destroy Earth

A sci fi film (1953) about an alien spaceship that crashes to earth, and many people suddenly become possessed by alien powers. RHPS gives a nod to this one when Frank makes Brad, Janet, Rocky, and Columbia to perform for him. “The Day of the Triffids” is a sci-fi movie based on the novel of the same name. Triffids are deadly, fictional plants with odd behaviors, such as walking and communicating

A film distributor that rose to prominence with movies themselves and boasted big talent like Fay Wray. RKO produced classics like ‘Citizen Kane” and “Its a Wonderful Life” Although it declined in the 1980’s, it came back a decade later and is the oldest movie studio still in existence.

What to Watch This Month

the good place (2016-) Although I was initially skeptical of ‘the Good Place,’ I ultimately couldn't resist (and forfeit my rep as a loyal Kristen Bell fan). The only thing that disappointed me about this show was that it seemed to go by all too quickly. It was smart, funny, and explored morality in interesting yet lighthearted ways. Catch season 2 now on NBC!

big mouth (2017-) Big Mouth throws a dirty, animated lens over the most awkward time in every person’s life: puberty. The show, created by Nick Koll, is partially based on his own experiences. Pretty much every voice actor on the show is a comedian at the top of their game, including big names like John Mulaney, Jenny Slate, Jordan Peele, Maya Rudolph, and more.

the outcasts (2017) It’s pretty easy to throw ‘The Outcasts’ into the cliché teen rom-com genre, but I found myself loving this one more than most. Rather than trying to become one of the upper-class, popular teen queens, the protagonists instead overthrow the hierarchy all together, making loser the new cool. Fans of Victorious will be excited to see Victoria Justice and Avan Jogia back onscreen together.

how to behave (2017-) Model Barbie Ferriera is just about as real as it gets. In her brand new Broadly show, she explores outdated etiquette and challenges gender norms in the dating scene with her own special brand of humor and charm. Expect vibey intro cards, cool n’ clean cinematography, and of course, lots of Barbie. Check the show out on Go 90 here.

white gold (2017-) If you've been on the hunt for an explicit tv show about salesmen that’s set in the 80’s, has a kickass soundtrack, breaks the fourth wall, and stars a Gossip Girl alum, then, well…I’ve found it.

i-d on go90 (2013-) i-D's Go 90 channel offers a library of short, beautifully shot fashion films with a focus on contemporary culture. Titles include: “Girl Skaters,” a series called “Real American Beauty,”Bowie’s Berlin,” and “Summer of Love: London.” Catch all the films right here.

diy: leaf prints by lauryn oliver step one: choose leaves that are still fresh and pliable. large ones with raised, textured veins are best step two: select a piece of paper for your leaf print, and lay down some newspaper underneath to avoid making a mess. step three: stain the surface of the leaf with paint. I happened to use nail polish because I had some great fall colors! the print will come out better with a thinner coat of your medium. step four: gently flip the leaf paint side down onto the paper. make sure to press it down to get the whole outline. step five: peel the leaf from the paper. be gentle and peel slowly so you don’t smudge the paint. repeat with the same leaf and different ones, using all sizes and shapes to mix it up. step six: let dry step seven (optional): draw or write over the print. i wrote in my favorite fall poem, but you could also do a quote or just doodle over it.
