Trump lawyer talks potential presidential pardons, tax returns and NY probes Within hours of declaring victory in fending off a 22-month investigation into Russian collusion, President Donald Trump's personal attorney Jay Sekulow told the ABC News podcast "The Investigation" that the president's legal team has already begun gearing up for vigorous new legal battles in Washington, D.C., and New York. Sekulow exuded confidence in laying out the legal team's prospects in both venues. "They're not done," Sekulow said of efforts by federal investigators in New York to look into potential campaign finance violations surrounding hush payments made to a woman who alleged she had an affair with Trump. "But I am of the view that that's not going anywhere." And on Capitol Hill, where Democrats have been ramping up efforts to obtain copies of his tax returns, Sekulow said he believes the president's team will succeed in blocking those efforts because Congress lacks "a legitimate legislative purpose in asking for the tax return." "What is the investigative purpose for them to have his tax return?" he asked, rhetorically. "They're not investigators." "What is their legislative purpose in asking for the tax return and how he spent his law firm money?" he continued. "Are they going to pass the Donald Trump Tax Reform Act?" A team of four attorneys has been guiding the House Ways and Means Committee, which has the authority to request the IRS documents from the Treasury Department. They have been actively crafting what they hope will be an "air-tight" legal strategy to compel the president to hand over 10 years of his personal tax returns, working on the assumption their request will be challenged by the courts, a senior Democratic aide told ABC News earlier this month.

Trump's refusal to make his tax returns public -- a move that broke with decades of tradition -- was a Democratic rallying cry during the 2016 campaign. Since the 1970s, most presidential candidates have made their tax returns public. Trump's returns have remained a persistent fixation during his presidency, with his critics viewing the filings as a potential road map to possible conflicts of interest and tax evasion.
