EL HASSAN YOUTH AWARD

The El Hassan Youth Award (HYA) Scheme was derived from the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, established in 1956, which spread to several countries in the world under different titles. The ABS Co-Curricular Programme is proudly associated with the Duke of Edinburgh International Award delivered through the three different age specific awards of Al Sawsanah Award, Sarvath El Hassan Award and El Hassan Youth Award. The El Hassan Youth Award Scheme started in Jordan in 1984 as a pilot programme at ABS. The HYA provides a significant opportunity for Jordanian youth between the ages of 14-25 years to enroll in selfchallenging, educational and non-academic programmes that focus on service, skills, expeditions and physical recreation. These awards springboard from the co curricular foundation to push students to become more responsible, self-challenging and aware of the world around them while developing intellectual, creative and physical abilities. Meeting the minimum standards of achievement for each of the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, qualifies the participants for the Award in the form of a badge and certificate presented on behalf of HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal. Please email osama_almaridi@abs.edu.jo for more information on the requirements of each level of the award.

12

SARVATH EL HASSAN AWARD In 1996, the Sarvath El Hassan Award Scheme was established in the Middle Years School to recognise and further encourage students' involvement in co-curricular activities. Through service to the community and the development of physical skills and creativity, the programme seeks to develop a well-rounded student.

Requirements for Students

In order to qualify for the Sarvath El Hassan Award, satisfactory completion of the following requirements must be met over a period of three years in Grades 6, 7 and 8. • Students are required to provide evidence for participation in any activities outside ABS (pictures, emails, videos, certificates from center). • A good behavioural record approved by the Head of School. **For more detailed information, please email osama_almaridi@abs.edu.jo.

STALLIONS ATHLETICS

(An Inclusive Sports Programme) The strength and success of the ABS Stallions Athletics Programme stems from student-athletes who live and breathe the AL-TARBIYEH core values of the ABS. Whether at practice or representing their school during tournaments in the Amman Athletics Conference (AAC) or the Oasis Athletics Conference (OAC), our athletes are coached to compete with character. They learn to both lead and support teammates, to respect their opponents and to persevere through challenges on and off the field, track or court.

Starting next year, Grades 6-12 student-athletes will be able to be a part of a team either all year, or have the choice to commit for only one term. Registration will be open at the beginning of Term 1 and again before Term 2. This allows students the opportunity to explore other sports, the arts or other aspects of the co curricular programme.

Important Notes:

• Registration to try-out will be through the DoubleFirst Engage Parent Portal prior to start of each term. (Click for Term 1 Calendar) • Due to COVID-19 Protocols, students may choose one team sport and one individual sport only. • Although we will try our best to not change training days/ times, they may change slightly after the tryout period. Late practices (5:00 - 6:30pm) may also be added. • The ABS Athletics Programme is inclusive and therefore the try-out period is considered a trial period for the student to try the sport and not a “try-out”. • Once students have committed to a team, no more than 3 unexcused absences per term are permitted in order to remain on the team.

Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the work of the New York-based United Nations. A country is assigned to each student delegate who then assumes the role of Ambassador and debates agenda items which are mostly taken from the ‘real’ United Nations. The MUN simulation is widely practiced by schools and universities in most countries. It is truly a global network of student conferences where delegates chair debates and control the overall organisation of the conference. Students learn and practice a variety of skills from public speaking, parliamentary debate and argument. A successful MUN delegate must also approach an issue with academic rigour and be able to work constructively as a member of a team with conference delegates who, for the most part, they have never met before.

17

Junior MUN Club Who: When: Term: Cost Involved:

Junior Model United Nations club is an activity for Grade 6 and 7 students held in school, where students simulate the real United Nations and debate resolutions on regional and global issues. Students will be required to undertake research at home and attend five training sessions. Participation is mandatory for all Grade 6 and 7 students who would like to attend local and international conferences beginning in Grade 8.

AMMUN offers students valuable career paths, where a delegate can rise to become AMMUN’s Secretary-General or hold another executive position in a premier MUN conference in the region. Such leadership positions are highly regarded by universities as they demonstrate commitment to a programme over a substantial length of time and the maturity of accepting responsibility to see a project through to its conclusion. All students are welcome to participate and there are a variety of roles from journalist and photographer, to organisers and administration staff, as well as those who debate as delegates and chair the committees.

Students attending international conferences are highly encouraged to apply for student officer positions, prepare thoroughly and be proud ambassadors for AMMUN.
