VISITING ARTIST WORKSHOP 5135. The Beauty of Moving Metal - Cold Forging for Jewelry with Ben Dyer Beautiful, elegant jewelry forms can be created from simple rod and wire by forging. Non-ferrous metal is coldforged using a simple planishing hammer and polished metal stake. Ben will provide demonstrations and lecture on hammering technique, work-hardening, temper, annealing and tool prep. Use nu-gold, red brass or other non-ferrous metal in round wire or rod form, shaping with pliers and your hands, then moving metal with the gentle force of the hammer. Lots of hands-on practice creating sample forms and working toward finished pieces. Supply list mailed prior to the workshop. Location: Metals Studio Instructor Ben Dyer

684. An Introduction to Darkroom Photography Without a doubt, learning darkroom techniques is one of the best ways to improve your photography skills and create a photographic legacy for your family. Create images that come to life right in front of your eyes! Whether you are a beginner, old pro, or looking to reconnect with your darkroom roots, this class is for you. Become familiar with darkroom equipment and processes and print from your own black and white negatives. Class includes use of the darkroom during the class duration. Film SLR cameras required. If you do not have a film camera, you may borrow one of ours.

606. Digital Photography I This first course will introduce you to the most fundamental controls on your digital camera. Learn both in class and through take-home assignments about the basic controls of your camera, exposure, ISO, shutter speed, aperture, and composition essentials. We will also discuss how to upload your images to a computer and basic file storage. We will spend half the class in lecture and half the class photographing and practicing techniques. This course is recommended for anyone who has used their camera but still needs help getting better images and understanding basic camera functions. Summer Sawtooth Photo League The Sawtooth Photo League offers a chance for current Sawtooth photo students and instructors to meet and stay connected once class is over; continue education by offering critique, tips, and support from other photographers; suggest new photographic themes to explore; suggest classes to take for further education; enjoy guest speakers to inspire our photography; participate in photography-themed movie nights and photo walks. The Sawtooth Photo League will take an active part in documenting life in downtown WinstonSalem, keeping the Sawtooth School and our downtown arts district connected while documenting the changes taking place in our downtown area. We usually meet the third Saturday of each month, though our dates may vary. 647. Digital Photography II A perfect follow-up to Digital Photography Level I (class 606). This next class will give you a greater understanding of your camera’s more advanced features. Learn about white balance, creative uses for aperture and shutter speed, metering modes, lens choice, and advanced flash settings. We will also discuss file management and basic computer photo editing such as cropping and color adjustment. This course is recommended for anyone who is comfortable with the basics of their camera, but wants to go beyond the essentials and learn more creative uses of their advanced functions. It is designed for cameras that have the ability to adjust aperture and shutter speed. We will spend half the class in lecture and half the class photographing and practicing techniques.
