Off-line audio visual systems are frustrating and costly. SavilleCARE will help to actively reduce equipment failures and provide a speedy repair and support service should a breakdown occur. All servicing and repairs are undertaken at our own specialist service centre by highly experienced and qualified bench engineers. We pride ourselves on delivering an efficient repair service with a three month guarantee.

Our repair process is to ISO9001:2000 accreditation. This is constantly monitored to ensure compliance whilst we actively seek to improve our service capability. SavilleCARE Loan Equipment Should your own equipment require removal for repair under manufacturer’s warranty, our service includes provision of a loan replacement, avoiding disruption and downtime. If necessary, we arrange collection of the faulty item and delivery and installation of a suitable replacement.

Following a competitive tender and consultation process Saville AV was awarded a nationwide service and maintenance contract. The SavilleCARE team undertake comprehensive equipment health checks and preventative maintenance visits twice a year across the company’s nationwide estate. As a result of the first series of visits, the team were able to

All equipment and systems are now accurately recorded and tagged along with warranty and service details entered onto a central database which is accessed by the service technicians. The unique VC helpdesk, part of the extensive SavilleCARE range of services, proved invaluable in resolving numerous legacy problems across the various video conferencing systems in use across the network.

Following consultations with the operations team at WTW, a dedicated point of contact was provided to ensure continuity of service levels. Once a request has been received the SavilleCARE operations manager updates the central database and allocates the appropriate technical support. Everyone in the team is able to access the status of the support response via the database, ensuring adherence with the SLA whilst providing the most efficient service possible.

With the emergence of collaboration as a fundamental way of working, there is pressure for these devices to be able to multi-task, with video being a major requirement. The ability to stream high definition video to and from the humble touch panel has found great favour in many systems.

Perhaps driven by the consumer world, the need for high quality, graphical user interfaces (GUI’s) has high preference and the ability to swipe intuitively through a set of menus is a given. Users are looking for high quality, branded graphics and screen resolutions have improved to meet these expectations.


Rise of the tablet With a proliferation of affordable, high resolution tablets, the inevitable question of “do we need a dedicated touch panel?” arises. The answer is maybe not. Major manufacturers now embrace this option with a set of readily available apps that allow users to control their AV system from a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet. These manufacturers see this as a complementary technology to their own user interfaces. The benefits can be numerous and highly tailored to end user needs. An example could be where the touch panel is installed and set up to allow preset control over a room’s AV system. Technical staff however can run the same interface over their mobile device but with extra functionality, allowing them to set up and modify the presets. A look at the emerging future of the meeting room by Ian McMurray There’s little doubt: huddle rooms – or huddle zones or huddle spaces as they’re also known – are a significant phenomenon from corporate headquarters to local government to education. According to Wainhouse Research, there may be as many as 50 million of them around the world. In fact, Wainhouse notes, they’re not a new phenomenon; there has always been “that little room” that people used to gather in. What’s changed though, is that the audiovisual technology necessary is now available to transform those little rooms into truly productive meeting spaces. Now they cater for the way users work today with laptops, tablets and smartphones. That technology has been developed in response to significant changes that are occurring in the workplace.

Collaboration

Millennials

First among these changes is the concept of “collaboration”. There is hardly a business or organisation today that isn’t moving towards a more collaborative style of working – as opposed to the centralised command/control structures that used to exist.

Any discussion of huddle rooms will likely turn to the subject of so-called “Millennials”. This generation – born between the early 1980s and the early 2000s – is now the fastest-growing demographic in the workplace. Because of their socio-economic significance, they’ve been widely studied – and their attitudes and preferences well documented. The huddle room style of working is one that engages (and thus helps to retain) Millennials, who enjoy teamwork and interaction.

Huddle anatomy It’s widely agreed that the key characteristics of a huddle room or space or zone (it doesn’t have to be walled off), is that it will accommodate up to around six people and that it is first and foremost an informal space for ad hoc meetings. The typical room is not, for example, bookable in advance. It’s designed to be a stark contrast to the more formal, larger board room type space in which presenting, rather than sharing, is often the norm. Transforming technology What is the technology that is transforming the huddle space? At its heart is the requirement to make the sharing of information between mobile devices as simple as possible. It will usually have a large, flat panel display – possibly equipped with interactive touch technology – and a device that enables meeting participants to, in effect, ‘project’ their device’s screen onto the central screen. In some cases, multiple mobile screens can be accommodated simultaneously. That’s a ‘basic’ huddle space. Increasingly, however, those spaces are equipped with facilities for audio conferencing or videoconferencing – with the latter allowing information sharing between locations.

Designing the future The key to a successful, productive huddle space is that it should be easy and intuitive to use, with minimal set-up time – and absolutely no requirement for an AV technician. (Millennials are notoriously tech-dependent – but not quite as tech-savvy). That ease of use, however, is not something that “just happens” by buying the right products. Ease of use has to be designed in from the start. The skill lies in identifying how a space will be used and integrating the relevant technologies in such a way that they operate together seamlessly. Huddle spaces don’t replace the more formal, traditional meeting rooms that have long been a staple of working life; rather, they complement them, because they’re designed to facilitate a parallel, but different way of working. As increasing numbers of organisations embrace a more collaborative approach, huddling can only become more popular.

The Solution Saville’s long experience was instrumental in the choice of appropriate, future-proofed technology to meet the diverse and demanding audio visual requirements presented by Thomas Cook. Signage Thirteen 43” Saville HD Pro2 displays greet visitors in the café and the IT support area, with

content delivered via OneLAN signage players. Facilities in the Contact Centre include over forty 43” LED signage screens. Auditorium Accommodating up to two hundred people, the Thomas Cook Auditorium is designed as a flexible, modular space to host meetings, receptions and events or provide hospitality space for staff or visiting guests. The main display is provided by twin four-screen videowalls using Samsung 55” HD screens. A Barco ClickShare system allows two users to connect wirelessly and display their content.

Meeting & Training Rooms In an extensive suite of meeting rooms with diverse presentation applications, it was important to provide a coordinated and consistent range of control systems. A key factor was the decision to equip the spaces with simple, comprehensive switching facilities utilising Extron Cable Cubby interfaces. Careful consideration was given to the choice of display solutions for different meeting rooms, especially the five Academy training rooms.

These important rooms provide inspirational key spaces for training and induction sessions and feature impressive 84� LED 4K direct backlight screens with twin 10W speakers and tilting smart wall mounts. Two of the large Academy Training Rooms are designed to be modular and flexible, with a partition wall that opens to create a large single space. Both areas feature 84� LED displays that can be combined when the room is opened. Boardroom & VC rooms In the Boardroom, the Crisis Management Centre and the Videoconferencing Suite, Extron CrossPoint matrix switchers were specified.

Tech Spotlight Extron Cable Cubby is a cable access and management enclosure providing AV connectivity and AC power, designed for use within tables and desks. To support the growing use of mobile devices, they include AC and USB modules for charging tablets and smartphones. The integral eight-button controller offers simple control for selecting presentation sources, adjusting audio levels and switching power on/off.

Meeting Rooms

These provide complete AV system integration and control, with 4K scaling, audio DSP and reliable digital video switching. Polycom RealPresence VC systems are installed in each area, with EagleEye auto focusing dual camera systems and sophisticated ClearOne ceiling microphone arrays. Twin 65” LED screens are fitted in the Directors office and 55” screens plus an interactive SMART Kapp display in the Crisis Management Centre. Other technology includes Extron colour touch screen control panels. Carefully designed furniture and cabling provision in the Crisis Management Centre creates a versatile, flexible space that can be used length-ways or sideways.

Huddle Areas On each floor, versatile Team Huddle areas provide informal space for impromptu meetings, briefings and learning, to empower staff to participate and engage in effective collaboration. In each, the focal point is an interactive SMART kapp iQ 65” ultra HD display, enabling participants to share notes using their phones, tablets and laptops. At the end of a session the notes may be emailed to attendees.

The University has set a new technology benchmark for the HE sector in the UK, investing £30m in a revolutionary new building. ‘The Spark’, is designed to provide innovative teaching, events and conferencing spaces.

The Outcome The contract to design and equip the entire building, including 35 classrooms, five lecture rooms, interactive study spaces and a professional conference and exhibition space, was awarded to Saville Audio Visual. The complex installation was completed in the summer of 2016.

The Solution With a demanding range of requirements, the contract called for innovation and creative thinking in each area of the installation, from the giant atrium videowall down to easy-to-use room system controllers. Atrium POD The key display facility inside The Pod is a 6x2 videowall installed in a bespoke curved mounting frame, comprising twelve 46� Samsung commercial grade screens, mounted in portrait mode. As in the other lecture theatres, the functionality of the AV system is built around an

Extron control and switching solution. This provides the ability to connect all the required sources including PCs, Bluray players, document cameras and mobile devices. Audio is controlled via an Extron system, allowing for a surround sound configuration for sources that support this natively. As in the lecture theatres and classrooms, the control system, visualiser and source equipment is housed in a bespoke Academy lectern.

Atrium Audio Atrium Video Wall The key focal feature is a giant 6x6 videowall consisting of 36 Samsung UD55D commercial display screens. Specialist SmartMount video wall mounts from Peerless-AV ensure precise eight-point alignment for every screen plus easy, pop-out access for servicing and maintenance. The videowall primarily displays multi-format content generated by Samsung MagicInfo software. For full screen displays, two HDMI input plates provide a direct connection to the videowall from an external video source.

The digital audio infrastructure system was designed to facilitate use of the Atrium as a flexible, multi-functional space. Easy set-up and configuration of different scenarios is possible via a digital patch panel included in the digital mixing console. Classrooms The 31 standard classrooms have each been equipped with a 70” CleverTouch display and a bespoke Academy AV lectern with USB visualiser, VGA/HDMI input plate and Saville OneTouch 6-button control panel for source selection and screen on/off.

In seven dual teaching rooms, 70” interactive displays are mounted on mobile adjustable trolleys, complete with a Barco ClickShare wireless collaboration system. A custom-built AV lectern in each room is nominated as the system master, with a slave trolley receiving audio and video from the master via a single CAT6 cable. Double rooms featuring a moveable partition benefit from the addition of a Quadra ‘sit or stand’ laptop table. Lecture Theatres Two distinctly different lecture theatres are located below ground level. In a departure from standard ‘raked’ seating, the Palmerston Theatre is a Harvard-styled environment arranged in a horseshoe design to promote group working.

Palmerston Lecture Theatre

The two lecture theatre systems feature the familiar control interface used in other teaching spaces, using an Extron control and switching solution. Projection in the Jane Austen theatre is via a 12,000 lumen Christie D12WU projector, complete with dual DVI picture-in-picture modules. This provides maximum flexibility for displaying multiple images. In addition, a touch screen monitor connected to the in-house PC enables presenters to annotate over the PC image. Due to the circular seating in the Palmerston theatre, projection is provided by an Epson EB-L1100u 6,000 lumen laser projector, complete with short throw UST lens. The projector is situated on a custom built Quadra cabinet below the screen.

In both theatres all control equipment, including a HoverCam Ultra8 visualiser and Extron touch control panel is housed in a bespoke Academy lectern, including a two-button ClickShare collaboration unit. Digital Signage A digital signage network throughout the Atrium area comprises twelve Samsung 40� screens with flat wall mounts. The screen content is delivered via Samsung MagicInfo Premium software.

In addition to the lecture theatre and rooms, the project required digital signage systems for every landing, along with Group Study Zones and a 2x2 format 55” NEC videowall in the cafeteria area.

Double Academy Lectern

The Outcome One of the main objectives was to create a change in teaching experience in the large lecture theatre with a focus on collaborative and group involvement and this has been achieved. The physical design limitations that this space placed on the technology have been met perfectly by the LED wall, demonstrated by sustained occupancy levels. Throughout the building, the environmental objectives have been addressed through the use of laser projection, low power interactive boards and smart sensor digital signage displays.

In the Charles Street lecture theatre, the university wished to create a more active learning environment rather than something only suitable for pure didactic delivery. Saville took up the challenge, proposing a bezel-less LED video wall and after three months in use, we are very pleased with the results. The Solution The main focus of the project was the large five metre wide, tiled LED videowall in the main lecture theatre - a ground-breaking indicator of future lecture theatre display trends. The 2.6mm fine pitch digiLED iMAG2600 was selected for its stable colour management, innovative mechanical design, low power consumption and seamless screen surface. The digiLED solution was also unique in offering servicing access from the front, a necessity in this situation.

The system is managed by Crestron DMPS-300c control housed in a bespoke teaching lectern, along with a visualiser and Crestron Capture HD-PRO lecture capture system utilising two remote pan/tilt cameras. Classrooms In the classroom teaching spaces, triple zoned group working capability is provided by dual Panasonic laser hybrid projectors combined with a SMART 885i interactive board. System control is via Crestron located in a bespoke lectern complete with inbuilt PC and monitor plus stereo sound and IR hearing loop.

Digital signage screens are installed on each landing in custom built Quadra Media frames. Visitors to ‘the Deli’ can keep up to date with the latest information and news via four 55” narrow bezel NEC screens in a 2x2 videowall format. Viewers experience 4K UHD content with crystal clear images controlled via an automatic sensor that tailors the brightness to suit the ambient light levels. High quality audio is supplied using a Renkus Heinz steerable array speaker system. Streaming The Laboratory benefits from a Wolfvision VZ C6 ceiling-mounted visualiser providing HD recording and streaming.

AV technology injection for Institute of Translational Medicine The Client

The Brief

Recently opened at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, the new Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM) is a world-class clinical research facility taking teaching and communications to a new level.

Internal and external communication is key to the success of the new Institute of Translational Medicine in Birmingham. To take the Institute forward with the very latest technology, Saville was commissioned to design and install videoconferencing presentation systems, IPTV and collaborative multimedia facilities.

Developed by Birmingham University and three local NHS Trusts, the centre is helping progress the very latest scientific research findings from the University into enhanced treatments for patients across a range of major health issues, including cancer and liver disease.

The expectations of today’s academics, practitioners and students include the need for the highest quality in AV facilities, high definition videoconferencing and easy BYOD provision.

To meet these expectations, the solutions proposed and delivered by Saville comprise customised systems for each of the building’s various teaching and meeting spaces.

The Outcome The IPTV system specified by the Institute as a valuable extra teaching tool provides an effective overflow capability, enabling lectures and presentations in the lecture theatre to be relayed to the boardroom, reception area, meeting rooms and conference rooms.

The new technology backs the Institute’s aim to build on Birmingham’s excellent track record in clinical trials, by increasing capacity and enabling more patients to be co-located alongside clinicians and researchers. It also makes it easier for both SME and large pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms to work more closely with clinicians and academics, bringing additional investment into the city.

Boardroom

The Solution Reception Area & Café Visitors and staff are greeted by information displays provided by two 32” and two 55” NEC LED screens with integral Microsoft Windows embedded PCs. The Café area features a stand-alone 55” LED display with Exterity IPTV reception. Boardroom New facilities include a Crestron all-in-one controller, switcher/scaler and processor with 65” Saville HDPro screen and digital media receiver. As in the smaller rooms, Exterity IPTV provision and wireless AirMedia collaboration is installed.

HD videoconferencing is provided by a Polycom RealPresence system including an EagleEye automatic four-camera system and ceiling mounted mic array. Lecture Theatre This purpose-designed teaching facility is equipped with HD videoconferencing, streaming and lecture capture. Two Christie 8,900 lumen projectors with twin fixed-frame 2.5m-wide screens provide the main display. In normal teaching mode, both projectors will show the same image. During videoconferencing, both screens can show different content from the VC codec. An optional videoconferencing mode enables the lecturer to see the far end image, where a

lecture is being relayed via VC to another location using the camera at the rear of the room. The room features a bespoke Academy double width lectern with twin equipment racks, housing Crestron scaler/matrix switcher, AirMedia wireless collaboration system, HD visualiser and Polycom videoconferencing system. This room is also equipped with a Polycom EagleEye camera unit, with automatic pan, tilt, zoom and focus capabilities. Other features include state-of-the-art Polycom ceiling microphone arrays, 4-channel power amplifier and sophisticated streaming and lecture capture facilities, with presenter tracking camera software and touch screen control.

Lecture Theatre

Meeting Rooms A total of seven individual meeting rooms have been equipped with integrated AV systems, comprising 55” LED display screens, Crestron AirMedia wireless collaboration facilities and Exterity IPTV capabilities. The systems are typically operated via a Saville OneTouch control panel offering simple pushbutton control with rotary volume control. These facilities are also installed in the Rare Disease Resource Room.

These rooms are each operated via a Saville 8-button control panel, allowing easy selection and switching of inputs – including VC and simple volume control. Mobile Equipment Saville also supplied an important additional resource in the form of four mobile trolleymounted systems. Mounted on Unicol Avecta trolleys, the self-contained units include 55” Saville HDPro displays, Polycom RealPresence videoconferencing systems and auto-tracking EagleEye camera assemblies.

Conference Rooms Enhanced systems have been supplied in four conference rooms, similar to those in the meeting rooms, but with 65” LED screens, IPTV and Polycom RealPresence videoconferencing facilities.

The Outcome

Established in 1961 as a pioneering manufacturer of portable, modular buildings, Portakabin operates in seven countries and employs more than 1,700 people. In 2016, Portakabin was named UK Private Business of The Year.

The system provides a versatile, easy to use facilities package for an economical investment. It provides a future-proofed resource for professional presentations, allowing the company to derive tangible benefit from the space.

The Brief

The Solution

At its UK head office site, the company decided to convert a large, but previously little-used space into a versatile meeting area with sophisticated presentation facilities. The installation was to include a raised stage area, a mobile, folding table system and high powered digital projection with a large, fixed frame screen.

An AMX Modero touch screen panel plus an AppleÂŽ iPad running the TPControl app provides real-time, touch control of the AV system, lighting, blinds and room temperature. At the heart of the control system is a new conference switcher, ensuring full WXGA output regardless of the PC input rsolution, so all inputs

are displayed in 720P HD. A ceiling-mounted Christie LWU70 HD projector was chosen for its flexible connectivity, high resolution and brightness, whilst presenters can share content from their own PC or device on the main screen using a Barco Clickshare system. An audio system comprising four 250W cabinet speakers with independent volume controls provides the optimum sound balance for different audience sizes. A range of Quadra Academy folding tables was also supplied, together with Academy stacking chairs and a bespoke presenter’s lectern to house the source equipment.
