CRESCENT HEALTHCARE Comprehensive Approach to Patient Care Walking into the waiting room at Crescent Healthcare, it is hard to imagine being in a doctor’s office. The waiting room is welcoming and bright, emanating a cheerful spirit around the building. It is almost like walking into a friend’s living room. This has been the goal of owners Lindsay Howard and Laurie Miller-Turner. Going to the doctor can often times be an intimidating, long and tedious process. While trips to the doctor generally are not fun, Lindsay and Laurie believe that they should be as pain free and enjoyable as possible. Lindsay, a Nurse Practitioner, and Laurie, a Physician Assistant, recently bought Crescent Healthcare from Dr. Harry Allen III, their former longtime boss. This makes their practice only the second in the state to be owned and operated by a Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant team. Both Lindsay and Laurie aspired to work in the healthcare field starting at a young age. Lindsay’s mother battled cancer at the age of 40. Seeing her mother go through such an ordeal peaked Lindsay’s interest in healthcare. Growing up, she volunteered at McLeod Hospital in the candy striper program. There, she learned more about the field and decided that is where her passion laid. Lindsay obtained her BSN from Clemson

University, and then went on to get her MSN with a focus in family nurse practitioning from the University of South Carolina. Laurie always knew that she wanted to take care of people and make a difference in their lives. She also participated in the candy striper program in middle school. In high school, Laurie enrolled in a college careers class at McLeod. There, she learned more about the medical field. In college, she worked for Dr. Conyers O’Bryan. He taught Laurie about patient care and was a big inspiration in her decision to become a physician assistant. Laurie attended Francis Marion University and then went on to become a physician assistant at MUSC. Before buying Crescent Healthcare from Dr. Allen, Lindsay and Laurie worked for him in his practice. Lindsay worked there for 13 years and quickly became close with Laurie, who joined the team in 2010. Dr. Allen asked Lindsay and Laurie about purchasing the practice a couple years later, in 2013. Both women had always dreamed of owning their own business, so they jumped at the opportunity. While they might have very different personalities, Lindsay and Laurie are very much on the same page when it comes to patient care and their business. They believe that a comprehensive

approach to patient care is important. Instead of just focusing on, and treating a singular issue and sending a patient on their way, they believe in a approach that takes care of a patient head to toe and helps prevent singular issues from arising. This approach is particularly important in the older population of patients. They also believe in educating their patients on the best ways to stay healthy. Crescent Healthcare plans to open up a weight management center in the coming year so patients can receive additional counseling along with medical care. Crescent Healthcare recently moved to a new office on Coit Street. Lindsay, Laurie and their families poured time and effort into making the new location the best it can possibly be for patients. Lindsay’s husband, Richard, and Laurie’s husband, Cliff, personally worked on the building restorations. Lindsay and Richard’s children, Grace, age 12, and Hunt, age 9, have become very close with Laurie and Cliff’s children, Nancy Adeline, age 6, and their twins, Miller and Lily, age 4, during this time. The personal touch on the business makes patients feel right at home, while being treated with the highest quality of medical care.
