In Living Color Beautiful and vibrant, the Achilles tang (Acanthurus achilles) adds a splash of color wherever it swims. This tropical marine surgeonfish is native to the Pacific Ocean and is black in color with vivid orange, white, and blue streaks along its fins and tail. Reaching around 10 inches in length in adulthood, the Achilles tang enjoys feeding on benthic algae, but will eat brine shrimp when in captivity. Although gorgeous to look at, Achilles tangs are not suggested for home aquariums, as they can be nervous swimmers with a tendency to “pace” back and forth and enjoy unobstructed swimming spaces. The Achilles tang does best in turbulent waters with lots of surface movement, which translates to a higher saturation of oxygen in the water. The sturgeonfish is known as pāku‘iku‘i in Hawaiian and is sure to brighten anyone lucky enough to see it in the wild.

LOCAL VIBE Sweet Lei

Plumeria, or melia, is a popular flower for lei for its sweet fragrance, beauty, color variation and abundance. White plumeria are most often seen though they can be pink or red and include yellow and orange hues. Also called frangipani, they are a favorite in perfumes and bathing products. With their elliptical, pointy petals, they are as beautiful as they are pungent with velvety texture that makes them feel sensuous to the touch. It takes approximately 50 blossoms for a single, 40-inch lei. The plumeria lei will last for one day. To maintain the freshness of the lei, sprinkle water lightly, wrap in a damp paper towel and keep cool.

Living Aquarium Tidepools are home to beautiful and interesting marine invertebrates such as crabs, sea urchins, cowries, sea stars, sea snails, sea cucumbers and small fish. Trying to spot different varieties of animals that live in the crystal clear pools is a fun time for the whole family. When exploring the many tidepools, keep in mind your safety as well as the safety of the fragile animals. Look more than you touch and always replace the animal gently to their original place in a timely manner. Replace rocks just as you found them since many creatures live beneath the rocks. Don’t turn your back on the ocean—you never know when a wave will crash into you, or worse, sweep you out to sea. Protect your feet and beware of potential danger from poisonous sea creatures. It is against the law to break and take live corals or rocks covered with sea life. If exploring with children, pick up a fish ID card to make the activity educational as well as more enjoyable, plus the card tells you which animals are harmful. 16

Bitter Fruit While driving on the Queen K (Hwy 19), keep an eye out for the noni tree. Noni (no-knee) is an Indian mulberry, a small tree in the coffee family, with large, dark green, shiny deep-veined leaves. The plant produces small white flowers, fruits year-round and is touted for its many medicinal uses. The pale yellow fruit is also known as cheese fruit for its pungent odor and unpleasant bitter taste. The fruits are eaten by Southeast Asians and Australian Aborigines raw with salt or cooked in curry. In the past, Hawaiians obtained dyes for cloth and medicine from many parts of the tree. The ripened fruits were applied to draw out pus in an infected boil, while the leaves and roots were used to treat menstrual cramps and urinary difficulties. Nutritional analysis completed by the University of Hawai‘i reports that the noni fruit has excellent levels of carbohydrates, dietary fiber, protein, niacin and vitamin C. Its abundance in Hawai‘i can be contributed to the plant’s tolerance of saline soils, drought conditions and secondary soils and therefore, found throughout the Hawaiian Islands in a wide variety of habitats including volcanic terrains, sandy shores and lava-rich coasts. You can also find noni juice in a variety of local stores.

In Hawaiian, it means clever, intelligent, wit, expert; someone who is filled with common sense. So if someone calls you akamai, it would be a compliment. It’s like being at the top of your game, the leader of the pack. If I didn’t know the answer to a question, I would find someone who was akamai.

The State Bird Nēnē, the Hawaiian Goose, is the rarest goose in the world and is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It evolved from the Canada goose, and most likely arrived around 500,000 years ago. The once almost extinct bird gets its Hawaiian name for the soft honking calls it makes. The nēnē has strong toes with reduced webbings as an adaptation to the rocky lava flows on which it breeds and lives. The nēnē is unique from other waterfowls in that they mate on land. They breed between August and April, the longest breeding season among other goose. The female builds her nests in the concealment of bushy pockets of vegetation and lays one to five eggs. The female incubates her eggs about 30 days while the male is on the lookout for predators such as the mongoose.

MINDFUL TRAVELER

Be Reef Safe Each year, an estimated 4,000 – 6,000 tons of sunscreen ends up in the ocean contributing to the destruction and death of live coral that serves as a habitat, and even food product, for sea creatures. Even those wearing sunscreen but not getting into the ocean need to be mindful of the products they wear because when rinsed off in the shower, chemicals in sunscreen end up in the groundwater, eventually making their way to the ocean. To battle the destruction of our coral reefs from chemicals, Hawai‘i became the first state in the United States to ban the sale of sunscreens containing coral-harming chemicals such as oxybenzone and octonoxate. These chemicals affect the coral by causing the coral to ossify or harden into bone. This process causes deformity, decreased mobility and even death of the coral. To play a part in ensuring our coral reefs remain healthy while still protecting your skin from the sun’s rays, be sure to look for “reef-safe” products and opt for sunscreens that use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. To learn more on reef-safe sunscreen, visit the National Park Service’s website at nps.gov/puho/learn/nature/protectyourselfprotectthereef.htm.

Welcome to paradise. Help us keep it this way.

ALOHA

HAWAI‘I

32

The land you're standing on is very special.

For millions of years, forces of nature have worked to create and shape these very islands, as each one slowly, but surely, rose from the sea. Welcome to the island of Hawai‘i, also known as the Big Island, the newest and youngest of the Hawaiian Islands. Here, you can witness many facets of awe and wonder as you explore valleys carved eons ago or newly formed coastlines, all waiting for you to discover their immense beauty, their historical and cultural importance, and their relevancy to our island’s vibrant future. Bigger than all the other Hawaiian Islands combined, the Big Island is an island of contrasts and contradictions. Maunakea looms as our tallest volcano at 13,803 feet, but extends another 19,700 feet below sea level making it the tallest mountain in the world when measured from the base. (Mount Everest is the highest mountain.) Yet, only a hundred feet or so shorter, Mauna Loa is considered the world’s largest volcano, both in terms of mass and volume. Kīlauea, which until recently was one of the world’s most active volcanoes, is not even the youngest. Right off the southeast coast of the Big Island lies Lō‘ihi Seamount, a submarine volcano slowly growing larger, and poised to make its emergence above the sea surface in only a mere hundred thousand years, give or take. Whatever type of adventure you’re looking for, the Big Island delivers in spades. If you’re looking to step foot into some of the world’s best and most colorful beaches, with your choice of white at Hāpuna Beach State Park or Manini‘ōwali Bay (also known as Kua Bay), black at Punalu‘u, grey or green sands at Papakōlea, you’ve come to the right place. If you’d rather explore massive

peaks, dense jungle rainforests, subterranean lava tubes (Thurston Lava Tube in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park), dry, arid deserts, and almost all types of landscapes in between, the Big Island has it. Thrill-seekers might prefer catching a big wave or soar high above the trees on a zipline over stunning waterfalls. For adventurers who prefer less adrenaline inducing activities, gently float down an old cane field irrigation ditch in a tube in Hawi. And nature lovers can look for sightings of native birds in a peaceful forest. Whatever you’re seeking, whether its relaxation and respite on a gorgeous beach or unforgettable adventure, the Big Island is an extraordinary playground for all. Everything about the Hawaiian culture, traditions, history, language, food and, of course, genuine aloha is truly what makes this place so singular. Learning about King Kamehameha, the great unifier of all the Hawaiian Islands, and his journey from a young chief to commanding statesman, is a historical significance felt greatly on the Big Island, his birthplace. The Big Island is home to one of the most diverse populations in the entire United States. Along the way, you’re sure to experience the unique culture of many ethnic groups of people who have made Hawai‘i home over generations. From the ancestors of former sugar cane workers, including Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese and Korean residents, to more recent immigrants such as Anglo-American, Marshallese and other Polynesian Islanders, each culture has brought its own flavor here. Taking the time to see how they’ve blended into a beautiful mélange is one of the joys of the different experiences found here.

inding over rugged lava fields and along the breathtaking coastline of Hawai‘i Island, Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail is nearly 175 miles long. The corridor runs from ‘Upolu Point on the island’s northern end down the Kona Coast, before curving around South Point and meandering to the eastern boundary of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, and all the way to Puna. Ala Kahakai’s trail system is at once a network connecting Hawai‘i Island’s shoreline trails to the mauka (mountain) and makai (ocean) trails and a bridge connecting the present to both the past and future. For centuries, Hawaiians living in different ahupua‘a have trekked by foot on these carefully planned, built and maintained trails. In ancient Hawai‘i, each island was split into wedge-shaped land divisions called ahupua‘a. Running from mauka to makai, each ahupua‘a contained all necessary resources for functioning as a self-sufficient community. Here, families lived, promoted traditions and instilled the value of caring for one another and the ‘āina (land). As you traverse Ala Kahaki’s the coastal trail, listen and you just might hear whispers of a civilization that not only settled upon this dry, exposed land but thrived here. Ancient Hawaiians chose to call the barren lava fields home because of the presence of cool, brackish water springs— proof there was enough of an underground water source to sustain their everyday needs. Also, a factor in this choice was a spirit they felt in every tree and rock, in the sand and surf of the bays and in the trade winds that swept across the island. Touched by the trail’s mana (power), Hawai‘i’s coastal settlers embraced this spirit. They lived so harmoniously with the land that it became part of their existence, making a separation between nature and culture nonexistent. When on the trail, be open and you too may sense the same spirit.

35

36

pōhaku (petroglyphs) are scattered everywhere and believed to identify the border between the ancient kingdoms of Kona and Kohala. While we can only speculate as to what the ki‘i pōhaku mean, following in the footsteps of the ka po‘e kahiko (people of old) who created the carvings may widen our window into their world. The adage “the journey is the destination” holds true when it comes to traveling on the “trail by the sea.” As you hike the various sections of Ala Kahakai, consider the crushed lava crunching beneath your feet a reminder that in 1801, Hualālai erupted, and lava flowed from the island’s third most active volcano to the ocean below. On a clear day, drink in the beauty of Kohala Mountain, an extinct volcano that is about one million years old —old enough to have experienced and recorded the reversal of the planet’s magnetic field 780,000 years ago. With wide open skies above you, expansive views of the ocean and stretches where only the seabirds interrupt the tranquility and spiritually significant structures along the way, Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail is an ideal hike for anyone seeking time for self-reflection and communion with nature and the sacredness of the trail’s spirit. Remnants of Hawaiian places of worship like the Pu‘uoina Heiau at Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park and the Pu‘ukoholā Heiau near Spencer Beach, as well as St. Peter’s Church-by-theSea on Ali‘i Drive and the Hokuloa Church in Puakō are also found along the trail. Ala Kahakai passes through four national park units, including Pu‘ukoholā National Historic Site, Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park, Pu‘uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park and Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. And for families, the national parks are a perfect place to access the trail. Start your time on the trail by stopping by the park’s Visitors’ Center to pick up an Ala Kahakai brochure and a Junior Ranger book. Be sure to visit one (or all!) of the parks and complete the ranger activities with your kids. And if your family are Passport to Your National Parks’ book holders, you can get your books stamped at each of the national parks.

It is perhaps this prevailing spirit that moved Queen Lili‘uokalani to approve the Highways Act of 1892, which still defines the role of trails in Hawai‘i’s communities today. Lili‘uokalani deemed all trails built before 1892 be open to the public as property of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Throughout the years, Ala Kahakai has faced many challenges, including development on or near the trail corridor. In some instances, developments have even been built over the trail. Also taking their toll are erosion and lava flows. Recognizing the need to preserve the historic trails and protect natural areas adjacent to the trails, Hawai‘i Island-based non-profit E Mau Na Ala Hele has been advocating for the protection, preservation and perpetuation of the trails for decades. In 2000, the non-profit succeeded in attaining federal designation of Ala Kahakai as a National Historic Trail. Since then, Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail has been administered by the National Park Service. “This shoreline trail is unique in that it models the intersection of cultural perpetuation, environmental stewardship and values-based economic development,” says Aric Arakaki, Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail Superintendent. “To walk on and maintain the trails is a traditional cultural practice.” When you travel on Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, you’re on more than a recreational path. You’re moving along historically significant routes, passing important natural areas and ecosystems with indigenous plant and animal species, anchialine pools, caves, ecological zones and lava formations, all of which represent fundamental components of Hawaiian culture and call for preservation. While there are dozens of spots to begin your Ala Kahakai experience, a popular starting point is the Waikoloa Petroglyph Preserve. Ancient Hawai‘i crosses paths with modern Hawai‘i in the Waikoloa Beach Resort, where you can pick up the Kīholo-Puako trail, which is also known as the Kingdom Road. Part of the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail system, Kīholo-Puako is a 3.5-mile out-and-back trail leading to one of the island’s best-preserved petroglyph sites. Thousands of ki‘i

In addition to national parks, Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail connects six state parks, 11 county parks, over 200 ahupua‘a and wahi pana (storied landscapes) while offering a deeper understanding of Hawai‘i Island’s natural resources, heritage and ceremonies. Ultimately, the trail overcomes disparity by connecting us to each other. “Ala Kahakai is a network of trails that is part of the movement of people across the planet. We all have this in common. All our ancestors traveled along trails, by land and sea, and that’s how we got to where we are today. Ala Kahakai celebrates our diverse backgrounds while recognizing the commonalities that unite us,” Arakaki points out. He also reminds anyone traveling the coastal corridor to respect Ala Kahakai and those you share the trail with. Many lineal descendants still use the system to reach the shore where they fish, pick ‘opihi and harvest sea salt, much like their ancestors have done for generations. To ensure that communities connected by Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail are safe, no matter who uses the trail, a law of the Hawaiian Kingdom remains in place to this day. Kānāwai Māmalahoe, or Law of the Splintered Paddle, is a precept in Hawaiian law enacted by King Kamehameha I in 1797 to provide protection for travelers along the trail. Establishing the King’s claim that all who traversed the trails were guaranteed safe passage, and that no one woman or man should be harmed when traveling from place to place, the law is enshrined in the state constitution and encourages present day use of the trail system. Additional laws protect the Waikoloa Petroglyph Preserve and other archaeologically significant sites of Ala Kahaki. Out of respect, and for your own safety, stay on the trail and in the designated viewing areas. The lava rocks and sun can prove treacherous at times, so travel across the uneven terrain with care

40

and wear sturdy shoes that you are comfortable in. Be prepared by bringing water and a snack, since there’s a good chance you will want to spend more time on the trails than you planned to. And don’t forget your sunscreen! No matter which section of Ala Kahakai you choose to visit, go with good intentions and tread lightly. Never take any rocks, sand, shells or plants from the trail, and always take home anything you brought onto the trail. Respect Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail’s living history by taking the time to read markers along the way and learn about Hawaiian culture with humility. And heed any signs about park and trail closures at dusk and dawn. Above all, plan and remember that although Ala Kahakai can be accessed at several sections along the island’s coastline, it is not a single, continuous trail at this time. For an immersive, safe experience, consider participating in Ala Kahakai Trail Association’s events, which include “Along the Ala Kahakai Trail,” a talk story series starting at Hokuloa Church, and the Kaunamano Community Hike. You can also give back by volunteering at the next Waikapuna Community Volunteer Day and supporting organizations such as E Mau Nā Ala Hele and Ala Kahakai Trail Association. The Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail system was and will always remain dynamic. It serves as a path to a sacred connection to Hawai‘i and the ancestors whose spirits live on through the land. As you travel the trails, make the most of these connections and let this gentle wind remind you what a precious gift life truly is. Learn more about Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail at nps.gov/alka/index.htm. Learn more about Ala Kahakai Trail Association at alakahakaitrail.org and E Mau Nā Ala Hele at emaunaalahele.org.

REEF REVIVAL Seizing Corals of Opportunity

I

f you hear the sound of a conch shell echoing across the gentle waters of Kahuwai Bay on the Kona Coast, it might signify the members of the Ka‘ūpūlehu Marine Life Advisory Committee (KMLAC) and scuba divers with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) are gathering on the golden sands for a Kanu Ko‘a Coral Restoration event, much like the one that unfolded in late October 2023. To prepare, as well as honor kūpuna and recognize place, the inaugural Kanu Ko‘a (Planting Corals) event began with kani ka pū (blowing the conch) and oli (chant). After the opening ceremony and protocol, divers and Native Hawaiian lineal descendants of Ka‘ūpūlehu boarded the wa‘a (double-hulled canoe) Kini Kini, and set sail for nearshore coral reefs. Divers descended to the reefs to collect corals of opportunity from the sandy seafloor. These are corals that broke off the reef due to boat anchors, strong waves or the hands and feet of snorkelers and divers. In Kumulipo, the Hawaiian creation chant, ko‘a (the coral polyp) was the first organism to emerge from pō (darkness) and everything else was born from that ko‘a. As part of KMLAC’s first coral restoration event, the ko‘a once again emerged from the depths of darkness into the sunlight, carefully lifted to the surface in crates before being submerged in coolers of ocean water. With the precious ko‘a safely aboard, Kini Kini returned to shore. Starting at the shoreline and stretching up the beach, the crates of ko‘a fragments were passed carefully from one volunteer to the next until reaching tables set up with specialized saws. There, each ko‘a’s bottom skeleton piece was cut off, leaving the top tissue layer for outplanting. Despite its rock-like appearance, ko‘a is an animal related to anemones and jellyfish. Coral reefs are the structures formed from calcium carbonate secreted by hard ko‘a. Although cutting an already fragmented ko‘a on all sides into a smaller shape may seem fruitless, it actually accelerates tissue growth and reef recovery when outplanted. Taking advantage of hard ko‘a’s ability to heal, outplanting is a method that binds fragments to the reef, enabling the pieces to reproduce and grow into mature colonies. Once fragmented, the trimmed ko‘a were placed into coolers on Kini Kini’s hull and transported back to the reefs. There, divers returned the ko‘a to the sea, using a special, nontoxic sealant to secure fragments to the reef. Outplanted in an array pattern, the fragments will fuse together and grow by as much as 12 centimeters a year.

In Kumulipo, the Hawaiian creation chant, ko‘a (the coral polyp) was the first organism to emerge from pō (darkness) and everything else was born from that ko‘a.

Mālama the reefs In the Hawaiian language, ka ‘ulu pūlehu means “the roasted breadfruit.” The site of a historic settlement, Ka‘ūpūlehu is currently home to the Four Seasons Resort Hualālai and Kona Village. It’s also a stateapproved marine reserve, making it an ideal location for outplanting and creating a resilient back-up in the face of coral bleaching. Coral bleaching happens when environmental stressors cause ko‘a polyps to expel algae living in their tissues—algae that is necessary for the reef’s health. While they don’t look alive, healthy ko‘a reefs are a living barrier, protecting the shorelines of Ka‘ūpūlehu and other coastal communities from floods, waves and storms. Kanu Ko‘a is the first step in determining the best methods for restoring these natural ko‘a buffers surrounding Hawai‘i Island. The KMLAC-TNC team also plans to install an in-water nursery table to grow ko‘a from fragments, monitor the growth rates and health of the planted ko‘a and analyze which method of planting helps ko‘a grow best. “You’ve got to remember that the reef is living! If we don’t do something to set up reefs to survive in the face of climate change, we will fail future generations. If you really love the ocean, be part of the solution,” said Vern Yamanaka, KMLAC member and TNC Trustee. WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP PROTECT AND RESTORE THE KO‘A

• Only wear reef-safe sunscreen. • Never touch or walk on corals. • Support sustainable fishing practices. • Practice safe boating by anchoring in sandy areas away from reefs. • Support local community efforts by donating to TNC Hawai‘i.

Keepers of the sea Thanks to the ecological management systems designed by Ka‘ūpūlehu’s kūpuna, the coastal fishing grounds of the area were once teeming with ko‘a, i‘a (fish), he‘e (octopus), ‘opihi (limpets) and ula (lobster). As modern systems encroached on the traditional management systems, ko‘a reefs began to suffer. Two decades of research beginning in the early 1990s revealed that the Kahuwai Bay area lost over 50 percent of its ko‘a. By 2015, the bay’s ko‘a cover declined by 44 percent, and the abundance of i‘a and other food sources dropped 75 percent in turn. Today, Hawai‘i’s nearshore reefs and waters support more than 7,000 marine life forms, 25 percent of which are only found here. But climate change, land-based pollutants and overfishing continue to threaten the ko‘a reefs, the marine life they support and ancestral lifeways. Despite these challenges, KMLAC’s communitybased restoration efforts can improve the health and resilience of our reefs and people. In 1995, the committee was established to care for the Ka‘ūpūlehu and Kūki‘o shoreline areas’ marine resources. KMLAC now consists of local families with ancestral ties to the area, businesses and advocacy groups and landowners who work to restore fish populations and ko‘a reefs through collaborative management with the State. “Restoration is an important tool in the fight against reef decline, but its adoption in Hawai‘i and the Pacific is relatively novel,” said Joe Pollock, Ph.D., TNC senior coral reef resilience scientist. “By anchoring this project in science and culture while prioritizing learning and knowledge sharing, we can enhance local reef benefits while disseminating the insights needed to successfully scale up reef restoration throughout Hawai‘i and beyond.”

WONDROUS WATERFALLS Head Out on a Journey to Discover Hawai‘i Island’s Epic Gushers story KRYSTAL KAKIMOTO images ANDREW RICHARD HARA

B

irthed by molten lava and chiseled by millennia of rainfall, the rugged terrain of Hawai‘i Island creates the perfect backdrop for exploration and adventure. Taking just half a day, this course will take you through quaint country towns, to spectacular waterfalls and locations imbued with rich cultural history. Starting your day in Waimea, head east along Hawai‘i Belt Road, which will take you through a rural area of farmland interspersed with homes. As you progress along the route, you’ll notice more trees cropping up alongside the roadside indicating that you are nearing the historic town of Honoka‘a. At the first major intersection, turn left onto Pakalana Street and find Tex Drive-In, a local institution known for its deep-fried malasadas. Opened in 1969, Tex Drive-In’s specialty is malasadas, a fried pastry that originated in Portugal. After frying, the yeast dough is tossed in sugar and is best served while still warm. At Tex Drive-In, you can stock up on their square-shaped malasadas that are served “plain,” just coated in sugar, or filled with custard, chocolate, or haupia (coconut) cream. While at Tex Drive-In, you can also grab a cup of Kona coffee, hot chocolate, or POG (Passion Fruit, Orange, Guava) juice before hopping back on Hawai‘i Belt Road to get to your first waterfall. Once back on Hawai‘i Belt Road, a thirty-minute drive will bring you to one of the most magnificent groups of waterfalls on the island. Umauma Falls, translating to “constantly flowing,” is a unique cluster of three cascading rapids that create a tiered grouping of waterfalls. Once on the property of The Umauma Experience, you can drive along a paved road to a lookout centered in a lush, tropical garden to view the waterfalls. Over 14 waterfalls can also be seen from above on the zipline tours that are offered. Through a series of nine long lines, suspension bridges, and treetops, guests can zoom through the air at speeds of up to 65 miles per hour high above the flowing waters. The zipline tours last between one-and-a-half to three hours, depending on the group. If you opt for the selfguided walking tour of the gardens and falls, allot at least 45 minutes to stroll their grounds. The Umauma Falls Experience; 31-313 Mamalahoa Hwy., Hakalau; (808) 930-9477; Open daily; umaumaexperience.com.

‘AKAKA FALLS

52

When you are ready to get to your next destination, head back to Hawai‘i Belt Road traveling south through the former plantation town of Hakalau, located along the Hāmākua Coast. After a ten-minute drive, be on the lookout for Honomu Road. This road will take you inland to the sleepy town of Honomu with a strip of eclectic stores housed in original, wooden buildings. The end of Honomu Road connects with ‘Akaka Falls Drive which will take you directly to ‘Akaka Falls State Park. After parking your car, look for the trailhead leading to the falls located just off the parking lot. A paved walking path will take you on a 0.4-mile loop footpath meandering through wild orchids, bamboo forests and low-lying ferns. Along the path, you will first see Kahūnā Falls, a cascading, 100-foot waterfall. Just beyond Kahūnā Falls is the magnificent ‘Akaka Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in the state. The 442-foot waterfall plunges into a steam-eroded gorge and can be seen from multiple points along the walking path. The waterfall was named after the Chief of Honomu Village, a strong and handsome warrior named ‘Akaka. He resided in the area around the waterfall with his faithful wife. One day, his wife departed to visit her family and Chief ‘Akaka used this time to visit his sweetheart, Lehua, who lived on the north side of the gulch. His wife returned home unexpectedly and rather than hurry home, ‘Akaka traveled to the south side of the gulch to visit his other sweetheart, Maile. His wife called to her husband who continued to flee but she was able to track him down due to the fragrance emanating from the sweetgrass that adorned his neck. Once home, ‘Akaka was ashamed of deceiving his loyal wife and decided the only thing he could do was throw himself over the cliff. His wife followed, trying to stop him from jumping, but she was too late. Legend tells that if you visit ‘Akaka Falls on a still, moonless night, you can hear his loyal wife who continues to call for her husband. ‘Akaka Falls State Park; End of ‘Akaka Falls Road (Highway 220); Open daily from 8:30 am – 5:00 pm; dlnr.hawaii.gov/ dsp/parks/hawaii/akaka-falls-state-park/ .

53

When you are ready to head to the final waterfall of this road trip, retrace your path until you are again on Hawai‘i Belt Road. Traveling further south, you will pass through the towns of Pepe‘ekeo and Pāpaiko‘u. The four-mile stretch between these two towns is renowned for the green foliage alongside the highway, so if weather permits, be sure to unroll your windows and take in the fresh, country air. Once you enter the town of Wainaku, near Hilo Bay, look for Waiānuenue Avenue which will take you through a business district of Hilo. After a five-minute drive, veer right onto Rainbow Drive, a twolane road that leads directly to Wailuku River State Park. Visible from the parking lot, the width of the waterfall at Waiānuenue (meaning rainbow seen in water) is one of its major draws. During rainy seasons, the width of Waiānuenue (Rainbow) Falls can measure around 100 feet, making it one of the widest waterfalls in the state. The water of this fall originates from the Wailuku River and takes a dramatic, 80-foot plunge over a lava cave that is said to be the home of Hina, the mother of the Hawaiian demigod, Māui. The park is open year-round during daylight hours but the most popular time to visit Waiānuenue Falls is on sunny mornings when the mist reflects creating rainbows in all directions. For some, a visit here is a quick, fifteen-minute stay to view the waterfall from the lookout located just off of the parking lot. Others set aside about thirty minutes to walk a short, 0.1-mile out-and-back hike to an additional lookout for a better view of the falls. Rainbow Falls at the Wailuku River State Park; 2-198 Rainbow Dr., Hilo; Open daily during daylight hours; dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/parks/ hawaii/wailuku-river-state-park/. Once you are done viewing Rainbow Falls, make your way back to Waiānuenue Avenue and head makai (towards the ocean). Turn right onto Komohana Road and take this to Saddle Road and turn right. Carved from lava rock in the 1940s, Saddle Road traverses the width of Hawai‘i Island. Stretching for over fifty miles, Saddle Road is known for many distinctive attributes such as numerous one-lane bridges, a rugged landscape of lava rock, and an elevation gain of over 6,000 feet resulting in low-hanging fog. As you coast from Hawai‘i’s East to West sides, you will travel between Mauna Kea, an inactive volcano on Hawai‘i island and the highest point in the state, and Mauna Loa, one of the largest active volcanoes on the planet. Saddle Road will end at Hawai‘i Belt Road, which leads you back towards Kona or the Kohala Coast, making your circuit complete and concluding your day exploring Hawai‘i Island’s rugged and varied terrain.

59

Waimea, meaning “reddish water,” was named after the color of its streams. This very land was also known as “Hulilauali‘i” or “calabash of many chiefs,” for in ancient Hawai‘i many ali‘i (chiefs) lived here and Waimea was the site of many fierce battles. During Kamehameha’s rise to power, the Waimea plains were the training ground for his skilled army and thus integral to the warrior king’s unification of the Hawaiian Islands. Some of Waimea’s deep soils were reserved for royal agricultural sustenance, and watersheds supported several thousand native Hawaiians, many of whom farmed kalo (taro), bananas and sweet potatoes in walled irrigated fields. In 1793, the few cattle gifted to King Kamehameha by Captain George Vancouver forever changed the scene. The cattle, which the king declared kapu (forbidden), flourished into thousands over the next 20 years. Plundering villages and farms—even endangering lives—the cattle needed to be controlled, so the king enlisted Sailor John Parker Palmer to shoot herds of cattle that roamed the countryside. The king also allowed Parker to supply meat, tallow and hides to islanders and visiting ships. Parker quickly grew into a respected man of influence and would eventually build the largest ranch in Hawai‘i and the once largest ranch in the United States— Parker Ranch—which boasted nearly 500,000 acres at its height. When the kapu was lifted and horses were introduced to the island, the foundations for the ranching industry were laid. In 1833, famed Mexican vaqueros arrived to teach Hawaiians ranching and horsemanship. Parker Ranch, headquartered in Waimea, became the heart of cattle country. Not only did Hawaiians learn the ways of riding, roping, saddle making and leather tanning, but they also embraced their mentors’ colorful traditions of music, cuisine, family values

and hard work. And so emerged the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy, translation of español) culture. Even before the mainstream recognition of the American cowboy and the Wild West, generations of paniolo had been wrangling longhorn cattle on the island. Today, Waimea’s paniolo heritage is well preserved, and Parker Ranch continues as a leader in the community. The land is still home to ranchers and farmers who, alongside many entrepreneurs and artisans, form a thriving community, allowing visitors much to explore and leaving those who just pass through with regret. May Waimea’s breathtaking vistas, abundance of good eats, lovely boutiques, and rustic allure lasso you in. Start your visit at Parker Square and saddle up at Waimea Coffee Company. Sip on a handcrafted drink from local estate beans. A favorite pour is The Force cortado with comforting notes of white chocolate and coconut. Pair that with the decadent flourless chocolate cake, and you’ll be ready for some shopping. Just a few steps away at Sassafras, find exquisite hand-fabricated solid sterling silver and gold jewelry. Each “Sassy” collection piece is wearable art inspired by Hawai‘i’s flora, fauna and stories. Next, step into Bentley’s Home Collection, an enchanting little gift shop with whimsical keepsakes and island home decor from local makers. For more shopping fun, head across the street and sing your way to Uila Records, a boutique record store selling new and used vinyl records. Your jaw will drop as you flip through the impressive selection of old-time favorites and contemporary albums. The Hawaiian music section, which includes slack-key guitar, a style born out of paniolo culture, will surely delight. Whether you’re browsing for nostalgia or part of the vinyl revival, you’ll leave with good vibes only.

With beaches just minutes away from Waimea, check out the curated selection of swimwear next door at Surf Camp Shop. Besides elevated beach essentials, you’ll find quality outdoor gear, insightful books and loads of sustainable goods. By now, if you’re starting to feel a little chilly from the weather, make your way to the adjoined café to grab a warm drink and treat yourself to some of the prettiest toasts. You can’t go wrong with either the ricotta toast with fresh fruit, the smoked salmon toast, or the loaded avocado toast, but save room for the rest of the amazing spreads Waimea offers. Waimea boasts some of the finest regional cuisine and farm-to-table restaurants. At Merriman’s, enjoy a locally sourced award-winning menu showcasing the island’s freshest fish, seafood, meat and produce. The cozy restaurant’s vaulted ceilings, dimmed chandeliers and wooden decor define rustic elegance. Indulge in the succulent beef tenderloin sourced from a local ranch or savor vibrant fish tacos complemented with the signature mai tai topped with honey-passionfruit foam. Another phenomenal place to taste authentic island flavors is FORC, where Chef Allen Hess serves up seasonal, innovative dishes grounded in tradition. For a comforting Hawaiian meal, ask for the house laulau (varied protein wrapped and steamed in taro leaves) with garlic fried rice. Waimea will surely deliver an exceptional upcountry culinary experience. There’s also a bounty of casual options to help you refuel. Driving through town and the tantalizing scent of kiawe (mesquite) hits you. Follow the smoke to GJ’s Huli Chicken, a roadside, take-out-only operation serving the juiciest and

huli huli (rotisserie-style) chicken and ribs. Locals and visitors patiently wait in line, even in the misty cold, as the iron trailers continuously turn rows of sizzling meats. Secure a generous “plate lunch” from the weekend-only operation that’s been in Waimea for nearly 25 years. Like grilled meats, pizza tastes better in the country, so grab a slice at James Angelo’s Underground Pizza, where East Coast-style thin-crust pizza reigns. Most popular is the spinach and garlic white specialty that marries nicely with local Hamakua mermaid mushrooms. With a clear view into the creation space, watch in awe as the chef masterfully crafts your pie from scratch before popping it into the hot oven. If this leaves you looking for a nice red to pair with your pie, head nearby to the Kamuela Liquor Store. Known locally as simply “Alvin's” after long-time proprietor Alvin Wakayama, this unassuming Waimea institution hides an impressive selection of wines, spirits and gourmet cheeses. For a sweet indulgence, head to Patisserie Nanako, a Japanese-French bakery that whips up the most irresistible desserts. From the Milk France, a mini baguette piped with a sweet milk buttercream, to the raspberry ladybug, a rich chocolate mousse encased in a raspberry glaze, everything on display is perfectly sweet, made with passion, and too pretty to eat. Eat it anyway. The breads and pastries are made daily in small batches to ensure the highest quality. You may need a break from all the good eats, so here are some recommendations. Wander through Ulu La‘au (Waimea Nature Park). The serene 10acre natural preserve welcomes you to reflect and learn about native plants and trees. Discover the

state’s largest collection of varied color ‘ōhi‘a lehua, the first tree that springs up from a lava flow, symbolizing resilience and growth. Spot its blossoms as you stroll along the Waikoloa Stream flowing through the park. If you prefer relaxing indoors, consider reserving a chair at Enjoy Fashion Salon, where hairstylists create pure art by bringing together the timeless tradition of Italian style and cutting-edge techniques. Waimea is home to many talented artists, even in the beauty realm. An urban timber salvage company also sits right in the heart of Waimea. Kamuela Hardwoods takes pride in reclaiming and salvaging wood that would otherwise have been burned, chipped or thrown in our landfills. In their showroom, discover beautiful hand-carved artwork, ethically sourced painted bull skulls, laser-engraved charcuterie boards, koa jewelry boxes and other goods that will fit in a suitcase. Just perusing the selection of exotic slabs is therapeutic, and you’ll be inspired to take a piece of nature’s artwork home. If you’re here on a farmers market day, prepare for more treasure hunting. The Waimea Town

Market at Parker School is alive on Saturdays, where you will find artisan bread, Waimea-grown strawberries and local beef jerky. The variety of ethnic foods prepared on the spot satisfies any craving. Also, look for Hawaiian life paintings by renowned artist Kathy Long. On Wednesdays, the Midweek Farmers Market at Pukalani Stables hosts a wide selection of food vendors and food trucks. Come here to get your Egyptian falafel or grilled cheese fix. Gather farm-fresh produce, tropical flowers, island-grown chocolate and pearl-strung jewelry. The old stallion station also houses the Paniolo Heritage Center, a little museum that brings the history of the paniolo to life. Against all the things to taste and gather, Waimea’s natural beauty is what visitors remember most. No wonder this coveted land with rich heritage and royal ties is considered more precious than gold. Experience a different Hawai‘i you may not know existed. Waimea’s evergreen landscape, ever-nourishing soils, and ever-giving community await you to create everlasting memories.

HOT SPOT

Miller & Lux Hualālai story KRYSTAL KAKIMOTO

Miller & Lux, the latest dining experience by celebrity chef Tyler Florence, infuses the flavors of a traditional steakhouse with inspiration from the islands. Opened in December 2023, the Hualālai Resort location is his third Miller & Lux restaurant that aims to delight with its high-quality steaks, robust raw bar and farm-direct vegetables served in an intimate, club-like atmosphere.

66

A South Carolina native, Tyler first began working in kitchens as a dishwasher but was quickly enamored with the energy of the kitchen. He graduated from the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson & Wales University and moved to New York to gain experience while honing his skills under premier chefs including Charlie Palmer and Rick Laakkonen. The buzz around this young chef continued to grow as he joined the Food Network in the late 1990s. Since joining the network, Florence has captivated millions with hit shows like Food 911 and The Great Food Truck Race, authored over seventeen cookbooks, and is a two-time James Beard Award nominee. Florence’s inspiration for his first Miller & Lux location originated from the story of two passionate immigrants, Henry Miller and Charles Lux. Miller arrived in the United States with just $6 in his pocket and was lured to California by news of the Gold Rush. After learning the trade of butchering and gaining acclaim in his field, he opened his first butcher shop and was renowned for his real pork sausages. In 1857, Lux approached Miller about jointly purchasing a large herd of American cattle, and their fruitful partnership was born. Over the coming decades, they expanded their business becoming the largest cattle ranchers in America. Their legacy is represented at Miller & Lux locations by their celebration of the good life in relaxed luxury settings.

Florence’s newest location incorporates influence from its local Hawaiian surroundings and showcases a menu of inventive dishes alongside top selections of fresh game including Miller & Lux’s famous 45-day Prime Dry-Aged Tomahawk Steak. “Four Seasons Resort Hualālai is one of my favorite resorts, and I am honored to have the opportunity to bring a new experience to this already incredible beachfront property,” says Chef Tyler Florence. “Miller & Lux Hualālai will seamlessly blend the signature menu we created for our San Francisco location with the local ingredients found in Hawai‘i.” An excellent start to your meal is their Steak Tartare which features hand-cut dry-aged Hawaiian beef, capers, rich egg yolk, and tarragon mayonnaise. And for a Chef Tyler signature experience, the Miller & Lux Caesar for Two is another great start. Their tableside preparation includes Spanish anchovies and Meyer lemons which coat Hirabara Farms lettuce grown in Waimea. For entrées, many guests gravitate to their outstanding selections of steaks that include an 8 oz. Wagyu Skirt “Steak Au Poivre” served with Mâitre b’Butter, a green peppercorn sauce and truffle french fries. Another entrée that does not disappoint is their M&L Burger which starts with a patty created from a blend of dry-aged beef topped with Mt. Tam triple cream brie, bacon jam and pieces of crispy onions served alongside truffle french fries. 67

68

with kiwis, mangos, dragon fruit and strawberries placed atop frangipane and served alongside pink guava sorbet. Chef Florence and his team work to truly integrate the bounty of the islands into their menu by working with local farmers, ranchers and producers to incorporate ingredients sourced from across the state. This dedication to local ingredients is important to help deliver a true flavor of the islands and also shows Chef Florence’s commitment to sustainable practices. While it would be easy to import ingredients and mimic the menus of his other locations, Miller & Lux Hualālai boasts a whopping 75% of ingredients being sourced from Hawai‘i. Miller & Lux Hualālai blends the refined dining experience with a comfortable atmosphere that encourages guests to relax and enjoy an exceptional meal in an unbeatable atmosphere. In addition to their fabulous cuts of beef, Miller & Lux offers non-beef entrées to satisfy all guests’ preferences. One must-try on their menu is their Rosette Ravioli which is filled with lemon ricotta and served on a Waimea tomato passata. The dish is dusted with nutty parmesan cheese and fresh garden basil resulting in a bright, refreshing pasta dish. Another classic entrée to the Miller & Lux menu is their French Dover Sole prepared with capers, Meyer lemons, and brown butter that is finished tableside for a spectacular plating. Once you have selected your entrée, the sides and sauces will take each dish to the next level. One side that highlights the beauty of local produce is the Ali‘i Mushrooms which are tossed in a savory miso glaze and garnished with black garlic. There are three additional sauces on the menu—green peppercorn bordelaise, creamed horseradish, and a fresh tarragon béarnaise—but a real treat is to have your entrée finished with the Burgungy Périgord Truffles, a half ounce of this delicacy shaved to your liking. The restaurant also features a thoughtfully curated selection of wines, seasonal cocktails and desserts to end your meal on a high note. One delicious dessert that reflects the flavors of the islands is their Hawaiian Fruit Basket Tart loaded

CULINARY Q&A

Chef Mark Libunao story KRYSTAL KAKIMOTO

For Chef Mark Libunao, the past few years have been a whirlwind as he became one of the hottest rising stars on the Hawai‘i culinary scene. As Executive Chef of CanoeHouse at Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection, he takes the helm of one of the most iconic restaurants in the state, working tirelessly to honor the restaurant’s reputation as a premier restaurant in Hawai‘i while imbuing the menu with his international palate and talent for artistic plating.

70

Where were you born and raised? I was born in the Philippines and migrated to Hawai‘i when I was sixteen. I already graduated high school in the Philippines but had to go back to high school when we moved to Hawai‘i so I could get a U.S. diploma. While attending Ka‘ū High School, I participated in their high school culinary arts program and, after graduation, I attended the Culinary Arts program at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. Growing up, what role did cooking play in your family? Everyone in my family loves to cook! We mostly cooked Filipino food and would even slaughter our own goats, pigs and cows for celebrations. At home, my mom did most of the cooking but my dad cooked too. By learning and cooking with my family I realized my passion for cooking and how much I wanted to become a chef. What were some of your first jobs in the culinary industry? After I got accepted to the Culinary Arts Program,

I applied for a position in the kitchens of the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. I was a part-time prep cook and also worked on the buffet line as a prime rib carver. After graduation, I worked on the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America and was exposed to many different cooking techniques and flavors. How did your path lead to CanoeHouse? It started during the pandemic when I was working in Las Vegas. I had been working there for almost six years at the Waldorf Astoria and the Mandarin Oriental. I realized I wanted to be closer to my family and return home. There was a Food & Beverage Director position at Mauna Lani and I applied for that. The next day, the Executive Chef of the CanoeHouse called me up and talked to me about becoming his Sous Chef. It took about two months but I was able to return home and take on the Sous Chef role at CanoeHouse. Eventually, I became the Chef de Cuisine at HāLani, also at Mauna Lani. During that time, the former Executive Chef of CanoeHouse moved on and I was offered the position.

71

What makes CanoeHouse stand out from other restaurants? First off, it would be the people: our staff, our ‘ohana (family). My cooks work hard from opening to closing and I think it shows in what we deliver to our guests. Our servers have an attention to detail and their level of service makes dining at CanoeHouse unique. I would also say our ambiance is unbeatable. How do you get inspiration to create a new menu item? I pull a lot from my previous experiences. On the cruise line, I was exposed to so many types of cooking—from Japanese to Chinese to Brazilian. When I create a new recipe, I usually look at the main ingredient and then think about different cooking techniques or flavors that pair well with the ingredient. What are some of your favorite local ingredients to work with? I love working with Blue Ocean Mariculture’s Hawaiian Kanpachi—this is one of our signature dishes at CanoeHouse and it is served broiled. I also love sourcing ingredients from Waimea like the fresh goat cheese. I love working with and supporting our local farmers! What are some ingredients that you will always have in your home kitchen? Shoyu (soy sauce)! I always have a lot of spices and

72

sauces like vinegar, fish sauce, shrimp paste and curry sauce. I make my own spice rubs that I use for grilling and I always make sure to have proteins like shrimp, pork and beef ready to cook. What would you do on your perfect day off? Well, my perfect day off would actually start the night before! I would marinate a ton of meat and the next day, I would spend the whole day with my family barbequing at the beach. We would wake up early, load up the truck with the grill, and spend the day together relaxing and catching up. What are some professional goals that you have for 2024? One of my goals is to host a Chef’s Table where I butcher ingredients with the guests. Then, I would cook and present the entire meal, even describing the wine pairings. I also want to host wine dinners where I can create brand-new menus for the guests. And I am looking forward to our Culinary Classics event. It’s a three-day event held here at the Mauna Lani over Labor Day weekend. The event brings together local chefs with celebrity chefs from the mainland and we celebrate food and the culinary arts in Hawai‘i. For Chef Mark, the future looks bright as he continues to breathe new vibrancy into the menu of CanoeHouse while maintaining the traditions that the restaurant was built upon.

Hawaiian Hotties Husband and wife team, Rob and Lynn Rostau are bringing the heat and adding spice to the lives of many with their passion project, Hawaiian Hotties. Their locally owned and operated company specializes in spicy treats and creative ways to capture the flavor of Hawaiian chili peppers. These small peppers range from 1.5 to 2 inches in length and rate between 20,000-200,000 on the Scoville scale. But the cult following of these peppers comes from their unique flavor profile that begins with a savory, slightly sweet, taste that blossoms into a spicy warmth that lingers on the palate. For those looking for a snack with moderate heat, reach for their Lava Pop. This is a spicy twist on their classic kettle corn made with locally grown Hawaiian chili peppers infused with coconut oil. For a spicier treat, their Fire Pop will have all your senses ablaze! And for an unexpected delight reach for their Sweet Heat, a product created by the couple’s 8-year-old daughter. This perfect blend of sugary heat is great sprinkled on fresh fruit or used in a smoothie for an extra kick. They also offer a Hot Salt that is a great seasoning for fish or steak and an excellent rim adornment for your margaritas. Their products are available throughout the island of Hawai‘i and also on their website. Be sure to check out their products if you’re looking to “spice up your life with peppers from paradise!” Learn more at hawaiianhotties.org.

Beachy Buzz Looking to kick your beach vacation up a notch? The Fredrico, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel’s signature cocktail, is ready to help elevate your time relaxing by the pool or sandy beach to the next level. Known island wide (and well beyond), this classic cocktail combines Bacardi Light Rum, Jack Daniel’s Whiskey, as well as tropical juices, blended to perfection and served with a wedge of pineapple as a garnish. These ingredients produce something not overly sweet, not too fruity, just an impeccably nice and refreshing drink to guide you through a warm day with your toes in the sand. More colloquially known as the “Freddy,” this cocktail has been satisfying beach goers for over 30 years, and doesn’t show signs of slowing down any time soon. You could follow an account dedicated to the Freddy on Instagram, but we recommend trying one for yourself to see what all the buzz is about. The Fredrico cocktail is served at Hau Tree, located within the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, located along the Kohala Coast. To learn more, visit maunakearesort.com/dine/casual/hau-tree

This national historical park known as Pu‘uhonua O Hōnaunau served as a safe haven in times of war and was also a place of cleansing for kapu (law) breakers. Wooden images of Hawaiian native ki‘i (gods) and heiau (temples) on the sacred grounds of the beautiful and serene beachfront sanctuary make this a must-see historical park. Because ancient Hawaiians believed that if the spirit was not fed then it would drift away, kāhuna and others left food offerings in the temple. Today with the revival of Hawaiian customs, you may see offerings of food on the lele (tower) at Hale O Keawe. Pu‘ukoholā Heiau CULTURAL SITE on the KOHALA COAST

This quiet and peaceful park allows visitors a glimpse into traditional Hawaiian religious practices and the fascinating life of the most revered Hawaiian king. Built by King Kamehameha to honor his family war god, Kū and to fulfill the prophecy of uniting the Hawaiian Islands, it tells the vibrant tale of the unification of the Hawaiian Islands during one of the most important periods in Hawaiian history. Thousands of men, including Kamehameha himself, worked for nearly a year in the construction of this temple. It is said that the workers formed a long human chain from Pololū Valley, over 20 miles away, to Pu‘ukoholā. They passed lava rocks down this human chain, one by one, and used them to skillfully build Pu‘ukoholā Heiau without the use of any bonding agents such as cement or mortar.

About 12 miles north of Kawaihae, Lapakahi State Park features the remnants and partially rebuilt structures of a 700-year-old fishing village named Koai‘e. At this 262-acre park, you can take a short self-guided tour and gain an understanding of what daily life was once like in this village. This area was inhabited until the late 1800s. Historians are not completely sure why it was abandoned, but a popular theory is that the water table decreased and minimized access to fresh water in this location. In addition to providing a glimpse into life in ancient Hawai‘i, Lapakahi offers stunning views of the coastline and ocean. Lapakahi is free and open from 8am to 4pm daily, with the exception of state holidays. Brochures are typically available when you enter the park.

A thatched shrine built and restored on an artificial island in Kamakahonu (Eye of the Turtle) is guarded by wooden images (ki‘i). King Kamehameha I settled here in 1812 and maintained his royal residence until his death here in 1819. King Kamehameha dedicated Ahu‘ena Heiau, a temple of prosperity, to Lono, god of fertility. Significant history was made on the royal compounds when Liholiho, who became King Kamehameha II, dined with the great queens Keōpūolani and Ka‘ahumanu, breaking one of the most rigorous kapu. This bold act brought on the abandonment of the ancient kapu system and opened the door to Christianity.

Pololū Valley & Lookout SIGHTSEEING & HIKING in NORTH KOHALA

Pololū Valley might not be very well known outside of the residents of the Big Island; however, it is a majestic sight. Located in North Kohala at the end of Highway 270, it winds past the quaint town of Hāwī. Just past 28-mile marker, you will round the corner and suddenly be treated to a breathtaking view of Pololū Valley—the same view that previous generations have enjoyed for centuries, and one of the most spectacular panoramic views on the Big Island. The walk down to the valley floor is a rocky hiking trail less than a mile long and ends at a black sand beach. The views make the hike worthwhile, however, the hike up can be strenuous. It’s advised that you wear sturdy shoes and use caution, especially if the path is wet. You won’t find any amenities or lifeguards on the beach, but you will get a rapturous glimpse of nature’s beauty at its finest.

The steep and narrow road down the valley is currently closed to visitors, but the lookout offers breathtaking views without breaking a sweat. Rainbow Falls WATERFALL in HILO

The charming old-school island town of Hilo, seemingly frozen in time, has many waterfalls that are not only easy to find, but require just a short walk to view. Waiānuenue Falls, famously known as Rainbow Falls, is one such waterfall that stretches about 80-feet long and is probably the most easily accessible on the island—just a short walk from the parking lot and only a few minutes from downtown Hilo. The falls' name was inspired by the multi-colored prisms seen in the mist of the falling water and comes from ānuenue, meaning rainbow, and wai meaning water. The water spills over an ancient lava rock cave that is said to be the home of the Hawaiian moon goddess, Hina. Depending on the amount of rain, the waterfall sometimes descends at a trickle or it could be gushing over the edge with many ribbons after a storm.

Located within ‘Akaka Falls State Park, this is one of the most highly recommended waterfalls to visit on Hawai‘i Island. The pathway to reach 442-foot tall falls is about 0.4 miles long and takes you through an enchanting rainforest, as well as to a smaller 100-foot tall waterfall, Kahuna. Several legends of varying details surround ‘Akaka Falls. The premise, however, is that a Hawaiian chief named ‘Akaka lived in the area and was said to be having an affair. When his wife discovered this, he somehow ended up falling to his death, creating ‘Akaka Falls. The trailhead is located just off the parking lot. The paved route, which includes multiple steps in places (not wheelchair accessible), makes an easy to follow loop offering stunning viewpoints of the two waterfalls. Parking is $10 per car.

Named for the utility pole marker, this is a lovely white sand beach with crystal clear blue water that is great for swimming and snorkeling due to its sandy bottom and gradual drop off. Snorkeling is great around the rocky outcropping inside the bay, but the best snorkeling is in the southern portion where depths range from 10 to 30 feet. Mostly the water is super clear, but periodic freshwater invasion by an intermittent stream can ocassionally reduce surface visibility. Exercise caution during the winter months due to high surf. There is plenty of shade and restrooms and showers are available. Located off Hwy 19, turn onto Puako Beach Dr.,then take the first right onto Old Puakō Road; beach parking will be on your left.
